How to get along well with your parents
As you are growing up, you may want to be free from your parents and feel ready to make your own decisions. However, your parents will disagree with you. Your relationship with your parents may be in trouble right now. Here are some tips for you to avoid quarrels with your parents.
First of all, discuss the rules ahead of time and not at the last minute. In this way, you’ll be able to tell what they will say yes or no to before you make plans.
Secondly, try to remain calm when your parents say no to something. You’d better listen to what they have to say instead of quarreling with them.
Last but not least, spend time with your family. Communicate with each other at home. Suggest activities that your whole family will enjoy together such as going for a hike, a bike ride, or going to the beach.
Follow these tips, and you will enjoy a good relationship with your parents.

When I was 14, my parents made me volunteer at Greenfield Animal Shelter as punishment for skipping math class. “You need to learn responsibility, ” Mom said, handing me a brightly colored uniform that was too big. The shelter smelled like wet fur and disinfectant (消毒剂) ; and my job was cleaning cages — washing food from bowls and sticky floors.
On my third Saturday, I noticed a golden retriever named Max. His cage card said his owner had passed away, and he’d been at the shelter for three months. Unlike other dogs, Max covered in the corner, shaking at every noise. When I entered his kennel, he flattened himself into a trembling pancake.
“He’s sweet but scared of everything,” Ms. Torres, a shelter worker, told me. She showed me old injuries on his legs from when he’d tried to bite through the bars.
I decided to spend my breaks with Max. At first, I just sat near his food bowl, reading aloud from a book. His breathing slowed to whispers. Soon, he let me touch his ears. When I dropped my keys, he stepped back but stayed.
“You’re making progress,” Ms. Torres said one day. “But don’t get too attached. Dogs like him rarely get adopted.”
I didn’t listen. I brought him a tennis ball, and we played fetch in the outdoor pen. His tail wagged a little more each time. One rainy day, he licked (舔) my hand, and I, with tears in my eyes, felt a lump in my throat.
Then, one morning, a family stopped at Max’s kennel. The youngest girl called him a “golden cloud.” Max didn’t hide. He walked forward, tail wagging, and licked her fingers.
As they filled out the adoption papers, I hid in the storage closet, hugging my knees. I heard their laughter, the jingle of Max’s new collar, and the sound of the door shutting. When I came out, Ms. Torres smiled. “You did good, kid,” she said.
Max taught me that courage isn’t about being fearless – it’s about taking small steps toward something bigger. Now, whenever I’m scared to try something new, I remember his wagging tail and the day he trusted the world again.

Boomerang (回旋镖) children who return to live with their parents after university can be good for families, leading to closer, more supportive relationships and increased contact between the generations, a study has found.
The findings contradict research published earlier this year showing that returning adult children trigger a significant decline in their parents’ quality of life and well-being.
The young adults taking part in the study were “more positive than might have been expected” about moving back home — the shame is reduced as so many of their peers are in the same position, and they acknowledged the benefits of parents’ financial and emotional support. Daughters were happier than sons, often slipping back easily into teenage patterns of behaviour, the study found.
Parents on the whole were more uncertain, expressing concern about the likely duration of the arrangement and how to manage it. But they acknowledged that things were different for graduates today, who leave university with huge debts and fewer job opportunities.
The families featured in the study were middle-class and tended to view the achievement of adult independence for their children as a “family project”. Parents accepted that their children required supports as university students and then as graduates returning home, as they tried to find jobs paying enough to enable them to move out and get on the housing ladder.
“However,” the study says, “day-to-day tensions about the prospects of achieving different dimensions of independence, which in a few extreme cases came close to conflict, characterised the experience of a majority of parents and a little over half the graduates.”
Areas of disagreement included chores, money and social life. While parents were keen to help, they also wanted different relationships from those they had with their own parents, and continuing to support their adult children allowed them to remain close.
46.What is the finding of the previous research?
A.The parents’ quality of life became worse than before.
B.Boomerang children made their parents even happier than before.
C.Boomerang children never did any housework.
D.The parents were looking forward to their children’s return.
47.The underlined word “trigger” in Paragraph 2 may be best replaced by ______.
A.benefit B.defeat C.cause D.allow
48.What is the attitude of the college graduates towards returning home?
A.They are ashamed of turning to their parents for help.
B.They are proud to be independent from the family.
C.They are doubtful about whether they should return.
D.They are glad that they could come back.
49.What can be inferred as the reason for the “boomerang children” phenomenon?
A.It is harder for the children to secure a satisfying job.
B.The parents are willing to provide support to their children.
C.The children want to keep in closer touch with their parents.
D.There is more house work needed to be done by the children.
50.What is the side effect of the “boomerang children” phenomenon?
A.Both parents and children enjoy a more harmonious relationship.
B.Neither parents nor children want to do the chores at home.
C.There are occasional quarrels between parents and children.
D.Not only parents but also children want to be independent eagerly.
D
Here is a story: A man sees a butterfly (蝴蝶). The butterfly tries to get out of its chrysalis (蛹). Feeling sorry for it, the man decides to help. He cuts the chrysalis and the butterfly comes out easily. Surprisingly enough, the butterfly is unable to fly. If the butterfly doesn’t struggle (挣扎,奋斗) to leave the chrysalis, it can’t fly! The struggle develops the energy in the butterfly which makes it fly. Similarly, the challenges (挑战) of life bring out the best in young people and make them fly.
When people are young, meeting and overcoming (克服) challenges will make them strong and ready to face life. When we look at successful people, we see that the most successful of them are people who have had to struggle. One famous businessman, who now owns many supermarkets, used to carry clothes on his back and sell them from door to door when he was young. Another successful man is Dennis. His father died when he was only twenty. His father’s death forced him to mature fast. He had to bring up a family of nine people. He took up the challenges and overcame them. Today his brothers and sisters are leading successful lives.
Sometimes challenges do not appear to us because we keep away from them. So some parents and teachers actively encourage young people to face challenges. They might organize some activities for young people which provide them with challenges, like rock-climbing, camping, volunteer work and so on. However, just passing exams will not prepare a person for life. We must meet and overcome challenges. The young people of today will become the leaders of tomorrow. For countries to continue to become successful, it is important that the young people learn to meet challenges and overcome them.
51.From the story we know that the butterfly can’t fly because ________.
A.the man feels sorry for it B.the man helps it come out
C.it gets out by itself D.it tries to challenge itself
52.Dennis’s example shows that successful people should ________.
A.take up business early B.sell clothes from door to door
C.overcome the difficulties D.become the leaders of tomorrow
53.The meaning of the underlined word “mature” in the passage is “________”.
A.take up B.get up C.wake up D.grow up
54.What is the writer trying to do in the passage?
A.Encourage young people to face challenges.
B.Suggest how to become a successful businessman.
C.Explain what will happen if a person fails the exam.
D.Describe where a butterfly comes from.
55.What is the best title for this passage?
A.Successful People Have a Sense of Achievement
B.Young People Must Develop Their Energy Actively
C.Countries Should Continue to Become Successful
D.Challenges of Life Bring Out the Best in Young People

When I was a boy, our big family sometimes gathered together at my aunt’s small house in summer. Relatives (亲戚) from all over the country would come to visit. The adults used to crowd together to talk and catch up on each other’s life. All of us would be sent out into the front yard to play while dinner would slowly cook for all of us. Those were the days before video games and smart phones, so we often ended up playing a good old-fashioned game of tag
I remember one of those times especially.
I was the smallest of all the kids there, so I got caught first but couldn’t catch anyone else. Though I ran after my brothers and cousins hard they were all too fast for me. I grew more and more upset. I finally lunged at (猛冲) one of my brothers and fell face first into the dirt. I got up with tears in my eyes. Then I saw one of my female cousins standing there. She started to run but was going much slower than before. I easily caught up and tagged her. Then she turned to me, smiled and said, “I’m it! You’d better run!” I ran off laughing with great glee while she turned and started to chase one of my elder brothers.
I see now how her act of kindness that day saved me from sadness and returned me to joy. It didn’t matter that we hardly ever saw each other. We were family and she loved me. We are all one, we all belong to each other, and we are one big, beautiful family. Perhaps it is time that we should share our love, our kindness, our laughter, and our joy with everyone without fear. Perhaps it is time to finally and forever bring this world together in one big family party.

B.He grew braver and showed love.

44.How did the author feel towards Max?

根据文章第一段第一句“When I was 14, my parents made me volunteer at Greenfield Animal Shelter as punishment for skipping math class.(当我14岁时,父母让我去格林菲尔德动物收容所做志愿者,作为我逃数学课的惩罚)”可知,作者父母让她做志愿者是为了纠正她的错误行为。故选A项。
根据第二段中的描述“Max… in the corner, shaking at every noise. When I entered his kennel, he flattened himself into a trembling pancake.(Max在角落里……,对每个声音都发抖。当我走进狗舍时,他把自己压成一张发抖的薄饼)”可知,Max因极度恐惧而蜷缩在角落。因此,“covered”在此处意为“因害怕而躲藏”。故选B项。
43.细节理解题。根据第七段中描述“Then, one morning, a family stopped at Max’s kennel. The youngest girl called him a “golden cloud.” Max didn’t hide. He walked forward, tail wagging, and licked her fingers(小女孩叫他‘金色的云’。Max没有躲藏,他走上前去,摇着尾巴,舔了舔她的手指)”可知,Max面对小女孩时表现得勇敢且充满爱意。故选B项。
44.推理判断题。根据第四段“I decided to spend my breaks with Max. At first, I just sat near his food bowl, reading aloud from a book.(我决定把休息时间都用来陪Max。起初,我就坐在他的食盆旁,大声读书)”以及倒数第四段“One rainy day, he licked my hand, and I, with tears in my eyes, felt a lump in my throat.(一个下雨天,他舔了我的手,我眼含泪水,喉咙哽咽)”可知,作者决定把休息时间都用来陪Max,在雨天的时候,Max舔作者的手,作者眼含泪水,喉咙哽咽,可推知,作者对Max充满关爱与关切。故选C项。
根据第一段“When I was 14, my parents made me volunteer at Greenfield Animal Shelter as punishment for skipping math class. “You need to learn responsibility,” Mom said, handing me a a brightly colored uniform that was too big. The shelter smelled like wet fur and disinfectant (消毒剂) ; and my job was cleaning cages — washing food from bowls and sticky floors(在我14岁那年,因为我逃掉了数学课,父母罚我去格林菲尔德动物收容所做志愿者。妈妈一边说着“你得学会承担责任”,一边递给我一套颜色鲜艳却过大的工作服。收容所里弥漫着湿漉漉的皮毛和消毒剂的气味;而我的工作就是打扫笼子——清洗食盆里的残留食物和黏糊糊的地板)”以及最后一段“Max taught me that courage isn’t about being fearless – it’s about taking small steps toward something bigger. Now, whenever I’m scared to try something new, I remember his wagging tail and the day he trusted the world again(麦克斯教会我,勇气并非无所畏惧——而是朝着更宏大的目标迈出微小的步伐。
C

根据第二段“The findings contradict research published earlier this year showing that returning adult children trigger a significant decline in their parents’ quality of life and well-being.(这一发现与今年早些时候发表的一项研究结果不一致,早些的研究显示,返乡的成年子女会导致父母的生活质量和幸福感显著恶化)”可知,以往的研究显示,返乡的成年子女会导致父母的生活质量和幸福感比之前更差。故选A。
根据划线词所在的句子“The findings disagree with the research published earlier this year showing that returning adult children trigger a significant worsening in their parents’ quality of life and wellbeing.(这一发现与今年早些时候发表的一项研究不一致,该研究显示,成年子女回国会trigger父母的生活质量和幸福感显著恶化)”可知,通过新旧研究对比,以往的研究表明,返乡的成年子女会导致父母的生活质量和幸福感显著下降。
根据第三段“The young adults taking part in the study were “more positive than might have been expected” about moving back home — the shame is reduced as so many of their peers are in the same position, and they acknowledged the benefits of parents’ financial and emotional support.(参与这项研究的年轻人对于搬回家“比预期的更积极”——他们的羞愧感减少了,因为他们的许多朋友都处于同样的处境,而且他们承认父母在经济和情感上的支持是有好处的)”可知,大学毕业生对回家的态度是积极的,很高兴能够回家,故选D。
根据第四段“But they acknowledged that things were different for graduates today, who leave university with huge debts and fewer job opportunities.(但他们承认,如今的毕业生情况有所不同,他们毕业时背负着巨额债务,工作机会也更少)”可推知,孩子们很难找到一份满意的工作是“回巢族”现象的原因。故选A。
根据倒数第二段““However,” the study says, “day-to-day tensions about the prospects of achieving different dimensions of independence, which in a few extreme cases came close to conflict, characterised the experience of a majority of parents and a little over half the graduates.”(“然而,”该研究称,“实现不同层面独立前景的日常紧张关系,在一些极端情况下接近冲突,是大多数父母和略高于一半的毕业生的经历。”)” 及第最后一段“Areas of disagreement included chores, money and social life.(分歧领域包括家务、金钱和社交生活)”可知,在少数极端情况下,这种紧张情绪接近冲突。

D.Challenges of Life Bring Out the Best in Young People
【答案】51.B 52.C 53.D 54.A 55.D

根据第二段中“Another successful man is Dennis. His father died when he was only twenty. His father’s death forced him to mature fast. He had to bring up a family of nine people. He took up the challenges and overcame them. Today his brothers and sisters are leading successful lives.(另一个成功的人是丹尼斯。他父亲在他二十岁的时候就去世了。父亲的死迫使他迅速成熟起来。他不得不养活一个九口之家。他接受挑战并克服了它们。今天,他的兄弟姐妹们都过着成功的生活)”可知,Dennis接受了挑战并克服了它们,由此可推测,Dennis的例子说明成功人士应该要克服困难。故选C。
53.词句猜测题。根据第二段中“His father died when he was only twenty. His father’s death forced him to mature fast. He had to bring up a family of nine people.(他父亲在他二十岁的时候就去世了。父亲的死迫使他迅速mature起来。他不得不养活一个九口之家)”可知,父亲去世后,他需要承担起养家的责任,所以这里mature意思是“成长,成熟”,与“grow up”意思相近。故选D。
54.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“So some parents and teachers actively encourage young people to face challenges.(所以一些家长和老师积极鼓励年轻人面对挑战)”以及全文内容可知,作者写这篇文章是为了鼓励年轻人面对挑战。故选A。
因此,最佳标题是“Challenges of Life Bring Out the Best in Young People(生活中的挑战激发年轻人的潜能)”。

76.What did the adults of the author’s family do when they gathered together? (no more than 15 words)
77.Why couldn’t the author play the game of tag well? (no more than 15 words)
78.What does the underlined word “glee” in the third paragraph mean? (1 word)
79.How did the author feel during the whole period of time of the game that day? (no more than 10 words)
80.How do you show and share your love in your life? (no more than 20 words)
76.They talked, caught up on each other’s lives and made the dinner.或They used to/would talk and catch up on each other’s lives. 77.Because he was the smallest, and the others all ran faster than him.或Because he was the smallest, and the others were all too fast for him. 78.Happiness/Delight/Joy. 79.He was sad/unhappy/blue/frustrated/annoyed, but then he was glad/happy/pleased/delighted. 80.I try to help people in trouble and share my joy with others to make them happy.
根据第一段中“The adults used to crowd together to talk and catch up on each other’s life. All of us would be sent out into the front yard to play while dinner would slowly cook for all of us.(大人们常常聚在一起聊天,了解彼此的生活。我们所有人都会被送到前院去玩,而晚餐则会慢慢地为我们所有人准备)”可知,当作者的家人聚在一起时,他们会聊天,了解彼此的生活,并且准备晚餐。由于题目要求不超过15个单词,可以简化为“They talked, caught up on each other’s lives and made the dinner.”或者“They used to/would talk and catch up on each other’s lives.”。 They talked, caught up on each other’s lives and made the dinner.或 They used to/would talk and catch up on each other’s lives.
根据第三段中“I was the smallest of all the kids there, so I got caught first but couldn’t catch anyone else. Though I ran after my brothers and cousins hard they were all too fast for me.(我是那里所有孩子中最小的,所以我第一个被抓到,但却抓不到其他人。虽然我拼命追赶我的兄弟和表兄弟,但他们都跑得比我快)”可知,作者玩捉人游戏玩得不好,是因为他是所有孩子中最小的,而且其他人都跑得比他快。由于题目要求不超过15个单词,可以简化为“Because he was the smallest, and the others all ran faster than him.”或者“Because he was the smallest, and the others were all too fast for him.”。 Because he was the smallest, and the others all ran faster than him.或 Because he was the smallest, and the others were all too fast for him.
根据划线词所在句“I ran off laughing with great glee while she turned and started to chase one of my elder brothers.(我 笑着跑开,而她转过身开始追赶我的一个哥哥)”中“laughing”可知,作者大笑着跑开,说明他很开心。 Happiness/Delight/Joy.
根据第三段中“I grew more and more upset.(我越来越沮丧)”和“I ran off laughing with great glee(我大笑着跑开)”可知,作者在游戏初期因为抓不到人而感到沮丧,但在表姐的善意举动后,他变得非常开心。 由于题目要求不超过10个单词,可以简化为“He was sad/unhappy/blue/frustrated/annoyed, but then he was glad/happy/pleased/delighted.”。 He was sad/unhappy/blue/frustrated/annoyed, but then he was glad/happy/pleased/delighted.
I try to help people in trouble and share my joy with others to make them happy.
