A. are like B. is like C. like D. likes

Anyone who has ever been helped by a social worker has Jane Addams to thank. Addams helped the poor and worked for peace. When Sandra Day O’Connor finished third in her class at Stanford Law School, in 1952, she could not find work at a law firm because she was a woman. One morning I noticed a woman sitting alone at the bus stop. She seemed not to go to work hurriedly. She wasn’t going anywhere as well. Was she waiting for the bus? Did mall (商场) buses come this early when the stores wouldn’t be open for hours? As I drove by, I heard a voice say, “Give her a bottle of water.”
“She looks like she is sleeping. Why would I wake her? What is wrong with me? What is so hard about doing the right thing? It’s just a bottle of water!”
So I drove by her again and again. Finally, I pulled my car into a parking zone, stepping out with a bottle of water in one hand and a twenty-dollar bill in the other. Each step seemed to fill me with purpose and focus. No words can describe what happened between us at that moment. I thought I was bringing her a cold drink, but instead I was bringing her a hope she needed. We sat together for a while as she talked. She had a sad story to tell, but she was no longer sad. Before we parted, I grabbed all the cash I had in my purse and found more water in my car along with some snacks. We stood at the bus stop hugging and said our goodbyes.
I still have a thousand questions as to why I struggled to act. Why did it take me many circles around the mall and an argument with myself? I once wavered between helping her and ignoring her. All I know for sure is that while walking toward that woman at the bus stop, a miracle happened.
There are opportunities for us to love every day. Maybe our doubts keep us from acting. Maybe we don’t want to take the risk or be uncomfortable. That day, I learned how love answers when asked and how love both gives and receives.

What if we had the power to control time, instead of moving from the past to the present to the future? What if we could jump, loop and travel through time in a machine? What if we could go wherever and whenever we pleased?
This ability would allow us to witness historic wonders, change decisions and see people from the past. We could right wrongs and stop wars from starting.
The mysterious puzzle of time has kept people debating its nature for hundreds of years. Science fiction writers have turned it into imaginative stories. Some scientists have even attempted to explain it using math. This math tries to make the dream of time travel come true.
The scientist Albert Einstein said that time and space are one thing. He called it “spacetime.” Einstein said that there are three dimensions in space: height, width and depth. A scientist named Hermann Minkowski added time as a fourth dimension.
Einstein introduced two ideas that have led to theories about the possibility of time travel. The first is relativity. The idea of relativity is that the force of gravity causes space to bend, which causes time to twist. The second idea focuses on special relativity. The idea is that a traveler moving super-fast through flat spacetime will enter the future. Einstein considered time “relative” because it is measured based on where we are on Earth or in space.
Stephen Hawking is a famous scientist. He believes that a time machine will never be built. If it were possible, he thinks we would already know. If a time machine could be built, how come no one from the future has invaded us?
The first science fiction story with this theme is The Clock That Went Backward by Edward P. Mitchell, which was published in 1881. Since then, thousands of books, films and television shows have explored the idea of time travel, in which some tools such as phones, watches, photographs and old books take travelers backward and forward.
Will time travel ever happen? Who knows? Most important is to keep your eyes open and have a sense of wonder.
18. What is the author’s purpose of writing the first paragraph?
A. To show time and space are connected.
B. To show people’s interest in time travel.
C. To draw readers’ attention to time travel.
D. To make people believe time travel is possible.
19. Which of the following statement could Einstein agree with?
A. Time travel is possible in the future.
B. People can’t move faster than light.
C. Time travel is against scientific rules.
D. Spacetime is not a real thing in theory.
20. What is the last but one paragraph mainly about?
A. The first science fiction story.
B. Some tools used in time travel.
C. Edward P. Mitchell, the pioneer.
D. Different works about time travel.
21. What is the writer’s attitude toward time travel?
A. cautious. B. pessimistic
C. sceptical D. optimistic.
C 19. A 20. D 21. D

Time flies, but the tracks of time remain in books and museums. This is what made a recent tragedy in Brazil even more terrible.
On Sept.2, a big fire ripped through the National Museum of Brazil. “ Two hundred years of work, research and knowledge were lost, ” Brazilian President Michel Temer wrote on Twitter after the fire. “It's a sad day for all Brazilians.”
Most of the 20 million pieces of history are believed to have been destroyed. Only as little as 10 percent of the collection may have survived Time reported. Among all the items, there were Egyptian mummies, the bones of uniquely Brazilian creatures such as the long-necked dinosaur Maxakalisaurus, and an 11,500-year-old skull called Luzia, which was considered one of South America's oldest human fossils.
Besides these, Brazil's indigenous(本土的,土著的) knowledge also suffered. The museum housed world-famous collections of indigenous objects, as well as many audio recordings of local languages from all over Brazil. Some of these recordings, now lost, were of languages that are no longer spoken.
“The tragedy this Sunday is a sort of national suicide, a crime against our past and future generations,” Bernard Mello Franco, one of Brazil's best-known columnists, wrote on the O Globo newspaper site.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, as BBC News reported on Sept. 3. After the fire burned out, crowds protested outside the museum to show their anger at the loss of the irreplaceable items of historical value.
According to Emilio Bruna, an ecologist at the University of Florida, museums are living, breathing stores of who we are and where we've come from, and the world around us.
Just as underwater grass floats on the surface if it loses its roots, a nation is lost without its memories. The fire at the National Museum of Brazil teaches the world an important lesson: We should never neglect history.
22. What can be summarized as the main idea of the 3rd and 4th paragraphs?
A. Long history of South America. B. Remains from the fire.
C. Mysteries to be solved. D. History and knowledge burned up.
23. What opinion may be shared by Bernard Mello Franco and the protesters?
A. The government is to blame for the tragedy.
B. The museum should be rebuilt
C. The loss can't be made up for.
D. The criminal should be sentenced to death.
24. What does Emilio Bruna compare museums to?
A. Living stores of our past. B. Underwater grass.
C. The oldest fossils. D. National suicide.
25. What may be the best title of the passage?
A. Death of a civilization B. Functions of museums
C. Gone with the fire D. Brazilians' memories
D 23. C 24. A 25. C

Most of the 20 million pieces of history are believed to have been destroyed. Only as little as 10 percent of the collection may have survived, Time reported.
….Besides these, Brazil's indigenous knowledge also suffered.”
根据第六段最后一句“After the fire burned out, crowds protested outside the museum to show their anger at the loss of the irreplaceable items of historical value” 当大火烧完以后,愤怒的人群聚集在博物馆的外面举行抗议,这是因为人们认为在大火中失去的这些文物和历史知识是无法取代的。
根据文章最后两段“According to Emilio Bruna, an ecologist at the University of Florida, museums are living, breathing stores of who we are and where we've come from, and the world around us. Just as underwater grass floats on the surface if it loses its roots, a nation is lost without its memories”可知Emilio Bruna认为博物馆让人们了解人们来自何处,让人们了解周围的世界,如果没有了人们对过去的回忆,国家也就是失去了根。

由第一句话“The favorite food in the United States is the hamburger, a kind of round sandwich of cooked beef.(在美国最受欢迎的食物是汉堡包,一种煮熟的牛肉做成的圆形三明治。)”可知,选项承接上文说明买汉堡的地点,E项“The favorite place to buy a hamburger is a fast food restaurant.(买汉堡包最喜欢的地方是快餐店。)”
由空格后的句子“Most of them sell hamburgers, French fries and milkshakes, which are traditionally popular foods among Americans.(他们大多出售汉堡包、炸薯条和奶昔,这些都是美国人传统上喜爱的食物。)” 故G项“There are many kinds of fast food restaurants in the United States (美国有很多种快餐店)”可以作为主题句放在该段的段首。故选G项。
空格前的句子“Fast food restaurants are popular.” 而C选项“In fact, they reflect American life style. (事实上,它们反映了美国的生活方式)”正好符合题意。故选C项。
【29题详解】
由空格后的句子“People who are busy do not want to spend time preparing their own food or waiting while someone else prepares it.(忙碌的人不想花时间准备自己的食物或等待其他人准备食物)”可知,这里讲的是快餐受欢迎的其中一个原因。 故A选项“Second, they are fast.(其次,他们很快)”符合题意。故选A项。
由“Finally, most food in a fast food restaurant is not expensive.(最后,快餐店许多食物都不贵)”可知,选项承接上文,说明上文导致的结果。

A. cautious. B. pessimistic

Only as little as 10 percent of the collection may have survived, Time reported.
