Qingming Festival is a Chinese holiday that has been celebrated in China for centuries. It is not only one of China’s 24 solar terms (节气) but also a holiday for people to honor lost family members. The name Qingming comes from the saying “Plants start to come to life in a clear and bright way in early April”.
Chinese people visit the tombs (坟墓) of their ancestors to show their respect on that day. Families sweep the tombs and clean away the grass around them. Then they put flowers, food and drinks in front of the tombs and burn Zhiqian (known as ghost money in English). Finally, they bow before the tombs, hoping the ancestors can bless and bring good luck to them.
Another traditional custom is spring outing. Chinese people prefer to take a walk in the countryside in such good weather. It’s also a good choice for those who lead busy modern lives to enjoy the beauty of nature.
To celebrate the festival, people eat Qingtuan, a green rice ball made of sticky rice and green vegetable (Aicao) juice with filling like sweet bean paste. People from Shanxi make “Huamo” with different shapes.
A well-known poem by Tang Dynasty poet Du Mu describes the tomb sweeping scene “A drizzling rain falls like teas on the mourning day. The mourners’ (哀悼者) heart is breaking on his way”. However, Qingming is not all about sadness. Another poem by the Song poet Wu Weixin reads “The pear blossoms (梨花) are dancing in the wind, and here comes the Qingming Day. Almost half of the young people were out of town to enjoy spring.” So you can be cheerful if you can feel the joy the festival can bring.

After the cold winter, spring comes and animals are awake. But because of the winter, the weather is dry and farming needs water. The story goes that after this day, the Dragon King who controls clouds and rain would wake from his winter sleep and bring rain for the crops (庄稼).
On that day, there are lots of traditional celebration activities. First, in the early morning when it’s still dark, families go to a river or a well with lanterns to get water and then carry it back home. Then they light candles, burn incense (香) sticks and offer sacrifices (祭品). This ritual is named “Yintianlong” (lead the field dragon). People believe the actions can bring wealth and health to their homes.
The most well-known tradition on the day is having a haircut. It’s a sign of good luck and energy (力量) during the whole year. However, it’s said that it will bring bad luck if you get a haircut during the first lunar month.
