They were a mixed bunch. Some came from the rich side of the town, but the majorities(大部分)were from parents who struggled to get jobs. So she had not been eager to carry out this activity. “Think about all the things that your dad does that makes him special,” she said loudly as she came up to the last table. “You can write a poem or short story that makes your dad special. The written part of this activity should be completed before you start to decorate your card.” Andrew looked at the blank page. He had never met, spoken to, or been hugged by his dad, so how could he write about him? Once when he was looking in his grandma’s photo box, he had seen an old black and white photo but it was badly creased (弄皱) and difficult to recognize any clear features(特点). Grandma had quickly taken it from him and buried it deeply among the rest, never to be found again. After thinking for a while, he wrote: Dear Dad, You are a person I do not know and would probably not recognize as I only saw an old photo of you a long time ago. I think and wonder about you often, especially when I have no one to talk to. Passage 2 (24-25九年级上·北京交大附中·期中) Sally didn’t know what was wrong with her grandma. She was always forgetting things, like where she put the sugar and what time to have dinner. “She might have Alzheimer’s disease(阿尔茨海默症),” her mother said. “We might have to put her in a nursing home(养老院) so that she can get proper care.” “Oh, that’s terrible! She’ll miss her own house!” Sally said. “Maybe, but we can see her at weekends,” her mother answered. “We can bring her presents.” “Like ice cream? Grandma loves strawberry ice cream!” Sally said. The first time they visited Grandma, Sally wanted to cry. Grandma sat all by herself in the corner of the room. Sally hugged Grandma. “Look,” she said, “We brought you strawberry ice cream!” Grandma took it and began to eat without saying a word. “She doesn’t seem to know us.” Sally was upset. “You have to give her time,” her mother said. But the next time it was the same. Grandma ate the ice cream, but didn’t say anything. “Grandma, do you know who I am?” Sally asked. “You’re the girl who brings me the ice cream,” Grandma said. “Yes, but I’m Sally, your granddaughter. Don’t you remember me?” “Sure. You’re the girl who brings me ice cream.” All of a sudden, Sally realized that Grandma would never remember her. “Oh, how I love you, Grandma!” she said. Just then she saw a tear roll down Grandma’s cheek(脸颊). “Love,” she said. “I remember love.” “You see, dear, that’s all she wants,” her mother said. “Love.” “I’ll bring her ice cream every weekend then, and hug her even if she doesn’t remember me.” Sally said. I mostly went to school with other kids whose parents were also in the military. But when my dad retired (退伍), I moved to a common school with twelve-year-olds who shared no similar life experience with me. I was like a stranger in a strange land, lonely and uneasy. For the first few weeks, I had nothing to do but write in my diary every day — stories of adventure, of old friends, of feelings that I could not speak. One day, my teacher, Mrs. Bush, came to me and asked why I always sat there writing instead of playing with others. I told her I enjoyed writing more than playing. She just smiled and left. About 2 weeks later, she gave us a writing task. I was excited that I could now take part in something that I was good at. That night I worked on my story for hours. It was my chance to feel important and let the class accept me. A few days after we handed in our works, Mrs. Bush called me up to the front of the classroom. I stood before thirty pairs of eyes looking at me, and I got worried. Then Mrs. Bush told the class that everyone had done a great job. “But”, she said, “one student stood out as an excellent writer, with imagination and creativity.” That student was ME! The class clapped and Mrs. Bush handed me my paper, with the words on it, “Malinda, you are an excellent writer. Please keep on writing and share your gift of writing with the world. I am proud of you and glad you are in my class.” Mrs. Bush helped me feel a sense of belonging and find a way to face a change in life. She helped me build confidence in myself that stayed with me beyond sixth grade. 7.How does the writer feel after she moved to a common school? A.Happy. B.Curious. C.Proud. She was holding a flyer (传单). Mrs. Simon read the flyer aloud. Everyone agreed they would like to enter the art competition. Mrs. Simon said, “Our classroom supply (供应) of art materials is low because it’s the end of the year. I’ll check with Mrs. Rice to see what she has.” Mrs. Rice, the art teacher, didn’t have any art materials. “I won’t be getting a supply until next year,” she said. The whole class was upset. “How can we enter the art competition without art materials?” asked Grace. “Maybe we can raise the money. We could have a book sale,” suggested Hal. “I don’t think there is time,” Mrs. Simon said. “Let’s use the paper in the recycling bin.” Pablo offered an idea. He seldom spoke up, so everyone was surprised. “Why would you use old paper?” Hal asked. “To save trees and protect the Earth.” replied Pablo. “We can also use this old string (线) and these wire hangers (铁丝衣架),” added Grace. Now the class had to decide what to do with the materials. Pablo had another idea. “We can fold the paper into the cranes.” Mrs. Simon taught the children how to fold (折叠) a paper into cranes. Then everyone helped tie the cranes to a frame (架子) to make a mobile. On the day of the competition, the paper crane mobile hung in a large community center room. The huge space was crowded with art works. The crane mobile swayed (摇摆) gently as people walked past, and the paper cranes appeared to be softly flying. The paper crane mobile turned out to be a big success and won the prize for the most creative use of materials. The whole class proudly accepted their prize. Grace said, “We made our art work, and we saved the Earth at the same time.” 10.Why did the class feel upset at the beginning of the story? A.Because no one would like to enter the competition. You can choose and cook the meals, as long as they’re healthy.” Mom suggested. Excited. Matt declared, “Good, we’re going to eat good food every night!” The next day, Dad helped Matt create a meal plan. As Matt excitedly listed his favorite meals, Dad reminded him about including vegetables and sides. “Oh, yeah. Um, we can have corn with the chicken.” Matt said. “Sophia does not like corn.” said Dad. “Well, it’s my choice, so I’m going to make corn.” Matt replied. “OK, but she might complain at dinner tonight. Are you ready for that?” Dad asked. “Yeah, whatever. ” Matt answered. Planning the meals proved more challenging than Matt expected, as he faced constant reminders of family preferences. Frustrated, he shouted, “This is impossible!” “Yes, it is hard. How are we going to eat, otherwise?” said Mom. That would mean giving up your soccer and Sophia’s gymnastics, and maybe even moving to a smaller house. Do you think that’s worth it? ” She asked. Realizing the sacrifice (牺牲) involved, Matt decided to cook. Again, he was tired and hungry when dinner was finally ready. “I don’t like corn.” cried Sophia. Matt didn’t yell back; instead, he apologized, realizing how hard it was to cook and meet everyone’s tastes. “I don’t want to take over dinner anymore, and I won’t complain Sorry.” Matt said. “You’ve done a great job, and it’s a valuable learning experience.” Dad said. Passage 2 (24-25九年级上·北京育才学校·期中) Playing for Peace John Hunter, a primary school teacher, created the World Peace Game as a way for his students to think about big world problems. The World Peace Game is played on a cube (立方体)of four layers. In the game, there are four countries with 50 interconnected problems to solve. The students play a role in developing solutions to the problems of their assigned (指定的)country. The goal of the game is to save each country from dangerous conditions. When all 50 problems are solved, the game is over, which means the world is in peace. You might think that the task of solving real-world problems would be daunting to world leaders, let alone fourth graders. Julianne Swope, one of Hunter's students, agrees. "Sometimes the World Peace Game feels like, you know? The weight of the world on your shoulders: This is firing over there and this is a big earthquake, she says. "But I say to myself, I need to fix this." The game shows that young children have the desire to make the world a better, more peaceful place. The game encourages students to work together and communicate with one another. Students think about questions that have no clear answers, which often leads to long discussions. They consider deep questions in the process and think about the possible results of their decisions. They try to develop creative solutions that lead to a satisfactory decision. It is no surprise that both Hunter and the World Peace Game are becoming well known. Hunter now spends part of his time teaching the World Peace Game to other teachers. Schools in other countries have started their own versions (版本)of the game as well. Hunter hopes that by playing for peace, students learn  "how to make people not experience so much pain. " He adds, "I think I now hope the game helps people be kinder. " One of his former students, Irene Newman, is now studying peace in her university. She believes the world will be more peaceful if young people are to solve its problems. 29.How is the World Peace Game played? A.Students team up to play the game online. B.Students answer 50 questions during the game. C.Students come up with solutions to 50 problems. D.Students list the dangerous conditions of four countries. 30.The word "daunting” in Paragraph 3 probably means "________". His room had many little things he made by himself. Tim wanted to make the best robot ever and join the yearly Robot Competition. But he had a problem: he didn’t have enough money to buy the parts he needed. One day, while walking home from school, Tim passed by the local recycling center. An idea occurred to him. Why not use recycled materials to build his robot? It was the perfect chance to show his creativity and promote environmental protection. Tim began collecting things from the recycling center: a metal box that could serve as the robot’s chest and a variety of wires and batteries from outdated electronics. He spent hours working in his workshop. His hands moved carefully as he brought his imagination to life. News of Tim’s project spread through his school. Some students laughed, wondering whether a robot made from trash could compete with the high-tech creations of other teams. But Tim didn’t mind. He thought being creative was about making the most of what he had. As the competition came near, Tim’s robot, which he named “EcoBot,” was ready. It was a wonder of recycled technology, with a shiny metal outside and a series of LED lights that shone in different patterns. EcoBot could walk, talk and even sort recyclables into different groups. On the day of the competition, the gym was filled with people. Teams with stylish, expensive robots took their turns showing their projects. Finally, it was Tim’s turn. His hands were cold and his heart raced as he brought EcoBot onto the stage. He felt really nervous. Taking a deep breath, he began to show his robot. EcoBot moved smoothly, sorting recyclables with ease and even performing a small dance. The judges were impressed not only with the robot’s function but also with its unique design and the story behind it. In the end, EcoBot won the competition, beating out robots that cost hundreds of times more than what Tim had spent. The victory was more than a win for Tim; it was a victory for creativity and the power of thinking out of the box. 32.What was Tim’s problem in building a robot for the competition? A.He didn’t have the necessary tools. B.He couldn’t find a recycling center. C.He couldn’t afford to get the parts he needed. D.He didn’t have enough time to build the robot. 33.How did Tim feel when he brought EcoBot onto the stage? A.Proud. B.Nervous. C.Confident. D.Uninterested. 34.What can we learn from the passage? A.Happy. B.Curious. C.Proud. “Oh, yeah.
