【48题详解】
根据前文“In 1850, Meucci and his wife, Ester, moved to New York. Meucci was worried about his wife, because she had become very ill.”和后文“To solve this problem, he connected metal cables between his home and his workshop.”可知,梅乌奇很担心他的妻子,想和妻子保持联系,E 选项“他需要随时和她保持联系。”承接上文,符合语境。故选E。
【49题详解】

There are three parts of the GPS. The first part is the receiver. You can hold it in your hand or fix it into your car, plane, etc. The second part is a group of satellites orbiting (绕……轨道运行) the Earth. The third part is a network of ground stations. They are all over the world and can control the satellites and make sure they are working well. Some people think that in the future the GPS will be as common as the mobile phones.
