Two years ago, my son sat me down for a talk. "Mom, it's time," he said. "Hear me out: It's time we got actual TV. And you need an iPhone."
This funny conversation two years ago marked a change in our relationship. Perhaps for the first time, I began to really listen to John's opinion about our home technology. Since his reasoning was sound and his suggestions were acceptable, I took his advice and was pleasantly surprised with the results.
I'd known for a while that my son understands technology better than I do. On airplanes, he grabbed my phone to put it in airplane mode. He wired the speakers in our house. After something was stolen from our front yard, he picked out, set up, and now monitors our security camera. When my computer died, I took him shopping with me.
He has a busy social life, with skateboarding, basketball, and online gaming. I see our time together reduced and our shared interests shrinking. That's why I jumped at the chance when a friend mentioned writing technology reviews. When I presented the idea to my teen, he immediately accepted.
It's changed our relationship in surprising ways. Where he used to get annoyed quickly at my technical ignorance, he's learned to be more patient and explain things to me in a way that I can convey to an equally unknowing audience. The Parent-child relationship is not only changed; it's even slightly reversed (逆转). He's leading me. I'm asking him for help and advice.
My son has risen to the occasion. He's taking it seriously, and to watch him mature in this way is an honor. As someone not much of a reader, he now searches instruction booklets. He's even emailed and called—yes, made an actual phone call—to customer service or tech support when products weren't working as expected.
I never imagined being a tech reviewer, but it's proved to be a valuable way to learn from, work with, and enjoy time with my teen.
24. What did the author think of her son's advice?
A. Unique. B. Normal. C. Funny. D. Practical.
25. What does the author say about her son in paragraph 3?
A. He is skilled at technology. B. He leads a very busy life.
C. He tries to make peace with her. D. He helps with housework.
26. Why did the author accept writing technology reviews eagerly?
A. To make more money to support the family.
B. To keep a close relationship with her son.
C. To learn more about modern technology.
D. To get some products for free.
27. What made the author feel honored?
A. Her son's patience to explain technical things.
B. Her son's control of the parent-child relationship.
C. Her son's careful attitude towards the reviews.
D. Her son's rich knowledge of technical terms.

Life can be so wonderful, full of adventure and joy. It can also be full of challenges, setbacks(挫折) and heartbreaks. Whatever our circumstances, we generally still have dreams, hopes and desires—that little something more we want for ourselves and our loved ones. Yet knowing we can have more can also create a problem, because when we go to change the way we do things, up come the old patterns(模式) and pitfalls (陷阱) that stopped us from seeking what we wanted in the first place.
This tension between what we feel we can have and what we're seemingly able to have is the annoying suffering, the anxiety we feel. This is where we usually think it's easier to just give up. But we're never meant to let go of the part of us that knows we can have more. The intelligence behind that knowing is us—the real us. It's the part that believes in life and its possibilities. If you drop that, you begin to feel a little "dead" inside because you're dropping "you".
So, if we have this ability but somehow life seems to keep us stuck, how do we break these patterns?
Decide on a new course and make one decision at a time. This is good advice for a new adventure or just getting through today's challenges.
While, deep down, we know we can do it, our mind—or the minds of those close to us—usually say we can't. That isn't a reason to stop. It's just the mind, that little man or woman on your shoulder, trying to talk you out of something again. It has done it many times before. It's all about starting simple and doing it now.
Decide and act before overthinking. When you do this you may feel a little or large release from the jail of your mind and you'll be on your way.
28. What can be inferred from the first paragraph?
A. Think it through and we will live a simple life.
B. We are not sure when we choose to make changes.
C. We may be the ones who stop us moving on.
D. We are tired of what we already have.
29. What is the key to breaking the old patterns?
A. To focus on every detail.
B. To decide and take immediate action.
C. To listen to those close to us.
D. To think twice before we act.
30. Which of the following best explains the underlined part in the last paragraph?
A. Escape from your punishment.
B. Realization of your dreams.
C. Freedom from your tension.
D. Reduction of your expectations.
31. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Letting go of doubt; fighting for success
B. Changing yourself; changing your future
C. Giving up the past; welcoming the new life
D. Following your heart; shaking off old patterns
D
As students return to school this fall, many of them—perhaps especially those from historically disadvantaged student groups—will be starting the academic year with achievement levels lower than where they were at the beginning of summer break. This phenomenon (现象) is sometimes referred to as summer learning loss. We review what is known about summer loss and offer suggestions for schools looking to solve the problem.
Recently there are a lot of studies on summer loss. One study found that students, on average, lost between 25—30 percent of their school-year learning over the summer; additionally, black and Latino students tended to gain less over the school year and lose more over the summer compared to white students.
However, a national study found little evidence (证据) of overall loss over the summers after grades K and 1, and the summer loss gaps widened in some subjects and grades but not others. Von Hippel and Hamrock re-analyzed two earlier data sets and concluded that gaps "do not necessarily... grow fastest over the summer". Thus, it seems summer loss can be found, though not universally, across geography, grade level or subject.
Schools want to address summer learning loss not only because it may widen achievement gaps, but also because it "wastes" so much of the knowledge students have gained during the school year. Summer loss also undoubtedly increases the amount of time teachers have to spend "re-teaching" last year's content.
Traditionally, educators and policymakers have relied on old summer school programs to solve summer learning loss. Not surprisingly, research suggests that programs are more effective when students attend consistently and spend more time on task academically. Regardless of the design, these policies should offer different options for students over the summer so that summer learning programs do not feel like punishment for students who would rather be enjoying summer vacation. Doing so would set more students up for success as the school year gets underway.
32. What's the author's aim by writing paragraph 1?
A. To make a comparison. B. To offer some suggestions.
C. To introduce a topic. D. To attract readers.
33. According to the studies, what can we know about summer learning loss?
A. Immigrant students experienced the most summer learning loss.
B. Senior students did not lose learning over the summer.
C. Summer learning loss after grades K and 1 was alarming.
D. Summer learning loss seemed different in grades and subjects.
34. Why do schools want to solve the problem according to the fourth paragraph?
A. It may narrow achievement gaps.
B. It may cause teachers to repeat their teaching.
C. It may stop students gaining more knowledge.
D. It may increase teachers' new teaching content.
35. What does the author think of summer school programs?
A. Students should do all academic tasks.
B. The traditional programs are ineffective.
C. Students should have access to more choices.
D. The programs are punishment for many students.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
When I was seven years old, my family moved from Mexico to America. In Mexico, I was a cheerful girl who loved making people laugh with my jokes and inventing fun games to play with my friends. __36__
We lived in a small house with a modest yard where we grew vegetables—my responsibility. While I took pride in watching them grow, there were times when I dreamed of having a beautiful garden like my schoolmate Luella’s, with its delicate tulips(郁金香). Although Luella lived in the same neighborhood as me, we barely knew each other.
__37__ The tornado struck on a Sunday afternoon. The gentle breeze transformed into a strong wind, and thick gray clouds filled the sky. Gradually, the tornado took shape, starting as a thin rope and growing into a large black funnel(漏斗). My entire family gathered in the bathroom, seeking shelter from the storm. __38__ After the storm had passed, our worries and fears were replaced by relief that we were unharmed and that our house had remained undamaged.
__39__ Across the street, a tall tree had fallen, destroying Luella’s garden in front of her yellow house. We hurried over to check on it. Fortunately, her family seemed to be away at the time, and no one was injured. However, her once-beautiful garden was in ruins, with the fallen tree destroying the tulips and debris(碎片) spread everywhere. I could only imagine how heartbroken they must feel seeing this.
Then my mom’s usual words rang in my ears, “It is more blessed to give than to receive,” and my family started to think about how we could help.
__40__ Empathy surged within me as I saw the shock and disbelief on their faces. I couldn’t help but approach Luella, tightly holding her hands. To uplift Luella’s spirits and bring her comfort, I tried my best to cheer her up while tidying the garden with her, during which my own joyful personality seemed to come back a bit.
A. Terrified, I sat close to my mom, knees in my chest.
B. We tried series of measures to make Luella relieved.
C. Just at that moment, Luella’s family returned in their car.
D. Strong as a tornado was, it made no difference to our friendship.
E. It was after a tornado that Luella and I finally became close friends.
F. In America, however, I found it hard to fit in, and I became quieter.
G. Stepping outside, I witnessed the damage the tornado had caused to our neighborhood.
