M: How come? Why didn’t you use the map apps on your phone?
W: My phone died when I got off the bus. I turned to some kind passers-by, but none of them knew the store.
M: That’s unfortunate. Then how did you find it?
W: Well, I noticed a road sign in front of a bakery shop. Then I followed it and some other road signs to my destination.
M: Well, I think you rely too much on the phone apps, which affects your sense of direction.
W: Indeed.
M: There is a tip for improving your sense of direction. You could “get lost” on purpose, which means taking some unfamiliar routes.
W: To force myself to find the right direction, right?
M: Exactly! Sometimes, just remembering landmarks like the children’s hospital won’t work.
W: I will give it a shot. I used to turn street names into funny stories to make them easier to remember, but failed.

W: Yes. I stayed in the Grimsby for a whole year. My parents thought the medical care there was better. Since then, I’ve been taking online courses.
M: Is studying online better than being at school?
W: In some ways, it is. I can work at my own pace, and there isn’t much pressure. Plus, my grades haven’t suffered at all. But I do miss communicating with classmates face to face.
M: I can relate to you on that. I’m taking a college biology program online now.
W: Oh, that’s great! Then do you still hang out with anyone from our old class?
M: Yeah, a lot of them. You should come to our meet-up next week. It’ll be fun!
W: I’d love to! Message me the details.
M: Absolutely, I’ll send them over. It’s really nice to see you again.

It’s always a fantastic idea to take some time to catch up with your family and friends and to share special moments together, whether it’s a family vacation, a birthday celebration, or a graduation party. If you’re planning a trip with young children, the Disneyland in California is an excellent choice. Last summer, I celebrated my daughter’s birthday there after she graduated from kindergarten. To get to the Disneyland, you can fly into the Los Angeles International Airport. From there, it’s a 50-minute drive to the Disneyland Hotel, and then another 5-minute drive or a 15-minute walk to reach the park itself. We chose the hotel because it is convenient and is at a reasonable price. Hotel guests can enter the park 30 minutes before it opens to the general public. The hotel also provides a breakfast buffet with your stay. You can also choose a themed room that suits your family’s interests: Wild Adventure, Brave Princess, or Magic Journey. Since my daughter wasn’t that into princess-themed rooms, she chose the last one to experience something different from home life. We had many unforgettable memories during our stay there. I hope you are inspired to start planning a vacation there. It’s a great way to create lasting memories with loved ones!

My oldest brother Jimmy Nichols became my hero when he was 11 or 12 years old. He was riding his bicycle on the rough road, passing by the local beer joint in Hewett, when he heard a loud thundering noise and glanced around to discover an unoccupied coal truck, partially loaded with coal, rolling down a small hill directly toward the beer joint, which was full of local men and coal miners who had stopped on their way home from a hard day at the mines to grab a cold beer.
Without hesitation, Jimmy pedaled (蹬) his bike faster than the rolling coal truck, grabbed the handle, opened the door, jumped inside the truck, applied the brakes and the emergency brake, and brought the truck to a stop, saving many lives. He then got out of the truck, found a few big rocks, pushed them under the truck wheels for extra safety, and without saying a word to anyone, quietly rode away on his bike.
He came home and didn’t mention anything about it to any of us. Several days later, we knew about the incident from one lady who witnessed it. Learning from other people in bits and pieces of stories from here and there, I began to see that being a hero was a common occurrence for my brother. He was never given a medal and never once said, “Guess what I did?” He was never in the newspapers until he died in a car accident at age 27.
I am sure there were many other heroic acts that nobody saw or knew about except Jimmy himself. He will be my hero for all of my life because he taught me that heroes do not need notice, applause, or public praise to feel good about themselves on the inside. He taught me that we should do whatever is needed to be done in an instant, without hesitation and without expecting the gratefulness, admiration, or praise of others.
24. What might cause the truck to roll down?
A. The driver’s drunk driving. B. The braking system failure.
C. Being overloaded with coal. D. Being parked on an uneven road.
25. How did the author learn about the incident?
A. Jimmy told the author when he got home. B. The author read about it in the newspapers.
C. A witness informed the author of the incident. D. Some surviving miners came to thank Jimmy.
26. Which words can best describe Jimmy?
A. Ambitious and brave. B. Modest and selfless.
C. Cautious and responsible. D. Outgoing and helpful.
27. What does the author want to convey in the text?
A. Heroes deserve medals and public praise. B. Unsung heroes long to help the needy out.
C. Heroic acts will be remembered by others. D. Heroism is brave acts without seeking fame.
D 25. C 26. B 27. D
根据第一段“He was riding his bicycle on the rough road, passing by the local beer joint in Hewett, when he heard a loud thundering noise and glanced around to discover an unoccupied coal truck, partially loaded with coal, rolling down a small hill directly toward the beer joint, which was full of local men and coal miners who had stopped on their way home from a hard day at the mines to grab a cold beer. (他骑着自行车在崎岖不平的道路上行驶,经过休伊特当地的一家啤酒店,这时他听到一声巨响,环顾四周,发现一辆空着的运煤卡车,部分装载着煤,正从一座小山上直奔啤酒店而去,那里挤满了当地人和煤矿工人,他们在矿井辛苦了一天,在回家的路上停下来喝杯冰啤酒)”和第二段“Without hesitation, Jimmy pedaled (蹬) his bike faster than the rolling coal truck, grabbed the handle, opened the door, jumped inside the truck, applied the brakes and the emergency brake, and brought the truck to a stop, saving many lives.
根据第三段“He came home and didn’t mention anything about it to any of us. Several days later, we knew about the incident from one lady who witnessed it. (他回到家,没有对我们任何人提起这件事。几天后,我们从一位目击者那里得知了这件事)” 可知,作者是从一位目击者那里得知这一事件的,故选C。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“He then got out of the truck, found a few big rocks, pushed them under the truck wheels for extra safety, and without saying a word to anyone, quietly rode away on his bike. (然后他从卡车里出来,找了几块大石头,把它们推到卡车轮子下面,以增加安全性,然后没有对任何人说一句话,静静地骑着自行车走了)”和第三段“He was never given a medal and never once said, “Guess what I did?” (他从来没有被授予过奖章,也从来没有说过“猜猜我做了什么?”)”可知,吉米救人后静静离开,也从不炫耀自己做过的事情,说明他很谦虚;再根据最后一段“He taught me that we should do whatever is needed to be done in an instant, without hesitation and without expecting the gratefulness, admiration, or praise of others. (他教导我,我们应该立即做任何需要做的事,不要犹豫,也不要期待别人的感激、钦佩或赞美)”说明吉米是无私的,故选B。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其最后一段“He will be my hero for all of my life because he taught me that heroes do not need notice, applause, or public praise to feel good about themselves on the inside. He taught me that we should do whatever is needed to be done in an instant, without hesitation and without expecting the gratefulness, admiration, or praise of others. (他将是我一生的英雄,因为他教会了我,英雄不需要关注、掌声或公众的赞扬来让自己内心感觉良好。他教导我,我们应该立即做任何需要做的事,不要犹豫,也不要期待别人的感激、钦佩或赞美)” 可知,文章通过讲述吉米救人的事迹,表达了英雄主义是不求名利的勇敢行为,故选D。

From paying for school and taking exams to finding internships (实习), college students can face overwhelming pressure and demands. Societal, environmental, financial and relational factors are also leading to particularly high levels of stress and mental health concerns, experts say. Most students are also adapting to an unfamiliar environment, living independently for the first time and facing new responsibilities. It can mean overload for some.
“In college, you have to be managing your time between multiple courses and commitments,” says Leslie Rith-Najarian, a licensed psychologist and psychology lecturer at the University of California-Los Angeles. “Those instructors aren’t coordinating (协调) with each other, so it requires a lot of time management at a time when many students are learning how to manage their schedules on their own for the first time.”
While some stress can be healthy and even motivating, research shows high stress levels are affecting some students’ decisions about pursuing a degree. In a study that surveyed 6,000 first-year college students in October 2024, about one-third said they considered dropping out during that fall semester, adding emotional stress and mental health struggles as the two main reasons.
Followed by the feeling like they didn’t belong, sky-high educational expenses was the next most common reason, according to findings in the State of Higher Education 2025 report, based on the study conducted by Gallup and the Lumina Foundation. “The feeling of not belonging is particularly concerning for this age group,” says Vaile Wright, senior director of health care innovation at the American Psychological Association.
“We know that social connection is a huge buffer (缓冲) to stress, and if one is sort of feeling like he can’t use that coping skill, it just lends himself to more loneliness and more isolation,” she adds. “That’s a troubling cause of more significant depression.”
28. Why do college students face time management challenges?
A. Campus facilities are insufficient for study. B. Instructors fail to balance course workloads.
C. Financial pressures limit access to resources. D. Social media disturbs students’ focus on study.
29. Which reason ranked third for students’ considering dropping out in 2024?
A. Study cost. B. Sense of belonging. C. Campus adaptation. D. Academic pressure.
30. What do we know from Vaile Wright’s statement about social connection?
A. Social media has replaced real-life interactions.
B. Lack of social ties raised the risk of depression.
C. Competitive social environments worsen stress.
D. The coping skill enhances academic performance.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. College academic advisors’ role in time management.
B. Strategies to reduce the emotional stress in university.
C. Factors causing student stress and mental health issues.
D. The impact of social media on the mental health of students.
B 29. A 30. B 31. C

根据第二段““In college, you have to be managing your time between multiple courses and commitments,” says Leslie Rith-Najarian, a licensed psychologist and psychology lecturer at the University of California-Los Angeles. “Those instructors aren’t coordinating (协调) with each other, so it requires a lot of time management at a time when many students are learning how to manage their schedules on their own for the first time.”(“在大学里,你必须在多门课程和各项事务之间进行时间管理,”加州大学洛杉矶分校持证心理学家兼心理学讲师莱斯利·里斯-纳贾里安表示,“这些老师彼此之间没有协调,所以在许多学生第一次学习如何管理自己的时间表时,这需要大量的时间管理。”)”
根据第三段中“In a study that surveyed 6,000 first-year college students in October 2024, about one-third said they considered dropping out during that fall semester, adding emotional stress and mental health struggles as the two main reasons.(2024年10月对6000名大一学生进行的一项调查显示,约三分之一的学生表示,他们在那个秋季学期考虑过退学,情绪压力和精神健康问题是两个主要原因)”和第四段中“Followed by the feeling like they didn’t belong, sky-high educational expenses was the next most common reason (高昂的教育费用是下一个最常见的原因,其次是感觉他们不属于这里)”可知,2024年学生考虑退学的第三大原因是高昂的教育费用。故选A项。
根据最后一段中““We know that social connection is a huge buffer (缓冲) to stress, and if one is sort of feeling like he can’t use that coping skill, it just lends himself to more loneliness and more isolation,” she adds. “That’s a troubling cause of more significant depression.”(“我们知道,社会联系是缓解压力的一个重要缓冲,如果一个人觉得自己无法使用这种应对技巧,那么他就会更加孤独和孤立,”她补充道。“这是导致更严重抑郁症的一个令人不安的原因。”)”可推知,从维尔·赖特关于社会联系的陈述告诉我们缺乏社交联系会增加孤独感和抑郁风险。故选B项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段中“From paying for school and taking exams to finding internships (实习), college students can face overwhelming pressure and demands. Societal, environmental, financial and relational factors are also leading to particularly high levels of stress and mental health concerns, experts say.(从支付学费和参加考试到寻找实习机会,大学生可能会面临巨大的压力和要求。专家表示,社会、环境、经济和人际关系因素也导致了特别高的压力水平和心理健康问题)”可知,文章主要探讨了大学生面临压力和精神健康问题的多种因素,包括学业压力、经济负担、社会归属感缺失等,并分析了这些因素对学生决策的影响。由此可知,C项“Factors causing student stress and mental health issues.(导致学生压力和精神健康问题的因素)”能够概括文章大意。故选C项。
D
A new study has found that the 28 most populous cities in the United States — including New York, Chicago, Dallas and Denver — are sinking at rates between 2 and 10 millimeters per year.
Using satellite-based radar measurements, a team of researchers from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University developed high-resolution satellite maps of sinking land, or subsidence, across major US cities. In each of the 28 cities studied, at least 20% of the city was sinking; in 25 of the cities, at least 65% of the land was sinking.
Cities across Texas show the greatest rates of subsidence; with Houston taking the lead. There, some 40% of the city is sinking at more than 5 millimeters per year, while 12% of the city is sinking at 10 millimeters per year.
Even slight downward shifts in land can significantly affect the structural integrity of buildings, roads, bridges, and railways over time. Land subsidence isn’t uncommon around the world, with many areas subsiding due to natural geological processes. However, the Virginia Tech team concluded that 80% of urban subsidence in the US is caused by groundwater removal for human use. And, as cities grow, this problem may further worsen.
While subsidence certainly poses a risk for coastal cities, which are also under threat of sea level rise worsened by human-driven climate change, it also endangers inland cities, making them more likely to be flooded. Plus, different subsidence rates across a city can destabilize buildings and infrastructure
“The hidden nature of this risk means that infrastructure can be silently worsened over time with damage only becoming evident when it is severe or potentially disastrous,” Manoochehr Shirzaei, associate professor at Virginia Tech’s Earth Observation and Innovation Lab, said in a statement.
While we can’t entirely stop land subsidence under urban areas, we can work on mitigating it. According to the study, potential steps to take include improving land subsidence monitoring, revised groundwater management policies, and infrastructure planning.
32. How did the researchers get their findings?
A. Comparing previous data. B. Taking field measurements.
C. Making rough estimates. D. Analyzing satellite maps.
33. What can we infer about the land subsidence from the text?
A. It has little influence on the countryside. B. It can be solved in current ways in cities.
C. It will disappear as city population grows. D. It can cause severe infrastructure damage.
34. What does the underlined word “mitigating” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Worsening. B. Balancing. C. Reducing. D. Observing.
35. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Silent Threat: US Cities Sinking Due to Groundwater
B. Potential Steps to Monitor US Urban Land Subsidence
C. US Coastal Cities in Danger of Climate and Subsidence
D. The Land Subsidence in Texas: A Rising Urban Problem
D 33. D 34. C 35. A

根据第五段“Plus, different subsidence rates across a city can destabilize buildings and infrastructure (基础设施). (此外,整个城市不同的沉降率可能会使建筑物和基础设施不稳定。)”以及第六段““The hidden nature of this risk means that infrastructure can be silently worsened over time with damage only becoming evident when it is severe or potentially disastrous,” Manoochehr Shirzaei, associate professor at Virginia Tech’s Earth Observation and Innovation Lab, said in a statement. (弗吉尼亚理工大学地球观测与创新实验室副教授马努切赫尔·希尔扎伊在一份声明中表示:“这种风险的隐蔽性意味着,基础设施可能会在不知不觉中逐渐恶化,只有当损坏变得严重或可能引发灾难时,才会显现出来。”)”可推断,地面沉降会对基础设施造成严重破坏。故选D。
【34题详解】
词句猜测题。 根据划线词前一段““The hidden nature of this risk means that infrastructure can be silently worsened over time with damage only becoming evident when it is severe or potentially disastrous,” Manoochehr Shirzaei, associate professor at Virginia Tech’s Earth Observation and Innovation Lab, said in a statement. (弗吉尼亚理工大学地球观测与创新实验室副教授马努切赫尔·希尔扎伊在一份声明中表示:“这种风险的隐蔽性意味着,基础设施可能会在不知不觉中逐渐恶化,只有当损坏变得严重或可能引发灾难时,才会显现出来。”)”以及划线词所在句“While we can’t entirely stop land subsidence under urban areas, we can work on mitigating it. (虽然我们不能完全阻止城市地区的地表沉降,但我们可以努力mitigating沉降。)”可知,这种损害只有在严重时才会显现,所以虽然不能完全阻止城市地区的地表沉降,但是可以减轻沉降。所以推断mitigating的意思是“减轻”。故选C。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。 根据全文内容,特别是根据第一段“A new study has found that the 28 most populous cities in the United States — including New York, Chicago, Dallas and Denver — are sinking at rates between 2 and 10 millimeters per year. (一项新研究发现,美国人口最多的28个城市——包括纽约、芝加哥、达拉斯和丹佛——正以每年2至10毫米的速度下沉。)”以及第四段“However, the Virginia Tech team concluded that 80% of urban subsidence in the US is caused by groundwater removal for human use. (然而,弗吉尼亚理工大学的研究小组得出结论,美国80%的城市沉降是由人类使用地下水造成的。)”可知,本文主要介绍的是美国城市正面临下沉问题,而这个问题主要是由地下水使用造成的。A项“Silent Threat; US Cities Sinking Due to Groundwater (无声的威胁:美国城市因地下水而下沉)”概括了文章的主要内容,适合作标题。故选A。

I am on a roller coaster, slowly going up. Lily, my eight-year-old cousin, sits beside me. “This is boring. It’s not what I expected,” she says, looking over the side. “It will get better,” I tell her, as well as myself, “See the top, up ahead? That’s where we start to go down.”
This is her first roller coaster, ride, and so far, she’s not impressed. I try to distract (使分心) us by pointing out that the people below are getting smaller. “They’re not actually getting smaller,” she says with a roll of her eyes. “It’s how it looks from up here,” I’m surprised that she understands “perspective”, something I learned in middle school.
The climb is about to turn into a drop, and my hands start to tremble. I don’t like roller coasters. I’d rather sit on the sofa with a glass of juice. So how do I end up here?
It started last Sunday, when my mum intentionally mentioned, “It’s Lily’s birthday next week. She wants to ride the roller coaster.” I felt uneasy, hoping to pass it off. “So can you…” my mum inquired. I immediately protested, “I’m afraid of roller coasters! You all know that!” She gave me that look a mum would give to a teenage daughter in moments like this.
And here I am, on a roller coaster with my cousin Lily. I close my eyes and scream throughout the entire ride. When it’s over, I open my eyes and let go of the safety bar. Lily is super excited, describing every dip (俯冲) and turn. Her eyes sparkle with excitement as she claps her hands in delight.
Then we reach the photo display. There’s Lily, laughing and happy, Next to her, I look like a scared mess, with closed eyes. “Lisa, you want this photo or not?” she says. Deep down, I don’t want this photo to become a family joke. But, it is her birthday, and I just want to make her happy.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
“The ride is not that scaring, right?” Lily pronounces.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I promise her I will try and smile this time.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
“The ride is not that scaring, right?” Lily pronounces. Looking at me with her innocent eyes filled with expectation and concern, she gently suggests we try again and open my eyes to really see the amazing view. Then she continues to explain that the thrill of the roller coaster is in the feeling of freedom and the breathtaking views. Most importantly, she wants a special photo with me, capturing our shared adventure. Her enthusiasm is infectious, and I understand how much this means to her. Maybe I should face my fear and embrace the moment, however terrifying.
I promise her I will try and smile this time. As we climb back into the roller coaster, I take a deep breath. The ride begins, I feel the familiar rush of fear but force my eyes open. I make it! When we reach the end, we rush to the photo display, and there we are — both smiling, our eyes sparkling with joy Hugging Lily tightly, I sincerely wish her a happy birthday. Feeling a sense of pride and gratitude, I value the lesson from an eight-year-old; sometimes, facing our fear can lead to unforgettable moments and unexpected happiness.
