Learn How to Have a Learning Vacation
Going on a vacation to learn a skill you have long wanted to pick up sounds like a good getaway, but be cautious, said John Spence, the president of a travel company in Calif. “If you don’t pick the right skill for you, or go in with unrealistic expectations, your precious time off won’t be enjoyable,” he said.
Here, he shares his advice on planning a learning vacation that you won’t regret taking:
Follow your passion (热情). 1 . They include cooking, photography, art history, farming or a sport such as diving or horseback riding. To get the most out of the trip, choose something you’re passionate about.
2 ? With whatever skill you intend to learn, figure out whether you want an immersion (沉浸) or only to occupy a part of your trip. It’s possible to learn cooking basics, for example, by taking a weeklong course at Ballymaloe Cookery School in Ireland. Another option is to attend several half-day classes at the school and have more free time to explore the destination itself. “ 3 , so make sure that it’s what you really want,” Mr. Spence said.
Consider your budget. No matter the skill, you can learn it by taking a vacation in a wide range of price ranges. 4 . If you want to learn scuba diving (水肺式潜泳), for example, heading to the Maldives will cost several thousand dollars per person, while a scuba diving trip to the Florida Keys is a more wallet-friendly choice.
Don’t forget the children. 5 , provided that they are fun. “Yes, you want your kids to learn, but you don’t want them to be bored by overloading them with too much information,” Mr. Spence said.

Passage 4
(24-25高一上·四川雅安·开学考试)We all want to make lasting changes to our daily behaviors from time to time — perhaps exercise more or spend less time on our phones before bed. But how long does it take to build a habit?
1 This number first appeared in a book by Dr. Maxwell Maltz. He reported that his patients needed at least 21 days to change the mental image of how they looked.
Since then, many people have applied the “21-day rule” to all habits. 2 Some may need more than three weeks to become habits.
How long it takes to form a new habit may depend on the habit, on you, and on what methods you’re using to build and maintain it. Studies have shown that habit formation may take anywhere between 18 and 254 days. The average amount of time needed for a behavior to become a habit is 66 days. 3 For example, those who were asked to develop a habit of drinking a glass of water at breakfast tended to (往往会) be more successful than those who were asked to do 50 sit-ups each day.
In addition, self-efficacy (自我效能感) is the key to developing and maintaining habits. 4 Put simply, a person who doesn’t think he can maintain new behaviors will be less likely to keep his habit,
It’s also important to make a goal more attractive. Mark Vahrmeyer, a doctor who helps people deal with mental health problems, says,“If the process of building your habit involves nothing but self-sacrifice (自我牺牲) with no reward, you are unlikely to stick to your goals.” 5 For example, if the goal is to go to the gym three times a week, a person should pick a gym with a convenient location.
A.A popular answer is 21 days.
B.It’s also important to repeat a habit.
C.However, not all behaviors are the same.
D.Habits are the small decisions you make every day.
E.He also advises making the process as easy as possible.
F.And different actions require a different level of effort too.
G.It’s a belief in one’s ability to complete a task or achieve a goal.
Passage 5
Music is part of our life. 1 It is the best tool to use when you’ve had a hard day. There are some other great uses for your collection of slow tracks.
Pregnancy (孕期)
2 Since fetal (胎儿) brain development begins in the fifth week, it might be a great idea to try to get your baby in a relaxed state early on. Some mothers do this by putting earphones over their bellies.
High Stress Tasks
3 The tendency of relaxing sounds to slow you down may really be good for you even if you are trying to push yourself to meet a deadline. Slowing down means you have a better chance at working more carefully and preventing big mistakes.
4
Going to see the doctor or the dentist can be somewhat scary experiences. You might therefore want to request some calming music. 5 If yours doesn’t, you might want to bring your own sounds stored in a device so you can have a more personal experience listening to them with earphones.
A.Medical Appointments
B.Important Interviews
C.Most people tend to use calming music.
D.Many doctors actually already provide this.
E.Parents hope their babies can grow under calming music.

Passage 6
The key to losing weight is to understand what really motivates you. Have you ever been excited about losing a few pounds? 1 And to help you keep your weight under control, you need some coping strategies.
Ask questions. When you’re researching different dieting products and plans or even talking to a doctor about diets, ask as many questions as you can. 2 Ask questions like: Do I have to purchase special meals or supplements? Does the programme include a part to help me maintain my weight loss?
Get real. 3 Don’t burden yourself with unrealistic expectations. Remember, large amounts of weight loss are not realistic and are most likely not safe or healthy. Talk with your health care professional to determine a healthy weight goal.
4 To maintain your weight, you must keep a balance between your intake of calories and the energy you burn. Just 30 minutes of fast walking in most days can take about 10 pounds off your weight each year.
Weigh yourself weekly. It’s important to track your weight on any diet or weight loss plan, but don’t step on the scales every day. Weighing daily won’t show you the big picture. 5
A.Stay balanced.
B.Once a week is fine.
C.Stick with your healthy eating plan.
D.Losing one to two pounds a week is a realistic goal.
E.Being well-informed will help you choose the best diet for yourself.

Every time I listened to other students talking and laughing, I felt sad. I couldn’t talk with anyone about my problems. And I didn’t want my parents to worry about me.
Then one day, my classmates talked happily with their friends, but I sat at my desk unhappily as usual. 3 I didn’t know who he was. He passed me and then turned back. He looked at me, with a smile on his face.
Suddenly, I felt the touch of something bright and friendly. It made me feel happy, lively and warm.
4 I started to talk with other students and make friends. Day by day, I became closer to everyone in my class. The boy with the lucky smile has become my best friend now!

Passage 8
How to teach kids responsibility
We'd all like our kids to develop into responsible people. How can we help to ensure that our kids learn the lessons of responsibility? Here are some ideas:
Start them with tasks when they're young.
1 They can do a lot more than you think if you're patient and creative. Encourage them to begin at an early age, and this helps them build confidence and enthusiasm for later tasks in their life.
Don't use rewards with your kids.
If you want your kids to develop a natural sense of responsibility, they need to learn what they do affects others not just themselves. 2
Use natural consequences when they make mistakes.
If they keep losing their baseball glove somewhere, let them deal with the consequences. Maybe they have to ask to borrow one for the game. 3 If you rescue them every time they make a mistake, they'll never learn responsibility.
4
This is where they'll learn it from. Take care of your stuff. Try to be on time. They're watching you very closely.
Give them an allowance(零用钱) early in their life.
Let them make their own money decisions from an early age. They'll learn their lessons in a hurry. 5
A.Model responsible behavior for your kids.
B.Maybe they have to buy a new one if it's lost.
C.Don't help them out if they run out of money.
D.Train your kids to be responsible and careful.
E.They won't learn that if they're focused on what they're going to “get”.
F.Young kids have a strong desire to help out, even as young as age two.
G.They'll pick up on this belief and they'll tend to rise to the level of expectation.

2 Don’t be afraid to break your long-term goals into small steps to keep checking off along the way, and adjust the steps as you need. Having one goal is much harder to focus on than a few big goals or many small ones.
Remember what motivates you in the first place. Why do you start? It doesn’t matter which motivation drives you. As long as it keeps you going, then it’s practical. Your motivation may look different compared to your friend’s, but that’s OK. 3
Take motivation from others. Talk to your friends or read a book to find inspiration. Be open-minded and learn how others find motivation. 4 Motivation comes from various sources, and listening to others might expand your view on how to gain it.
Take a break. It’s perfectly fine to step away from whatever task you’re working on and take a short break. You can’t expect yourself to keep your motivation for eight hours straight. 5 This allows us to reset our minds, and be more efficient when we need to get back on track.
A.Start small.
B.Reward yourself for your efforts.

While it may have once made sense to dream about being a doctor, lawyer, or professional ballet dancer, many of the jobs open to you now are ones you didn’t know about as a child. 3 . The job that fits you could be one you’d never even imagined at age 10, 25, or even 40.

1.由“ When you're on a budget, it can be tough to think of ways to entertain the family that don't cost a lot of money.”
2.由“ Most libraries have everything from story times for children to game nights for teens”可知,大多数图书馆都有各种各样的活动,从为孩子准备的讲故事时段到青少年的游戏之夜。
3.由“ If there's no beach nearby, do the same in the sandbox at a playground.”
4.由“Most cities have at least one local community center. There, you can pick up a park and recreation schedule, with information on free events taking place throughout the year, such as hikes, holiday parties, art festivals, outdoor movies and concerts in the park.”
Passage 3
A.A little, or a lot
B.Don’t be influenced by others’ interests
C.What skill do you want to learn
D.Learning vacations can be great family trips, too
E.The options for what you can learn on your vacation are limitless
F.Having a clear idea of your budget will help you home in on the right trip
G.Spending your entire break devoted to learning something new can be stressful
【答案】1.E 2.A 3.G 4.F 5.D
1.根据后文“They include cooking, photography, art history, farming or a sport such as diving or horseback riding.(它们包括烹饪、摄影、艺术史、农业或一项运动,如潜水或骑马。)” E“The options for what you can learn on your vacation are limitless(在你的假期里,你可以学习的东西是无限的)”在句意上符合分析,句中“The options”与后文的“They”相呼应,前后衔接紧密。故选E项。
根据后文“With whatever skill you intend to learn, figure out whether you want an immersion or only to occupy a part of your trip.(无论你打算学习什么技能,弄清楚你是想沉浸在其中,还是只想占据你旅行的一部分。)” A“A little, or a lot(一点点,或者很多)”符合该段主旨要义。故选A项。
G“Spending your entire break devoted to learning something new can be stressful(把整个假期都花在学习新东西上可能会有压力)”解释了原因,即,整个假期都在学习会有压力,因此要慎重确定自己的需求。故选G项。
F“Having a clear idea of your budget will help you home in on the right trip(对你的预算有一个清晰的想法将帮助你踏上正确的旅程)”贴合主题,与前文“No matter the skill, you can learn it by taking a vacation in a wide range of price ranges.(不管你的技能是什么,你都可以通过各种价位的旅行来学习。)”
D“Learning vacations can be great family trips, too(学习假期也可以是很棒的家庭旅行)”在句意上承接了主题句,进行了进一步解释,与后文“provided that they are fun(前提是它们很有趣)”构成了条件结果关系。故选D项。

F.Regular weight checks will show you your progress over time.

When you’re researching different dieting products and plans or even talking to a doctor about diets, ask as many questions as you can.(问问题。当你在研究不同的节食产品和计划,甚至和医生谈论饮食时,尽可能多地问问题。)”以及下文“Ask questions like: Do I have to purchase special meals or supplements?

Passage 10
Life will always present challenges, but how you respond to them will lead your life’s tracks. To stay focused when you’re having a hard time, here are some things to keep in mind.
Reset your goals. Do you feel inspired by your life plan, or is it time for a new one? Are your goals realistic? 1 Taking a moment to pause and reflect will help ensure that your goals are attainable and will help grow your motivation.
C.If not, then take the time to set them again.
D.As a result, having a rest is a good habit to practice.
E.Stick with whatever motivates you, and don’t forget it.
F.The methods they use might cause some motivation for you.

【答案】1.F 2.D 3.G 4.B 5.A
1.根据空后“For example,is there one problem or actually several? Can you restate the problem in your own words?By spending time with the problem you will better understand it and be equipped to generate(产生)solutions.”
2.根据空后“Collect data, ask people or experts connected to the problem, look for resources online,in print,or elsewhere. Once you have data, organize it.”(收集数据,询问与这个问题有关的人或专家,在网上、印刷品或其他地方寻找资源。
3.根据空前“The first step in finding a solution is to look at data that you have gathered about the problem and to analyze its importance. ”(找到解决方案的第一步是查看您收集的有关问题的数据,并分析其重要性。)analyze和选项中analyzing一致,这里提到了分析,所以选G。
4.根据空后“You might do this on a limited, trial scale at first to test the results.Or,you might go all in.Keep in mind that unpredictable problems which you did not plan can arise at this stage. ”(你可以先在有限的试验范围内这样做,以测试结果。或者,你可以全力以赴。请记住,不可预测的问题,你没有计划会出现在这个阶段。)可知,这里给出了一些可以具体操作的事情,因此一旦你选择了最佳解决方案,一定要付诸实践,选B。

(23-24高二上·四川绵阳·阶段练习)Being “a grown-up” is a pretty unclear concept, even once you’re technically “grown-up”. My career has taken its fair share of twists and turns in the past three years since I graduated, and in some ways I feel like I’m still only starting to figure out what I want to do. 1 . So if you’re still pondering the question, here’s my advice for making the best of it.
2
In some ways, in decision about the future allows you to have a much more open mind about various career choices than those who’ve always known exactly what they want to do. If you limit yourself too much, you could miss the opportunity to join an exciting new startup, develop a great business idea, or try something unexpected that you might love.
Accept that the landscape is always changing
While it may have once made sense to dream about being a doctor, lawyer, or professional ballet dancer, many of the jobs open to you now are ones you didn’t know about as a child. 3 . The job that fits you could be one you’d never even imagined at age 10, 25, or even 40.
The concept of being a “grown-up” means that there’s a finish line to a personal and professional life that is, in reality, always changing. 4 this discovery will likely be the result of much trial and error, and you’ll probably find yourself fighting for new goals throughout much of your life.
5 Being grown-up means being satisfied with the journey you’ve chosen and enjoying the many different roads you’ve followed.
A.Do something
B.Embrace uncertainty
C.Even if the job has its disadvantages
D.The Internet transformed the professional landscape in totally unexpected ways
E.Truthfully, that grown-up person your childhood self once dreamed of might not exist
F.And I’ve learned that it’s OK not to know what you want to be even at a grown-up age
G.While you can hope that you’ll one day find a hobby or career that you’re enthusiastic about
1.设空处上文“My career has taken its fair share of twists and turns in the past three years since I graduated, and in some ways I feel like I’m still only starting to figure out what I want to do.(毕业后的三年里,我的职业生涯经历了不少曲折,在某些方面,我觉得自己才刚刚开始弄清楚自己想做什么)”指出作者已经工作三年,却仍然不确定自己想做什么,下文“So if you’re still pondering the question, here’s my advice for making the best of it.(所以,如果你还在思考这个问题,下面是我的建议,让你充分利用它)”提出了消除迷茫的具体建议,由此可推知在上文提到的事情上,作者已经经过反思收获了自己的答案,F项:And I’ve learned that it’s OK not to know what you want to be even at a grown-up age(我明白了,即使到了成年,不知道自己想成为什么也没关系)符合语境。且F项中的not to know what you want to be even at a grown-up age与上文中的still only starling to figure out what I want to do相呼应。故选F。
本段“In some ways, in decision about the future allows you to have a much more open mind about various career choices than those who’ve always known exactly what they want to do.(在某种程度上,对未来的决定让你在各种职业选择上比那些一直都知道自己想做什么的人有更开放的心态)”主要说明人们在对未来没有确定计划的时候,反而可以对职业选择有更开阔的思维,获得更多开拓新领域、尝试新想法的机会,由此可知,我们要接受生活中的不确定性,B项:Embrace uncertainty(接受不确定性)符合语境。故选B。
3.设空处上文“While it may have once made sense to dream about being a doctor, lawyer, or professional ballet dancer, many of the jobs open to you now are ones you didn’t know about as a child.(虽然梦想成为医生、律师或专业芭蕾舞演员曾经是有意义的,但现在向你开放的许多工作都是你小时候不知道的)”指出人们梦想的很多职业往往是在自己小时候完全没有了解过的,下文“The job that fits you could be one you’d never even imagined at age 10, 25, or even 40.(适合你的工作可能是你在10岁、25岁甚至40岁时从未想过的)”提出人们适合的工作可能是自己在10岁、25岁、甚至40岁时完全想象不到的,由此可推知,设空处应指出造成这一现象及导致后面结果的原因,D项:The Internet transformed the professional landscape in totally unexpected ways(互联网以完全意想不到的方式改变了专业领域)符合语境。
4.设空处下文“this discovery will likely be the result of much trial and error, and you’ll probably find yourself fighting for new goals throughout much of your life.(这个发现很可能是反复试验和错误的结果,你可能会发现自己在生命的大部分时间里都在为新的目标而奋斗)”指出这种发现很可能也是多次试错的结果,由此可推知设空处说明了人们获得某一发现,G项:While you can hope that you’ll one day find a hobby or career that you’re enthusiastic about(虽然你可以希望有一天你会找到一个你热爱的爱好或职业)符合语境,与下文构成明显的转折关系,且G项中的find a hobby or career that you’re enthusiastic about 是下文中this discovery的具体指代。故选G。
根据上文“My career has taken its fair share of twists and turns in the past three years since I graduated, and in some ways I feel like I’m still only starting to figure out what I want to do.(毕业后的三年里,我的职业生涯经历了不少曲折,在某些方面,我觉得自己才刚刚开始弄清楚自己想做什么)”可知,本文主要说明即使已经成年,人们对自己的未来还有很多不确定性,生活环境也一直在发生改变,设空处后一句“Being grown-up means being satisfed with the journey you’ve chosen and enjoying the many different roads you’ve followed.(成熟意味着对你选择的旅程感到满意,享受你走过的许多不同的道路。)” Truthfully, that grown-up person your childhood self once dreamed of might not exist(说实话,你童年时梦想的那个成年人可能并不存在)谈及曾经设想的自己或许永远不会实现,暗含这一意义,故E项符合语境。故选E。
