B In Antarctica, my team really wanted to capture the moment when emperor penguin (企鹅) chicks jump into the ocean for their first swim. We had been in Antarctica for two months before it was time for these chicks to fledge. Fledging is when birds grow feathers that help them fly or, in the case of penguins, swim. Mom and Dad have headed out to sea for good, and the five-month-old chicks are realizing their parents aren’t coming back: They must hunt for themselves. So these penguin “teenagers” form little groups and start waddling (摇摆) toward the sea together. The young penguins look messy as they shed the soft feathers that keep them warm and grow out their adult swimming feathers. Each has a unique boy-band-style haircut. The penguins must walk about 15 miles from the home atop an enormous ice shelf to reach the water’s edge. We follow the birds from afar on snowmobiles. They crowd together at the end of the path and stare down like, “what’s that?” They’ve never seen the ocean before! To my amazement, I see several hundred chicks gather at the edge of a 50-foot ice cliff! They stand together for four hours, staring at the rough water below. Finally one chick steps in front of the others, waddles to the edge of the cliff and dives off the side. I watch in fear, afraid the bird won’t resurface in the water after the long fall. But then it makes it, back up! It swims farther out to sea, never looking back. At first the other penguins are like “Oh my gosh, what did Steve just do?” But then they realize it’s safe to jump. They begin to pour off the cliff, several little soft balls at a time. Some jump off stylishly, and others slip and fall backward. Some even flap their wings as if they’ll fly. This dive is their entrance into adulthood. They’ll swim out to sea and won’t return to the home for several years. How lucky we are to see this huge moment in their lives. 24.What does fledging mean for penguins? A.They’ll fly like other birds. B.They’ll look for their parents. C.They’ll look cooler than ever. D.They’ll live an independent life. 25.How does the author feel about the young penguins at the cliff? A.Frightened. B.Concerned. C.Exited. D.Confused. 26.Who does “Steve” in the last paragraph refer to? A.The father penguin. B.The author. C.The first penguin to dive. D.The author’s teammate. 27.Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A.Dive into Adulthood B.Legends of Penguins C.Scenery in Antarctica D.Adventures in Antarctica C Jammed roads, loud noises, suffocating (令人窒息的) smog. For some people, living in the city can be stressful. But a growing body of research shows some city birds can be more aggressive than their rural twins, suggesting they too feel the pressures of city life. Generally, animals that live in cities tend to be bolder and more aggressive — both characteristics that enable them to survive in such complex habitats. “Individuals that can’t deal with constant disturbance, such as noise, people, cars, etc., would be unlikely to thrive in an urban habitat,” says Jeremy Hyman, a professor and department chair of biology at Western Carolina University. Some birds may become more aggressive because cities are rich in food sources — and so there’s strong competition to establish a foothold. “Only the most aggressive males can manage to hold a territory in this place where lots and lots of birds would like to have a territory,” says Hyman. But food scarcity may also make some urban species more aggressive, and so birds have to fight an awful lot in order to maintain a large enough territory to get the resources that they need. High levels of stress caused by noise and other factors might also play a role in making birds more aggressive, notes Hyman. In some cases, aggression seems to be “a worthwhile cost,” says Sarah Foltz, a behavioral ecologist at Radford University. However, a big unanswered question is whether birds learn to be aggressive during their lifetime. But what scientists do know is that some birds can be highly adaptable. “Aggression definitely has a genetic component to it,” says Foltz. “But also, we know that when we change environmental factors, birds change their aggression.” Overall, Foltz says scientists are still trying to understand just how much urban density (密度) different species can tolerate and which characteristics of an urban environment influence aggressiveness the most. “We’ve got all these little pieces,” she says, “But it’s still coming to gather to make a bigger picture, so it’s sort of an unfinished puzzle.” 28.Why are birds in the city more aggressive? A.They need to adapt the environment. B.They are annoyed by city’s disturbance. C.They have such characteristics in the rural. D.They hate people in the city. 29.What can be inferred from Hyman’s statements? A.Birds in the urban will die out. B.Male birds will occupy all the urban habitats. C.Conflict will always exist despite sufficient food. D.Stress plays a more critical role in bird’s aggressiveness. 30.What plays a role in birds’ aggression? A.Gene and environment. B.Evolution and structure. C.Body and environment. D.Gene and structure. 31.What does Foltz think of the research? A.Promising B.Common C.Critical D.Meaningless D For years, illegal hunters hunted lions without mercy along the border between Chad and Cameroon in north-central Africa. They killed so many of the animals that wildlife conservationists consider lions to be extinct in the region. But over the last decade, the governments of both nations have been working together to protect the area’s vast grassland and the many animals living there. Now, their efforts seem to be paying off. For the first time in 20 years, a lion has been spotted inside Chad’s Sena Oura National Park, located near the border with Cameroon. In February a remote camera shot a photograph of a beautiful grown-up female lion that was clearly in great health, the nonprofit Wildlife Conservation Society and the government of Chad revealed in a joint statement last week. In the image, which appears to have been taken at night, the big cat lay comfortably on the ground with her left paw (爪子) extended and her right paw bent toward her body. They suspect this female crossed the border into Chad from Bouba N’djida National Park in Cameroon, where overall lion numbers are on the rise. The two parks are near to one another, so it makes sense that lions would be returning to parts of their former range, including Sena Oura, according to the statement. Though this female is the only lion in the photograph, she’s likely not alone. “This is hugely encouraging, because grown-up females are the foundation of any lion population, and they are not big wanderers. They inhabit areas that have prey (猎物) and are safe to raise their babies in,” says director of the Wildlife Conservation Society’s big cat program, to BBC News. The new photo has given wildlife officials a renewed sense of optimism about the future of lions in West and Central Africa, where their numbers have dropped by roughly 66 percent since the early 1990s. Lions that inhabit this region are genetically (基因方面地) different from other groups, so their reappearance is especially valuable, according to the statement. 32.What was the situation like along the border between Chad and Cameroon? A.No one illegally hunted wild animals there. B.Lions there were once thought to be extinct. C.No conservation methods were taken to stop killing animals. D.The two governments failed to reach an agreement on wildlife protection. 33.What can be learned about the lion caught by the camera? A.It was a healthy female one. B.It was sensitive to the surroundings. C.It was spotted on the Cameroon side. D.It had been in the national park for 20 years. 34.What might the future of lions there be like according to the last paragraph? A.Terrible. B.Promising. C.Ambiguous. D.Debatable. 35.Why is the reappearance of lions in West and Central Africa valuable? A.Their population is large. B.They are unlikely to wander away. C.They are a genetically unique group. D.Their hunting skills are incomparable. Benefits of Owning a Dog There’s a reason why dogs are called man’s best friends. A good friend is faithful, will be there to pick you up when you’re down, will keep you on track to reach your goals, and will just be there for you as company. 36 The mental, physical and social benefits of caring for a dog — or any other pet, for that matter — are in large numbers. Here are all the reasons your life will improve with a dog: Owning a dog keeps you active. 37 As a result, dog owners are often inspired toward an active lifestyle to satisfy their dog’s needs. Research conducted by the American Heart Association showed that dog owners were 54 percent more likely to get the recommended amount of exercise than non-dog owners. 38 Owning a dog has many heart-healthy benefits, such as a decrease in blood pressure, decreasing the risk of heart disease. One study showed that non-dog owners who had survived a heart attack were more likely to die within a year than dog owners. You will feel calmer if you own a dog. Dogs provide a calming and familiar presence. 39 One study showed that Alzheimer’s patients who owned dogs had fewer anxiety-induced exacerbations (加重) than Alzheimer’s patients without dogs. Dog owners can promote their communication with others. Dogs provide a natural connection with other people and are great conversation starters. Common questions and comments from dog lovers and owners include: “What breed (品种) are they?”, “How long have you had them?” and “They’re so cute!” 40 A.Keeping a dog makes you live longer. B.That decreases stress and anxiety levels. C.Owning a dog provides safety and peace of mind. D.And that’s exactly what a dog can do for its owner. E.Dogs are naturally energetic and love to play and exercise. F.These conversation starters lead to an immediate social connection. G.This is because a dog fully relies on its owner for attention, meals and cleanliness. Australian couple Greg Denaro and Dany bought a bulldog for their peaceful lifestyle. A gentle breeze carried the sweet scent of blooming roses from a nearby flower bed, making the air feel fresh and pleasant. Children’s laughter echoed in the distance as they chased each other around the playground, and an old man sat on a wooden bench, feeding pigeons with a bag of breadcrumbs. Lily was strolling along the path, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere, when something caught her eye. Under a tall oak tree at the edge of the park, there was a small dog lying curled up on the grass. It was a scruffy little thing, with matted fur that was a mix of brown and white. Its ribs were clearly visible beneath its thin coat, and its eyes looked dull and tired, as if it hadn’t had a good night’s sleep in days. Lily’s heart went out to the poor creature. She slowed down and approached it cautiously, not wanting to scare it. As she got closer, she could see that the dog was shivering slightly, even though the afternoon was warm. It lifted its head weakly when it heard her footsteps, but didn’t have the energy to stand up. Lily knelt down beside it and softly said, ‌“Hey, little guy, are you okay?” The dog just looked at her with a sad expression, as if pleading for help. Lily felt a surge of compassion. She couldn’t just leave the poor dog there to suffer. She thought about the snacks she had in her bag, but they were all human food that probably wasn’t good for the dog. So she made up her mind to go and buy some proper dog food. She stood up and looked around. There was a convenience store just a few blocks away from the park. Lily hurried there, bought a bag of dog food and a bottle of water, then rushed back. The dog was still lying where she had left it, its eyes following her movements. She took a deep breath, as if mustering up the courage, knelt down again, opened the dog food, and gently placed some in front of it. The dog hesitated for a moment, then slowly stood up on its wobbly legs. It sniffed the food cautiously before starting to eat hungrily. Lily stroked its matted fur softly, and the dog looked up at her with gratitude. After finishing the food, it nuzzled her hand gently, as if showing its affection. Lily decided to take it home and look for its owner. She named it Lucky, hoping it would have a better life from now on. Can I borrow your dictionary? Here's their business card. thanks. One of the things I dislike about hotels is that everyone expects tips. I know at the highland hotel, they have an interesting policy. When you check out, you put some money in a special box at reception each evening. The money in the box is shared equally by the hotel staff. Listen to the next question. C.Discounts. 18.What does the speaker say about apple sticks dipped in butter? A.They are healthy snacks. B.They are fast food. C.They make children fat easily. 19.What is the most important thing in getting children to exercise? A.Teaching them to have a strong will. B.Forcing them to exercise every day. C.Making exercise fun for them. 20.How many suggestions does the speaker offer? A.3. B.2. C.4. 【答案】17.B 18.A 19.C 20.A 【原文】 W: Good afternoon childhood obesity has been receiving increasing attention in recent years. It’s no big secret that children like sweets, snacks and fast food. Fast food restaurants make fatty meals even more popular by including toys. However, there are healthy foods that children can enjoy just as much as other choices. Apple sticks dipped in butter are a delicious choice for midday snacks. Following the suggestions in the food pyramid is an easy way to make sure that a child has all of the nutrition he or she needs. My second suggestion is exercise. Going for a bike ride, taking a walk around the neighborhood or running around the playground are all fun ways for children to get out and get moving. Fitness for kids is very different to fitness for adults. While adults often have a strong will to force themselves to exercise, kids usually would much rather sit in front of the television and watch their favorite cartoons. It is important to make things fun, to get a child’s attention and cultivate their interest. Finally, it is extremely important for overweight children to stick to a healthy lifestyle. Eating healthy foods and making fitness for kids a fun experience can help get children on the right track to a healthier lifestyle. A As a student or teacher, you can subscribe (订阅) to all the magazines, taking advantage of the low rates with savings of up to 29% available to students, teachers and schools. A.Dive into Adulthood B.Legends of Penguins C.Scenery in Antarctica D.Adventures in Antarctica 【答案】24.D 25.B 26.C 27.A 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。 根据第一段中“Fledging is when birds grow feathers that help them fly or, in the case of penguins, swim. Mom and Dad have headed out to sea for good, and the five-month-old chicks are realizing their parents aren’t coming back: They must hunt for themselves.(长羽是鸟类长出有助于它们飞翔的羽毛,对于企鹅来说,就是有助于它们游泳的羽毛。爸爸妈妈已经永远地出海了,五个月大的企鹅宝宝意识到它们的父母不会回来了:它们必须自己捕猎)”可知,对于企鹅来说,长羽意味着它们将独立生活。故选D。 25.推理判断题。根据第二段中“I watch in fear, afraid the bird won’t resurface in the water after the long fall. But then it makes it, back up!(我惊恐地看着,担心这只鸟在长时间坠落后不会再次浮出水面。但后来它成功了,又浮了上来!)”可知,作者对于在悬崖边上的小企鹅是担心的。故选B。 26.词句猜测题。根据第二段中“Finally one chick steps in front of the others, waddles to the edge of the cliff and dives off the side.(最后,一只雏鸟走到其他雏鸟前面,摇摇摆摆地走到悬崖边,从侧面跳入水中)”及第三段中“At first the other penguins are like “Oh my gosh, what did Steve just do?” But then they realize it’s safe to jump.(一开始,其他企鹅会说:“哦,我的天哪,Steve刚刚做了什么?”但随后它们意识到跳下去是安全的)”可知,“Steve”指的是第一只跳水的企鹅。故选C。 27.主旨大意题。根据最后一段中“This dive is their entrance into adulthood. They’ll swim out to sea and won’t return to the home for several years. How lucky we are to see this huge moment in their lives.(这次跳水是它们进入成年的标志。它们将游向大海,几年内不会回家。我们很幸运能看到它们生命中的这个重要时刻)”可知,文章主要讲述的是作者在南极洲观察帝企鹅幼鸟第一次跳入海洋游泳的情景,展现了企鹅成长过程中的一个重要时刻。所以A项“Dive into Adulthood(跃入成年)”作为标题最合适。故选A。 C Jammed roads, loud noises, suffocating (令人窒息的) smog. A.Promising B.Common C.Critical D.Meaningless 【答案】28.B 29.C 30.A 31.A 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 根据第二段中的““Individuals that can’t deal with constant disturbance, such as noise, people, cars, etc., would be unlikely to thrive in an urban habitat,” says Jeremy Hyman, a professor and department chair of biology at Western Carolina University. (“那些无法应对持续干扰(如噪音、人群、车辆等)的生物个体,不太可能在城市栖息地中茁壮成长。”西卡罗来纳大学生物学系主任、教授杰里米·海曼说道。)”可知,城市鸟类更具攻击性是因为它们要应对城市中的各种干扰,即被城市的干扰所烦扰。故选B项。 29.推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Some birds may become more aggressive because cities are rich in food sources — and so there’s strong competition to establish a foothold.(一些鸟类可能会变得更具攻击性,因为城市有丰富的食物来源,因此建立立足点存在激烈的竞争。)”以及第四段中的“But food scarcity may also make some urban species more aggressive, and so birds have to fight an awful lot in order to maintain a large enough territory to get the resources that they need.(但食物短缺也可能使一些城市物种更具攻击性,因此鸟类必须进行大量的争斗,以维持足够大的领地来获取它们所需的资源。)” 根据第五段中的““Aggression definitely has a genetic component to it,” says Foltz. (“攻击性肯定有其遗传因素。”福尔茨说。)”以及“But also, we know that when we change environmental factors, birds change their aggression.(但我们也知道,当我们改变环境因素时,鸟类的攻击性也会改变。)” 故选A项。 31. 根据第五段中的“In some cases, aggression seems to be “a worthwhile cost,” says Sarah Foltz, a behavioral ecologist at Radford University. (“在某些情况下,攻击性似乎是‘一种值得付出的代价’。”拉德福德大学的行为生态学家萨拉·福尔茨说道。)”以及最后一段中的““We’ve got all these little pieces,” she says, “But it’s still coming to gather to make a bigger picture, so it’s sort of an unfinished puzzle.”(“我们已经掌握了所有这些零碎的信息,”她说,“但要把它们整合起来形成一个更完整的图景,目前还像是一幅尚未完成的拼图。”)” 故选A项。 D For years, illegal hunters hunted lions without mercy along the border between Chad and Cameroon in north-central Africa. 根据第一段中的“They killed so many of the animals that wildlife conservationists consider lions to be extinct in the region. (他们捕杀了如此多的狮子,以至于野生动物保护主义者认为该地区的狮子已经灭绝。)”可知,乍得和喀麦隆边境的狮子曾被认为已经灭绝。故选B项。 33.细节理解题。根据第二段中的“In February a remote camera shot a photograph of a beautiful grown-up female lion that was clearly in great health (2月,一台远程摄像机拍摄到了一只美丽的成年母狮,显然它非常健康)”可知,相机拍到的是一只健康的成年母狮。故选A项。 34. 根据最后一段中的“The new photo has given wildlife officials a renewed sense of optimism about the future of lions in West and Central Africa (这张新照片让野生动物官员们对西非和中非狮子的未来重新燃起了乐观情绪)”可知,这一地区狮子的未来是充满希望的。故选B项。 35. 根据最后一段中的“Lions that inhabit this region are genetically (基因方面地) different from other groups, so their reappearance is especially valuable (生活在这个地区的狮子在基因上与其他群体不同,所以它们的重新出现尤其有价值)”可知,西非和中非狮子重新出现很有价值是因为它们在基因上是独特的群体。 Benefits of Owning a Dog There’s a reason why dogs are called man’s best friends. 36.根据上文“There’s a reason why dogs are called man’s best friends. A good friend is faithful, will be there to pick you up when you’re down, will keep you on track to reach your goals, and will just be there for you as company. (狗被称为人类最好的朋友是有原因的。好朋友是忠诚的,会在你情绪低落时鼓励你,会帮助你坚持实现目标,并且会一直陪伴在你身边。)” 以及下文“The mental, physical and social benefits of caring for a dog — or any other pet, for that matter — are in large numbers. (照顾一只狗——或者任何其他宠物——所带来的心理、生理和社会益处是众多的。)” 可知,上文作者将狗比作人类最好的朋友,并列举了好朋友的特质。本空位于该比喻之后,应承接这一比喻,说明狗正是能提供这些支持的朋友。D选项“And that’s exactly what a dog can do for its owner. (这正是狗狗能为它的主人所做的。)”完美承接上文对“好朋友”的描述,引出下文关于养狗好处的具体论述,实现了自然过渡,符合题意。故选D。 37.根据上文“Owning a dog keeps you active. (养狗能让你保持活力。)”可知,本段讨论养狗能促进主人保持活跃。本空位于该主题句之后,应解释其原因。E选项“Dogs are naturally energetic and love to play and exercise. (狗天生精力充沛,喜欢玩耍和运动。)”解释了为什么养狗能让人活跃——因为狗自身需要运动,从而促使主人也动起来。并且该选项与下文“dog owners are often inspired toward an active lifestyle to satisfy their dog’s needs”逻辑一致。故选E。 38.根据下文“Owning a dog has many heart-healthy benefits, such as a decrease in blood pressure, decreasing the risk of heart disease. (养狗对心脏健康有很多益处,比如降低血压,减少患心脏病的风险。)”可知,本段讨论养狗对心脏健康的益处。空处需作为本段总起句,概括养狗与心脏健康的关系,A选项“Keeping a dog makes you live longer. (养狗能让你活得更久。)”是对本段内容的概括,因为降低心脏病风险、降低血压等益处最终可能延长寿命,且A选项中“makes you live longer”与下文“One study showed that non-dog owners who had survived a heart attack were more likely to die within a year than dog owners.” 故选A。 39.本段主题为“养狗让人更平静”,根据上文“Dogs provide a calming and familiar presence. 40.本段主题是“养狗能促进与他人的交流”,根据上文“Dogs provide a natural connection with other people and are great conversation starters. (狗狗能与其他人建立天然的联系,是开启对话的绝佳话题。)”可知,提到狗是聊天的开端,并列举了常见话题。空白处需说明这些话题的作用,F选项“These conversation starters lead to an immediate social connection. (这些开场白能迅速建立起社交联系。)”中的“these conversation starters”指代上文提到的关于狗的常见问题和评论,呼应了“促进交流”的主题,并解释了狗如何帮助主人与他人产生互动。故选F。 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节 (共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Australian couple Greg Denaro and Dany bought a bulldog for their peaceful lifestyle. They called him Giotto. But what they got was something never quiet—an endlessly 41 dog who taught himself to skateboard. It’s a 42 his owners never expected. It all started on his first walk as a puppy, six years ago, when Giotto 43 some kids skated past him. He was 44 and was pulling a skateboard with a strength beyond his size. While Greg Denaro first thought Giotto simply 45 the sound of the skateboard, they soon discovered that his excited reaction 46 meant the opposite. One of the young boys pushed his 47 towards Giotto. He jumped on it right away and tried to stand on it. It was obvious that this was something that really 48 him. From then on, he would follow anyone riding by, trying to 49 away their skateboards. Just for fun, the couple bought their dog a skateboard. Giotto couldn’t 50 to jump on it, bite it, and push it, though not riding the board. The situation 51 three years later when his owners handmade a purpose-built board for him. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The dog hesitated for a moment, then slowly stood up on its wobbly legs. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 She stood up and looked around. 词汇激活: 行为类: ①放置:place/put ②抚摸:stroke/pat ③寻找:look for/search for/hunt for 情绪类: ①感激:gratitude/appreciation ②渴望:hope/wish 【点睛】[高分句型1] The dog was still lying where she had left it, its eyes following her movements.(运用了where引导地点状语从句和独立主格结构) [高分句型2] She named it Lucky, hoping it would have a better life from now on.(运用了现在分词短语作伴随状语和省略连词that的宾语从句) 原创精品资源学科网独家享有版权,侵权必究!1 学科网(北京)股份有限公司1 / 23 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
