Adding to the achievements of a remarkable year, Taylor Swift has been named Time magazine's Person of the Year for 2023.
Already a superstar before 2023, Swift's career has reached new heights thanks to the beginning of her Eras Tour that brought her 3. 5-hour performance to 66 shows in 23 cities across North America, Argentina and Brazil. Promoted by her tour, Swift has been named the most-streamed female artist in the history of Spotify and Apple Music. According to Billboard, the tour made about$900 million (about 6. 4 billion yuan) in 2023. In addition, the tour's movie Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour became the biggest concert movie of all time, taking more than $250 million globally.
As she was declared (宣布) a billionaire by Bloomberg in November, a hidden “Taylor Swift economy” also promoted sales for business owners across the U. S. From soaps to a cruise inspired by her different “eras”, interest in Swift-related products went way up.
Apart from her financial contributions, Swift made a significant cultural impact by taking back control of her music. In 2019, her old record label, Big Machine, sold the master tapes of her first six albums (专辑) to Scooter Braun. The sale meant that she didn't have the rights to the albums. In response to this, Swift began re-recording her first six albums, tagging (加标签于) them “Taylor's Version”. This move stressed her belief that artists deserve to own their work. “It's all in how you deal with loss,” she told Time. “I respond to extreme pain by resisting.”
Heading into 2024, Swift will start the Eras Tour again in Japan and Australia. As USA Today noted, “Her current top has been a long time coming, but it may also be just beginning.”
4. What do we know about Taylor Swift?
A. She broke a new record on her tour. B. She toured South America before 2023.
C. Her achievements received great recognition. D. Her performance began with the Apple Music.
5. How did Taylor Swift benefit from her Eras Tour?
A. She proved herself to be an artist. B. She learned to make some products.
C. She got rich and regained album rights. D. She sold her master tapes to a company.
6. What can we learn about Taylor Swift from the last paragraph?
A. She will end her music career. B. She will continue her Eras Tour.
C. She will reach her top in Japan. D. She will make a record in Australia.
7. What is the author's attitude towards Taylor Swift?
A Admirable. B. Uncaring. C. Doubtful. D. Critical.

Middle school student Joaquin invented a car seat alarm system to remind parents that their child is in the backseat. He did so after reading a shocking story of a father whose baby died of heat stroke after accidentally being left in a hot car. Joaquin felt something had to be done to prevent this. The following is what he told a reporter.
A closed car increased the surrounding temperature, leading to a sharper increase in temperature when parked in the sun and children overheat several times faster than adults. Of the 360 deaths caused by heat stroke in cars in America in the last decade, most were caused when a child was forgotten inside a car.
This was why I designed an alarm to warn drivers of the case. To detect when a baby was in a car seat, I tried working with a weight sensor, but it produced too many false signs. After more research, I used a magnetic sensor, which could be activated when the seat belt was closed. If a driver locked the car with the baby in, the car alarm system would start sounding, and the car would not lock.
I have participated in several science fair competitions. STEM is the main source of knowledge for every field in the world and it needn’t be a complicated subject at school. This is what first interested me, which changed the way I saw the world.
Broadcom MASTERS has encouraged me to pursue STEM. When I was presenting my project at Texas Science Fair 2017, the judges came by and I felt I failed. Then I saw four families crowding around my board — I was shocked. They wanted me to present my project to them because they knew about it from the news. They asked me to talk to their kids to inspire them.
My advice is: Work hard, and do what you enjoy. Instead of always watching TV, think how you can create something you’re interested in.
8. What led to Joaquin inventing a car seat alarm system?
A. A baby’s death in a car. B. Many children being left in cars.
C. The 360 deaths by heat stroke in cars. D. Parents’ failure to look after their children.
9. What is the advantage of a magnetic sensor?
A. It is easier to operate. B. It is activated more easily.
C. It can give warns correctly. D. It can sound to warn parents.
10. What can be inferred about Joaquin?
A. He began to pursue STEM last year. B. He was interested in science at school.
C. He won several awards at science fairs. D. He found science complicated at school.
11. Why did four families take their kids to Joaquin’s project?
A. To reduce their kids’ TV time. B. To get an award from Joaquin.
C. To get encouragement from Joaquin. D. To ask Joaquin to teach their kids.
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. B 11. C

A She broke a new record on her tour. B. She toured South America before 2023.
C Her achievements received great recognition. D. Her performance began with the Apple Music.
5 How did Taylor Swift benefit from her Eras Tour?
A. Admirable. B. Uncaring. C. Doubtful. D. Critical.
C
