Four children survived by themselves in the Amazon rainforest in Colombia for 40 days after a small airplane crashed there on May 1, 2023. They were finally saved after living over a month in the jungle. The news of their safety brought joy to the whole country. Students in the Netherlands made a strong car called Stella Terra. It runs on solar power. This is the first solar-powered car that can travel long distances off-road without needing to stop to recharge. 16. When did Liam Garner start out on his adventure? A. In August 2021. B. In August 2022. C. In January 2023. D. In January 2024. 17. The children who survived showed that _________. A. they must know important life skills B. it’s not hard to live in a jungle C. nobody cares about them D. small airplanes are not safe 18. What is special about Stella Terra? A. It can go off-road in the Netherlands. B. It is the first off-road car in the world. C. It can recharge itself without stopping. D. It won’t stop after it starts working. A 17. A 18. 根据“After 17 months, he successfully finished his journey in early January 2023.” 故选A。 根据“Four children survived by themselves in the Amazon rainforest in Colombia for 40 days after a small airplane crashed there on May 1, 2023.” 故选A。 根据“Students in the Netherlands made a strong car called Stella Terra.…This is the first solar-powered car that can travel long distances off-road without needing to stop to recharge.” C。 B Asking for directions is the first thing we do when we arrive in a new place or even when we are just trying to find a place. Knowing how to ask for them can make our life much easier! Use greetings and polite expressions. Starting the conversation with a greeting is necessary. If you want to get a nice answer, begin by saying “hello” first. And some words like “may”, “can” and “could” will help you express yourself better. Build your words. You should know the basic words when asking for directions. It may be useful to remember some famous places. Then try to use the right words when asking for a direction. Get to know the transportation. Sometimes, it can happen that you are still far from your place. Which kind of public transportation should you choose? You might ask like this, “Is it far? Do I need to take the bus or the subway there?” Don’t be afraid of using symbols. Every city in the world has its own symbols. You can decrease search time if you know what the most important symbols are in the city. Your place might be around the symbols. Don’t be too shy to ask. Learn to relax if you get lost somewhere. We all do that now and then, especially when visiting a new city. But always make sure you can ask others for help! 19. Which of the following expressions may NOT help you when asking for directions? A. “May I ask ...” B. “Can I know ...” C. “Could you please ...” D. “Tell me ...” 20. What does the underlined word “decrease” mean? A. Increase. B. Shorten. C. Waste. D. Use. 21. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? A. It’s necessary to express yourself better when asking for a direction. B. Knowing some famous places is useful when asking for a direction. C. Sometimes you have to use the public transportation in a new city. D. Most people seldom get lost when they are visiting a new city. 22. What’s the best title for the passage? A. How to ask for directions B. Why we should ask for directions C. When to ask for directions D. The importance of asking for directions 【答案】19. D 20. B 21. D 22. 根据文章第二段“If you want to get a nice answer, begin by saying ‘hello’ first. And some words like ‘may’, ‘can’ and ‘could’ will help you express yourself better.”可知,使用“May I ask...”、“Can I know...”和“Could you please...” 根据文章第四段“You can decrease search time if you know what the most important symbols are in the city. Your place might be around the symbols.” 根据文章最后一段“Learn to relax if you get lost somewhere. We all do that now and then, especially when visiting a new city.” 根据文章第一段“Asking for directions is the first thing we do when we arrive in a new place or even when we are just trying to find a place. Knowing how to ask for them can make our life much easier!” A。 C As we know, the attraction of most movies lies in the scene changes. But if a movie had only one scene from beginning to end, would you still be interested? My answer was “no”—until I watched the American movie 12 Angry Men (《十二怒汉》). Twelve men from different backgrounds are invited to sit on a jury(陪审团). They are asked to discuss the case of an 18-year-old boy who has allegedly (被指控) killed his father. If they decide the boy is guilty (有罪的), he will be sent to the electric chair. In the first vote, all the jurors vote “guilty” except Juror (陪审员) 8. He wants to give the boy a chance and raises some reasonable doubts about the witnesses’ statements, the murder weapon (凶器) and the boy’s motivation (动机). This makes some of the jurors angry. They think Juror 8 is wasting time. But some jurors begin to think more carefully about his words. They look at the case from different angles (角度) based on their own experiences, and they slowly find mistakes in the witnesses’ stories. In the end, all the jurors are convinced (确信的) that the boy is not guilty. Why has this movie become a classic? I think it’s because it shows the power of an individual (个人). In 12 Angry Men, 11 jurors voted “guilty”. But in the end, they change their minds and agree with the one person who said something different. Sometimes we are alone when we push forward and take risks. But if we have enough faith in ourselves, we can succeed and bring others to our side. Also, we should always pay attention to details, anytime and anywhere, because details reveal the truth. At first, the case in 12 Angry Men seemed perfect. However, as they looked more closely, they found something was wrong. 23. Why doesn’t Juror 8 vote “guilty” ? A. He believes that the boy is not guilty. B. He wants to give the boy a chance. C. He is interested in the boy’s motivation. D. He knows the truth behind the murder. 24. Why has 12 Angry Men become a classic in the writer’s opinion? A. It uses a special filming style. B. It is about a special topic. C. It shows the power of an individual. D. It teaches people to be honest. 25. According to the author, what should we learn from the story? A. A movie can’t be great if it has only one scene. B. People who are accused should be given a chance to explain. C. If we have enough faith in ourselves, we can succeed. D. Details tell the truth, so we should always believe them. 26. Where in a newspaper would you most likely find this article? A. Story land. B. Science study. C. Fashion show. D. Film review. B 24. C 25. C 26. 根据“In the first vote, all the jurors vote ‘guilty’ except Juror 8. He wants to give the boy a chance”可知8号陪审员没有投 “有罪” 是想给男孩一个机会,故选B。 根据“Why has this movie become a classic? I think it’s because it shows the power of an individual”可知作者认为这部影片之所以成为经典,是因为它展示了个人的力量,故选C。 根据“But if we have enough faith in ourselves, we can succeed and bring others to our side.” D。 D On May 18, 2024, thousands of people gathered in the center of McMinnville, Oregon for the McMenamins UFO Festival celebration. At the celebration, people of all ages lined the streets to watch the colorful floats, marching bands and alien (外星人) costumes (服装). The smells of the sushi and Funnel Cake mixed with those from hot donuts and foot-long corndogs. The two-day event also included costume contests, fun runs, and an alien costume party and so on. The festival takes place about 40 miles southwest of Portland because of a reported UFO sighting in the area. In 1950, Evelyn and Paul Trent said they spotted (看见) the mysterious, disc shaped object in the sky outside McMinnville. Paul took two photos of the object. To this day, UFO lovers still talk about whether the sighting was real or not. McMenamins, a family-owned chain of hotels in Oregon, began hosting the UFO Festival in 2000. “It was the 50th anniversary (周年纪念日) of the sighting, so they decided to make an event out of it,” said Renee Rank. The first gathering at the Hotel Oregon in McMinnville was such a success that the UFO Festival has taken place every year since. What did the festival-goers think of aliens and UFOs? Meghan O’Loughlin of Newberg, Oregon, said, “If there is life on the earth, there’s something else alive somewhere in our galaxy (银河系).” Sandra Hughes of McMinnville said that she didn’t really believe in aliens. What could festival-goers do at the McMenamins UFO Festival celebration? ① Enjoy fun runs. ② Have a taste of delicious food. ③ Take photos with aliens. ④ Have an alien costume party. A. aliens might be somewhere in the galaxy B. there were aliens on the earth C. many aliens lived with us D. aliens were very interesting 30. What’s the main idea of the last paragraph? A. The festival-goers have different opinions about aliens. B. McMenamins holds the UFO Festival every year. C. The first UFO Festival was a great success. D. People in McMinnville have many activities on May 18. 27. B 28. C 29. A 30. The smells of the sushi and Funnel Cake mixed with those from hot donuts and foot-long corndogs. The two-day event also included costume contests, fun runs, and an alien costume party and so on.” 根据第三段内容“McMenamins, a family-owned chain of hotels in Oregon, began hosting the UFO Festival in 2000. ‘It was the 50th anniversary (周年纪念日) of the sighting, so they decided to make an event out of it,’ said Renee Rank. The first gathering at the Hotel Oregon in McMinnville was such a success that the UFO Festival has taken place every year since.” 根据最后一段中“Meghan O’Loughlin of Newberg, Oregon, said, ‘If there is life on the earth, there’s something else alive somewhere in our galaxy (银河系).’” 故选A。 根据最后一段内容“What did the festival-goers think of aliens and UFOs? B Asking for directions is the first thing we do when we arrive in a new place or even when we are just trying to find a place. Most people seldom get lost when they are visiting a new city. 22. What’s the best title for the passage? A. How to ask for directions B. Why we should ask for directions C. When to ask for directions D. The importance of asking for directions C As we know, the attraction of most movies lies in the scene changes. D On May 18, 2024, thousands of people gathered in the center of McMinnville, Oregon for the McMenamins UFO Festival celebration. But she added that she kept an open mind. “I’m not sure, but whether it is real or not, it is really amazing.” 27. What could festival-goers do at the McMenamins UFO Festival celebration? ① Enjoy fun runs. ② Have a taste of delicious food. ③ Take photos with aliens. ④ Have an alien costume party.
