Passage 2 I recently read about a girl named Hope Elizbeth Stout. After learning more about her life, I got the feeling that she had been named “Hope” for a good reason. Something of her life has lived on. In June 2003, Stout was very much like any other 12-year-old girl. She was looking forward to her family’s annual beach trip. But a sudden pain in her knee changed everything. After conducting some tests, doctors found that she had bone cancer. Stout began to receive painful treatments. She never lost hope and believed that in the end, she would be able to beat cancer. Unfortunately, the treatments did little to stop the disease from spreading. By November, she was forced to use a wheelchair to get around. Then, something magical happened. It changed many lives. In the United States, there is a Make-A-Wish (MAW) foundation. It helps children in need fulfill their wishes. In November 2003, MAW visited Stout and told the girl she could have anything she wanted. Stout thought for a few minutes and then answered, “I am still lucky. I have been to Disney World and swum with dolphins in Mexico. I went to the beach all the time. Did you just say there are 155 kids on your waiting list? Well, my wish is to let their wishes be fulfilled—all 155 of them” It was hard for MAW to fulfill Stout’s wish—it would cost nearly $750,000. However, it sprang into action. Newspapers, radio and TV stations shared the story. A local company got the ball rolling with a $25,000 donation. Sadly, Stout didn’t live to see the happy ending of this story. After her death, donations poured into the MAW office even faster. On January 16, MAW announced that they had raised $1,116,000—enough to fulfill all 155 wishes. Finally, Stout’s wish came true. 1.According to the article, what does the Make-A-Wish foundation do? Passage 4 Alice, an American designer, now lives with her husband in their apartment on Changning Road, Shanghai. They moved into the apartment on the first day of 2023. “Although it is not very large, it’s quite convenient to live here. Nearby are gyms, restaurants, supermarkets and more.” Alice says. Moving into the 35-square-meter apartment marks the couple’s choice for a more minimalist (极简的) lifestyle. They have to choose each piece of furniture carefully to make sure it doesn’t take up too much space. The living working area, fitting into 16 square meters, requires every object to be functional (实用的). Alice is good at turning unused products into useful ones. “Protecting the environment is an important value. If I need a piece of furniture, I first consider searching in secondhand stores. Whether it’s a gift, a coat or anything else, I prefer things with a story to new ones.” she says. For example, the working table in front of the open kitchen used to be an old door, Alice found it in a place filled with old things that were collected from around China. She adjusted the height of the table to make it fit for standing working. “People would be surprised at how many old furniture pieces I collected. I fix them, repair them and give them a new life in my own way.” she says. For Alice, home is a place where she can feel safe and comfortable. Do they make you feel stressed? Recently, a mother’s special idea about her kids’ playtime has caught people’s attention online. Jessi Meeks says every day, her three kids get an hour where they get to do “whatever” they want. She calls it “whatever-makes-you happy hour” . Meeks’ idea came naturally from one of her kids’ suggestions. “One afternoon, the kids were outside painting and my husband and I were trying to talk and carry on a conversation. My oldest son Cannon looked at me and asked, ‘Can I paint my hands?’ And I said, ‘Whatever makes you happy. You all just do it and be quiet so Mommy and Daddy can talk to each other.’ ” Meeks recalls. “And from then on, around that same time of the day, they would ask if they could do something and we’d be like ‘Sure, whatever makes you happy.’ ” But Meeks also sets necessary boundaries (界限). “If they start hurting themselves or hurting each other, we step in.” she adds, “And we don’t let them watch TV. ” Meeks believes the hour of free playtime has been beneficial for her kids. If they make a big mess, she thinks it’s a good chance to teach little ones the practice of tidying up. At the same time, it’s also a great way to allow time for them to explore and play the way they want. “Even though the kids make a mess at times, it has worked out well for everyone in my family.” Meeks says. Many people call this plant a tree, but it is a kind of grass. Like other kinds of grass, a bamboo plant may be cut very low to the ground, but it will grow back very quickly. A Japanese reported one bamboo plant. It grew 1.5 metres in 24 hours! Bamboo grows almost everywhere in the world except Europe. There are over 1,000 kinds of bamboo. Not all bamboo looks the same. Some bamboo plants are very thin. They may only grow to be a few centimeters (厘米) wide while others may grow more than 30 centimetres across. This plant also comes in different colours, from yellow to black to green. Bamboo has been used to (被用于) make many things such as hats and kitchen tools (用具). Because it is strong, bamboo is also used to build buildings. Many Asian countries have used bamboo for hundreds of years. They often use bamboo for buildings and supporting new buildings and bridges. In Africa, poor farmers used bamboo to find water. These African countries need cheap way to find water because they have no money, and their fields often die from no rain and no water. Bamboo pipes (管子) help poor farmers bring water to their thirsty fields without spending a lot of money. 1.Bamboo is a kind of ________. Since the early 1900s, visitors to Racetrack Playa (赛马场盐湖), a dry lake bed in California have wondered how the rocks can move on their own. These rocks leave long tracks (轨迹) behind them. The long tracks show that the rocks have moved along the ground. Those rocks only move at night and only move once every year or two. And they don’t move at the same time or in the same direction. But how do they move? How can a 350-kilogram rock move? Now scientists have known the key to the question! Here’s how it happens. Death Valley is one of the hottest places in the world, but it is cold at night. When it rains, the hard ground becomes soft and wet. When it gets cold enough, the water on the ground will change into very thin ice. Then the strong wind can move flat (平的) rocks along the flat ground. In the morning, the sun comes up and dries the ground. Moving rocks can be found at other places in the world as well, but Death Valley is the most famous. 1.Why did visitors go to Death Valley? A.To see the dry lake. B.To see the scenery of Death Valley. C.To climb mountains around Death valley. D.To know the secret of the moving rocks. 2.What do the rocks leave behind them? D.The visitors. 5.What’s the best title for this passage? A.Dry Lake Bed B.Soft and Wet Ground C.Tracks of Rocks D.Moving Rocks in Death Valley Passage 5 ①Since the first man looked up at the flying birds, countless successes have been achieved on the way up to the sky. From the stones thrown into the air to airships of all kinds, pioneers of humans never failed to let their imagination run wild. ②Stories of pioneers go back to centuries ago. ③Kite flying in China dates back to the 5th century BC and is thought to be the earliest example of man-made flight. ④From the 3rd century BC, the sky lantern was known in China. Many people believe that it was invented by Zhuge Kongming. Some say he wrote a message on a sky lantern for help, while others believe sky lanterns were used to drive the enemies away. ⑤Whichever is true, humans have never stopped, and they will never. In modern times, new fields are being explored. ⑥In 1993, the world’s largest hot-air airship was built. The AS-300 carried an underslung raft. It allowed a team of French scientists to carry out their treetop researches without too much harm to the rainforest. ⑦On May 15, 2022, Chinese scientists launched the latest model of “Jimu No.1”, China’s self-developed airship, to collect weather information on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. ⑧The airship would work at a world-record altitude of 9,032 meters. It was the first time an airship of its size had reached this height, even higher than that of the 8848.86-meter-high Mount Qomolangma, the highest mountain in the world. 1.According to passage, we can learn that ________. A.Zhuge Kongming was believed to invent kites B.sky lanterns were used just for fun in China C.kite flying in China dates back to the 5th century BC D.sky lanterns were known in China before the 3rd century BC 2.Both the AS-300 and the latest model of “Jimu No.1” are airships which ________. A.were harmful to the forest B.broke a world record each C.reached the highest mountain D.helped with treetop researches 3.The writer’s main purpose of writing the passage is to ________. A.share humorous stories about the pioneers B.show how excellent ancient people were C.encourage us to learn more about imagination D.praise the never-ending exploration into the sky 4.Where do you think this passage may come from? A.A travel guide. B.A science magazine. C.A storybook. D.A sports website. 5.The structure of the passage is ________. A. B. C. D. Passage 6 Smartphones are getting boring. The new models are either a bit faster or have better cameras, but they are basically no different from the ones already in our pockets. This is why scientists are hoping, and working for something new, something that will change our lives just as greatly as smartphones do. At the moment, the next invention might be smart glasses.   Just imagine. Instead of having to pick up your phone and look at the screen, all of the information you need simply appears just in front of you, in your glasses. Satellite navigation (导航) directions would appear right there on the road. And your smart glasses could guide you to the right shelf in the supermarket! Smart glasses could also be used in industry. They could show engineers the instructions they need to fix things more quickly. A doctor could carry out a difficult operation, guided in real time by someone on the other side of the world. This may sound impossible. But most of the technologies to invent them are already there. For example, one key technology is called AR, which can make digital 3D objects appear as if they are part of the real world. We’ve used it a lot on our video calls. Similarly, huge progress has been made in spatial audio. This is when a sound is made to give it a sense of place, like what you hear in an empty room. Some high-end earphones can already do that. Future glasses will of course need to recognize (识别) your voice to do tasks. This technology has been widely used in our daily life. So, why aren’t we all wearing smart glasses yet? So far, no one has invented a good way to send images (映像) of our world onto glasses. However, with the rapid development of technology, smart glasses could arrive much sooner than we think. 1.Why does the writer mention smartphones in Paragraph 1? A.To start a story. B.To explain an idea. C.To introduce a topic. D.To discuss a problem. 2.What are Paragraphs 2 and 3 mainly about? A.When smart glasses might be made. B.Where smart glasses could be used. C.How smart glasses would give directions. D.Why smart glasses should be changed. 3.Which of the following technologies needs to be improved to invent smart glasses? A.Making spatial audio. B.Recognizing voices. C.Creating digital 3D objects. D.Sending images onto glasses. 4.How might the writer feel about the future of smart glasses? A.Bored. B.Confident. C.Satisfied. D.Uncertain. Passage 7 Does the Dead Sea (死海) sound like a place where you’d like to go swimming? What do you expect to see in it? Do you believe there are dead things in the Dead Sea? Lying in southwest Asia, the Dead Sea is about 80 kilometres long, about 18 kilometres wide and about 400 metres deep. It also has some other names, such as the Salt Sea, the East Sea, or the Sea of the Plain. Even though it’s called the Dead Sea, it isn’t a sea at all! It’s a lake. Different from other lakes you might have seen, the Dead Sea is a quite salty lake. In fact, the Dead Sea is one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world. The Dead Sea is so salty that nothing can live in it. That’s why it’s called the Dead Sea. And the Dead Sea stays quite salty because it gets only a little rain, and so little fresh water gets into the Dead Sea each year. Don’t let the name of the Dead Sea make you feel scared. The Dead Sea is a surprising place to visit, and many people go to the Dead Sea each year on holiday. One interesting thing is that anyone can float (漂浮) in the Dead Sea. So if you walk on the beach of the Dead Sea on a warm day, perhaps you can see many people floating in its waters. You might even see many of them reading books or magazines! 1.How does the writer start the passage? A.By telling a story. B.By listing numbers. C.By giving examples. D.By asking questions. 2.What can we learn about the Dead Sea in Paragraph 2? ①Its size.    ②Its history.    ③Its place.    ④Its importance. A.①② B.①③ C.②④ D.③④ 3.What’s Paragraph 3 mainly about? A.The Dead Sea is a salty lake. B.The Dead Sea has a strange name. C.Almost no rain or fresh water enters the Dead Sea. D.Nothing can live in the Dead Sea—plants or animals! 4.What does the underlined word “scared” mean? A.Tired. B.Lucky. C.Afraid. D.Excited. 5.What is the purpose of the passage? A.To ask for opinions on swimming in the Dead Sea. B.To share travelling experiences around the Dead Sea. C.To encourage more people to read books in the Dead Sea. D.To introduce one of the most surprising natural wonders of the world. 应用文 Passage 1 www.youthnews https://www.youthnews/yourview YOUTHNEWS News      School Life       Your view      Sport Should Museum Entry Be Free? With International Museum Day coming up, today we are asking readers: Should museums be free or should people have to pay for a ticket? Let us know your view.Comments Museums are not only there for enjoyment; they are education. This is why they must be free. While museums need a huge amount of money to operate, let the wealthy pay for it. The idea of a person or child interested in art not being able to view it because of cost is wrong. Krista Chen (US)-Age 15 Free entry does not attract people or encourage them to appreciate art. Generally people respect things that are difficult or costly to get. Museums should require regular visitors to pay a fee, but provide free tickets as prizes for high-achieving students who can appreciate them more. Fred Smith (New Zealand)-Age 14 Museums teach people about their past. This is part of our shared culture that should be available to everyone, rich or poor. People should never be asked to pay an entrance fee. Rob Sanchez (Australia)-Age 17 There are no simple answers. Low ticket prices could help museums stay open. But companies and businessmen should also provide museums with more money and other support. They have a social responsibility too. Amber White (UK)-Age 16 I think museums and art galleries should all be free to the public. I do, however, think twice a year the museums should organize money-raising events to help pay for the cost of staying open. Li Mishao (China)-Age 15 1.How many readers support the idea of free museums? A.2. B.3. C.4. D.5. 2.Who suggests museums should regularly hold special events to collect money? A.Krista Chen. B.Fred Smith. C.Rob Sanchez. D.Li Mishao. 3.Why does Fred Smith believe that free tickets should be given to high-achieving students? A.Students will then study harder. B.Museums will attract more visitors. C.Museums can make themselves more famous. D.These students can better appreciate museums. 4.Which of the following does Amber White agree with? A.Businesses should offer museums more help. B.People should only pay what they can afford. C.Free entry doesn’t encourage visitors to go to museums. D.Everybody should have a chance to visit museums. 5.What can we know about the website? A.It’s quite a new website. B.It was started in Australia. C.It’s generally for young readers. Pros In my opinion, there is nothing wrong about parents share pictures of their babies online. It shows that they love their children. They just want to share pictures of their kids with their friends. And they can help kids recall their childhood. Our parents have not only given birth to us, but also provided us with a lot of things that we need. Can’t they share our photos to express their happiness and pride? It’s just another way to express their love and we should understand them. Cons Some parents like to share embarrassing photos of their kids online. For example, sometimes their kids are sleeping or crying in their pictures. But most kids don’t want these photos to be shared online. They may not care when they are little babies, but as they grow up, they might be upset about it. Parents should respect and protect their children’s privacy (隐私). Photos can show their children’s faces, places they’ve been to and other information. It’s not safe. Some people might use these photos for bad things. Parents should be more careful about this. 1.According to the pros, which reason is not mentioned (提及)? A.The photos shared online can be good memories. B.Sharing photos online is a way to show parents’ love C.Parents are proud when their kids get good grades in an exam. D.The photos shared online can show how happy and proud parents are. 2.Why does Jack disagree on sharing the kids’ photos online? A.Because photos might be used for bad things. B.Because the kids will be sad when they grow up. C.Because it will take a lot of time to share photos online. D.Because some people will change the kids’ information. 3.Where can you probably read the article? A.In a dictionary. B.In a government report. C.In a science book. D.In a newspaper. Passage 2 I don’t agree with laws concerning ages of drinking alcohol (酒精), driving, and gambling in the United Sates. These laws about young people’s freedom don’t make sense and they are different from place to place. I think many should be changed. In 1984 the United States government passed a law that set the legal (合法的) age for drinking alcohol at 21. I don’t agree with this. I consider a person to be an adult at 18. I think 18 should be the legal drinking age. The legal voting (选举) age used to be 21, but now it is 18, and I hope it will gradually move even lower. Young people should be allowed to choose their leaders. I think anyone who wants to vote should be allowed to. The legal ages for driving and gambling don’t make sense, because they are different from place to place. In many states the driving age is 16, in others 15. The gambling age is 21 in Colorado, 18 in New York. I can’t understand the reasons for these variations. The legal age of marriage is 18, except for Nebraska where it is 19 and Mississippi where it is 21. In Iran, the age for men is 15 and women 13, while in Senegal it is 20 for men and 16 for women. I don’t understand why it is necessary to set an age at all. Finally, I think young people should work together to address the situation. Write to your leaders in the government and let them know how you feel! 1.This reading is mainly about ________. A.the ages at which various activities are allowed by law B.why many legal ages don’t make sense and should be changed C.how young people can lower the legal ages D.how different United States laws are from those of other countries 2.In the United States, different states have different legal ages for ________. A.voting B.drinking alcohol C.passing laws D.driving 3.For whom is the legal age of marriage the youngest? A.Men in Mississippi. B.Women in Senegal. C.Women in Iran. D.Women in Nebraska. 4.From the passage we can learn that ________. A.legal ages are sometimes changed B.leaders never listen to young people C.all countries have the same legal ages D.the reasons for legal ages are easy to understand Passage 3 When I was a boy, we had a tiny television set. It only had one channel. Still, I would always be in my chair when cartoons came on. The one I liked best was The Jetsons. It was a cartoon series set in a future that was full of fantastic machines that could do anything. I always smiled when I watched it and dreamed of a day when I would have machines like this to do all my work, so I could just sit back and relax. Now my life is full of machines like these. But if anything, I seem to have more to do than ever. Just today I had to spend most of the morning downloading a new version of my word processing program so I could write this article. When I first started out, I wrote my stories on lined notebook paper and it took half the time. Last week, I spend most of another morning trying to get my new coffee maker to work right. I seem to be drowning in a sea of new rules and problems that come with new technology. Now don’t get me wrong. Computers and machines have done a lot to help all of us. I just want us to be able to use them without them using us. We always seem to be busy because we’re spending all of our time using these machines. I hope that in the future, machines can be more user-friendly, so we don’t spend all our time on them. With machines we can live an easier life, but they can never replace time spent with family and friends. 1.Paragraph 3 is written to ________. A.state that the writer’s dream finally came true B.prove that using machines is really convenient C.show that machines bring many problems in life D.help readers imagine what future life will be like 2.What does the writer suggest? A.We should spend more time on machines. B.Machines should be made more user-friendly. C.We should live with family rather than machines. D.More machines should be created for an easier life. 3.How is the passage organized? A.B. C. Do they have any strict family rules for you? A.The dry lake bed. B.The long tracks. C.The weight of the rocks. D.The shapes of the rocks. 3.How is the weather in Death Valley? A.Hot in the day and wet at night. B.Cool in the day and dry at night. C.Hot in the day and cold at night. D.Cold in the day and windy at night. 4.What can carry the rocks over the lake bed? A.The wind. B.The heat. C.The rain. 【答案】1.C 2.B 3.D 4.B 【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲和智能手机一样能改变我们生活的智能眼镜将在生活中的应用及目前尚待解决的问题。 1.推理判断题。根据“This is why scientists are hoping, and working for something new, something that will change our lives just as greatly as smartphones do. Is it good? Here are some students’ opinions. A.B. C. D. 【答案】1.C 2.B 3.D 【导语】本文作者回忆儿时对机器代劳工作的幻想,感慨如今生活虽充满机器却更忙碌,希望未来机器更人性化。 1.主旨大意题。根据“Now my life is full of machines like these. But if anything, I seem to have more to do than ever. Just today I had to spend most of the morning downloading a new version of my word processing program so I could write this article.”并结合本段内容可知,这一段重点在于展示机器在生活里带来的诸多不便和问题。故选C。 2.观点态度题。根据“I hope that in the future, machines can be more  user-friendly, so we don’t spend all our time on  them.”可知,作者主要的建议是希望机器能变得更加便于用户使用。故选B。 3.篇章结构题。通读全文可知,第一、二段主要介绍了作者自己的童年并介绍的梦想——有一天能有这样的机器来完成所有的工作,第三、四段介绍作者在使用机器中遇到的问题以及自己对此的看法,第五段表达自己对未来机器的期望。故选D。 $
