The Debate (辩论) on Whether Good Manners Are Still Important
Nowadays, people are discussing whether good manners are still as important as they used to be. Some think manners are very important, while others believe they are old-fashioned and not necessary.
On one side, many people believe that manners are the basic rules for getting on well with others. They teach us how to behave properly. For example, using a knife and fork the right way at the table can show respect. Also, good manners create a friendly environment. People can spend time together without worrying about offending (冒犯) each other.
On the other hand, some people feel that manners can put too much pressure on people to fit in. What’s more, good manners can be different from one culture to another. For example, in some countries, it’s polite to eat with your hands, while in others, using chopsticks is expected. Besides, they argue that being polite doesn’t always reflect true feelings. If people are kind to each other, there is no need to follow set (固定的) rules. Also, manners have changed over time. About 100 years ago, children were expected to be quiet unless an adult spoke to them, which is very different from today:
Now that you’ve read more about this topic, visit kids.theweekjunior.com/polls, so you can vote in our debate. Vote YES if you think it’s important to have good manners or NO if you don’t. We’ll publish the results next week.

A. They give people too much pressure to fit in. B. Politeness doesn’t always show real feelings.

62. Where can readers vote on this topic?
A. In a classroom discussion. B. At a community meeting.

How to Write Your Own Poetry (诗歌)
Poetry is a creative way to express your ideas in words. Many writers enjoy writing poems because there are no real rules in writing them. Even so, there are some useful tips that can help you.
The best way to become a better writer is to be a reader first. Reading poets’ work can help you decide what kind of poem you might prefer. Ask a teacher for advice or visit a library. Some books you can read include “Swimming Upstream: Middle School Poems”, “Honeybee” by Naomi Shihab Nye, and “Soccer verse: Poems About Soccer”.
Pick a Subject
When thinking about what to write, start by observing what’s around you and thinking about what you love. It can be anything from a sport you like to an interesting place you’ve visited. You can get ideas from things you care about, such as helping animals or protecting the Earth.
Consider Different Styles of Poetry
Common styles include rhyming, free verse, and haiku.
●Rhyming: It uses similar sounds in words (for example, “cat” and “sat”). The most common rhyming poem rhymes words at the end of a line of verse.
●Free Verse: Doesn’t follow a common structure. For example, it doesn’t rhyme and reads more like everyday talking.
●Haiku: A kind of Japanese poem. It has three lines. The first and third lines have five syllables, and the middle line has seven syllables. (A syllable is a single sound of a word. For example, “reading” contains two syllables: read and ing. )
Start Writing
Keep a small notebook to jot down your ideas, such as colors, smells or sounds. From there, you can start writing your poem. Once you have a draft ready, you can put it away for a day. Then read your poem again and make changes until you like how it sounds.
Share it with Someone
After finishing your poem, share it by reading it to a family member, a teacher, or even your pet. Reading a poem aloud can bring it to life.
66. What are three types of poetry mentioned in the article?
A. Rhyming, Free Verse, Haiku. B. Rhyming, Sonnet, Haiku.
C. Free Verse, Limerick, Haiku. D. Rhyming, Free Verse, Sonnet.
67. What does the underlined word “observing” mean?
A. Talking about loudly. B. Writing down quickly.
C. Looking at carefully. D. Thinking about deeply.
68. What does a haiku consist of in terms of syllables?
A. 5-5-7 B. 5-7-5 C. 7-5-7 D. 7-7-5
E
Have you ever wondered why we can’t control those “achoo” moments? Welcome to the unusual world of sneezes (打喷嚏) Here’s some fun information about them.
First, it all starts with a tickle (痒). Whether it’s dust, pepper, or even sunshine, if your body thinks something might be harmful, your brain sends a warning to sneeze. Also, a sneeze can travel up to 100 miles per hour (160 km/h)! Imagine your sneeze going as fast as a race car. It’s your nose’s way of saying, “ ▲ ”
After a sneeze, we often say “bless you”. This is believed to stop evil spirits from entering the body. So, every “bless you” is like a mini exorcism (驱邪) for your nose. Also, one sneeze can start a chain reaction (连锁反应), spreading from one person to another. For example, once someone starts sneezing, others may join in. It’s the social side of sneezing!
Finally, did you know that some people close their eyes naturally when they sneeze? Scientists have done a lot of research, but still aren’t sure why this happens, but it seems to be a natural body response.
All in all, after knowing the unusual world of sneezes, we should accept them. Next time you feel a tickle in your nose and want to sneeze, just go with it. It’s not just a sneeze. Instead, it’s a special performance by your amazing nose!
69. Which of the following can be put in the “ ▲ ” in Paragraph 2?
A. Don’t worry, it’s OK! B. Clear the way, I’m coming through!
C. Take it easy, I will be fine! D. Pay attention, I’m parking here!
70. Which of the following is TRUE about the sneeze?
A. It can travel up to 160 miles per hour. B. It can completely stop people from evil spirits.
C. It hasn’t been studied by scientists so far. D. It can spread from one person to another easily.
71. How is the above passage organized?
A. B. C. D.
72. What’s the writing purpose of this passage?
A. To introduce interesting facts about sneezes. B. To explain the bad results of sneezing.
C. To advise people to sneeze more often. D. To tell people how to avoid sneezes.

Have you ever wondered why we can’t control those “achoo” moments? Welcome to the unusual world of sneezes (打喷嚏). Here’s some fun information about them.
Finally did you know that some people close their eyes naturally when they sneeze?
A. B. C. D.

【答案】例文
Dear David,
I hope you’re doing well! I’m so excited about your visit next month too! Before you come, there are a few things you should know about our school rules and customs to make your visit as enjoyable as possible.
Our school has some rules that you should know. Students are supposed to wear uniforms on school days, so you don’t need to worry about choosing clothes. Also, it’s important to be on time for class and all activities. Punctuality helps everyone start the day smoothly and shows respect for teachers and classmates. Besides, we are expected to keep quiet in the library as loud noises can make it hard for others to study or read.
Regarding music, I love pop music because it’s catchy and energetic. Songs like “Shape of You” by Ed Sheeran are my favorites as they make me feel happy and positive. Pop music often tells stories through its lyrics, which I find very interesting.
Looking forward to seeing you soon and sharing more when you arrive!
Yours,
Li Hua
