A-Z OF COACHING
Welcome to Barefoot Coaching’s A-Z series. We aim to simplify those complex psychological (心理的) theories and talk about them in a way that anybody can understand. We believe that everybody benefits from learning and practicing coaching skills! Each issue we will be focusing on a different part of coaching. Last month we explored Happiness, and this month we will focus on Intuition (直觉).
‘I’ IS FOR INTUITION
“There is a voice that doesn’t use words. Listen.”
If you have ever followed a“ hunch” (预感), gone with your gut, listened to your inner voice, or felt “I just know”, then you have accessed your intuition. We don’t have to give up logic (逻辑) or intellect (智力) to follow intuition—good decisions are often the result of instinct (本能) and intellect working together. Here are 3 ways to improve your intuition:
·Wild writing. Sit quietly and write for 5 minutes without thinking every day. Just let the words appear on the page. Then notice what you learn from your wild thoughts.
·Walking without purpose. Go for a walk without your phone. Take notice if you find your attention being drawn to any sights or sounds. Pay attention to what feelings, thoughts or meaning they have for you.
·Changing the way to decide. When faced with a decision, ask yourself “What does my heart and gut say?”

One day you pick up your phone for a video call with a friend. Not only can you see his face and hear his voice, but you can also smell the cookies he has just baked. It sounds like something out of a science fiction movie, but could it actually happen?
Smells are created by tiny particles called molecules (分子) that float through the air and reach your nose. Your nose then sends signals to your brain, which recognizes the smell. So, could your phone send smell molecules to you so that you know what it is?
Think about how your phone screen works. It doesn’t have every color in the world stored inside it. Instead, it uses just three colors to create millions of different hues and shades.
Now imagine something for smells. Scientists are developing digital scent (香味) technology that uses a number of different cartridges (盒;匣), each containing a specific scent. Just like how pixels (像素) mix red, green and blue to create images, these scent cartridges could mix to create different smells. Images on your phone are made of digital codes that represent mix of pixels, and smells are created in the same way.
When you receive a digital scent code, your phone could mix tiny amounts of the different scents from the cartridges to create the desired smell. This mix would then be released through a small vent (通风口) on the phone, allowing you to smell it. With a few cartridges, your phone could create a large number of smells.
Creating such a phone faces more challenges. One is designing a system that can produce thousands of different smells using a few cartridges. And phones will also need to sense scents near them and change those into digital codes, so your friends’ phones can send smells to you. The cartridges should also be easy to refill, and the chemicals in them be safe to breathe.
Even though we’re not there yet, maybe one day you’ll be able to not only see and hear your friend’s birthday party over the phone, but also smell the candles they blew out.
41. How do people smell? Put the following sentences in the correct order.
①Tiny particles reach the nose. ②The brain recognizes the smell.
③The nose sends signals to the brain. ④Tiny particles float through the air.
A. ①④③② B. ④①③② C. ①③④② D. ①③②④

B. explain the real possibility of making phones send smells
C. show that it is easier to show colours on the screen
D. introduce the powerful function of future phones
43. Which of the following correctly describes “cartridges”?
A. Three cartridges are needed to make different scents.
B. Cartridges are able to sense scents around the phones.
C. Cartridges create smells according to the digital scent codes.
D. Cartridges play the most important role in making smell phones.
44. Which of the following things CANNOT help people to smell with the phone?
A. Pixels. B. A vent. C. Chemicals. D. Cartridges.
45. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Pixel technology can be used directly to create digital scents.
B. Only in science fiction movies can we see people use smell phones.
C. Smell phones send digital scent codes to the brain to make us smell.
D. A powerful system needs to be developed to make smell phones a reality.
C
It was a summer, but what a summer.
I once had my own vegetable garden. It was my first and my last since I could never get to the country place often enough to keep my eye on it. Anyway, the second summer, the bugs found us and ate my arugula (芝麻菜). I could see the garden needed more care than I could give it, and I stopped.
But the first season was pure heaven. I still remember sitting in that garden, the fresh air on my face, the silence pouring into my ears. Sometimes I would sing, quietly at first and then louder, which brought a small herd of curious cows trotting (小跑) my way to hang their huge heads over the wire fence 20 feet away, staring at me.
Mostly I was sitting down, picking green beans, boiling them, slapping (拍) on a little butter and salt and eating them without anything else. And wanting to sing opera again because they were so good. I dug below the potato plants, stole a few baby potatoes from each plant, and boiled them too. Just butter and salt. So good.
There was too much food in the late summer. My relatives refused to accept any because they had received a lot from others. The neighbours all grew the same thing I did, so they didn’t need any, and when I took it back to the city, no friends wanted it. They spent their summer weekends in the country and had their own gardens.
I never had another garden after that first one. There was a time when I thought life was too short for all my dreams. The choices were too many, and my heart ached that anything had to end or that I had to choose between one thing and another. How could I live on a farm and also travel around the world? It seemed that life fully enjoyed could only be full of loss.
Nevertheless, nothing was lost. These memories are a permanent (永恒的) part of me. I often relive that one wonderful summer and my amazing vegetable garden as I did while writing about it for you tonight.
Little by little, the truth became okay with me: someone who loves many things can’t make all of them permanent. You have to walk away from one thing so you can have another. Still, I never expected total absence (缺乏) of sense of loss.
And then I got it. That one summer with my fresh, delicious veggies, all that time to sit on the ground for hours and the unexpected company of cows that loved opera had filled a space in my life that had always been empty before that.
But never has it been empty again.
46. Why did the author stop to plant a veggie garden?
A. She couldn’t afford time or energy for the garden.
B. She was tired of too much farm work.
C. She had no interest in gardening.
D She was afraid of bugs.

D. To introduce how to cook beans and potatoes well.
48. The author failed to share her veggies because of the following reasons EXCEPT ________.
A. her friends also had gardens B. her neighbours grew the same thing

B
