Eleven of the world’s languages have at least one hundred million native (本土的) speakers. The biggest are Chinese, English, Spanish, Arabic and Hindi. Next come Portuguese, Bengali, Russian, Japanese, French and German. But the world has about seven thousand languages. As many as half of these may be at risk of disappearing by the end of this century. That would mean one language dies every two weeks.
Members of the Siletz Indian tribe (部落) in Oregon, a northwestern state of America, take pride in their language. Their language, they say, “is as old as time itself.” But today, very few people can speak it well.
More than ten thousand words and phrases can be found in the Siletz Online Talking Dictionary. Professor Harrison has posted talking dictionaries for seven other highly endangered languages from around the world. __①__ Smartphone Apps, YouTube videos and Facebook pages have all become digital (数码的) tools for language experts.
Professor Harrison and the researchers in Oregon have mapped areas of endangered languages. One is the Pacific Northwest in the United States. Others include the upper Amazon basin (亚马逊盆地) in South America, Siberia (西伯利亚) and northern Australia. __②__
In Canada’s far north, the Inuit (因纽特) people are trying hard to save their native language, Inuktitut. Part of the effort comes from Microsoft. The company is translating words in its Windows operating system and Office software into Inuktitut. __③__
Nowadays, so many people spend their whole day sitting in front of a computer. If you’re sitting in front of your computer in English all day, that just improves your English. If you’re now using Inuktitut, that is your language. Microsoft has also worked with language experts in New Zealand, Spain and Wales to translate its software into more different languages, such as Maori, Basque, Catalan and Welsh. __④__

An old saying used for forecasting (预测) the weather says, “Red sky at night, sailors’ delight. Red sky in the morning, sailors (水手) take warning.” Is the saying true? It turns out that it is. A red sky at sunset may mean that there are clear skies to the west, where the sun sets. A red sky at sunrise usually means that the clear weather has already passed, so storms might be coming.
Forecasting the weather has been practiced for thousands of years. In the 5th century BC, the Greeks sent out forecasts to sailors. They used signs in nature to forecast the weather. But today, meteorologists send exact forecasts further in advance (提前). They use scientific instruments to study weather conditions around the world and make forecasts. Pilots, farmers and many other people depend on these forecasts. Luckily, most of us can simply look on the smart phone or turn on the TV to find out what kind of weather is coming.
If you are looking for some signs of the weather, pay attention to nature. There are two basic rules used in weather forecasting: Weather generally moves from west to east, and low air pressure (压力) usually means rain or snow. So pay attention to the signs. If rainbows form in the west at sunrise, the sun is on the way. Smell the flowers— their smells are stronger in wet air. What are the ants doing? Are they moving to higher ground? This could mean a drop in air pressure. Are the birds flying low or high? Falling air pressure may influence birds’ ears, so they fly low. And if the sky is red at sunset, you might plan a picnic for the next day!
33.What is the old saying about?
A.The beauty of sunrise. B.The night sky.
C.The signs of the weather. D.The sailors’work.
34.What does the underlined word “meteorologists” mean?
A.The persons who give daily weather reports on TV.
B.The persons who carry out research on natural history.
C.The persons who take an interest in plants and animals.
D.The persons who do scientific studies of weather conditions.
35.What do we know from the last paragraph?
A.It’ll be sunny if ants move to higher places.
B.The smells of flowers are stronger in wet air.
C.Birds fly higher because of the low air pressure.
D.It’ll rain if rainbows form in the west at sunrise.
36.What is the writer’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To encourage people to get close to nature.
B.To express the need for weather forecasting.
C.To explain nature can tell us about the weather.
D.To discuss how important weather forecasting is.
根据“A red sky at sunset may mean that there are clear skies to the west, where the sun sets. A red sky at sunrise usually means that the clear weather has already passed, so storms might be coming.”
根据“But today, meteorologists send exact forecasts further in advance (提前).”
根据“Smell the flowers—their smells are stronger in wet air.”

Chinese Zhurong rover on the surface of Mars has been doing research into how the planet changed in climate about 400,000 years ago.
Mars is also known as the “Red Planet”, because it’s red! It can get pretty cold on Mars, much colder than our own planet, since it’s further away from the sun.
Data collected by the Zhurong rover, which landed on Mars in 2021, shows the wind direction on the southern Utopian Plainhad changed 70℃ from north- east to north-west. This caused the crescent-shaped (新月形的) dunes (沙丘) that had formed during the last glacial (冰川的) period into long, dark ridges. A ridge is a raised line where two sloping surfaces (坡面) meet.
Scientists analyzed (分析) the wind direction by studying the surface structure of Mars. The ridges were once discovered by spacecraft in the orbit of Mars but it was never clear what caused their formation.
The Zhurong ro ver went into sleeping mode in May 2022 and was meant to start operations in December 2022 but has been out of action since, most likely because it is covered in dust. It was the first Chinese rover to land on Mars. China also placed its Tianwen-1 orbiter (轨道器) around Mars, which sent the data collected by the Zhurong ro ver to the earth. Tianwen-1 entered Mars’s orbit on February 10, 2021.
“The research on the climate change of Mars has been of great concern (关注) for a long time,” said Li Chunlai, a scientist of the study. Mars is the most similar planet to the earth in the solar system, so understanding the climate evolution of Mars helps scientists better understand the history of the earth and other planets.
37.It’s very cold on Mars because ________.
A.it’s a red planet B.it’s far from the sun
C.it’s smaller than the earth D.it’s over 40000 years old
38.Which picture shows a “ridge” to us?
A. B. C. D.
39.Scientists directly got the data on Mars from ________.
A.the Zhurong rover B.the Tianwen-1 orbiter
C.the Tiangong space station D.the satellite around the earth
40.What’s the last paragraph mainly about?
A.Scientists’ hard work. B.The climate evolution of Mars.
C.The importance of the research. D.The history of the earth and other planets.
根据“It can get pretty cold on Mars, much colder than our own planet, since it’s further away from the sun.”
根据“the wind direction on the southern Utopian Plainhad changed 70℃ from north- east to north- west. This caused the crescent- shaped (新月形的) dunes (沙丘) that had formed during the last glacial (冰川的) period into long, dark ridges. A ridge is a raised line where two sloping surfaces (坡面) meet.”
根据“China also placed its Tianwen-1 orbiter (轨道器) around Mars, which sent the data collected by the Zhurong rover to the earth”可知中国还将天问一号环绕火星运行,将祝融号探测器收集的数据送入地球。故选B。
根据“The research on the climate change of Mars has been of great concern (关注) for a long time”以及结合“ so understanding the climate evolution of Mars helps scientists better understand the history of the earth and other planets”可知最后一段介绍了这个研究的重要性。
Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is why some friendships don’t last very long. 41 You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous(慷慨的) ; be understanding.
Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you don’t tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven’t been honest, you may lose your friend's trust. 42
Generousity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You don’t have to give your lunch money or your clothes, of course. Instead you have to learn how to share things you enjoy, your hobbies and interests. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. 43 They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them you help your friend know you better.
Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. 44 So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend’s place so you can understand the problem better.
45 But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friendships, you must practice honesty, generosity and understanding.
A.To have a friend, you must learn to be one.
B.A friend in need is a friend indeed.
C.No two friendships are ever exacty alike.
D.Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem.
E.These can be valuable to a friend.
F.Good friends always trust one another to speak and act honestly.
【答案】41.A 42.F 43.E 44.D 45.C

There were tubes (试管) all over my lab desk. Once again, my experiment had refused to work. I felt 46 (hope). A few months earlier, when I had just started the project, I was confident. “I 47 (succeed) if I work hard enough.” I encouraged myself. So I spent long hours in the lab every day. When the experiment failed, I 48 (simple) worked harder.
Yet here I was, working harder than ever—but not getting anywhere. I didn’t know what to do.
It was late in the evening. One other person was still in the lab, and he noticed my 49 (worry) face. He came over and asked how I was doing. “I 50 (try) thousands of times so far, but...” I told him about my problems. After we talked through the experiment, “I think it’s time to go home and get some sleep. Taking a break is also hard work, you know,” he said with a smile.
Those words opened my eyes. I no longer made 51 (me) work too hard in the lab. I felt less stressed and my research started to make progress.
One day, I 52 (drink) coffee at a cafe, when my professor came in. We discussed the habit of working too hard together. He said, “We need to work smarter, not 53 (hard).” I felt a little surprised. I had never heard my professor 54 (say) anything like this.
Our conversation that day helped me understand that exciting ideas can hardly come from a mind under pressure. My best ideas almost always 55 (come) when I have allowed my mind to relax—whether that’s cooking a nice dinner or going on long hikes with my brother. Part of working smarter, I realized, can be taking a break.
Today, I try to pass this idea on to my own students. Work-life balance is not a barrier to excellent research. It is an important part of it.

56.(d)ies 57.(t)hird 58.(d)ifferent 59.(a)dult 60.(d)own 61.(l)ess 62.(p)roblem 63.(n)ame 64.(s)everal 65.(f)amous
根据“Sleep is very important.”
根据“That’s about 121 days a year!”

根据“an average of seven to eight hours a night.” 故填(d)own。
根据“A baby needs 16 hours of sleep every day. Children 6 to 12 years old need an average of ten to twelve hours of sleep. Teenagers need nine to ten hours of sleep. ”可知,从婴儿到50岁以后的人群,所需睡眠时长逐渐减少,所以此处表示年龄越大,需要的睡眠越少,结合首字母“l”,“less”是“little”的比较级,意为“更少的”,修饰不可数名词“sleep”。故填(l)ess。
62.句意:大约三分之一的美国人有睡眠问题。根据“Many of these people cannot fall asleep.”以及“The...of this problem is insomnia”可知,此处说的是有睡眠方面的问题,结合首字母“p”,“problem”表示“问题”,前面有不定冠词“a”,用单数形式。故填(p)roblem。

He moved from one to another to fall asleep. Mark Twain had a different way. He lay on his side across the end of the bed!”
