Using science to solve “snow” problems
Learn about ways to cut down on catkins from trees
The “April snow” is here! It’s not real snow of course—it’s catkins (飞絮) from willows and poplar trees (杨树) in spring.
For some people, this “snow” is not welcomed. Catkins can cause allergies (过敏), making people’s noses, eyes, and skin uncomfortable.
In spring, the female (雌性的) trees grow lots of flowers. When these flowers finish growing, they produce cotton-like seeds that spread through the air.
Luckily, scientists have found many ways to control catkins. Doing “gender change surgery (变性手术)” on willow and poplar trees is one of them. People cut off the branches of female trees and replace (替换) them with branches from male (雄性的) trees. This cuts down the number of catkins. However, this way is slow and expensive. A skilled worker can do the “surgery” on less than ten trees a day. From 2008 to 2018, only around 1,000 trees were treated in Beijing, reported Outlook Weekly (《瞭望》) in 2022.
Scientists in Wuxi, Jiangsu, use special injections (注射剂) to reduce the number of catkins on trees. These injections make the trees mainly use their energy to grow bigger and get more leaves, not to reproduce (繁殖) and make catkins. Xu Qinming, an expert in Wuxi, told Science and Technology Daily that this method is safe for the trees. However, the trees need to get injections every year to keep the catkin numbers under control.
Other than injections, the trees can take “medicine”. This medicine can be sprayed (喷洒) onto the trees before the catkins form, which can quickly reduce catkin numbers. Still, people need to be careful about how much of the medicine they use and when they use it, or they might hurt the environment.
24. What can we infer from Paragraphs 1 and 2?
A. Catkins are hard to see. B. It’s normal to snow in April.
C. People welcome willows. D. It’s uncomfortable to breathe in catkins.
25. What does the “gender change surgery” refer to?
A. Cutting off the branches of female trees. B. Planting more male trees.
C. Planting more female trees. D. Changing the gender of the branches.
26. How many ways are introduced to deal with catkins?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
27. What’s the disadvantage of using injections according to the passage?
A. Trees need to be injected every year. B. It needs many skilled workers to do it.
C. It is slow and expensive. D. It’s bad for the trees and environment.

①It used to be common to think of robots as just machines designed to do dirty, boring and dangerous work. In recent years, companies has begun to design robots as toys for children. These have become so popular that experts and parents are worried about the effects of friendships between robots and children.
②In 1940, lsaac Asimov wrote a story called Robbie. In the story, a girl made friends with a robot and her mother was worried about their friendship. At the end of the story, the robot saved the girl’s life and her mother changed her opinions on the robot. In real life, there are also different opinions about humans “hanging out” with robots.
③Experts are worried because children might believe that robots are human beings, not machines. It may seem strange that we can feel a connection with a machine, but just think of the friendly robots in science fiction, from WALL-E to R2-D2. Could close relationships with a robot confuse children?
④Some people think it’s possible. In the past, children would play with lifeless toys. But today’s robots are designed to express feelings in a human way, and some are able to interact (互动) with children. When children say they don’t want to play, the robots will show their disappointment. Also, they are designed to show sadness if they lose in games.
⑤In fact, there’s a real danger that humans forget that robots are not human beings. In an experiment, researchers from different universities in Germany invited 89 people to interact with a robot and then turn it off. However, when they finished the interaction, the robot asked half of the people not to turn it off. These people hesitated (犹豫) before they did so and 13 of them actually refused to turn it off!
⑥Sometimes robots may make good companions for us. But let’s not forget—they aren’t living beings and they don’t have feelings. At least, not yet.
28. Why did the mother change her opinions about Robbie?
A. Because Robbie wrote a story. B. Because Robbie played with her.
C. Because Robbie expressed feelings. D. Because Robbie saved her child.
29. What does the underlined word “confuse” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Make something clear. B. Mistake one thing for another.
C. Make somebody excited. D. Help somebody solve the problem.
30. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The children. B. The robots. C. The companies. D. The researchers.
31. What is the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To tell us not to treat robots as human beings. B. To warn us not to let robots do dangerous work.
C. To ask us to read science fiction about robots. D. To advise us to create friendships with robots.
(D)
During the past one hundred years, there have been many inventions (发明物) that make our life much easier and more interesting. TV is one of them. Many people enjoy watching TV for fun. Some even believe that TV has made their children clever because there are all kinds of information on it—news, sports, music and language. Children can learn a lot from TV in a short time without going out. Many parents are happy about this because they themselves are too busy to spend time with their children.
But we have found that more and more children today have problems with reading, thinking and concentrating (集中注意力) even though they have watched a lot of TV. In fact, getting much information from TV does not mean real learning. Children who watch too much TV do not have enough time to think. What children need most is their parents. Parents give children love, and help them solve problems in the right way. We should teach our children what real life is without TV.
32. Why do many people enjoy watching TV?
A. To have fun. B. To learn something. C. To make money. D. To finish their work.
33. What does the writer think of TV?
A. It takes away children’s chance to think.
B. It gives useful advice on becoming better parents.
C. It does not give enough information to people today.
D. It has been the most important invention of the past one hundred years.
34. From the last paragraph, we know ________ can help children solve problems in the right way.
A. friends B. TV C. parents D. radio
35. What can we infer from the passage?
A. People in the future will spend more time on TV.
B. Children should learn more from their parents than from TV.
C. Students who watch TV are cleverer than students who do not.
D. Watching TV is a good way for children to understand real life.

When looking at a pair of old chopsticks, most people would see nothing but waste. But Felix Bock would see boxes, tables, shelves, and so on.
In 2016, Felix Bock, a doctoral student at the University of British Columbia, Canada, found out that people threw away about 100,000 pairs of chopsticks every day in Vancouver alone. He felt the need to do something. So he started the company ChopValue in the same year. The company collected used chopsticks from restaurants, schools, and shopping centers in Canada and the US and turned them into furniture and other artworks. Now in its fifth year, with the rapid growth of the company, Bock employs 40 people, and using his special methods of steam and press machines, he has recycled 32 million pairs of chopsticks.
Bock takes pride in his work. And he hopes the idea behind ChopValue will help people rethink what they see as waste. “I believe every small action can help,” he said. “And I am happy that my business provides a new way for people.” Hundreds of restaurants across North America pay a small sum of money to Bock for the recycling of their used chopsticks. Bock doesn’t stop there. Now he is busy taking his business to more countries and has set up factories for recycling local wood like chopsticks in 10 countries.

【原文】Dear William,
I’m glad that you begin to learn traditional Chinese painting. And I’m willing to tell you something about it.
The traditional Chinese painting has a history of 2,500 years. Brushes and water are two necessary tools of traditional Chinese painting. Artists usually use different colors to express their feelings. To draw a Chinese painting, the Xuan paper is the best tool because it allows the writing brush to move freely on it. Besides, the Chinese pictures are also drawn on the smooth silk, walls, and other things. There are many excellent painters of traditional Chinese painting in Chinese history. Qi Baishi is one of the most famous ones. Xu Beihong, who kept drawing for nearly fifty years, was good at drawing horses. Though their paintings are of different styles, they all show the highest value of traditional Chinese paintings.
Hope we can talk more about Chinese culture.
Yours,
Sandy

Using science to solve “snow” problems
Learn about ways to cut down on catkins from trees
The “April snow” is here! It’s not real snow, of course—it’s catkins (飞絮) from willows and poplar trees (杨树) in spring.
【答案】24. D 25. D 26. C 27. A

【24题详解】
推理判断题。根据“For some people, this ‘snow’ is not welcomed. Catkins can cause allergies (过敏), making people’s noses, eyes, and skin uncomfortable.”可知,飞絮会导致过敏,让人的鼻子、眼睛和皮肤不舒服,由此可推断吸入飞絮会让人感觉不适,故选D。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据“Doing ‘gender change surgery (变性手术)’ on willow and poplar trees is one of them. People cut off the branches of female trees and replace (替换) them with branches from male (雄性的) trees.”
