第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
There is an old saying that America and Britain are “two nations divided by a common language.” No one knows exactly who said this, but it reflects the way many Brits feel about American English. But are American and British English really so different?
Vocabulary
The most obvious difference between American and British English is vocabulary. There are hundreds of everyday words that are different. For example, Americans go on vacation while Brits go on holidays; New Yorkers live in apartments while Londoners live in flats. There are far more examples than we can talk about here. Fortunately, most Americans and Brits can usually guess the meaning through the context of a sentence.
Past Tense Verbs
You’ll also find some differences with past forms of irregular verbs. The past tense of “learn” in American English is “learned”. British English has the option(选择) of “learned” or “learnt”. The same rule applies to “dreamed” and “dreamt”, “burned” and “burnt”, and “leaned” and “leant”. Americans tend to use the -ed ending; Brits tend to use the-t ending.
Spelling
There are hundreds of slight spelling differences between British and American English. Noah Webster, an author, politician and teacher, made an effort to reform English spelling in the late 1700s.
Webster wanted to spell words the way they sounded. You can see Webster’s legacy(遗产) in the American spelling of words like color (from colour) honor (from honour), and labor(from labour).
Not So Different After All
British and American English have far more similarities than differences. With the exception of some regional dialects, most Brits and Americans can understand each other without too much difficulty. They watch each other’s TV shows, sing each other’s songs and read each other’s books. They even make fun of each others’ accents.
1. Which of the following is a group of American words?
A. Vacation; holiday. B. Apartment; flat.
C. Vacation; apartment. D. Holiday; flat.
2. What do we know about British and American English from the last paragraph?
A. They both have some strange words.
B They are affecting people using them.
C. They connect people of the two countries.
D. Their differences have little effect on communication.
3. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Ways to tell British English from American English
B. Differences between British and American English
C. Development of British and American English
D. Difficulty for Brits and Americans to understand each other

A British friend told me he couldn’t understand why Chinese people love cracking sunflower seeds (磕瓜子) as a snack so much. “I’ve met a lot of older Chinese and many have a crack (裂缝) in their front teeth; I believe that’s from cracking the seeds,” he said.
I had never noticed the habit, but once he mentioned it, I suddenly became more aware. I realized that whenever I’m watching TV or typing a report, I always start mindlessly cracking sunflower seeds. My friend doesn’t like sunflower seeds, and, to him, it seems unnecessary to work so much just to get one small seed.
When we were young, the whole family would usually get together for Chinese New Year. Then, we all lived close to one another, usually in a small city, and sometimes even neighbors would go door-to-door on Chinese New Year’s Eve to check out what every family was making.
I remember my parents would be in the kitchen cooking. Out in the living room, a large table would already be laid out, complete with fancy tablecloth, ready-made dumpling fillings, and dishes full of candy, fruits and sunflower seeds. Some of the dishes were to be offered to our ancestors later, while others were for neighbors and children to eat before the evening feast. I must have learned how to crack sunflower seeds back then.
I don’t think it’s right to criticize one’s choice in food or eating habits, no matter how strange they may seem.
It’s not only in China. When I went abroad, I found people had all kinds of strange habits when it came to food. In Denmark, they put salted red fish on bread and eat it for dinner, no matter how much it ruins your breath. They think it’s a delicacy (美味佳肴), and it’s connected to their certain culture. I think it’s a wonderful tradition.
4. What did the writer become aware of?
A. She had ever typed a report about seeds.
B. She had various snacks while watching TV.
C. She had a habit of cracking sunflower seeds.
D. She damaged her teeth by eating sunflower seeds.
5. What does the writer prove by mentioning Chinese New Year?
A. The families get together for it.
B. Eating sunflower seeds is related to it.
C. The traditions of celebrating it disappear.
D. Children can eat delicious food on that day.
6. The writer’s attitude to Denmark’s way of eating bread is _________.
A. negative B. uncertain C. doubtful D. acceptable
7. What lesson can we learn from the story?
A. It is good to form healthy eating habits.
B. Eating habits come from a certain culture.
C. Changing your eating habits will change your life.
D. One kind of food doesn’t necessarily suit everyone.

Can you sing in different voices? Chinese singer Zhou Shen can do this. The 27-year-old has become more popular after appearing on the TV show Singer. It has taken Zhou a long time to do so.
While studying in Ukraine, he learned Ukrainian, Russian, Italian and Polish. He can sing Let It Go in nine different languages. He started to sing on TV talent shows and gradually came to accept himself.
At 17, he first sang online without showing his face. Some people fell in love with it. On one of his birthdays, he agreed to show his face. However, when they found out that he was a man, some of them made fun of him. Zhou felt bad about this, but later he got the chance to sing the theme song to the movie Big Fish and Begonia which turned out to be a big success.
“I accept my voice,” Zhou said. “It is good as long as it is natural and honest.” Zhou Shen doesn’t just sing well. He is also humorous. He has a nice personality (性格) and is friendly to his fans. Some people call him “treasure boy”.

Earthquakes are among the most mysterious and terrifying natural disasters. While we can sometimes predict major ones, others strike without warning, devastating cities and causing fires, landslides and tsunamis. With climate change leading to increased wildfires and hurricanes, could it also make earthquakes more common?
The most dangerous earthquakes are tectonic earthquakes, caused by the movement of Earth’s tectonic plates. These plates shift about 1.5 centimeters per year due to internal heat, building pressure until they suddenly move, which releases energy and causes earthquakes.
Unlike other disasters, it’s almost impossible to predict when earthquakes will happen, making planned evacuations next to impossible.
Unfortunately, climate change could make quakes happen closer together and with more intensity, experts told Live Science. With global warming, glaciers are melting at an increased rate. When melted glacier water flows off land and into the sea, the land that used to sit underneath it rises, said John Cassidy, an earthquake seismologist at the Geological Survey of Canada and the University of Victoria.
More concerning than glacial-melt earthquakes are those that could be caused by an increase in sea level. As sea levels rise, pressure underwater on the seafloor also goes up, said Marco Bohnhoff, a geophysicist at GFZ Helmholtz Centre Potsdam and Free University Berlin in Germany. As water pressure spikes, the pressure on fault lines near the coast will also increase.
Even if we stopped using greenhouse gases now, it would take up to 1,000 years for sea level rise to stop, Bohnhoff added. He predicts that over that time, the gaps between big coastal earthquakes will become shorter.
Cassidy is uncertain if sea level rise will cause giant quakes to happen faster within our lifetimes. He emphasized that climate change will make them more dangerous. “It’s an important topic, and one that I’m sure we’ll see a lot of information coming out on in the coming months and years,” he said. “But no matter what we’ve discovered, it’s not good news.”
12. What does the article tell us about tectonic earthquakes?
A. They are easier to predict than others.
B. They happen mostly near coastal areas.
C. They result from the shifting of Earth’s plates.
D. They rarely lead to other natural disasters.
13 What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A The land. B. The glacier. C. The quake. D. The sea.
14. What does Bohnhoff imply?
A. Human actions have long-term effects.
B. Coastal areas will be safer over time.
C. Earthquakes will become more predictable.
D. Sea level rise will eventually stabilize.
15. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. The Formation and Prediction of Earthquakes
B. Climate Change and Its Potential Impact on Earthquakes
C. How Sea Level Rise Affects Coastal areas
D. The Dangers of Tectonic Earthquakes

13. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The land. B. The glacier. C. The quake. D. The sea.
14. What does Bohnhoff imply?
A. Human actions have long-term effects.
B. Coastal areas will be safer over time.
C. Earthquakes will become more predictable.
D. Sea level rise will eventually stabilize.
15. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. The Formation and Prediction of Earthquakes
B Climate Change and Its Potential Impact on Earthquakes
C. How Sea Level Rise Affects Coastal areas
D. The Dangers of Tectonic Earthquakes
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. A 15. B

Before I could say “Please don’t,”my mom had agreed to come to my class every morning at 9:30 for a week.Oh,and just to be clear,it’s not as if she’s a professional entertainer (演员).My parents run a small grocery store, and the only singing my mom does is in the shower.
“Um,”I said on our way home,“are you sure this is such a good idea?”
“Of course!” she said.“If we want your school’s Winter Fair to happen, people need to step up and volunteer.”
“I know volunteering is important,” I said.“But couldn’t you help out in another way instead?”
She laughed.“Don’t be silly. We’ll have great fun!”
“OK,everyone,”my teacher said at 9:28 on Monday“We’re going to stop silent reading a little early because a special guest is here to help us with a performance for Winter Fair.”
“Let’s all welcome Arizona’s mother.”
I looked up to discover my mom standing at the front of the room wearing the world’s silliest hat.
“I’m super excited to be here with you!”my mom said.“I’m going to teach you a fun little songanddance number I learned a few years back, when I did some theater in college. Here goes!”
Oh,please,oh,please,I said over and over in my head, let there be a fire drill (演习) or a power outage (停电),or anything to stop my mom for completely embarrassing herself—and me!

Arizona’s mother is pretty talented!”
