①When you are considering a college or university in the United States, deciding which school to attend is very important. The first step is to decide whether a small or large college is right for you. Both small and large schools have their advantages and disadvantages.
②If you would like a more intimate (温馨的) learning environment, a small college or university may be perfect for you. Typically, a small school has 5,000 or fewer students. Small colleges and universities can offer you the chance to know your classmates and professors on a deeper level.
③On the other hand, although small schools can offer more attention, they may be a bit stressful for some students, because you may hardly find a place where you belong. In addition, you may see one small part of life in America if you stay just on campus, and there may be fewer choices available to you for courses, after-class activities, etc.
④When it comes to a large university, if you want a school with plenty of classes and chances, a large college may be right for you. Large schools may have more offerings, including social and economic (经济的) support for students.
⑤However, a challenging part of attending a large school is the little attention. You may have several professors who do not know your name. Another problem is that there is more competition.
⑥Since every coin has two sides, your decision will come down to your dream, your reasons for coming to the US for school, and your personality. As Stephen R. Covey once put it, “While we’re free to choose our actions, we are not free to choose the consequences of our actions.” Therefore, make sure to do your research before you decide where to go. Good luck!

Soapy sat on a seat in Madison Square, New York, and looked up at the sky. Winter was coming, and Soapy knew that he must make his plans.
He wanted three months in a nice, warm prison with food and good friends as he used to spend his winter. And now it was time, because, at night on his seat in the square, three newspapers did not keep out the cold.
So Soapy decided to go to prison, and at once began to try his first plan. It was usually easy. He ate dinner in an expensive restaurant. Then he told them he had no money and they called a policeman.
Soapy went into the restaurant, but before he enjoyed his dinner, the waiter saw Soapy’s dirty old trousers and terrible shoes. Strong hands turned him around and helped him out into the street again.
He thought of something different. He picked up a stone and threw it at the window without running away. He spoke to a strange woman and insulted her with a policeman standing by not far away. He took a gentleman’s expensive umbrella on purpose and wanted him to call the police.
However, no matter what he did, the police did not send him to prison.
Disappointed and angry, Soapy began to walk back to Madison Square and home—his seat. But on a quiet corner, Soapy suddenly stopped. In the middle of the city was a beautiful old church. Through one purple window he could see a soft light, and sweet music was coming from inside the church. Soapy thought of the days when he had a mother, friends, and beautiful things in his life.
Soapy decided to change his life and be a new man. “Tomorrow,” he said to himself, “I’ll go into town and find work. My life will be good again. Everything will be different. I’ll...” Soapy felt a hand on his arm. He jumped and looked round quickly—into the face of a policeman!
“What are you doing here?” asked the policeman. “Nothing,” Soapy answered.
“Then come with me,” the policeman said.
“Three months in prison,” they told Soapy the next day.

①The Paris Olympics have come to an end. China has won forty gold medals just as many as the USA. During the Olympics, we enjoyed one exciting competition after another.
②Do you know about pole vaulting (撑杆跳高)? Have you ever seen a pole vaulter jump high into the air? It’s amazing how a thin pole can hold up a person and help them jump over a bar that is so high! This special pole is not just any stick: it is made with smart designs and strong materials. With the right kind of pole, a pole vaulter can bend (弯曲) it and then spring (弹) back up, allowing them to reach great heights.
③Let’s dive into the exciting world of pole vaulting and learn how these poles help athletes achieve their dreams!
④Pole vaulting started a long time ago in ancient Greece (古希腊). People used long poles to jump over things. The first competition was around 1829 BC (公元前) in Ireland (爱尔兰), where people jumped over small streams with sticks.
⑤___▲___. In 1896, William Hoyt from America jumped 3.30 meters with a heavy wooden pole. Later, they used bamboo poles from Japan. In 1942, Warmerdam from America set a record by jumping 4.77 meters with a bamboo pole. By 1948, they made poles from fiberglass (玻璃纤维), which is lighter and bends better. These poles are often called “glass steel”; they are made from glass and plastic. Today, many poles are made from carbon fiber (碳纤维), which is even lighter and stronger than fiberglass. Modern carbon fiber poles have three layers (层): the outside is strong carbon fiber, the middle is woven carbon fiber, and the inside is fiberglass. These poles can bend a lot when athletes run fast, but they still support the athlete’s weight, helping them jump over the bar.
⑥With better technology and materials, pole vaulting has become a sport where athletes keep trying to jump higher. Every jump shows how clever and hardworking people can be. Looking forward to the next Olympic Games, who knows how high the next pole vaulters will go? The sky is the limit (极限)!
36. How has the pole vaulting pole changed over time according to the passage?
A. It has become heavier and less flexible. B. It has been shortened to make the sport easier.
C. It has changed from metal to plastic. D. It has improved to be lighter and more flexible.
37. Which of the following sentences can be put in the ___▲___?
A. However, it was too hard to complete
B. At first, athletes used wooden poles
C. Then people around the world came to love it

阅读下文并回答问题。
China’s Juncao takes roots (生根) in Africa
Just as soil (土壤) provides water and nutrients (营养) for trees, a substrate (基质) works the same way for mushrooms. Farmers usually use trees to make the substrate, which hurts the environment (环境). But now, thanks to China’s “Juncao” (菌草) technology, fewer trees are cut down to do this. Juncao is a grass that can grow up to 8 meters tall. To grow the mushrooms, people first collect the grass and make it into powder (粉末). Then, they mix the powder with water and other things to make the substrate. It helps them grow quickly. Later on, people can eat the mushrooms or sell them.
This “magical” grass has become a popular plant in Africa. After being brought there, Juncao grass has helped many people live a better life. For example, in Rwanda, about 4,000 families are planting Juncao for a living. Thanks to it, many of these families are making much more money than before, reported China Daily.
Besides helping grow mushrooms, Juncao grass has many other things to offer. It has a lot of fiber (纤维), so it can be turned into hard board strong enough to make buildings. Because it is very nutritious (营养丰富的), it is also good food for animals, like cows and sheep.
What’s more, Juncao can help solve environmental problems. For example, its deep roots help make the soil more stable (牢固的). When it rains, there is less chance of the soil being washed away. Now, it is benefiting (造福) the world.
The Juncao technology was invented by a group of Chinese scientists. The head of the group is Lin Zhanxi, a professor at the Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University. The TV play “Happiness Grass” on CCTV-1 is based on their story. They have been working on this since the 1980s. By July 2022, they had developed 49 kinds of Juncao grasses for 56 kinds of mushrooms. Today, more than 100 countries and regions(地区) are planting Juncao grasses.

C. Then people around the world came to love it
D. So everyone wanted to win a gold medal in pole vaulting
38. What is the writer’s attitude towards the development of pole vaulting poles?
A. Supportive of the advancements. B. Not caring about the changes.
C. Not liking the changes. D. Afraid to see the new materials.
39. Which is the best structure of the passage?
A. ①;②③④⑤;⑥ B. ①②;③④;⑤⑥ C. ①②;③④⑤;⑥ D. ①;②③④;⑤⑥
