Imagine waking up feeling anxious and hopeless. You think, “I’ll never be happy. Nothing I do matters.” The more you focus on these thoughts, the worse you feel. But what’s really going on? Are your thoughts causing your feelings, or is it the other way around?
For centuries, people have debated the cause of emotional suffering. Is it childhood trauma (创伤)? A chemical imbalance in the brain? A lack of love and connection? Every school of psychology has its own theory, with hundreds of ideas but little conclusive proof.
Over 1,700 years ago, the Greek Stoic philosopher Epictetus proposed a different theory. He argued that it’s not life events that upset us, but our thoughts about them. This idea became the foundation of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT suggests that if you change the way you think, you can change the way you feel. It’s an exciting claim — but is it true? We decided to test it using data from a new mental health app.
In our first study, we analyzed data from 290 testers of the Feeling Great app. Unlike traditional studies that rely on broad, retrospective (回顾性) surveys (asking how you’ve felt over the past two weeks), our app measured users’ negative thoughts and feelings in the here and now, using new, extremely sensitive scales. This distinction is crucial. By tracking moment-to-moment changes, we could test if negative thoughts (e.g., “I’m a failure”) actually cause negative feelings or if it’s the other way around. On average, users who reduced their belief in their negative thought to zero experienced an 87% reduction in seven negative emotions during their first session. Our data strongly supports CBT’s central idea that thoughts shape emotions far more than emotions shape thoughts.
To ensure that our findings were solid, we conducted a second independent study with 1,393 users of an AI-enhanced version of the app. The results? Practically identical. Interestingly, with the larger sample size, we did detect a small but statistically significant effect of emotions influencing thoughts — but the effect was barely detectable and far weaker than the impact of thoughts on feelings. This suggests that emotions can sometimes influence thoughts, but the effect is minor in comparison to the power of thoughts to shape emotions. And that’s a discovery Epictetus would have been proud of.
24.What is the central idea of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) discussed in the article?
A.Changing how you think can affect how you feel.
B.Life events are the main cause of our emotional struggles.
C.Childhood trauma is the root cause of emotional distress.
D.Emotions shape thoughts more than thoughts shape emotions.
25.What was different about the Feeling Great app study?
A.It focused on physical symptoms.
B.It tracked thoughts and feelings in real-time.
C.It asked users to recall past emotions.
D.It tracked emotions over a long period.
26.What did the second study show?
A.Users’ emotions were unchanged.
B.Emotions greatly affect your thinking.
C.Thoughts and emotions are unrelated.
D.Thoughts have a stronger effect on emotions.
27.Which of the following would be the best title for this article?
A.The Power of Emotions: How They Shape Our Thoughts
B.Childhood Trauma and Depression: Unveiling the Connection
C.Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Changing How We Think to Feel Better
D.What Causes Depression: New Research Confirms Ancient Wisdom
【答案】24.A 25.B 26.D 27.D
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了认知行为疗法及其科学验证。
24.细节理解题。根据第三段中“CBT suggests that if you change the way you think, you can change the way you feel. (认知行为疗法认为,如果你改变思维方式,就能改变感受方式。)”可知,认知行为疗法的核心观点是改变思维方式可以影响感受方式。故选A。
25.细节理解题。根据第四段中“Unlike traditional studies that rely on broad, retrospective (回顾性) surveys (asking how you’ve felt over the past two weeks), our app measured users’ negative thoughts and feelings in the here and now, using new, extremely sensitive scales. (与传统的依赖于广泛、回顾性调查(询问过去两周的感受)的研究不同,我们的应用程序使用新的、极其敏感的量表来测量用户此时此地的负面想法和感受。)”可知,Feeling Great应用程序研究的不同之处在于它实时追踪了想法和感受。故选B。
26.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“This suggests that emotions can sometimes influence thoughts, but the effect is minor in comparison to the power of thoughts to shape emotions. (这表明情绪有时会影响想法,但与想法塑造情绪的力量相比,这种影响微不足道。)”可知,第二项研究表明想法对情绪的影响更大。故选D。
27.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是结合第三段中“Over 1,700 years ago, the Greek Stoic philosopher Epictetus proposed a different theory.

Modern video games are designed to be as immersive as possible, so it can be easy to get caught up in the moment when you lose a level or don’t beat your high score.
More than 1,000 US residents over the age of 18 who play video games for at least four hours a week were surveyed. Of all the respondents, 41.9 per cent claimed they deal with extreme anger about once a week, and for 8.6 per cent once a day. Just under six per cent of the regular games reported that they fly off the handle more than once a day.
They were also asked what games they found the most rage-causing, with the Call of Duty series taking the top spot for 23.5 per cent of the study participants. The more family-friendly Mario Kart and Minecraft were mentioned by 22 per cent and 21.2 per cent of participants respectively as the most maddening games. Closely behind were League of Legends, which brings anger to 20.1 per cent of participants, Super Smash Bros for another 19.7 per cent and Grand Theft Auto for 19.4 per cent.
This anger also came in different forms, as 18.4 per cent admit they have broken something out of anger. For 73.2 per cent this was their controller, keyboard or mouse, while other common victims of game r anger are drywall, TVs, phones and dishes. Unfortunately, the loved ones of 25.5 per cent of the study participants have been on the receiving end of their anger.
Many of the reasons leading to rage in digital gaming — such as in-game failures, cheating opponents, or an unpleasant gaming environment — were also noted in other gaming settings. Actually, feelings of anger caused by one’s own mistakes, a penalty (罚球) missed by a referee, or annoying behavior by an opponent are all familiar in real life situations — such as ice hockey and football.
28.What does the underlined phrase “fly off the handle” mean?
A.Get angry. B.Shout loudly. C.Cry sadly. D.Leave home.
29.Which game is the least likely to cause anger?
A.Super Smash Bros. B.League of Legends.
C.Grand Theft Auto. D.Call of Duty.
30.What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A.The suffering of game lovers. B.The targets of game anger.
C.Different kinds of games. D.The mental effects of anger.
31.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Players tend to lose temper easily.
B.Competitive games cause violence.
C.Digital gaming shows familiar behaviors.
D.Game anger is also common in real life.

28.词句猜测题。根据划线部分前文“Of all the respondents, 41.9 per cent claimed they deal with extreme anger about once a week, and for 8.6 per cent once a day.(在所有受访者中,41.9%的人声称他们大约每周处理一次极端愤怒,8.6%的人每天处理一次)”可知,该短语的意义与“愤怒、生气”有关,故选A。
29.细节理解题。比较第三段“They were also asked what games they found the most rage-causing, with the Call of Duty series taking the top spot for 23.5 per cent of the study participants. The more family-friendly Mario Kart and Minecraft were mentioned by 22 per cent and 21.2 per cent of participants respectively as the most maddening games. Closely behind were League of Legends, which brings anger to 20.1 per cent of participants, Super Smash Bros for another 19.7 per cent and Grand Theft Auto for 19.4 per cent.(他们还被问及什么游戏最让人生气,结果是Call of Duty系列占据榜首,有23.5%的受访者认为这款游戏最让人生气。更适合家庭玩的Mario Kart和Minecraft分别被22%和21.2%的参与者认为是最让人抓狂的游戏。紧随其后的是League of Legends, 20.1%的玩家对这款游戏感到愤怒,Super Smash Bros和Grand Theft Auto分别为19.7%和19.4%)”各款游戏造成人们愤怒的比例可知,19.4%是最低的,故选C。
30.主旨大意题。根据第四段“This anger also came in different forms, as 18.4 per cent admit they have broken something out of anger. For a lucky 32 percent or so of humans, happiness may seem like a matter of good genes. That's because their DNA encodes(解码) for certain personality quality, like outgoing and low anxiety, which are closely linked to increased levels of life satisfaction. In studies of twins, those genetic differences help explain why one twin was happier with their life than the other.
But a happy life isn't entirely determined by genetics. For the most part, your happiness is impacted by environmental and behavioral factors, aspects of your lives over which we can exercise some control. And there are more direct ways to boost our happiness level, too.
Often referred to as “positive psychology, ” a growing body of evidence suggests there are interventions that can teach people happiness skills, like how to be more compassionate with themselves, or how to enjoy positive experiences. Some emphasize reflecting on your personal strengths and values. Others involve thoughts or connecting with others. Admittedly, none will lead to excitement—but they can make a meaningful difference in your life.
A researcher Lyubomirsky compares learning happiness to creating exercise habits; a routine that has to be practiced frequently. One strategy she recommends is writing thank-you letters to people in your life.
But there's no magic set of practices, though. That's why Lyubomirsky says it's important to find techniques that work for you. If a thank-you letter gets boring or isn't your thing, try calling a friend or thinking.
But neither genes nor clinically tested exercises can protect people from the reality that life is hard. During the pandemic, Santos found herself overworked, exhausted and nearly close to burnout. She was fortunate enough to take a holiday and practice the strategies. The experience has been an important reminder for Santos that even the most scientifically supported exercises can't help if you don't do them.
“The strategies I teach work, ” she says. “But you have to make sure you' re following them and putting them into practice, which takes regular work and effort. ”
32.Which factors mainly influence people's happiness most?
A.The inborn personality aspects. B.The education that people receive.
C.The living environment and habits. D.The interpersonal relationship.
33.How can we learn to be happy?
A.Explore our shining points. B.Compare with other people.
C.Appreciate all our life experiences. D.Think for others instead of ourselves.
34.What does Santos suggest people do?
A.Write thank-you notes to their parents.
B.Take a break to relieve their burden.
C.Find a method suitable to them and stick to it.
D.Read more books to get the practical techniques.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Train yourself to be positive. B.Say no to negative influences.
C.The importance of psychology. D.The secret of personality quality.

Identify emotions. It's important to know what you feel so you can adequately address each emotion appropriately. 37 If you feel anger, for instance, you may start to notice your breathing quickening, your muscles tensing, or your skin feeling flushed. Sometimes, the way you feel may be influenced by how you expect to feel. 39 If you notice yourself placing expectations on how you “should” feel, hold off on making that judgment until you've completed the situation. Or, you may consider which situations you want to enter into beforehand.
Adjust your routines to reduce stress. Think about what events trigger your strong emotions, and try to either avoid them or control your response. For instance, if you tend to get anxious because you often run late for work, adjust your morning routine so you are not rushing. 40

第二节(共10小题:每小题1. 5分, 满分15分)
阅读下面短文, 在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Did you grow up in one culture, your parents came from another, and you are now living in a 56 (total) different country? If so, then you are a third-culture kid.The term “third—culture kid” 57 (use) in the 1960s for the first time by Dr. Ruth. She first came across this phenomenon while 58 (research) North American children living in India. In general, third-culture kids benefit from 59 (they) intercultural experience and they often reach excellent academic results.
Yet many 60 (difficulty) may arise from this phenomenon. Third-culture kids may not be able to adapt themselves completely 61 their new surroundings. Also, they often find it hard 62 (develop) new friendship. Additionally, for a third-culture kid, it is often easier to move to a new country 63 to return to his homeland. For example, after living in Australia for many years, Louis finally returned to the country 64 she was born. She didn’t know anything about current TV shows 65 fashion trends. And she didn’t share the same values as other teens of her age.
【答案】
56.totally 57.was used 58.researching 59.their 60.difficulties 61.to 62.to develop 63.than 64.where 65.or
The term “third—culture kid”与use之间是被动关系,用被动语态,综上所述,应该使用一般过去时的被动语态,所以填was used。
9 she was born.

Jack was a bright and curious child, always eager to learn new things and explore the mysterious world about science. However, he often found himself in disagreement with his mother. His mother was always busy with her work and she didn’t have enough time to learn about his interests and passions.
One day, Jack came home from school feeling particularly excited. He just found a sci-fi book about an adventure on the moon. Upon arriving at home, he couldn’t tear himself away from the book. He read and read until it was dark. Having finished reading it, he couldn’t wait to share it with his mother, only to be told that he should focus on more practical subjects like math and history, which would help him get into a good college and have a successful career.
Jack couldn’t understand why his mother didn’t see the value in what he was doing. He felt that she was holding him back and not allowing him to pursue his true interests. “Why can’t you see how important this is to me?” Jack asked his mother angrily. “I’m never going to be happy if I have to spend my life doing things that I show no interest in just because they are practical or make you proud.”
The once peaceful home was filled with tension and anger. His mother’s voice grew louder as she shouted, “You can’t just do whatever you want! You should be responsible for your future!” Jack, fueled by his own frustration, shot back, “I am tired of you always telling me what to do! I am not a child anymore! You only care about your own feeling! You never thought about my feeling!” They were so caught up in their own anger and hurt that they failed to see how their words and actions were affecting each other.

【范文】
Jack rushed into his bedroom and locked the door heavily. He lay on the bed, huddling himself in the quilt. What he really wanted to do was to cut himself off from the whole world, especially from his mother. He couldn't figure out why his mother didn't understand him and why she forced him to do something he didn't like. Slowly, he fell asleep while thinking.Suddenly he was awakened, hearing his mother's voice outside the door, which was filled with apologies and tenderness. His mother promised him that she would respect his interests in the future.
When Jack heard his mother’s words, regretful tears rolled down his face. He realized that everything his mother did was totally for the sake of his future and what he said hurt his mother's heart hard. It occurred to him that he had never showed his gratitude to his mother. He couldn’t wait to open the door and said thank you to his mother, who was standing in the doorway. He also promised his mother that he would study hard in practical subjects. Finaly, misunderstanding cleared, they hugged each other tightly with a joyful smile.

31.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Players tend to lose temper easily.
B.Competitive games cause violence.

How to Be Less Emotional
Being overly emotional may mean reacting to feelings like anger, sadness and fear quickly instead of letting all of your intelligence weigh in. Chances are, if you feel overly emotional you are relating to your emotions in a way that isn't always constructive. 36
Identify emotions. It's important to know what you feel so you can adequately address each emotion appropriately. 37 If you feel anger, for instance, you may start to notice your breathing quickening, your muscles tensing, or your skin feeling flushed. If you're happy, you may notice smiling or feelings of lightness in your body.
38 They can help calm you down when you're experiencing overwhelming emotions. If you're feeling overwhelmed by emotional intensity, pause to focus on your breathing. Breathing techniques can help you manage your emotions more effectively and help you handle intense emotions better. You may notice that as you experience intense emotions, they bring you further from experiencing yourself and your body.
Monitor your expectations.
A.Cope with your emotions.
B.Practice breathing techniques.
C.However, it's important to learn to regulate your emotions.
D.If you feel anxious, you may notice you burn a lot of emotional energy worrying.
E.Start to reflect on how your body feels when you notice an emotion coming through.
F.If there is a group of people that bring out lots of unpleasant emotions, decrease your time with them.
G.For instance, if you expect that watching a movie may make you sad, you may end up feeling sad.
