In 2010, Brad Montague learned that a West Tennessee homeless shelter had a desperate need for socks, an item often overlooked because used pairs are usually too worn to donate. Without fresh socks, unhoused people easily develop frostbite. Determined to find a solution, Montague took the problem to a dozen teens at the middle school in Henderson, Tennessee, where he volunteered. Together they invented “Socktober”, a simple call for the community to donate new socks every October. The first drive ended with more socks than Montague’s car could hold, and hand-delivering them while greeting recipients with “Happy Socktober!” became, he recalled, “an uplifting and emotional experience.”
Montague posted the results on social media. In 2013, he reinforced (推广) the idea with a “Kid President” web episode — written and directed by Montague — and urged viewers to start local sock drives. The clip (片段) went viral, and participation exploded. Almost fifteen years later, Socktober is held annually in every U.S. state and in Canada, Australia, and India. Montague estimates “millions” of new pairs have been donated, stressing that “anyone can do it,” since socks are inexpensive, universally needed, and easy to share.
To sustain the movement, Montague’s website targets nearby shelters and offers step-by-step tips for successful drives. Schools have become the engine of the tradition. Special-education teacher Rachel Taylor at Elmore Park Middle in Bartlett, Tennessee, has guided students to give roughly 10,000 pairs over the past eight years, calling Socktober “so much more than just socks — it’s love, generosity, and joy.” Eleven-year-old fifth-grader Anderson Brown agrees: “We should show that we care about everybody, no matter what.”
Reflecting on the movement’s quiet power, Montague says, “There are challenges and darkness in the world, but there is also another story happening that involves the quiet work of thousands.”
4. What was the purpose of Socktober?
A. To raise money for the local middle school.
B. To collect new socks for the homeless.
C To organize a festive community event for October.
D. To provide a project management experience for teens.
5. How did Socktober achieve massive growth after 2013?
A. Montague organized national fundraising events.
B. Montague placed an advertisement to promote it.

Zoologist-turned-artist Sara Cox lives near Durham Palace, where “deep, wooded air and wide open spaces” shelter the birds she studies and sculptures. Twenty years ago, she moved to the village of Hoboken and began transforming recycled wire into hyper-realistic birds — curlews, bitterns, blue tits, and other species now under threat. Each sculpture begins outdoors: she hides in tall grass or bushes, watching birds closely. She draws how their wings bend, how light plays on their feathers (羽毛), and how their muscles tense when they fly away. Back in her 200-year-old cottage studio she bends and weaves (编织) metal pieces, timing herself to log every step; one piece can consume weeks because “I can’t waste a minute — I want to get it absolutely right.”
Accuracy is both scientific and emotional. With two science degrees, Cox volunteers at the Walter Trust’s Low Barns reserve. She also spends time studying photographs, preserved birds in museums, and charts of bird body structure. “I need to understand what’s beneath the feathers,” she explains, “so the sculpture feels alive and people sense the bird’s fragility.” By revealing a bird’s physical form, she aims to make people aware of how delicate and at risk they are. Her engineer father taught her to measure and construct; her mother, a potter, showed her how form conveys feeling. Together those influences produced a technique now celebrated nationally.
Earlier this year the Royal Society of British Artists selected several of her endangered species pieces for the annual London exhibition. One of her bird sculptures sold for £2,700. The money from this sale helps improve the habitats for wildlife at Low Barns. Schools ask her to conduct workshops. Also, people visiting the nature area stop to look at her huge wire bird sculpture. They read the sign next to it, which shows how many of these birds have disappeared and suggests easy things people can do to protect them.
“All of our birds are precious,” Cox insists. By combining zoology with art, she turns cold statistics into visible, shareable emotion, hoping viewers will “look up, notice, and protect what’s still there.”
8. Why does Sara Cox spend weeks on one wire bird sculpture?
A. To perfect every small detail. B. To use more recycled metal.
C To follow her father’s plan. D. To win art competitions.
9. What does the underlined word “fragility” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Beauty. B. Weakness. C. Simplicity. D. Speed.
10. What does the author think of Sara Cox’s work?
A. It is largely profit-driven. B. It values speed more than accuracy.
C. It is inspired by museum displays. D. It unites science and artistic sensitivity.
11. What is the ultimate goal of Sara Cox’s work?
A. To train unique artist-scientists. B. To fund wildlife habitat projects.
C. To inspire conservation action. D. To document endangered species precisely.
A 9. B 10. D 11. C

根据第一段尾句“one piece can consume weeks because “I can’t waste a minute — I want to get it absolutely right.” (一件作品要花上好几周时间,因为“我一分钟都不能浪费——我想把它做得绝对精准。”)” 可知,Sara Cox花数周制作一件金属丝鸟类雕塑,是因为她希望作品 绝对精准,即完善每一个细节。选项中“To perfect every small detail(为了完善每一个细节)”与原文“get it absolutely right”直接对应。故选A。
根据第二段关键信息“so the sculpture feels alive and people sense the bird’s fragility (这样雕塑才会显得栩栩如生,人们也能感受到鸟类的脆弱性。)”及后文“make people aware of how delicate and at risk they are (让人们意识到它们是多么脆弱且处于危险之中。)”可知,“fragility”与“delicate and at risk(脆弱且处于危险中) ”构成语义呼应,“delicate and at risk”指向鸟类的脆弱性。
根据第二段首句“Accuracy is both scientific and emotional (准确性既是科学性的,也是情感性的)”,以及后文对其背景的描述“With two science degrees, Cox volunteers at the Walter Trust’s Low Barns reserve (拥有两个科学学位的Cox在沃尔特信托基金会的洛巴恩斯自然保护区做志愿者)”体现科学背景;“her mother, a potter, showed her how form conveys feeling (她的母亲是一位陶艺家,教会了她形态如何传递情感)”体现艺术敏感度,再结合尾段“combining zoology with art (将动物学与艺术结合)”可知,萨拉的作品融合了科学准确性与艺术情感表达。选项中 “It unites science and artistic sensitivity(它结合了科学与艺术敏感度)”符合文意。故选D。

Books and movies of the future might all start to feel the same if creative industries accepted artificial intelligence (AI) to help write stories, a new study warns.
Researchers employed around 300 volunteers as “writers”. These were people who didn’t write for a living and their creative ability was assessed by a standard psychology test that asked them to provide 10 completely different words. The scientists then divided them randomly into three groups to write an eight-sentence story about one of three topics: an adventure on the open seas, in the jungle or on another planet.
They were also divided into three other groups: The first group received no help from AI, the second was given a three-sentence story idea from ChatGPT and the third could receive up to five AI-generated story ideas to help them get started. Their work was then evaluated by themselves and 600 other human reviewers.
The authors found that, on average, AI improved the quality of an individual writer’s creativity by up to 10 percent and the story’s enjoyability by 22 percent, helping particularly with elements like structure and plot twists (转折).
However, on a collective level, AI-assisted stories were much more similar to each other than those produced without any AI help, as writers “attached” themselves too heavily to the ideas suggested by AI.
Study co-author Oliver Hauser of the University of Exeter, UK, said that AI assistance creates a “social dilemma (困境)”. He further noted that while lowering barriers to entry for beginners can be beneficial, there is a risk that decreasing the novelty of art could have long-term negative effects.
The research also showed that, just as introducing pocket calculators to children too early could prevent them from learning basic arithmetic (算数), there is a risk that people might rely too much on AI tools before developing fundamental skills in writing, music or other areas.
People need to start thinking about “where in my workflow can I use this tool to get the most benefit, while still incorporating my own voice into the project or outcome,” study co-author Anil Doshi of University College London said.
12. Why did researchers test non-professional writers?
A. To train future writers. B. To prove AI’s superiority.
C. To compare human and AI skills. D. To examine AI’s impact on creativity.
13. What did the research find about AI-assisted creativity?
A. It decreases personal enjoyment. B. It reduces collective novelty.
C. It boosts individual originality. D. It simplifies the plot structure.
14. What solution does Anil Doshi suggest for AI use?
A. Avoid it in creative work. B. Balance it with personal voice.
C. Use it especially for beginners. D. Prioritize efficiency over novelty.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. The Use of AI in Writing
B. The Death of Human Creativity
C. Artificial Intelligence: A Writer’s New Tool
D. AI’s Creativity Trade-off: Gain vs. Uniformity
D 13. B 14. B 15. D
根据第二段中“Researchers employed around 300 volunteers as “writers”. These were people who didn’t write for a living and their creative ability was assessed by a standard psychology test that asked them to provide 10 completely different words.(研究人员雇了大约300名志愿者作为“作家”。这些人并不以写作为生,他们的创造能力是通过一个标准的心理测试来评估的,测试要求他们提供10个完全不同的单词)”、第三段中“They were also divided into three other groups: The first group received no help from AI, the second was given a three-sentence story idea from ChatGPT and the third could receive up to five AI-generated story ideas to help them get started. Their work was then evaluated by themselves and 600 other human reviewers.(他们还被分成另外三组:第一组没有得到人工智能的帮助,第二组从ChatGPT那里得到了一个三句话的故事创意,第三组可以得到多达五个人工智能生成的故事创意来帮助他们开始。然后,他们的工作由他们自己和其他600名人类评论者进行评估)”和第四段中“The authors found that, on average, AI improved the quality of an individual writer’s creativity by up to 10 percent and the story’s enjoyability by 22 percent, helping particularly with elements like structure and plot twists (转折).(作者发现,平均而言,人工智能将单个作家的创造力提高了10%,将故事的趣味性提高了22%,尤其是在结构和情节转折等元素上)”可推知,研究人员测试非专业作家是为了研究人工智能对创造力的影响。
根据第五段中“However, on a collective level, AI-assisted stories were much more similar to each other than those produced without any AI help, as writers “attached” themselves too heavily to the ideas suggested by AI.(然而,从整体层面来看,人工智能辅助创作的故事比完全由人类独立创作的故事相似度更高,因为写作者过于依赖人工智能建议的构思)”可知,从整体层面来看,人工智能辅助创作的故事相似度更高,缺乏新颖性,所以人工智能辅助降低了整体的新颖性。
根据最后一段中“People need to start thinking about “where in my workflow can I use this tool to get the most benefit, while still incorporating my own voice into the project or outcome,” study co-author Anil Doshi of University College London said.(伦敦大学学院的研究合著者Anil Doshi表示,人们需要开始思考“在我的工作流程中,哪里可以使用这个工具来获得最大的好处,同时仍然将我自己的想法融入到项目或结果中。”)”
通读全文,结合第一段中“Books and movies of the future might all start to feel the same if creative industries accepted artificial intelligence (AI) to help write stories, a new study warns.(一项新的研究警告说,如果创意产业接受人工智能(AI)来帮助编写故事,未来的书籍和电影可能都会开始变得千篇一律)”可知,文章主要探讨了人工智能在协助写作时对创造力的影响,发现人工智能在提升个体创作质量的同时,也可能导致作品趋同,减少整体新颖性,故D项“AI’s Creativity Trade-off: Gain vs. Uniformity(人工智能的创造力权衡:获益与趋同之困)”最能概括文章内容,适合作文章标题。
This year, I received an exciting message from the Science Center: out of nearly 2,000 applicants, only 40 high school students were selected to take part in their famous summer program, and I was one of them! ____16____.
For the two-week summer program, I chose to focus on a biology project. My research centered on investigating the presence and impact of bacteria (细菌) in different water sources — specifically comparing wild lake water with home pool water to determine which was more harmful. ____17____. Those are two fields I’m deeply passionate about.
The laboratory work was challenging but extremely rewarding. I remember the first day I set out to collect water samples. The lake was peaceful, but beneath that calm surface hid something far less harmless. In contrast, the pool’s crystal-clear water seemed almost too clean, and I wondered how the tests would turn out.
____18____. The process involved culturing the bacteria, monitoring their growth and comparing the results from both sources. When the data finally came in, it was both shocking and enlightening. The pool water was surprisingly clean, with hardly any bacteria present. On the other hand, the lake water, despite its beautiful appearance, was full of bacteria — definitely not safe for drinking. ____19____.
Once my experiments were complete, I poured all my energy into writing a detailed report. On the last day of the program, I had the opportunity to present my work to a group of 15 mentors (导师). ____20____ — I was not just a student; I was like a scientist sharing my discoveries with the world.
A. Back in the lab, I analyzed the samples
B. Standing before them, explaining my project, I felt proud
C. I hope to undertake a biomedical project at the Science Center
D. My time at the Science Center has given me a clear sense of purpose
E. These results highlighted the hidden dangers that untreated water can pose
F. The moment I opened that letter, I knew this was going to be a life-changing experience
G. This topic interested me because it combined both environmental science and public health
F 17. G 18. A 19. E 20. B
前文“This year, I received an exciting message from the Science Center: out of nearly 2,000 applicants, only 40 high school students were selected to take part in their famous summer program, and I was one of them!
前文“My research centered on investigating the presence and impact of bacteria (细菌) in different water sources — specifically comparing wild lake water with home pool water to determine which was more harmful. (我的研究聚焦于检测不同水源中细菌的存在及其影响——通过对比天然湖泊水和家用泳池水,分析哪一类水源的危害性更大)”提到“我”研究不同水源中的细菌,后文“Those are two fields I’m deeply passionate about. (这两个领域正是我深深热爱的研究方向)”强调“我”热爱这两个领域,因此G项“This topic interested me because it combined both environmental science and public health (这个课题吸引我,因为它结合了环境科学和公共卫生)”符合语境,解释“我”选择该课题的动机,承前启后,其中的“environmental science and public health”是后文的“two fields”所指的对象。故选G。
前一段落主要描述“我”外出采集水样的过程,后文“The process involved culturing the bacteria, monitoring their growth and comparing the results from both sources. When the data finally came in, it was both shocking and enlightening. (实验过程包括培养细菌、监测其生长状况,并对两种水源的检测结果进行对比分析。当最终数据出炉时,结果既令人震惊又发人深省)”说明实验过程以及数据结果,因此A项“Back in the lab, I analyzed the samples (回到实验室后,我分析了样本)”符合语境,指出回到实验室的工作,作为实验阶段的起始句,自然过渡到具体操作。故选A。
前文“The pool water was surprisingly clean, with hardly any bacteria present. On the other hand, the lake water, despite its beautiful appearance, was full of bacteria — definitely not safe for drinking. (泳池水样异常洁净,几乎检测不到细菌存在。另一方面,看似清澈的湖水却含有大量细菌——显然达不到饮用水安全标准)”对比了泳池水和湖水的细菌检测结果,因此E项“These results highlighted the hidden dangers that untreated water can pose (这些结果凸显了未经处理水源的潜在危害)”符合语境,总结实验发现,承接前文。故选E。
【20题详解】
前文“On the last day of the program, I had the opportunity to present my work to a group of 15 mentors (导师). (在项目的最后一天,我有幸向15位导师组成的专家组汇报了我的研究成果)”提到“我”向导师展示报告,后文“I was not just a student; I was like a scientist sharing my discoveries with the world. (此时的我已不仅是一名学生,而更像是向世界分享发现的科学家)”升华“我”的感受,因此B项“Standing before them, explaining my project, I felt proud (站在他们面前讲解项目时,我感到自豪)”符合语境,描述“我”汇报时的感受,其中的“proud”与后文的“not just a student”和“a scientist sharing my discoveries with the world”呼应。故选B。

Thank you for your letter! I’m thrilled to share my trip to Guilin — a place known as “China’s natural masterpiece.”
Last summer, my family and I spent two days exploring Guilin’s wonders. On the first day, we cruised along the Li River, surrounded by mist-covered karst hills. The highlight was watching the Impression Sanjie Liu light show against a backdrop of mountains.

Every time we went to Lehman’s store, I would rush straight to the same shelf. There it was: a brown little guy with a large nose that fit perfectly over my shoulder. I hugged the brown stuffed aardvark (土豚) doll tightly and whispered, “Hi, Artie.”
Last week, my mother finally noticed. “Why do you always disappear?” she asked at checkout. “Next time, your brother is going with you.”
Oh, no! My brother, Rich, was going to accompany me into the store. He would watch me and report everything to our mother.
Anyway, I wasn’t going to give up seeing my precious Artie. So, when Rich and I walked into the store together, I advised him to get the daily groceries, since he was older. He agreed but said I shouldn’t go off to look at the cosmetics (化妆品), as I wasn’t allowed to wear them yet.
He needn’t have worried about that; I was already heading toward Artie. There it was, awaiting me. I grabbed it and hugged it tightly. Just then, I heard my brother: “What in the world are you doing?”
“This is Artie,” I said. “I hug it every single time I come here. Don’t tell Mom. I know we can’t afford it, and I hope it doesn’t get sold, because I just love this little guy.”
The look on Rich’s face was unreadable, but I knew deep down that he wasn’t going to make fun of me. In fact, a few times when he accompanied me to the store, he said, “Go on and hug your ugly animal, if it’s still there, and I’ll get the groceries.”
One day before Thanksgiving Day, Rich was working with Dad somewhere, so Mom took me to Lehman’s but waited outside. “You go in by yourself,” she said. “My legs are tired today. Just don’t take forever, okay?”
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
I rushed straight to Artie’s shelf, but it was gone.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
On Thanksgiving Day, as we were allowed to open one present, Rich walked up.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I rushed straight to Artie’s shelf, but it was gone. My heart dropped and panic surged through me. I searched up and down each aisle, my hopes fading with every empty spot. A kind clerk who noticed my distress said gently, “That aardvark doll was sold yesterday.” Tears blurred my vision. How could Artie be gone? Heartbroken, I stumbled out of the store, forcing a smile to Mom who was waiting for me outside. “Is everything alright?” Mom asked. “Nothing much,” I mumbled, hiding my trembling lip.
On Thanksgiving Day, as we were allowed to open one present, Rich walked up. He held out a small, clumsily wrapped box. “It’s for you,” he whispered. With surprise and curiosity, I carefully unwrapped it, and there lay Artie! I gasped, speechless with emotion. Rich grinned, “I bought him with all my savings. Now he’s yours forever.” Overwhelmed with joy, I hugged him tightly, with tears streaming down my cheeks. It wasn’t just a stuffed aardvark doll, but a gift of pure love from my family. It was the best Thanksgiving gift forever.

C. To organize a festive community event for October.
D. To provide a project management experience for teens.
5. How did Socktober achieve massive growth after 2013?
A Montague organized national fundraising events.
B. Montague placed an advertisement to promote it.
C. Montague hired influencers to post about it.
D. Montague produced an online video to spread it.
6. What value does Anderson Brown connect to Socktober?
A. Promoting educational equality. B. Encouraging youth leadership.
C. Showing care for everybody. D. Supporting local businesses.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Socktober?

A To train future writers.
Uniformity

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
