JULY 1st
I can’t believe it! My vacation was ruined (毁了). My parents said I should play outside, make new friends and try different things. They signed me up for a music camp. Help!
JULY 4th
Today was my first day. I didn’t know this camp was for classical music! I don’t know anything about it! I only know about electronic music.
JULY 14th
This was the worst day of my life! I tried all the instruments, but I was not good at any of them. When I tried the violin, the noise I made sounded like a crying cat! My new friend John told me that it takes time and a lot of patience to learn an instrument.
JULY 28th
What busy two weeks—no time to write! We practice every day, even on weekends. It’s really fun. My friends are really good at playing music. They are not bored at all! One kid even gave me a piano lesson. I showed him how to do some simple remixing (合成). I actually started enjoying the beauty of classical music.
JULY 29th
Today was our final performance for the parents in the hall. When we finished playing, everyone stood up, clapping (鼓掌) and cheering. Maybe we should try something new, and it might turn out better than we expected.
39. Why did the writer’s parents sign him up for a music camp?
A. Because his parents wanted him to try different things.
B. Because he needed to learn music.
C. Because he wanted to have a different vacation.
D. Because he liked music.

Many birds today use human rubbish to build their nests (鸟巢). Is it helpful or harmful for birds to use rubbish for nests? You will find the answer in some studies.
Birds are building their nests with rubbish, said a new study. The rubbish includes cigarette butts (烟头) and plastic bags. A group of European scientists looked into about 35,000 studies on bird nests. They found that birds have used man-made things in nests almost everywhere on Earth.
Some rubbish seems to be helpful. This is why birds “like” putting it in their nests. For example, cigarette butts have some chemicals, so they can keep insects away and protect the baby birds. Plastic bags are useful in keeping the animals warm, and other hard things, such as paper cards, can make nests stronger.
However, in the end, human rubbish may only bring more harm to birds. The toxic (有毒的) chemicals in cigarettes hurt the baby birds. The babies may get sick or have shorter lives, according to a study. To make matters worse, if the cigarette still burns when the bird brings it back to its home, it may set fire to the nest. Pieces of fishing net may also trap birds, and it’s impossible for them to get out by themselves. If the babies eat other kinds of rubbish by accident, they will also get hurt.
Our friends in the air are feeling the bad effects of humans polluting the environment.
42. Cigarette butts can help birds ________.
A. make nests stronger B. burn other harmful rubbish
C. stop insects from getting close D. live better with others
43. What does the underlined word “trap” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. 攻击 B. 缠住 C. 放飞 D. 批评
44. What’s the writer’s opinion about bird nests with rubbish?
A. It hurts more than it helps. B. Human rubbish can help animals.
C. It’s a way to improve the environment. D. It is quite helpful to the birds.
45. What’s the correct structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
D
I once travelled across China. As a chef (厨师), I really felt at home in this place and realized that its variety of food is as wide as its land.
In Beijing, I took to eating Beijing Roast Duck. The barbecue gives it that famous smoky taste. Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, the tender and juicy duck goes well with the pancakes and the sweet sauce. People say that when in Rome, do as the Romans do. Table manners are no exception. I had to hold chopsticks instead of a knife and fork while eating.
In Shandong, I came across Four-Joy Meatballs in a wedding feast. The large round meatball is steamed through to keep its original flavor. Slightly rough and brown outside but incredibly soft inside, it melts in the mouth. I didn’t think anything could beat my tender bacon until I met it!
When it comes to something spicy (辣的), what else but Chongqing hot pot! There is nothing that a hot pot can’t fix, so no tour of China is complete without trying a hot pot. In the restaurant I chose, there were so many customers eating that there was not enough room to swing a cat. I have to say my mouth was on fire but I just couldn’t stop!
As well as a burning mouth, I was left with a full stomach, some lovely memories, and a wider understanding of the tastes of China.
46 What do Beijing Roast Duck and Four-Joy Meatballs have in common?
A. They adopt the same cooking method. B. They’re served with dipping sauce.
C. They are crispy outside and soft inside. D. Their flavors defeat tender bacon.
47. What does the writer think of Chinese food?
A. Terrible. B. Tasty. C. Salty. D. Awful.
48. Where is the text most probably taken from?
A. An online food review. B. A restaurant guide.
C. A Chinese recipe. D. A travel journal.
E
Fights at school sometimes happen. But how can you keep away from a fight? Here’s something you can do.
Be calm. Sometimes, you feel so angry that you really want to teach somebody a lesson. But being angry can’t solve problems. Neither can a fight. Instead, it may bring you more problems. In the school, everyone involved (卷入) in a fight will be punished, no matter who started it. There are no winners in a fight.
Shout loudly. If you know someone is coming up behind you to attack, turn toward the person with your hands up in front of your body and loudly say “stop” before walking away. Loud voice can usually make the attacker calm down. If the person doesn’t stop, cry for help by calling out the name of a teacher whose office is nearby.
Learn to refuse. Your friend may ask you to join in a fight. Learn to say no. Helping him fight is not really helpful to him. If you really want to give him a hand, try to ask him to give it up. Also, you can tell him if he gets involved in a fight, he may get hurt and be punished. Then, try to learn why he wants a fight and help him find a right way to deal with the problem.
49. How many pieces of advice does the writer give us?
A. 2. B. 3. C. 4. D. 5.
50. What does the underlined word “attack” in Paragraph 3 mean in Chinese?
A. 拥抱 B. 吸引 C. 阻止 D. 攻击
51. What should you do if you really want to solve problems?
A. Keep calm. B. Feel angry. C. Have a fight. D. Shout loudly.
52. Where may the passage come from?
A. A travel guide. B. A weather report. C. A magazine. D. A storybook.

Dear Julia,
I’m glad to receive your email. You may feel nervous to stay at home alone for the first time. But don’t worry. I’d like to share something helpful with you.
First, stay safe by locking the doors and never letting strangers in. Also, keep important phone numbers handy.
Second, manage your time well by making a schedule for study and rest. Study hard and also take timely breaks. Don’t stay up late, as staying up late is bad for your health. When your parents are not at home, make sure to eat healthily.
Besides, do some housework, such as cleaning and washing clothes. This will show your parents that you’re responsible. They will be proud of you.
I hope my advice is helpful to you and that you can look after yourself well when staying at home alone!
Yours,
Li Hui
