UK kids play ‘conkers’
“Conkers” is a children’s game in the UK. For the last 150 years, British children have collected (收集) the nuts of the horse chestnut tree (马栗树) in September and October. They use these “conkers” to play a game.
You need two players, two conkers and two pieces of string (绳子) about 20 cm long. Each player cuts a hole (洞) in the middle of their conker and pulls a piece of string through the hole. The idea is to find the strongest (最硬的) conker.
One player holds up their string with the conker at the bottom. The other player then hits the first player’s conker as hard as he or she can. Then the first player does the same to the other player.
They keep doing this until one conker breaks(破碎). The strongest conker has won one game, so it is called a “one-er”. If a “one-er” wins another game, it becomes a “two-er” and soon.
Some schools have stopped children from playing conkers because they think the game can be dangerous. Now there are online conkers games, but they are not as good as the real thing!
回答下面5个问题,每题答案不超过6个词。

It was not long before Toad saw a motor car by the side of the road outside a house. There was no one in it, so he jumped in, started the engine, and drove off.
“Toot! Toot!” he shouted.
When the owner of the car came out of the house, he saw that his car was gone. He immediately called the police.
“Someone stole (偷) my car,” he said. “I think it was Toad.”
Toad tried to drive away, but the policeman stood in front of the car. Toad called him “Fat Face” and drove over the policeman’s foot. This made him angry. He shouted to help, and more policemen came. They took Toad to the police station. The next day, Toad stood in court before a judge (法官).
“This Toad,” one of the policemen said to the judge, “has stolen a car. And what’s worse, he drove it over my foot. And even more serious, he called me ‘Fat Face’.”
“That is very serious,” the judge said. “It is bad enough to steal a car. It is even worse to drive it over a policeman’s foot. But to call a policeman ‘Fat Face’ is the worst possible thing to do. I feel quite sick. What do you have to say for yourself, Toad?”
“I didn’t mean to steal the car,” Toad said. “I only wanted to borrow it. I wasn’t thinking, you see. I had been ill.”
Rat stood up and said, “That’s true, Judge. He has been ill.”
“My friends Mole, Rat, and Badger had been looking after me. I went out for a walk and saw this beautiful car. No one was looking after it, so I thought, this car needs looking after. So I looked after it.”

When I was six years old, Grandpa sent me into the forest to gather pecans (山核桃). Picking up pecans was quite difficult for me and my little basket was only half full. Just then, something caught my eyes. A large squirrel (松鼠) was a few feet away. I watched when he picked up a pecan, ran to a tree and put it in a hole in the tree. A moment later, he jumped out and climbed down to the ground to pick up another nut. Once again, he took the pecan back to his hole in the tree.
I ran to the tree and looked into the hole. It was filled with pecans! So many pecans! After taking the squirrel’s pecans, my basket became full. I was proud so I couldn’t wait to show Grandpa all the pecans. He looked into the basket and said, “Well, how did you find so many?” I told him the truth.
Grandpa congratulated me on how smart I’d been in watching the squirrel and his habits. Then he did something that surprised me. He gave the basket back to me and put his arm gently around my shoulders (肩膀).
“That squirrel worked very hard to get his winter food,” he said, “Now that all of his pecans are gone, don’t you think that little squirrel will survive (存活) the cold winter?”
“I didn’t think about that.” I said.
“I know,” said Grandpa, “Now it’s time for you to think about what you should do.”

1.When can the children play conkers?

Your schooldays should be some of the best and happiest days of your life. How can you get the most from them, and make sure (确保) you do not waste (浪费) time to learn.
Be active (积极的) at school!
Don’t say things are difficult. Be interested in school-life. Put your hands up quickly in class. You can often go around the school with a big smile. If you don’t work, you will waste your time at school. Teachers can not make everything enjoyable.
Keep fit.
If you do not eat a good breakfast, you will be thinking about food in class. Sometimes you go to bed late and you may feel tired in class the next day. Play enough sports every day to keep your body strong. At weekends, get together with your friends and you can make your life colourful.(丰富多彩的)
Face (面对) the problem.
Do not say you will do things tomorrow. If you get behind the class, it is very difficult to get back in front. When you have some bad days, don’t forget (忘记) to ask your teachers and friends for help. You are young. No one thinks you must do everything quite well!
