The Last Leaf
At the top of the house, Sue and Johnsy had their own painting room where they worked together. In November, Johnsy became very ill, and was lying in her bed and looking through the window at the wall of the next house.
“Her only chance,” the doctor said, “is for her to want to live.”
After the doctor had gone, Sue came into Johnsy’s room. Johnsy was looking out of the window and counting.
“Six,” said Johnsy, “There goes another one. There are only five leaves left now.”
“Five what, dear?”
“Leaves, on the ivy vine (常春藤). When the last one falls, I’ll die.”
“Johnsy, dear,” said Sue, “try to sleep. I must go and ask Behrman to be my model.”
Old Behrman was a painter, who lived downstairs. He was past 60 and made a little money by being a model. He always wanted to paint a great work, but never began it. Behrman saw himself as a guard to protect the two young artists in the painting room upstairs.
Sue found Behrman and told him what Johnsy had said.
“What a foolish idea! I have never heard that people will die because of a falling leaf. Poor Johnsy!” After saying that, they went upstairs. They looked out of the window at the ivy vine. A cold rain was falling.
The next morning, there stood one ivy leaf.
“It’s the last one,” said Johnsy, “it will fall today, and I’ll die.”
At night, the wind began to blow. The next morning, the leaf was still there.
“Something has made that last leaf stay there. It’s wrong to want to die,” said Johnsy to Sue, “please bring me a little soup now.”
The next day the doctor said to Sue, “She’s out of danger. You won. Nutrition (营养) and care now—that’s all.”
That afternoon, Sue came to the bed where Johnsy lay.
“I have something to tell you,” she said, “Mr. Behrman died today. He was ill for only two days. His shoes and clothing were wet through and icy cold. We couldn’t imagine where he had been on such a terrible night. Look out of the window! Oh, dear, look at the last ivy leaf on the wall. Didn’t you wonder why it never moved when the wind blew? Ah, darling,…”
(Adapted from The Last Leaf by O.Henry)
8.In the first paragraph, who was seriously ill?
A.Sue B.Johnsy C.Behrman D.The doctor
9.Why didn’t the last ivy leaf fall after the rainy and windy days?

C.Because the wind wasn’t strong. D.Because it was tied to the tree.
10.The last leaf means for Johnsy.
A.courage B.fear C.hope D.pride
11.According to the passage, we can infer that
A.Sue asked Behrman to paint the last leaf on the ivy vine.
B.Behrman was an old painter who made a lot by being a model.

D.Behrman was a kind and great artist who painted the last leaf.

①Does a lake on fire sound impossible? If you think that water can’t burn, you need to learn more about pollution.
②Let’s go and see Bellandur Lake in the city of Bengaluru in India. Bengaluru is the center for many heavy industries. Electrical and electronic goods, computer parts and parts for planes and space rockets are produced there. Much of the waste from these and a large amount of the wastewater from local people run into the lake.
③These harmful mixed things have led the lake to become covered with a thick white foam (泡沫) that looks like snow when seen from far away. When the level of the water rises, the foam does too and covers nearby areas, even roads. When a fire breaks out on the lake, it is both frightening and dangerous. People who live or work near the lake also get seriously ill because of the pollution.
④The fire has drawn a great deal of attention recently, but burning lakes are nothing new. Pollution mainly happens in developing countries like India today. In the past, it mainly took place in Europe and America. Cuyahoga River, a river in America, had caught fire at least 13 times. The fire that caused the most attention was in 1969 when oil-covered areas on the river were set on fire by sparks (火花) from a passing train. The fire reached a height of over five floors and burned for about half an hour. By that time, people in America were more aware of its dangers and wanted to change.
⑤As a result, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was founded in1970 and the Clean Water Act (1972) was put into use. This Act required all rivers throughout America be clean enough to safely allow swimmers and fish to pass through by 1983. Due to these efforts, the Cuyahoga River has never had another fire and over 60 different species of fish live in the river.
⑥If history is a guide, will it be possible for people in India to bring an end to the pollution by changing the laws in their country, too? Like many nations, it’s necessary to raise awareness of environmental protection among the general public. All of us must act!
12.According to the passage, lakes can catch fire mainly because of ________.
A.the rise of water level B.sparks set by a passing train
C.fire from nearby woods D.pollution from heavy industries
13.The example of Cuyahoga River in Paragraphs 4&5 is used to ________ to solve the problem.
A.show one possible way B.describe another serious fire
C.bring Environmental result D.show the worldwide pollution
14.The underlined words “its dangers” refer to the dangers of “________”.
A.sparks B.pollution C.foam D.snow
15.The structure (结构) of the passage might be ________.
A. B. C. D.
【答案】12.D 13.A 14.B 15.D
【导语】本文主要讲述了因为大量的污染物进入湖泊导致湖泊燃烧,并举例美国凯霍加河说明人类应该采取措施防止河流污染,也希望其他国家能采取相应的措施,提高环保意识。
12.推理判断题。根据“Much of the waste from these and a large amount of the wastewater from local people run into the lake.”
故选A。
14.推理判断题。根据“The fire reached a height of over five floors and burned for about half an hour. By that time, people in America were more aware of its dangers and wanted to change.”

How can we become good English learners?
Dear younger sisters and brothers, as we all know, English is one of the most widely used languages in the world. How can we learn it well? Here is my advice.
First of all, you should often listen to the tapes, English songs and programs. You may find it difficult at first. Don’t worry. It takes time. Second, it is a good way to speak English in class as much as possible. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. The more you speak, the fewer mistakes you’ll make. You’d better join the English club and practice with others. Third, another way is reading English newspapers and magazines. How useful it is! As for writing, why not recite some good passages and keep a diary? As the saying goes, “Practice makes perfect.”
In a word, as long as we do more listening, speaking, reading and writing, we will become good English learners.
