I saw her at the play and because of her invitation, I sat beside her. “Do you remember the first time I saw you? You asked me to have lunch.” she asked.
Did I remember?
It was twenty years ago. I was living in a tiny flat and making little money.
After reading my book, she wrote to ask if I’d have a chat with her and give her a lunch at Foyot’s. Foyot’s was such an expensive restaurant that I never went there before, but I had £80 and a lunch shouldn’t cost over £15. So I agreed.
Still, I was shocked to see the prices. They were much higher than I expected, but her words comforted me, “I never eat more than one thing for lunch.”
“Don’t say that!” I answered generously (慷慨地).
“I never eat more than one thing, except a little salmon (三文鱼)” Well, a beautiful salmon just came in Foyot’s. I ordered it for my guest. And the waiter asked if she’d have something else.
“No, I never eat more than one thing, unless you had caviar (鱼子酱),” My heart sank (下沉), but I told the waiter to bring it. For myself, I chose the cheapest dish.
She talked happily while I was wondering whether I had enough money to pay the bill. If no, it’d be awful to borrow from my guest, and I’d say my money was stolen. It’d be worse if she had no enough money either. Then I had to leave my watch here.
She finished eating. “Coffee?” I asked. “No more than one thing, except ice cream and coffee.” I didn’t care now, ordering one for her and another for myself. Then a terrible thing happened. The waiter came with huge peaches, and my guest took one.
At last, the bill came. I knew she thought me mean (吝啬的) when I left only £3 for the waiter as the tip. and there was nothing in my pocket.
“Follow my example,” she said as we left. “Never eat more than one thing for lunch.”
“I’ll do better,” I replied. “I’ll eat nothing for dinner tonight.”
“Humorous!” she cried, jumping into a taxi.
I had my revenge (报仇). Today she weighed 294 pounds.
4. Why did the writer have lunch with the woman twenty years ago?
A. The woman asked for lunch. B. They wanted to talk about the play.
C. They hadn’t met for a long time. D. He wanted to try Foyot’s food with her.
5. How did the writer feel when ordering food?
A. He felt the food in Foyot’s was awful.
B. He felt terrible that his money was stolen.
C. He was not sure whether the woman liked the food.
D. He worried about the bill but didn’t want to lose face.
6. Why did the woman repeat saying “I never eat more than one thing.”?
A. Because she planned to lose weight. B. Because she’d like to show her simple life.
C. Because she wanted to eat more expensive food. D. Because she knew how to keep a healthy diet.
7. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The writer enjoyed the lunch a lot with the woman.
B. The woman repeated having meals like this for 20 years.
C. The writer learned from the woman to eat less for meals.
D. The woman felt sorry as the lunch cost all the writer’s money.

根据第四段“After reading my book, she wrote to ask if I’d have a chat with her and give her a lunch at Foyot’s.(读完我的书后,她写信询问是否能与我聊聊,并请我到福约特餐厅请她吃顿午餐)”可知,作者二十年前和那位女士一起吃午饭是因为那位女士主动提出要一起吃午饭。故选A。
根据第九段“She talked happily while I was wondering whether I had enough money to pay the bill. If no, it’d be awful to borrow from my guest, and I’d say my money was stolen. It’d be worse if she had no enough money either. Then I had to leave my watch here.(她兴致勃勃地交谈着,而我却在心里暗自担心自己是否有足够的钱来支付账单。要是没有的话,向我的客人借钱又太不妥了,那样我会说自己的钱被人偷走了。要是她自己也没有足够的钱的话,情况就更糟了。于是,我只好把我的手表留在这里)”可知,作者在点餐时担心账单的问题,但又不想丢面子。故选D。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第七段““No, I never eat more than one thing, unless you had caviar (鱼子酱),” My heart sank (下沉), but I told the waiter to bring it. For myself, I chose the cheapest dish.(“不,我每次只吃一种食物,除非是鱼子酱那种高级的。”我的心情顿时沉重起来,但还是吩咐服务员把那道菜上来了。至于我自己,我选择了最便宜的一道菜)”以及第十段“She finished eating. “Coffee?” I asked. “No more than one thing, except ice cream and coffee.”(她吃完饭了。“要咖啡吗?”我问道。“除了冰淇淋和咖啡,我只吃一样东西。”)”可知,女士反复说“午餐从不多吃一样东西”,却接连以“除了三文鱼”、“除非有鱼子酱”、“除了冰淇淋和咖啡”为借口,让作者点更贵的食物,本质是想用看似“节制”的说法掩盖想吃昂贵食物的目的。故选C。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“I had my revenge (报仇). Today she weighed 294 pounds.(我终于报了仇。今天她的体重是294磅)”结合二十年前她午餐时不断找借口吃多种高价食物的行为,可推断她二十年来一直保持这样“说少吃却实际多吃昂贵食物”的习惯,最终导致体重超标。故可知,这位女士像这样用餐的习惯已经持续了20年。故选B。

We often hear honesty is the best policy, and no one likes to be called a liar. But is dishonesty always wrong? Not necessarily.
According to psychologists, there are two types of lies: lies that help your relationships and the people around you are called prosocial lies; and lies that hurt them are called antisocial lies.
How often have you clicked “Like” on Wechat Moment, not because you actually like what your friends posted, but because you want to show your support? This white lie is an example of a prosocial lie. But when people tell lies on social networks to make their own lives seem more exciting,or to make others jealous, this is antisocial lying.
Workplace lies range from harmless lies to destructive untruthful statements. An example of a prosocial workplace lie is complimenting someone on their presentation — even though it was only average — because you know they were nervous beforehand. In this case your intention is simply to protect your colleague’s feelings. However, people sometimes tell bigger lies at work for the purpose of avoiding blame or to stay on the boss’s good side. These are antisocial lies. They are antisocial because your boss is likely to discover the truth and as a result, will probably stop trusting you.
Lying is also a significant part of the natural world. So it’s little wonder we resort to it almost reflexively. Human babies sometimes pretend to cry, check to see if anyone is listening, and then start crying again. By the age of five, children learn to say things that are completely untrue, and most nine-yearolds have mastered keeping secrets to protect themselves.
Lying can be incredibly harmful to our relationships and to the people around us. But that’s only true for antisocial lies. Prosocial lies have the opposite effect — they can actually help us.
8. What may help us tell a prosocial lie from an antisocial lie?
A. The purpose it serves. B. The way it is told.
C. The occasion where it is told. D. The people it is told to.
9. Which statement is supported by the passage?
A. We usually tell prosocial lies to protect our own feelings.
B. Lying always hurts both the liar and the person being lied to.
C. Lying on social media is prosocial, but facetoface lying isn’t.
D. Sometimes, making people feel good benefits more than telling the absolute truth.
10. Which might be the best title of the passage?
A. Lies That Harm Us B. Lying is A Second Nature
C. Lies That We Need to Tell D. Honesty is the Best Policy
根据第二段“According to psychologists, there are two types of lies:lies that help your relationships and the people around you are called prosocial lies; and lies that hurt them are called antisocial lies.”(心理学家认为,有两种类型的谎言:有助于人际关系和周围人的谎言被称为亲社交谎言;伤害他们的谎言被称为反社交谎言)可知,辨别谎言的意图能够帮助我们区分亲社交谎言和反社交谎言,故选A。
根据第四段“An example of a prosocial workplace lie is complimenting someone on their presentation — even though it was only average — because you know they were nervous beforehand. In this case your intention is simply to protect your colleague’s feelings.”(一个有利于社交的职场谎言的例子是称赞某人的演讲,尽管这只是一般水平,因为你知道他们在演讲之前很紧张。
通读全文,特别是根据第一段“But is dishonesty always wrong? Not necessarily.”(但是不诚实总是错误的吗?不一定)以及最后一段“Lying can be incredibly harmful to our relationships and to the people around us. But that’s only true for antisocial lies. Prosocial lies have the opposite effect—they can actually help us.”(撒谎会对我们的人际关系和周围的人造成极大的伤害。
D
We know that reading is good for children and for adults as well. Now a new study suggests that just being around books has its benefits — even if you don’t read them a lot. A team of researchers in Australia finds that growing up in a home with a sizable library improves literacy, number sense and even technological knowledge in later life.
The researchers were interested in what is called the “Radiation Effect”. “Radiation Effect” is a situation where children grow up around books, even though they don’t read them as much as their parents would like them to. But somehow books benefit them.
Joanna Sikora, a sociologist at the Australian National University, and her colleagues studied data collected between 2011 and 2015. The survey tested more than 160,000 adults from 31 different societies, and it included a question about how many books testers had in their homes during adolescence
“We found that people who grew up around books had better literacy, numeracy and digital problem-solving skills than people who had fewer books growing up but had similar education levels, similar jobs and even similar adult habits.” In fact, teens who only made it through high school but were raised in a bookish environment were successful as well in adulthood as college graduates who grew up in a house lacking books.
“So if we grow up in a house, in a home where parents enjoy books, where books are given as birthday presents and cherished and valued, this is something that becomes a part of our identity and gives us this lifelong influence to improve our reading and writing ability.” said Sikora.
So keep those shelves filled with books. Your kids will not only be grateful, they’ll be more likely to be able to spell grateful correctly as well.
11. Which is the benefit for children being around books?
A. They will work with numbers well. B. They will have a big library at home.
C. They will fall in love with literature. D. They will form the habit of reading a lot.
12. The “Radiation Effect” might work for_________.
A. a girl who doesn't read books B. a boy who receives higher education
C. a girl who visits bookstores a lot D. a boy who grows up without books
13. What do we know from paragraph 4?
A. College graduates raised without books are surely not successful.
B. Teens, after graduating from high schools, can find better jobs.
C. People raised in a bookish environment can solve real-life problems easily.
D. Children being around books can be successful in adulthood.
14. What are parents advised to do?
A. To have a big collection of books. B. To keep shelves filled with dictionaries.
C. To enjoy writing books for children. D. To make kids spell grateful correctly.
A 12. C 13. D 14. A

A We usually tell prosocial lies to protect our own feelings.
