Takosangba Pongen had his sight for 14 years. He has been blind for the past 14. But in front of a piano, nobody can tell.
Pongen said, “After losing my sight, music has been one thing that has kept me alive. It opened a window to see the world. It gives me energy and hope to go forward.” Recently, he performed at the Brillante Piano Festival in Bengaluru, the capital of the southern Indian state of Karnataka.
Pongen plays by ear. He taught himself to play, with the help of training videos on a website, which he began in 2020. He said he would like to be a professional musician someday. But finding a place that teaches the blind has been a challenge.
Pongen first noticed his sight problems at school. He couldn’t read what his teacher was writing on the blackboard. Then he recalled having difficulty seeing small glass marbles as he played with his sister. The problems were worsened by the surgery. By 14, he was blind.
Pongen said that he sometimes wishes he could see, but after all these years, he has accepted his condition as it is. He believes he is meant to serve as a model to inspire and motivate others. “If a blind man can do it, why can’t others who are fully able?” he said.
Festival organizers said they “believe in the power of music as an agent of social development”. Pongen is a part of their “Specially Abled Musicians” program. He played Nocturne in B Flat Minor by Frédéric Chopin. Pongen said Chopin is his favorite classical composer (作曲家). “I love music that is expressive and emotional,” he said.
The nervousness returned as his performance time arrived. He took a deep breath to calm himself down. Then his sister guided him onto the stage and seated him in front of the piano. From there, he played beautifully.

Sixteen humanoid robots from Chinese robotics company Unitree recently captivated audiences with an impressive dance performance.
At the annual Spring Festival Gala, the robots performed the traditional Yangge dance, a folk art from northeast China, in perfect time with human dancers. According to Chinese media outlets, the robots’ amazing skill with handkerchiefs—a crucial component of the dance—was the high point as they spun and launched themselves into the air with precise arm movements. The performance leaves a lasting impression by showcasing the ideal fusion (融合) of modern technology and cultural heritage.
The Spring Festival Gala performance was directed by renowned Chinese director Zhang Yimou and brought together 16 humanoid robots alongside dancers from the Xinjiang Art Institute. The robots performed the exuberant (喜气洋洋的) Yangge dance, a cherished folk practice, while wearing traditional flowery padded jackets from northeastern China. These robots showed incredible agility (敏捷) by precisely spinning handkerchiefs, imitating human leg-kicking motions, and smoothly rotating their waists.
According to Unitree, the performance highlighted not only technological advancements but also the beauty of Chinese traditions, showcasing the potential of robotics in modern cultural expressions. The Unitree H1 robots can generate a maximum joint torque (扭矩) of 360 N·m because of their sophisticated AI-driven full-body motion control technology. They can sense and adjust to their environment in real time thanks to their 360° panoramic depth awareness, which guarantees fluid and well-coordinated movements. Additionally, the robots “understand” music using AI algorithms, modifying their movements to follow the beat and rhythm fluidly.
Unitree’s new open-source full-body dataset enables its H1, H1-2, and G-1 humanoid robots to move more naturally—even dancing like humans. These realistic motions are shown in a recently published video that was recorded with LAFAN1 motion capture technology. The dataset offers improved mobility capabilities and is compatible with all major Unitree robot models.
Unitree thinks that this dataset can stimulate more robotics innovation. The dataset is freely available for download from Unitree’s dedicated page, giving academics and enthusiasts a convenient way to enhance and broaden the capabilities of humanoid robots.

Even as temperatures kept dropping in northeastern China’s “ice city” of Harbin, the excitement rose among a group of swimmers who enjoy jumping into freezing waters. The daily event, known as ice swimming, is a winter tradition in Harbin. The swimmers trained daily throughout the year to get their bodies ready for the unusual swim.
They first carved out a pool in the Songhua River, breaking the 10-centimeter-thick layer of ice and scooping out the pieces. Then they took off their thick clothes and prepared to enter. One by one, they jumped into the freezing, 10-meter-long pool. Some of the swimmers said that their legs and arms quickly went numb after entering the water. The outside temperature was about minus 13 degrees Celsius, and the water temperature remained near freezing.
One of the swimmers was Chen Xia. She came from Zhejiang province about 1,700 kilometers to the south. She dived into the river even though she had a cold. She has been taking part in the activity for about 20 years. The 56-year-old Chen said, “I felt prickling all over my body. But it still made me feel blissful.”
Winter swimming is considered a sport in China. But it gained popularity much faster in Harbin than in other parts of the country. The city is considered a “holy land” for winter swimming. Winter swimmers appeared to have better health than others.

In a world that often feels more connected digitally than personally, forming meaningful relationships can be challenging. 1 , there’s an enjoyable, organic way to expand your social circle—through hobbies. Engaging in hobbies not only enriches your life personally but also provides opportunities to connect with people who share your interests.
2
When people share a hobby, they have an immediate topic of conversation and a foundation for friendship. Whether it’s a weekly book club, monthly art workshop, or biweekly dance class, hobbies provide a natural way to maintain social contact regularly.
4
Hobbies often bring together people from various backgrounds, ages, and professions, encouraging open-mindedness and acceptance. Engaging in an activity you love, surrounded by people with different perspectives, broadens your social circle and introduces you to new ideas and experiences.

Chen said the winter waters in her home city are warmer than those in Harbin. She said the experience strengthened her confidence in winter swimming.
*You Decang, who is a 76-year-old winter swimmer, said the swimming helped keep him healthy. And he noted that he had never caught a cold. You added, “If I go just one day without winter swimming, I feel quite uncomfortable.”

nearly
had overtaken
