The greening of planes, trains and automobiles
Moving goods and people around the world is responsible for a large part of global CO2 emissions (排放). As the world races to decarbonize everything, it faces particular problems with transportation — which accounts for about a quarter of our energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. Here’s the breakdown of the emissions in 2018 for different modes of transport.
The fuels for transport need to be not just green, cheap and powerful, but also lightweight and safe enough to be carried around. Each mode of transport has its specific fuel needs. Much is still to be settled, but here are some of the solutions to get us going green.
PLANES — Synthetic hydrocarbons
The hardest sector to decarbonize is aviation. One long-term option for sustainable fuel for planes is to make hydrocarbons from recycled air.
CARS — Batteries
Batteries are energy-efficient and electric cars can plug into existing systems and services. New solid-state batteries will take a car farther on a single charge.
TRAINS — Electricity
Some trains are already electrified through rails or wires; others can be made electric in pretty simple ways.
TRUCKS — Hydrogen
fuel cells
Hydrogen fuel cells are a lighter choice than batteries for trucks, but making green hydrogen is expensive.
SHIPS — Liquid ammonia
Liquid ammonia is easy to keep and transport, but it is hard to ignite (点燃) and requires an engine redesign.
This energy transition (变革) is global, and the amount of renewable energy the world will need is “a little bit mind-blowing,” says mechanical engineer Keith Wipke at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. It’s estimated that the global demand for electricity could more than double by 2050. Fortunately, analyses suggest that renewables are up to the task. “We need to speed up the development of green energy, and it will all get used,” says Wipke.
21. What percentage of global transport emissions did road vehicles account for in 2018?
A. 11.6%. B. 45.1%. C. 74.5%. D. 86.1%.
22. Which mode of transport can go green comparatively easily?
A. Planes. B. Trucks. C. Trains. D. Ships.
23 What does Wipke suggest regarding energy transition?
A. Limiting fuel consumption. B. Putting more effort into renewables.
C. Improving energy efficiency. D. Making electricity more affordable.

Solving the growing plastic waste puzzle
As hard as it is to imagine a time when we weren’t buried in plastics, mass production of synthetic polymers (合成聚合物) didn’t really begin until about 1950. Since then, however, we’ve generated an estimated 8.3 billion tons of the stuff — with about half that total coming since 2000 — and we’ve deserted something like 6.3 billion tons of it.
Unfortunately for the planet, only about 9 percent of that plastic waste has ever been recycled. Another 12 percent has been burned, most recently in waste-to-energy facilities. But most of the rest has gone into landfills — or worse, into the environment.
Much of what is done to recover plastic from the waste stream is a purely mechanical process. Once the plastic items have been sorted by polymer type and sent to the recycling workplace, they are simply cut up, washed clean and melted down into pellets (团粒). The pellets are then sold to manufacturers that will incorporate (组合) the material into new products.
Many of the chemical recycling techniques are already quite mature. According to a 2019 report by Closed Loop Partners, a New York-based investment firm that invests in circular economy-related startups, that list includes more than 40 plastics recycling plants that are either operating or scheduled to open within the next few years in the United States and Canada alone. At least some of those plants are expected to incorporate chemical recycling technology.
1.When does plastic waste reach its peak?
A.Before 1950. B.Before 2000.
C.After 2019. D.In recent decades.
2.At which procedure can plastics waste be made into monomers?
A.Plastic manufacturing. B.Oil and gas refining.
C.Chemical recycling. D.Mechanical recycling.
3.What is the sign of successful plastic waste recycling?
A.Plastic waste recycling becomes commercialized.
B.Plastic waste has been made into new plastics.
C.Most of plastic waste has already gone into landfills.
D.Much has been burned in waste-to-energy facilities.

Cooling Down Artificial Turf: A Water-Based Solution
Moving people and goods around the world is a major source of global CO2 emissions. But transportation is not the only area where we face challenges. Even in sports, we need to find ways to adapt to a changing climate. One example is the problem of hot artificial turf (人造草皮), which can make playing conditions uncomfortable and even dangerous.
Artificial turf, often used in sports fields, can become very hot during sunny days. This heat can make it hard for players to enjoy their games. To solve this, researchers have developed a new system that cools the turf using water. This system stores rainwater just below the surface of the field. Over time, the water will turn into vapor (蒸汽), cooling the turf in a natural way, much like how sweating cools our bodies.
On hot days when the air temperature reaches about 30℃, this system has shown great results. The surface temperature of the cooled turf was much lower than regular turf, which is usually above 50℃.
This new system not only improves the playing experience but also helps cities adapt to climate change. By cooling the turf, it reduces the heat in urban areas, making them more livable. This is part of a larger effort to use innovative solutions to tackle environmental challenges.
In conclusion, the water-cooling system for artificial turf is a simple yet effective way to make sports fields safer and more enjoyable. It shows how small changes can have a big impact, helping us adapt to a warmer world.
For more information, visit the project’s website at https://www.projectcitysports.com.
1.What does the new system aim to deal with?
A.Difficulties in caring for turf. B.Injuries from playing on turf.
C.Water supply for playing fields. D.Overheating of man-made grass.
2.Which plays the key role in the system?
A.Thick grass. B.Direct sunlight. C.Loose soil. D.Cooling vapor.
3.What can we infer from the second illustration?
A.Cooled turf is nearly as warm as natural grass. B.Air temperature is much easier to be lowered.
C.The temperature gap is narrower on hot days. D.Water cooling is more effective than air cooling.

1.(2026·山东省泰安肥城市高三上学期开学学情诊断)
Last August, city officials interviewed about 500 residents to find out people’s attitudes to protecting the environment and what actions they had taken. Here are the results:
As the diagram shows, the percentage of those who felt that they needed to help protect the environment is as high as 96%. Very few (4%) felt it was not necessary. More than half of those who took part in the survey had done four of the five activities in the past month. Around 90% had tried to recycle waste such as glass, metal and paper; and more than two thirds (70%) had tried to cut back on the use of disposable packaging, such as plastic honey bottles, butter and yoghurt containers. Also, the majority of residents had cycled or walked.
Unfortunately, not as many who took part had taken action to save water and energy in their homes. Just under 40% (38%) tried to save water when they were washing dishes or taking showers. Just over half (51%) tried to save energy by reducing the use of air conditioning or turning off lights.
To sum up, it seems that almost all who took part understood the need to help take care of the environment. Most of them tried to recycle waste, ride bikes or walk, and reduce the use of disposable packaging. However, not as many were saving water and energy. This indicates that the residents needed to pay more attention to these two activities.

By reusing through events like Stop 'N' Swap, NYC residents can take part in saving over 40 million pounds of material from landfill every year. Take a break from shopping, support a cleaner future, and join the ever-growing reuse community!

WHEN: February 19th, 12pm-3pm

Books, toys, clothing, and electronics are just some of the offerings. Furniture and other large items are not accepted at the swap. Anything leftover at the end of the day is donated or recycled.
Stop 'N' Swaps have developed a regular following among environmentally conscious New Yorkers. (2022年天津卷第二次)Getting into college is a big step for high school graduates, and it comes with a lot of changes. For most students, it’s the first time they’re living away from home and managing their own life. Not surprisingly, adapting to this new lifestyle can be challenging. The following four tips will make high school graduates better prepared for college life.
Goal setting
When setting goals, whether they’re academic, career, or personal, re-member they should be attainable but not too easy, so that you really have to push yourself to achieve them, and feel rewarded when you do. Writing down your goals and breaking down each huge, long-term goal into smaller more practical ones can help make it feel more real, and writing out a plan for achieving it can give you a roadmap to success.
Interpersonal skills
At college, you will interact with fellow students, professors, librarians, and many others. Strong interpersonal skills will help you build relationships during this time, and get more out of them. If you feel that your interpersonal skills need some work, practice asking thoughtful questions and listening closely, develop your understanding by putting yourself in someone else’s shoes, and enhance your self-confidence.
Studying
With fewer in-class hours and more on-your-own learning, you’re required to really digest learning material rather than simply memorize facts. To be successful in college you’ll need to learn how to integrate large amounts of information obtained through reading, do research, and write papers. Organization is the key, so if you are not someone who is naturally organized, set up your study schedule.
Budgeting
Managing money is a critical life skill, and for many, it is at college that they develop it for the first time. Start by estimating your financial balance. Then give high priority to the expenses on basic needs and determine how much money to set aside every month to cover those costs. Don’t forget about savings…and the fun stuff(movies, dinners out), too.
36. Who is this passage most probably written for?
A. College teachers.
B. University graduates.
C. High school teachers.

(2021年天津卷第二次)When starting college, most students enjoy a week's stay on campus before classes actually begin. What should you do with that time? Below are several tips to ease(使熟悉) yourself into college life.
Participating in Campus Welcome Activities
Most universities host welcome events before the academic year officially begins, including freshmen orientations (迎新会),campus picnics, and entertainments like concerts.
Participating in such events is a great way to learn about school facilities and understand campus culture: What do students do for fiin? What are their favorite classes? What is the history of your university? It can help you observe campus life outside the classroom.
Exploring Campus
Getting to know where essential campus resources are—such as the student advising center, psychological services, and the tutoring center~~will make your first few weeks on campus a lot easier, because you won't have to look for them while still getting used to your classes.
Take some time to check out the buildings where your classes will be held. This will prevent you from getting lost in the first few days of classes, and familiarize you with how long it takes to get from place to place. If you're worried about taking classes one after another in different buildings, a quick test run won't hurt. That way, you will avoid potential time delays in getting to your classes.
Starting a Routine
Before getting too excited about all of the fun things you will be able to do during the week, remember that you do have a pretty big schedule change coming up. Starting classes means being in different places at different times, so it’s a great idea to start getting used to that routine right this week.
What helps you most is to schedule your sleep. Following the planned time will ensure you have enough sleep to get to those early classes and stay wide awake.
If you have other daily routines, such as exercising or talking on the phone with family, work those into your day-to-day life before classes start so that you get a better idea of how they fit in with your schedule.
40. What is the author's purpose in writing this passage?
A. To offer some tips on making an easier start at college.
B. To remind freshmen about the first day of school.
C. To help freshmen organize campus activities.
D. To share his college experience with the reader.

The Park was created in 2008 by joining together Jokulsargljufur and Skaftafell National Park to create a supersized area of over 12,000 square kilometres, making it the largest national park in Europe.

Best Markets in France to Visit
Isle-sur-la-Sorgue’s antique market in Provence
Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is a small town in the south of France, better known for being one of the largest antique markets in Provence. Isle-sur-la-Sorgue’s famous antique market is held every Sunday, and runs throughout the full day. However, if you want to pick up something back home for your family or friends, I recommend you go early, because all the good stuff sells quickly.
Marché d’ Aligre in Paris
Along with foods from all across France, it also includes other items like wines, antiques, household goods, fabrics, old books, furniture, etc. The market is open every day except Monday from 7:30 am to 1:30 pm on weekdays and up to 2:30 pm on weekends. You can book a guided tour to Marché d’ Aligre.
Marché des Lices in Rennes
In the heart of the city is a large square that holds many restaurants and bars. But probably one of my favorite things to do in Rennes is to visit the farmers’ market, Marché des Lices. The first market was held here in 1453, and it has been a gathering point ever since. The market has expanded several times, with everything like fruits and vegetables, flowers, and more being sold here. The market runs every Saturday from 7:30 am to 1:30 pm.
Grande Braderie de Lille in Lille
With over 10,000 exhibitors in the streets, the city of Lille in the north of France hosts one of the largest and oldest flea (跳蚤) markets in Europe, selling antiques, paintings, furniture, and more. It is usually held on the first weekend of September, attracting millions of people every year. With various stands, local foods, a half-marathon, and parties late into the night, there is something for everyone.

A.Arrive there early. B.Pay in cash.

Sichuan, a province celebrated for its diverse landscapes and profound cultural roots, offers more than just its iconic landmarks. Beyond the bustling tourist trails lie lesser-known treasures that cater to adventurers, history buffs, and nature enthusiasts alike. These hidden gems, with their unique charm and authentic experiences, promise unforgettable journeys. Here are three such destinations waiting to be explored:
Daocheng Yading
Nestled in the Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, this remote plateau scenic area is called “the last pure land on Earth.” Its snow-capped peaks (including the 6,032-meter Mt. Chenrezig), turquoise lakes, and alpine meadows draw adventurers. Note that altitude sickness is common — visitors are advised to rest for a day in Daocheng County before heading up. The best months are May to June (wildflowers) and September to October (golden forests). Entrance: ¥146 (peak season), ¥120 (off-season). Open 7:00 a.m. — 5:30 p.m.
Leshan Giant Buddha
Carved into a cliff along the Min River, this 71-meter-tall statue is the world’s largest stone Buddha, built over 90 years during the Tang Dynasty. Unlike mountain hikes, it’s accessible via riverside paths and boat tours (¥70 extra). Avoid summer crowds — spring (March — April) or autumn (October — November) is better. Tickets: ¥80 (adults), free for kids under 1.2m. Opens 8:00 a.m. — 6:30 p.m. (April — October); 8:30 a.m. — 5:30 p.m. (November — March).
Langzhong Ancient Town
One of China’s four best-preserved ancient towns, Langzhong in Nanchong dates back 2,300 years. Its well-preserved city walls, traditional courtyards, and annual Spring Festival lantern shows (featuring 10,000+ lanterns) attract culture lovers. Unlike natural sites, it’s enjoyable year-round, though winter can be chilly. A combined ticket for key attractions (Zhang Fei Temple, Ancient Well Museum) costs ¥110. Most sites open 8:30 a.m. — 5:00 p.m., but night tours of the lantern-lit streets run until 10:00 p.m.
1.What should visitors prepare for when going to Daocheng Yading?
A.Boat tours. B.Altitude adaptation.
C.Lantern show tickets. D.Warm clothing.
2.Which season is recommended for visiting both Leshan Giant Buddha and Daocheng Yading?
A.March — April. B.May — June.
C.September — October. D.December — February.
3.What makes Langzhong Ancient Town different from the other two attractions?
A.It has historical buildings. B.It requires a combined ticket.
C.It’s suitable for year-round visits. D.It features natural scenery.

Days of heavy rain caused dangerous flooding in central Texas on Friday. The Guadalupe River overflowed, flooding neighborhoods and washing away roads and bridges. Hundreds of people had to leave their homes. Officials say this is the worst flooding the region has seen in years. Below is the breakdown of damages by county.

English Market Towns to Visit in the UK
English market towns come in many shapes and sizes. Each has a personality shaped by the goods and services produced and traded for centuries. But each town has more to do than shop.
Hereford, Herefordshire
Hereford has remained a lively market town since 1189. Skirting the town square, you’ll find lovely shops, eateries, and the Black and White House Museum. The Hereford Cathedral is the most impressive building in town. It’s also home to an ancient library. One of the four original copies of the Magna Carta is displayed there.
Ludlow, Shropshire
Ludlow is known as the Foodie Center of England. Butcher shops, greengrocers, bakeries, and cheese shops line the town square. Bordering the square, the Ludlow Castle is a “must explore” medieval stronghold. The three-day Ludlow Food Festival is held each September.
Shrewsbury, Shropshire
Getting to Shrewsbury Town Center from London is challenging but worth the anxiety. The River Severn has a significant turn through town, almost making an island of Shrewsbury Town Center. The shape creates a perfect market where goods could be shipped and received using the river as a highway. Flowers are everywhere-hanging baskets, window boxes, and planters-just what you imagine in an attractive English market town.
Mevagissey, Cornwall
Even if you haven’t been to the small fishing village Mevagissey, you’ve probably seen it in a movie or British TV show. The working harbor(港口) took shape in 1774. Fishermen go out to sea daily and sell their fish in harbor-side markets. Don’t leave the harbor without a traditional Comish pie. It’s delicious.

A. In the Ludlow Castle. B. In the Foodie Center of England.
C. In the Hereford Cathedral. D. In the Black and White House Museum.

A 35-minute hand-clapping, foot-stomping musical version of a Mark Twain favorite returns with this Tall Stacks festival.
“Tom Sawyer: A River Adventure” has all the good stuff, including the fence painting, the graveyard, the island and the cave. It is adapted by Joe McDonough, with music by David Kisor. 【2025全国一卷】
【答案】21. C 22. C 23. B
【解析】本文是一篇应用文。文章主要介绍了2018年不同交通方式的温室气体排放占比,以及飞机、汽车等各类交通工具的未来绿色燃料路径。

22. 细节理解题。根据图表信息TRAINS — Electricity部分中“Some trains are already electrified through rails or wires; others can be made electric in pretty simple ways. (一些列车已经通过轨道或电线实现了电气化;其他火车可以通过非常简单的方式实现电动化)”可知,火车相较其他交通方式更易实现绿色化。故选C项。
23. 细节理解题。根据最后一段中““We need to speed up the development of green energy and it will all get used,” says Wipke.

【答案】1.D 2.C 3.A

2.(2026·山东省高三上学期开学联考)
【答案】1.D 2.D 3.A

A.less than 15 years old B.from the countryside
C.important city officials D.15 years of age and older
2.What percentage of residents tried to reduce the use of air conditioning or lights?

B.Recycling waste materials.
C.Reducing disposable packaging use.

Catherine Crawford, (718) 809-1603 cerawford@grownyc.org
Jon Klar, (646) 530-0381 jklar@grownye.org
New Yorkers looking to reduce, reuse, and save money this year are invited to participate in Stop 'N' Swap, a free community event organized by local nonprofit GrowNYC.
The average NYC household throws away about 2,000 pounds of waste a year. By reusing through events like Stop 'N' Swap, NYC residents can take part in saving over 40 million pounds of material from landfill every year. Take a break from shopping, support a cleaner future, and join the ever-growing reuse community!
WHAT: Free Stop 'N' Swap Community Reuse Event
WHEN: February 19th, 12pm-3pm
WHERE: Bronx Works Classic Community Center, 286 East 156th Street, Bronx, NY 10451
The public is invited to bring clean and reusable items. No one is required to bring something to take something — you can simply show up with a bag and see what's free for the taking. Books, toys, clothing, and electronics are just some of the offerings. Furniture and other large items are not accepted at the swap. Anything leftover at the end of the day is donated or recycled.
Stop 'N' Swaps have developed a regular following among environmentally conscious New Yorkers. After almost two years without swaps, GrowNYC has set a goal of hosting one swap in each of the city's 59 community districts each year, providing opportunities to make NYC truly livable — a place where every person can enjoy a healthier life.

Skiddaw in Winter
Cumbria, England
It was an extremely cold winter's evening and freezing fog hung in the air. I climbed to the top of a small rise and realised that the mist was little more than a few feet deep, and though it was only a short climb, I found myself completely above it and looking at a wonderfully clear view of Skiddaw with the sum setting in the west. I used classical techniques, translated from my college days spent in the darkroom into Photoshop, to achieve the black—and—white image(图像).
