In April 1952, at the age of three, I had open heart surgery (手术) at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. My life was saved by two remarkable cardiologists (心脏病专家), Alfred Blalock and Helen Taussig, and a third important member of the team: Vivien Thomas, Blalock’s assistant. I was the classic“blue baby”, with a congenital (先天的) heart condition that prevented me from walking more than a few steps. If it had not been for this team and, as I later learned, particularly Vivien Thomas, I would not have lived to see my fourth birthday.
Vivien Thomas was born in 1910. He wanted to go to medical school-only a dream for a 19-year-old African American growing up in the South. Thomas became a carpenter (木匠) to earn money during the Great Depression but that could not replace his dream of becoming a doctor. In 1930, to get closer to the world of medicine, Thomas applied for and was hired as the laboratory assistant to Blalock, a young Hopkins graduate who was then doing his residency at s Vanderbilt University-Medical Center. His official job title was caretaker.
Working closely together in the Vanderbilt lab, Blalock and Thomas developed a solid working relationship, but they also became close personal friends. When Blalock moved to Hopkins in 1941 to become Chief of Surgery, he made sure that Thomas came with him to continue as his surgical assistant. A few years later, after teaming up with Taussig, the three of them developed the famous blue baby operation, which was first performed in 1944 by Blalock with Thomas by his side.
There is no question that the remarkable partnership among Thomas, Blalock and Taussig enabled me to live a full and healthy life for the past 70 years. Although Thomas was never able to achieve his dream of becoming a physician, he played a crucial role in the operating room for hundreds of children with a congenital heart condition. In 1976, Thomas received an honorary doctorate from Hopkins.
4. Why does the author mention his surgery at three years old?
A. To introduce Viven Thomas. B. To explain his health condition.
C. To stress the challenges of blue babies. D. To show the importance of cardiologists.
5 What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about Thomas?
A. His full support for his friend. B. His difficult journey into medicine.
C. His gradual realization of his dream. D. His great adaptability to the environment.
6. Which word best describes the relationship between Blalock and Thomas?
A. Brief. B. Unpleasant. C. Inseparable. D. Confusing.
7. What is the author’s tone in the text?
A. Regretful. B. Humorous. C. Thankful. D. Heartbroken.
C
Language lets us share our feelings, make connections, and even hand down family traditions like recipes and songs from generation to generation. But what about family members who don’t speak the same language?
A “mother language” is defined as the first language that a child learns at home. So you’d think that means your mother language is by default your strongest, most comfortable language, right? Wrong. While you might think learning a language is like riding a bicycle, something you never forget how to do, it’s easy to lose language fluency without practice.
Studies show that people who learn a heritage language (that is, one connected to their family history, whether they grew up speaking it or not) experience improved self-esteem (自尊) and safety in their identities (身份). Researchers also mention that reconnecting with and understanding the family history and community is the driving force behind heritage language learning.
Relearning a mother language or trying out a heritage language as a beginner might feel overwhelming at first, but the results can be incredibly rewarding. Jenny Liao’s article, Forgetting My First Language, details how her Cantonese slowly became rusty (荒疏的) after years of living away from home. Eventually, weekly phone calls with her parents only became possible through translation apps. The inability to communicate fluently had made their relationship shallow. Resolving to close these gaps, Liao threw herself into practicing Cantonese. She forced herself into uncomfortable Cantonese conversations whenever possible in stores and restaurants. Before long, she found she could have deeper conversations with her parents. Their relationship grew closer, even though her Cantonese only improved moderately. It’s a demonstration of the impressive power of language to bring families together.
Learning or relearning a heritage language can sound pretty intimidating at first. But the hard work invested proves to be rewarding and worthwhile. What could be a stronger personal connection than the connection with family heritage?
8. What is the author’s attitude to the thought “mother language is the strongest”?
A. Uncaring. B. Supportive. C. Concerned. D. Opposite.
9. What is the advantage of learning a heritage language according to studies?
A. Improved job skills. B. Heightened sense of belonging.
C. Sharpened communication skills. D. Broadened understanding of different opinions.
10. How is paragraph 4 developed?
A. By analyzing the cause. B. By offering an example.
C. By making a comparison. D. By explaining the data.
11. Which can replace the underlined word “intimidating” in the last paragraph?
A. Confusing. B. Surprising. C. Frightening. D. Relaxing.
D
This country is filled with dying small towns that lacked a plan B, one they should have had in place before the factory shut down.
Mount Shasta, California, did it right, thanks to a guy named Justin Hinckley Sisson. A schoolteacher from Connecticut, Sisson opened a hotel and restaurant in Mount Shasta in 1866 and started organizing trips for his visitors to go hunting, fishing, and hiking.
By 1990, when the last lumber mill (木材厂) closed in Mount Shasta, newcomers attracted to the recreational (娱乐的) opportunities in the area had taken up where Sisson left off, setting up stores and offering guide services. A new ski park opened in 1985, accompanied by hotels and restaurants. All in all, it added up to a smooth transition from a lumber-based economy to one based on recreational tourism.
A successful reinvention is a high tide that raises all boats and attracts hikers and skiers who fill the hotels and restaurants and keep the cash registers in the shops ringing.
But what happens when the tide doesn’t roll in? The small town where I live — Dunsmuir, California — provides an example. The town was once a railroad center. But there was no plan B in place before the railroad’s decline. So now, well-intentioned people here are trying to bring the town back to life, but through small efforts: a new art gallery, a small performing space, and some pretty good restaurants. None adds up to a solid transformation.
In their book, Our Towns, James and Deborah Fallows found common factors in successfully reinvented towns across the United States. Among them was an openness to newcomers. In these open towns, the newcomers often find opportunities to apply whatever skills and talents they may have in new ways in this new, lively environment.
Every small town has its share of talented, enterprising (进取心的) people, but they can’t do it alone. They need visitors and ideas from elsewhere. And people need to direct their positive energy and talent in the same direction, and come up with a theme, a story for their town to tell.
12. How did Sisson play a role in Mount Shasta’s transformation?
A. By promoting cultural events. B. By setting up a new industry.
C. By expanding recreational opportunities. D. By investing in educational development.
13. What was the impact of Mount Shasta’s reinvention?
A. It improved the local economy. B. It saved the lumber industry.
C. It changed the tide of tourism. D. It affected surrounding small towns.
14. What is stressed as a key factor in the successful reinvention of small towns?
A. A new, inspiring environment. B. Plenty of job opportunities.
C. Accepting fresh ideas. D. Training skillful talents.
15. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Small Towns Need A Plan B. B. The Reinvention of Tourism.
C. The Importance of Diversifying Industries. D. Enterprising People Are Moving to Dying Towns.

第二节 读后续写 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据具体内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was my birthday that day, and my grandfather gave me a gift—a piggy bank. It had an opening through which one could put money in, but the opening was not big enough to reach in and get the money out. The only way to get the money was to break the piggy hank open. My grandfather explained that was the whole idea. And he added. “The piggy bank would help save your money so that, at the end of the year, you might have enough for that bike you dreamed about.” He asked if I would put some of the money he gave me into the piggy bank. I agreed immediately and promised sincerely, “I wouldn’t break it open until I could afford my dream bike.”
Whenever my grandfather gave me some pocket money, he would say, “This is for spending. But you can save some and put it in the piggy bank if you want to save it up.” When he gave me larger amounts, it was clear for me to save the extra money in the piggy bank. For some time, this worked fine. I loved shaking the piggy hank and hearing the sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew more excited, dreaming about buying my new bike, and all the adventures I could have on it.
Whenever I wanted to take some money from the piggy bank to buy delicious ice-creams or beautiful presents. I would imagine riding my bike on the street, and thinking of that, my thoughts about buying those things went away. So for almost three years. I had only put money into the piggy hank without taking any out. I thought I wouldn’t break my piggy hank for anything. Bat one day something unexpected happened. I saw a piece of news on the television that a serious earthquake had happened in a nearby province. As many houses were destroyed, a lot of children became homeless. Seeing their shabby clothes and crying faces. I was sleepless that night. Staring at my piggy bank. I was thinking about what I could do with it.
注意:
1.续写词数应为50左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The next morning. I took out my piggy bank and shook it.

【答案】Dear Jack,
Delighted to hear that you are going to take a trip to China this July, I’d like to express my sincere welcome to you.
As I know, you are always interested in Chinese culture and want to learn some Chinese. Therefore, I suggest that you choose Chinese daily dialogues as a start, like greeting people, asking for directions and bargaining for souvenirs, which can help you a lot during your trip. Learning a foreign language needs great effort. Apparently, I’d like to be your teacher and send you an e-book with my teaching schedule later. Besides, Let’s have an online class over the Internet every weekend, through which I will try my best to make your learning easier and help you speak some fluent Chinese before your arrival.
If you have other ideas, please feel free to send me emails.
Yours
LiHua

I was about to break it and withdraw money when my mina came back to the bike I wanted to buy, and I hesitated. However, thinking of the look in the eyes of the children hoping for help in the earthquake, I grabbed the piggy bank and threw it to the ground. Suddenly, the piggy bank broke into pieces and the coins rolled all over the floor.
Hearing the noise, my grandfather came over. I explained to him what had happened. Having known my thought, he fondly touched my head and said, “Good boy, you did the right thing. Grandpa is proud of you.” He continued, “My dear grandson, you deserve that bicycle. As a bonus, let’s buy that bike together now.” “Thank you, Grandpa,” I was overwhelmed with happiness. From that day on, you would always see me riding my bike on the street, leaving my hearty laughter behind.
