Not wanting to talk to strangers, I decided to take photos. The back of the boat was a good place to catch the wonderful view of the sea. I walked there and saw a metal box standing there. I put my arms on it, without knowing it was a hot barbecue (烧烤架)! “My God, it hurts!” crying in pain, I moved my arms away at once. Although there weren’t marks on my arms, I was in great pain. And I didn’t ever have friends with me. I sat alone, trying not to cry. Finally my arms turned purple. People on the boat saw this and came to help me. One girl offered me a special scald cream (烫伤膏). After treatment, I felt much better. I could enjoy the beauty of the Whitsundays, talk to strangers on the boat and have fun with them. Why do we yawn? There are about 20 reasons that scientists think are possible for yawning after research. They do not know exactly why yawning happens, but they do know many facts about yawning. We know that everyone yawns in the same way. First you open your mouth slowly. Your mouth stays open for about five seconds. You take in a lot of air and then push it out. Then you quickly close your mouth. We also know that yawning is contagious. When you see someone yawn, you yawn, too. Many people say they yawn because they are bored or tired. That might be true. People do often yawn before they sleep and after they wake up. However, we know that people also yawn when they are excited or nervous. Olympic runners, for example, often yawn before a race. Why is that? In 2007, scientists found that a yawn can help a warm brain cool down. Some scientists believe that yawning makes you notice things more quickly. When you yawn, you breathe deeply. You also stretch (强化) the muscles (肌肉) in your face, mouth, and neck. Your eardrums stretch, too. Maybe this helps you to be quicker to notice things. In some countries, people think yawning is not nice. People put their hands over their mouths to cover a yawn. In other countries, people think yawning is healthy. They think that opening the mouth very wide can let good things in. When they breathe out, they think that bad things go out of the body with the air. Scientists do not spend much time studying yawning. That is probably because yawning does not hurt. It is just something we do. 36. What does the underlined word “contagious” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Able to spread quickly. B. Able to breathe easily. C. Able to change easily. D. Able to sleep quickly. 37. Why do Olympic runners often yawn before a race? A. They are too tired or too bored. B. A yawn can let good things in. C. A yawn can help a warm brain cool down. D. A yawn can stretch the muscles in their faces. 38. What is the main idea of Paragraph 5? A. Reasons for yawning. B. Advantages of yawning. C. Disadvantages of yawning. D. Different ideas about yawning. 39. What can we probably learn from the passage? A. People use different ways to yawn. B. Scientists will do further research on yawning. C. It’s hard to notice things quickly while yawning. D. Some scientists think yawning is good for people. 40. What would be the best structure of the passage? A. B. C. D. 【答案】36. A 37. C 38. D 39. D 40. 根据第二段中的“When you see someone yawn, you yawn, too.”可知,当你看到别人打哈欠时,你也会打哈欠,这说明打哈欠是会传染的,能够迅速传播。因此,contagious在这里的意思是“能够迅速传播的”。故选A。 【37题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Olympic runners, for example, often yawn before a race. A company called Cute Circuit has developed new football shirts for football fans. They can help deaf football fans to “feel” the atmosphere (气氛) of the stadium (运动场) during a game. People who have hearing problems can’t listen to music as normal people do but they can feel it. Sound is made up of microphone vibrations (震动). Deaf people can feel vibrations with the help of some part of the brain which normal people use for hearing. How does this amazing shirt work? Cute Circuit sets microphones around Newcastle United stadium to receive the sound of the people cheering and singing. A computer program analyses (分析) the sounds picked up and changes them into data (数据). Then it will be sent to the football shirts. Little motors (发动机) inside the shirts would vibrate. Finally, the wearer will feel the sounds of the people. Deaf and hard-of-hearing people can also use the shirts to feel live music in the concert. The very deep musical sounds of instruments like drums and basses vibrate close to the stomach. Higher sounds from instruments like the violin, the guitar or the dizi vibrate higher around the neck and arms. Besides, the shirts can be used to feel sounds while playing video games. The football shirts were used for the first time at St James’ Park, Newcastle United stadium, on April 13th. They will be available (可获得的) for deaf or hard-of-hearing fans at all Newcastle matches that are played at the stadium from now on. 41. Cute Circuit created the new football shirts to help ________. As we all know, doing chores helps to improve children’s living skills and teaches them how to look after themselves. ____46____ What kinds of chores do you usually do around the house? ____47____ All of these are “indoor chores”. But in many places—especially in the countryside in the US, kids have different “outdoor chores” during different seasons. ____48____ As trees lose their leaves in fall, the leaves will pile up (堆积) in people’s yards. It is up to each family to clean up the leaves and put them in big trash bags. After a heavy snowfall in winter, children also play an important role in doing outdoor chores. They help shovel (铲) snow in their front yard. ____49____ Spring and summer bring lots of rain and sun which make the grass in people’s yards grow tall. It is common for kids to mow (割草) their yards to keep them fresh and tidy. Doing all of these chores might sound like a lot of work. ____50____ People who don’t have children might even pay neighborhood kids to take care of chores for them. It’s a good way to make some money if you aren’t old enough to have a real job yet. A. In the fall, the most common outdoor chore is cleaning leaves. B. Maybe you clean your room, wash the dishes, wash clothes, sweep or mop (拖) the floor. C. So, more and more children do chores. D. If not, it might be hard for families to leave their homes. E. Although there weren’t marks on my arms I was in great pain. A. B. C. D. D We’ve all heard of smart phones, but how about smart clothing? A company called Cute Circuit has developed new football shirts for football fans. They can help deaf football fans to “feel” the atmosphere (气氛) of the stadium (运动场) during a game. People who have hearing problems can’t listen to music as normal people do but they can feel it. Sound is made up of microphone vibrations (震动). Deaf people can feel vibrations with the help of some part of the brain which normal people use for hearing. How does this amazing shirt work?
