A group of young people often went fishing in a small lake. To their surprise, there was a fisherman always fishing in the river near the small lake.
The young people thought the fisherman was silly. How could he catch fish in such big waves (波浪)? They thought the old man would leave in a few days, but a month later, the old man was still fishing in the fast river.
One day, one of the young men asked the fisherman. “It’s impossible to catch fish in these quick waters. Why are you still here?” The fisherman said nothing, but picked up his basket and put it upside down. And a number of fish fell out of the basket. These fish that were jumping up and down on the ground were so big and fat.
The young man was very surprised. Why did the fisherman catch such big fish in such quick water?
The fisherman smiled and said, “The low oxygen (氧气) in the lake is enough for small fish. But these big fish need to have more oxygen in water. They can only go somewhere with big waves. The bigger the waves, the more oxygen in the water, and the more big fish.” Again the fisherman said, “Many people think that the places with big waves are not right for fish to live, so they choose to fish in a quiet deep lake. But they are just wrong. Strong winds and waves seem to be the suffering (折磨) for fish, but these sufferings are the natural oxygen feeder for fish. Only through these hardships can fish grow well.”
24. How did the young men like the fisherman at first?
A. Smart. B. Funny. C. Stupid. D. Kind.
25. What did the old man show to the young man?
A. Some big and fat fish. B. An empty basket. C. Some freshwater. D. A beautiful basket.
26. Why are there more big fish in the rivers with big waves according to the fisherman?
A. Because big fish like playing in the waves that run fast.
B. Because big fish like the sound which the waves make.
C. Because there is more food in these rivers for big fish to live.
D. Because there is more oxygen in these rivers for big fish to live.
27. What can we learn from the text?
A. Kindness makes one lucky.
B. A good beginning makes a good ending.
C. Difficulties make a man stronger.
D. Honesty makes a person beautiful.

According to a study, more than 130 billion pounds of uneaten food go to waste in Laura’s country each year. That is about 30% of the yearly food supply. It is a sad fact, especially when you consider how many families and homeless people are in hunger.
When Laura saw her school dining hall throw away food that was not eaten at all every day, she came up with an idea. She started a project to help her school dining hall to give away uneaten food to homeless shelters (收容所) in her community. In the past three years, the same project has spread to other schools and some fast food restaurants throughout the city. The project is called Feed & Find, and has already fed thousands of people in her city.
How does it work? Through an App, Feed & Find matches local homeless shelters with school dining halls and restaurants that have uneaten food to provide. When dining halls or restaurants have uneaten food left, they can use the App to share the information about the food. A truck driver working for the project is then sent to pick it up and take it to a shelter.
Pretty cool, right? It’s not surprising that many people in other cities have got in touch with Laura, expecting that she could help develop similar projects for their communities.
Some people, however, have concerns about the safety of the uneaten food. They think such food may not be clean enough. Still, this project is a clever way to help solve the problem of food waste and it helps those in need.
28. What can the numbers in Paragraph 1 tell us?
A. Some people are poor. B. Food waste is serious.
C. The population is large. D. The research is interesting.
29. Why do many people in other cities connect with Laura?
A. They hope to find a truck driver to send food. B. They expect her to visit their communities.
C. They hope that she can give away food to them. D. They expect her to help develop projects.
30. What does the underlined word “concerns” in this passage mean?
A. Ways. B. Secret. C. Worries. D. Decisions.
31. Which can be the best title for this passage?
A. A Dining Guide App. B. A Food Sharing Project.
C. A Driving Service App. D. A Food Safety Project.

Recently, researchers did an experiment (实验) on whether online brain games can improve people’s IQ. More than 8,600 people were asked to play online brain games to improve their memory and other skills for at least 10 minutes a day, three times a week. They were compared with more than 2,700 people who didn’t play any brain games, but spent the same amount of time surfing the Internet. All participants (参与者) were given an “IQ test” before and after the experiment.
Researchers found the people who did the brain games training didn’t do any better in the test than people who simply surf the Internet. “If you’re playing these games like SNAKE (贪吃蛇) because they’re fun, that’s absolutely fine,” said Adrian Owen, the study’s leader. “But if you’re hoping these games will improve your IQ, our studies suggest they don’t work.”
It’s also found that millions of people around the world play brain games, though few studies have examined (检测) if the games work. Not many studies suggest the skills used in these brain games transfer (迁移) to the real world.
Instead of playing brain games, the professor Kramer said people would be better off getting some exercise. He said physical activity can help produce new brain cells (细胞).
If people are enjoying the brain games, they probably aren’t being challenged and might as well be playing a common video game. So Philip said people should consider learning a new language or reading books if they really want to improve their IQ, “Computer games were not an easy shortcut (捷径). Getting smart is hard work,” he said.
32. Why is the first paragraph written?
A. To lead in the topic. B. To show the fact. C. To shock the readers. D. To raise a question.
33. What was the difference in the experiment setup for the two groups?
A. The time. B. The age. C. The activity. D. The place.
34. What did the findings in Paragraph 2 show?
A. The game SNAKE was fun to relax.
B. Surfing the Internet could make people smart.
C. Online brain games couldn’t improve people’s IQ.
D. Physical activity could help to keep people healthy.
35. What can we infer from the studies in the article?
A. Many studies show that brain games are a useful way of improving IQ.
B. A few studies suggest the skills used in these brain games transfer to the real world.
C. People may get smarter if they do more physical activities such as running.
D. Surfing the Internet may be more helpful in improving IQ than online brain games.

A rich man lived in a small town. He was very kind, but his son had started hanging out with a kid who often told lies. The father tried to warn his son about this, but his son wouldn’t listen.
One day, an old wise man came to the town. The father went to the wise man to ask for advice. The wise man said, “Send your son to me tomorrow morning. I will talk to him.”
The next morning, the father sent his son over. The wise man asked the son to pick a rose from his garden and said, “Smell it and feel its fragrance (芬芳).” The boy did so. Then the wise man showed the son a bag of wheat (小麦) and asked the boy to put the rose next to the bag.
After an hour, the wise man asked the boy to smell the rose again. The boy said, “It smells just as good as before.” Then the wise man said, “Now put the rose next to this bag of sugar.” The boy did so.
After an hour, the wise man asked the boy to smell the rose again. “Does it smell any different?” the wise man asked the boy. “No, it smells as fresh as before.” the boy replied. Then the wise man said, “You should be like this rose—be ‘fresh’ to everyone you meet. Don’t let ‘bad smell’ influence how you act.”
