Scientists store data in ice using only air bubbles
We could store information in ice for thousands of years. By changing the shape and placement of bubbles trapped as water freezes, scientists have discovered a way to store messages. The study was published in Cell Reports Physical Science by researchers at the Beijing Institute of Technology.
Inspiration
Traditional information storage, such as paper and the digital drives, struggles in extreme environments like Antarctica or the Moon. But ice exists well in the cold. Furthermore, ice already stores a lot of information about the past. It can offer clues about temperature, atmospheric chemistry, and even volcanic eruptions. What if, the researchers wondered, we could use this as well?
It sounds crazy, but the team's idea was relatively simple. If bubbles in ice can hold history, perhaps we can use controlled bubbles to write messages into newly formed ice.
When water freezes, it traps gases as bubbles. Additionally, the rate at which water freezes affects the shape and size of bubbles predictably. With these phenomena in mind, researchers created thin layers of water sandwiched between transparent sheets and froze them using a carefully monitored cold plate. By adjusting the freezing rate, they could control the size, shape, and layers of air bubbles that formed.
It was found that as the freezing rate was decreased, any one ice layer would contain either egg-shaped bubbles, a mix of egg and needle-shaped bubbles, needle-shaped bubbles only, or no bubbles at all. The scientists thus proceeded to assign different combinations of bubble shape, size and depth to different English letters and Arabic numerals in binary code, ternary code, etc.
In order to read the resulting messages, the team even built a decoding system: a camera takes a photo of the ice slice, and software reads the position and brightness of the bubbles. From this, the software reconstructs the message.
Potential application
For now, the capacity is limited — a few sentences per ice cube. But the team says the system could be made more efficient. They say that eventually, ice storage could become a practicable method in extreme environments. Of course, the system depends on the preservation of ice. But in environments with subzero temperatures, the method could provide a low-energy, efficient, and visual form of information storage.

Daci Temple
Daci Temple, a peaceful Buddhist temple in the heart of Chengdu’s busy commercial district, stands as a vivid reflection of the harmonious coexistence of ancient spirituality and modern urban life.
The original temple dates back to the Wei and Jin dynasties. It reached its peak during the Tang Dynasty when Emperor Xuanzong, touched by the temple monks’ (和尚的) charitable acts during his refuge (避难) in Chengdu, named it “Daci Temple” and granted (赐予) it large areas of land. The temple became more well-known when the famous Buddhist monk Xuanzang stayed there in 618. He was fully ordained (任命) as a monk at Daci Temple in 622 before setting off on his legendary journey to India.

From tradition to trend: How Chengdu’s ancient teahouses are going viral
It’s barely 9 a.m. when I slide into a bamboo armchair at Heming Teahouse in Chengdu’s People’s Park. This century-old teahouse is one of the oldest in the city that I called home until I was nine. Growing up here, I spent many weekends in open-air teahouses like this one. While adults drank tea and children ran around, street vendors carrying heavy baskets balanced on bamboo shoulder poles would come round selling snacks.
But as I sip my green tea, I’m struck by how unusually busy the teahouse is. Crowds of tourists with phones in video mode stream past my chair. A group of students is playing cards next to me. I lean over and ask why there are so many people here on a weekday. One student tells me Heming has now gained internet fame among Chinese travellers.
Later that day, my uncle tells me that Heming’s popularity reflects a broader trend in Chengdu — the transformation of old low-rise residential buildings into busy restaurants and teahouses. In recent years, significant efforts have been made to protect and redevelop old buildings of heritage value. One well-known project is the downtown Taikoo Li shopping and entertainment complex, where a handful of 19th-century buildings surrounding Daci Temple were restored and given new life about a decade ago. Mi Xun Teahouse, a Michelin-starred restaurant, occupies one of these historical structures. It’s here that I meet its executive chef, Tony Xu.
“Because Chengdu has a strong tea culture, we started with tea and some snacks,” Xu says.“But more and more people were requesting food, so we added more dishes to the menu. Now, many people come for the food.” For tea lovers, Mi Xun also offers a selection of high-quality teas, served in a simplified version of the traditional kung fu tea ceremony. Attention is still paid to the drinkware — for example, green tea is always served in a glass pot, while black tea comes in white ceramics.
In Chengdu, ancient teahouses are being reimagined as stylish destinations where centuries-old drinks meet spicy local dishes and Michelin-starred dining. Chengdu is a laid-back city, and the best way to experience it is in a teahouse.
