Unit 2 Getting along

Lesson 5: Developing ideas

(Reading for Writing)

I. Teaching Objectives

(一)Language Ability

  1.                            Analyze the structure and language features of the model letter A Letter to My Best Friend (expressing gratitude and resolving a small misunderstanding).
  2.                            Write a short letter to a friend, using learned vocabulary and sentence patterns to talk about friendship and address minor conflicts.

(二)Cultural Awareness

  1.                            Understand that writing letters to express feelings is a valued tradition in many cultures, reflecting sincerity in relationships.
  2.                            Recognize that addressing conflicts openly (as in the model letter) is a common way to strengthen friendships across cultures.

(三)Thinking Ability

  1.                            Identify the logical structure of the model letter (greeting → sharing feelings → resolving a misunderstanding → closing).
  2.                            Select specific details to convey warmth and sincerity in writing (e.g., "I remember when you helped me with math last term").

(四)Learning Ability

  1.                            Learn writing strategies such as using personal anecdotes to make letters more vivid.
  2.                            Develop peer-editing skills to improve the tone and clarity of letters.

II. Teaching Key Points

  1.                            Key vocabulary: trust, cherish, appreciate, misunderstanding, make amends.
  2.                            The structure of a friendly letter: Greeting → Body (feelings + examples + resolution) → Closing.page number 0

III. Teaching Difficult Points

  1.                            Using specific examples to show friendship (e.g., "You stayed with me when I felt sad after the exam").
  2.                            Balancing honesty and kindness when addressing a misunderstanding (e.g., "I felt hurt, but I know it wasn’t your fault").

IV. Teaching Procedures

(一)Lead-in(5 minutes)

  •                               Activity 1: Show a picture of two friends laughing together and a handwritten letter. Ask: Why do people write letters to friends? What makes a letter meaningful?
  •                               Activity 2: Brainstorm: "What do you want to tell a good friend?" (e.g., "Thank you," "I’m sorry for the other day"). List ideas on the board.

Design Intent: Activate interest in letter writing and connect to personal experiences.

(二)Presentation(10 minutes)

  •                               Activity 1: Read A Letter to My Best Friend together. Identify the structure:
    •                                              Greeting: "Dear Emma,"
    •                                              Paragraph 1: Express gratitude for the friendship ("I’m so lucky to have you as a friend").
    •                                              Paragraph 2: Mention a small misunderstanding ("I was upset when you missed our plans, but I realize you were sick").
    •                                              Paragraph 3: Resolve it and reaffirm the friendship ("Let’s meet this weekend—I’ll bring your favorite snacks!").
    •                                              Closing: "Your friend, Lily"
  •                               Activity 2: Highlight useful language:
    •                                              Expressing gratitude: "I really appreciate how you..."
    •                                              Addressing conflicts: "I want to talk about what happened because..."
    •                                              Reaffirming friendship: "Our friendship means a lot to me, so..."page number 1
