“Do you want to go to work with me today?” Asked my father one day when I was nine or 10years old. He had never taken me to work with him before.
How could I have said no? I had no idea where my father worked, nor how he earned a living. He left our house every morning before we woke up and came back every night after we finished dinner. I wanted to know something about his job. So, I gave him a positive answer.
My dad drove us south to the city of Newark, where he was born. There we entered a middle-class apartment building. He made the rounds doing regular duty for the next few hours with me following closely. He checked the basic systems and services. He collected rents. He carried around a case of tools so that he could fix appliances, such as a washing machine.
He took me to work with him a few other times over the years. I always loved going. I got to see him in action, doing his job among other people, out in the wider world and looking important, even heroic. I felt proud of him, proud to be his son. I wish he had taken me more often.
Years later, I followed his tradition. I took my daughter Caroline with me to my office for a day. She saw me in a glassed-off conference room brainstorming with colleagues, on the phone talking with clients (客户) and—no doubt the most attractive scene of all—on my computer writing a report. With any luck, my daughter felt the same pride I had felt with my own father.
Today fewer and fewer kids get the same opportunity. Maybe we should make this a tradition.

If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter (大脑灰质). This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles. The study also found the younger people learn a second language, the greater the effect is.
A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.
Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference is.
“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” it means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales has researched the link between bilingualism and math skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible”, he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.

48.The underlined word “bilingual” probably means .
A.a researcher on language learning
B.a person who is good at learning foreign languages
C.a person who can speak two languages
D.an active language learner
49.We may know from the scientific findings that .
A.the earlier you start to learn a second language the higher the grey matter density is
B.there is no difference between a later second language learner and one who doesn’t know a second language
C.the experience of learning a second language has bad effect on people’s brain
D.the ability of learning a second language is changing all the time

When it’s raining very heavily, we say it’s “raining cats and dogs.” You might even enjoy taking a break from the heat during the “dog days” of the year. Today, many dog-related idioms are familiar, but have you ever wondered about the stories behind the sayings?
“A dog’s breakfast” is an idiom used to describe a total mess. Believe it or not, this one is thought to come from bad cooking. If a dish is cooked so badly that no person would eat it, it would be given to the dog. The saying is now used to describe anything that ends poorly. Interestingly, for unknown reasons “a dog’s dinner” came to mean “one who is dressed in an improper way.”
People may say that you are “barking (吠) up the wrong tree” when you are dealing with something in the wrong way. This idiom dates back to (追溯到) the practice of hunting with dogs. The dogs often ran after animals into trees, where their owners could easily find them. If a dog followed the wrong smell, however, they might find themselves barking at a tree that held nothing.
Many people even describe the weather by using the image of dogs. The “dog days” are the hottest days of the year. The saying, however, dates back to the ancient Romans. It was the Romans who first noticed that the hottest days of the summer seemed to coincide (同时发生) with the appearance of Sirius, the so-called “dog star” and a part of the Canis Major (“big dog”) constellation (星座). But even the coldest nights have interesting idioms and the history to go with them. One Australian idiom describes the practice of sleeping alongside a dog for warmth during cold evenings. A very cold night might need more than one dog, so it is a “three-dog night. ”
Dog-related idioms are a part of many people’s everyday language. Figuring out the stories of idioms can be difficult, but they often have a rich and interesting history behind them.
51.What is the purpose of the idioms in paragraph 1?
A.To explain the main idea of the text. B.To bring up the topic of the text.
C.To show interesting research. D.To add related examples.
52.What does the saying “A dog’s breakfast” mean nowadays?
A.A messy kitchen. B.A dog’s dinner.
C.An improper-dressed person. D.An unsatisfactory ending.
53.Which idiom is related to the activity of hunting?
A.Dog days. B.A dog’s dinner.
C.A dog’s breakfast. D.Bark up the wrong tree.
54.What can we say about “three-dog night”?
A.It has a completely different meaning in Roman culture.
B.It can be used to describe extremely cold temperatures.
C.It presents the appearance of Sirius in summer.
D.It shows people’s love for dogs.
55.What is the main idea of this passage?
A.Offering some hints on learning idioms.

The students of Carlton Primary School are treated to an after-school program once a week to learn how to keep healthy and get along with the community through playing sports.
Louise Larcombe was studying for a Master’s in Public Health at the University of Melbourne when she started looking for a way to help out the local community. She decided to join the Heart of Carlton program run by Sports Without Borders in 2019. She is now in her third year of volunteering for the program. The program is designed to get school kids to connect with their local community through sports.
It addresses a different theme each week for the children to learn about and discuss, such as a healthy diet, good sportsmanship, and teamwork. Larcombe said it can be quite a challenge for her because a classroom-of kids can be pretty wild after class, and they want to go play soccer instead of listening to her.
Larcombe found it easy to get involved because sports naturally attracted her and she wanted to understand the effects of sports on a community directly. “Sport is a cool platform for improving health. People get the physical activity and it brings them together. It’s a good platform for health messaging,” she said. Larcombe believes the Heart of Carlton program is a great stepping stone for people to connect with the community.
Sports Without Borders has a good support network, where teachers are involved from the get-go, and parents often lend their support. Meanwhile, it is also assisted by the R. E. Ross Trust and the Telco Together Foundation, helping primary school kids learn through sports.
76.What did Larcombe do as her mission in volunteering for the Heart of Carlton program in 2019? (no more than 12 words)

Dear Li Hua,
I am sorry to hear that you have some trouble learning English. As a native speaker, I would like to share some advice with you.
First, you’d better listen to the teacher carefully and take notes so that you can go over your lessons regularly after class. Besides, vocabulary plays a key role in English learning, so it is important to spend some time reciting words. Additionally, why not try to communicate with your classmates in English out of class, which can improve your spoken English quickly?
Wish you have fun learning English!

C.An improper-dressed person. D.An unsatisfactory ending.
53.Which idiom is related to the activity of hunting?
A.Dog days. B.A dog’s dinner.
C.A dog’s breakfast. D.Bark up the wrong tree.
54.What can we say about “three-dog night”?
A.It has a completely different meaning in Roman culture.
B.It can be used to describe extremely cold temperatures.
C.It presents the appearance of Sirius in summer.
D.It shows people’s love for dogs.
55.What is the main idea of this passage?
