It’s been named the “Venice of Africa”, but comparisons between the unattractive community of Makoko and the historic Italian city begin and end at the water’s edge.
Makoko’s huts (简陋的棚) rise from the dirty waters of the lagoon around Lagos. Nigeria’s biggest city—very different from the beautiful bridges and buildings that mark Venice.
Now it is hoped that education, with the help of creative architecture (建筑), can help create a better future for the children of Makoko.
The hope comes in the shape of a floating (漂浮的) school, built completely by the locals. The project, backed by the UN Development Fund, the Nigerian government and the Heinrich Boll Foundation, is the brainchild of local architect, Kunle Adeyemi. Kunle said that improving the poor area required something new that was more in tune with (和……融洽) local customs and the environment.
“Living on water is actually a way of life...so, the question is then, how do you improve that condition, how do you deal with the challenges of living on water in a safe, healthy and environmentally sound way?” he said.
Canoes, long light boats, are how the 150, 000 people who live in Makoko get around as they try to make a living by fishing and trading.
The new school floats on 250 empty blue barrels fixed under its wooden base designed to get around the problems of periodic flooding in the area. Fishermen search the waters for the day’s catch. The floating school gives them a place to tie up their canoes (独木舟) and fix nets while children are in class.
Jeremiah Oleole Austin is one of the few young people to have gone on to further education. “I was born and brought up here, so I know how the people suffer. I know what they really need in this community. Without some...training or skills, how can they become successful?” said the art student. “There are only a few of us who went out into the city to see more. If there are more schools, I believe there will be change in the community.”
31. What do the comparisons between Makoko and Venice show?
A. Makoko is far better than Venice. B. Makoko is very different from Venice.
C. Makoko will become a second Venice. D. Makoko deserves the name “Venice of Africa”.
32 What do we know about the floating school?
A. It looks foreign in appearance. B. It suffers from periodic flooding.
C. It received donations from the locals. D. It was designed by a native of Makoko.

A. Solutions should be realistic. B. It’s hard to make a living on water.
C. There should be a change in lifestyle. D. Unhealthy conditions are a great problem.
34. What is Jeremiah’s opinion on the floating school?
A. It should teach what young people really need.
B. It gives children a chance to change their lives.
C. It should run some training courses for fishermen.
D. It’s the only way to avoid the state of being poor.
35. What is the best title for the passage?

Like many people over the past few years, I have found myself turning to audiobooks (有声读物) as the main way of reading. I find it far more comfortable to “read with my ears” while my eyes are resting. But a recent study makes me wonder if this will come at the price of my ability to understand.
The study comes from Boaz Keysar and Janet Geipel. It is based on the “dual (双重的) process model”, which means we have two ways of processing information. ★ It is quick, but easier to make mistakes. The second one has something to do with the use of logic reasoning (逻辑推理). When it is used, we think through the material step by step. Experts have designed different tests to decide which of these two ways a person is using. As one example, consider the following question: How many suns did Yu Gong shoot down? If you answered nine, perhaps you were only noticing some words of the question, which is the first way of thinking. To get to the right answer-zero, you need to think more carefully about the words of the question. They would allow you to remember it was Hou Yi who shot down the suns, not Yu Gong. That is the kind of logic reasoning process.
Keysar and Geipel’s study was to find out whether seeing or hearing the information would make things different. The result was: When answering these kinds of simple questions, it was more possible for people to make mistakes when the sentences were spoken out loud, rather than written.
It could be a problem if we depend more on our feelings when we are getting information that needs logic reasoning. For this reason, I will return to reading serious books with my eyes rather than my ears. But I won’t stop listening to novels. I am quite happy that my mind can take a break then.
36. What does the writer think of listening to audiobooks?
A. It is cheap. B. It is tiring. C. It is relaxing. D. It is wasting time.
37. Which of the following can be put in ★ ?
A. First, you should read the information carefully.
B. The first one depends on natural ability and feeling.
C. They are the key to successful understanding.
D. One is reading with ears, the other is reading with eyes.
38. Processing information by using logic reasoning allows people to ________.
A. think about the information carefully
B. get the information without thinking
C. remember the information at once
D. get only the main idea of the information
39. Why are Yu Gong and Hou Yi mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To report a fact. B. To explain an opinion.
C. To introduce a topic. D. To offer background information.
40. What does the writer want to tell us?
A. Listening to books prevents your understanding.
B. Reading serious books is good for you.
C. You must think twice while reading
D. Ways of processing information are different.

B The first one depends on natural ability and feeling.
C. They are the key to successful understanding.
D. One is reading with ears, the other is reading with eyes.
38. Processing information by using logic reasoning allows people to ________.
A think about the information carefully
B. get the information without thinking
C. remember the information at once
D. get only the main idea of the information
