1. since prep. 自从……以来；自从……之后

【教材原句】Since then, he hasn't seen a child there.

从那以后，他再也没有在那里见过孩子。

【常见用法】

(1) since作介词时，意为“自从……以来; 自从……之后”，其后常接时间点，句子的时态常用完成时，且在肯定句中的谓语动词要用延续性动词。

(2) since作连词时，意为“因为；由于；既然”，可以引导原因状语从句。

Since 2020, he's made short videos of himself dancing in London.

自2020年以来，他制作了自己在伦敦跳舞的短视频。

Since this method doesn't work, let's try another.

【易混辨析】since与for的用法区别

(1)since 意为“自……以后；从……以来”，其后接时间点，用来说明动作的开始时间。

(2)for 意为“达；计”，其后接时间段，用来说明动作或状态持续的时间。

We have known each other for ten years.

2. afraid adj.害怕的；恐惧的

孩子们看起来很害怕。

【常见用法】raid作形容词，意为“害怕的；恐惧的”，位于be动词后作表语。

Don't be afraid. Your dad will protect you.

别害怕。你爸爸会保护你的。
