The Senior School Entrance Exams for Chinese Junior 3 students used to be mainly about academic (学术类的) subjects such as Chinese, Maths, English, etc. But starting from 2022, there are also tests in music. This policy aims to encourage primary and secondary schools to provide more fine music classes because a new study shows that music education is really important in school education. Here are some ideas on how music plays an important role in school education.
Music helps with Maths and Science. Students learn to count, and how to multiply and divide. Students also use Science to help them discover what sounds good together and what doesn’t. Besides, students also use Science to understand how music is produced by vibration (颤动) and why.
Students learn a lot about languages through music. Many songs are written in foreign languages. Students must learn to translate these foreign works to understand what they are singing about.
Students learn a huge amount of cooperation (协调) of body parts through music, so parts of the body can work better together. For example, students must use motor (肌肉运动的) skills in order to play an instrument. Singers and wind (管乐器) players must learn breath control and be in good shape to sing and play.
Students learn about Art through music. Some famous pieces of music were written about important pieces of art, and students learn about the artists and styles as they’re playing the music.
Music education also brings higher thinking. Students have to be aware (知道的) of what every other musician does at every time. In this way, it develops cooperation as well. They tend to develop more ability for learning.

A famous singer agreed to sing in a bar (酒吧). The manager of the bar made it widely known around town and tickets for the event sold out quickly. In fact, it turned out that there were no seats left on the night of the concert. A feeling of expectation (期望) and happiness was in the air as the manager walked up to the stage (舞台). He said, “Hello everybody, thank you for being here tonight. I am afraid that the singer will not be singing tonight because she is ill. However, we have found another great singer. She will sing for you. We hope she will give you great happiness as well...” The air seemed frozen (凝固) for a moment. People were unhappy about the news. They did not even hear the host say the stand—in’s(替身) name.
The environment turned from excitement to quietness. The stand—in performer gave the show everything she had. When she finished, there was nothing. It was so quiet. No one cheered. Suddenly, from the balcony, a little boy stood up and shouted, “Mommy, I think you are wonderful!” Everyone turned to the balcony, saw the little boy’s smile, and then broke into cheers at the same time. Dopamine Dressing
Have you seen “dopamine (多巴胺) dressing” on your social media? It’s one of the most popular fashion trends for 2023.
First created by US fashion psychologist Dawnn Karen in her book Dress Your Best Life in 2020, dopamine dressing—to put it simply—is dressing for joy. Through brightness and purity of colors, the dressing is aimed to create joyful emotions for people.
Science showed long ago that different colors can affect people. They could make us feel warmer or cooler and also affect our feelings. For example, bright colors can make people feel lively. Colors like black, white and grey may bring a sense of sadness instead.
Learning how colors work, fashion brands have also used colors in different ways. For example, Versace, an Italian brand, added the idea of dopamine dressing to their clothes in 2021. It said: “This can spread fun and positive energy to the world through fashion.” In the last few years, the pandemic has put everything into question. “Usually, we’re dressing for external factors—the weather, other people and special events. During the pandemic, there was a change. Since no one was around to tell you what to wear, you let yourself find styles that make yourself happy,” Karen told TODAY.
Now, many people take this style to fight back bad feelings and show themselves. “I’ve seen people who are very shy put on colorful clothes and become ... free,” Karen said. “Their whole mood changes when they wear clothes that show who they really are.”
1.When did the phrase “dopamine dressing” first appear?
2.How does dopamine dressing make people happy?
3.What colors should you avoid if you are sad?
4.Why did Versace add dopamine dressing to their clothes in 2021?
5.What do you think of the dopamine dressing style?

Although it happened over 10 years ago, I still remember the moment clearly, I had ordered a drink at a mall in Beijing. When it was ready, the server handed me a cup with laowai written on it, meaning“foreigner”.
It was my second day in China, and this marked the first at different places when I would be called a laowai in public. What does it feel like to be called a laowai?
As someone who doesn’t like being in the spotlight (聚光灯), walking down the street and suddenly hearing someone say to their friend, “Look, a laowai”, is not a pleasant experience. It just makes you feel awkward and draws unnecessary attention.
As much as I dislike being singled out, I also try to understand. China is not a nation like Australia, where I’m from. So. for many Chinese people, seeing a foreigner is still a big deal. When I’m in a place in China with few foreigners, even I sometimes can’t help but point out to my friends that there’s another foreigner nearby, I just make sure to do it carefully!
My Chinese friends also tell me that laowai is a more welcome term than waiguoren because lao adds a touch of respect and friendship. I’ve never felt it came from a place of rudeness or disrespect. The longer I live here, the more China feels like home, and the more I just want to “fit in”. And that, I think, is something beautiful.
1.What does laowai mean?
2.How does the writer feel when being called laowai?
3.What would you say when you see a foreigner? Why?

Imagine you are walking through deep snow. As you walk, you leave footprints where you’ve been. That’s what happens when you are using technology equipment, such as computers and mobile phones. You leave your digital footprint and it will never disappear.
Here are reasons why your digital footprint should matter to you.
How people see you
Of course, you have nothing to hide, but if people get information about you, they might judge you from the information you have left online. For example, you make a bad joke online. Years later, it’s found by the university you are applying to, and they don’t think it’s funny. Maybe they decide you are not the “right” kind of person for them.
Your private information
Not everything can be shared with everyone. For example, you might share your school reports with your parents, but keep them secret to your e-friends. If you share them on the Internet, they will not be a secret any more. Therefore, to protect your privacy (隐私), remember to put out less information online.
Keeping your money safe
There are plenty of people looking at information about you, and some of them want to steal it from you. So you shouldn’t write bank details, card numbers or passwords in emails or text messages.
In all the message is: No one can go online without leaving his digital footprint, but with care, you can control it.
1.When do you leave digital footprint?
2.How many reasons are mentioned in the passage?
3.What should we do to protect our privacy?
4.What shouldn’t be written in emails or text messages to keep our money safe?
5.How can you go online safely? (请自拟一句话作答)

The first time he saw my airplane, for example (I shall not draw my airplane; that would be much too difficult for me), he asked me, “What is that object?”
“That is not an object. It flies. It is an airplane. It is my airplane.” And I was proud to have him learn that I could fly. He cried out, then, “What! You dropped down from the sky?”
“Yes,” I answered, modestly (谦虚地).
“Oh! That is funny!” And the little prince broke into a lovely peal (轰然大笑) of laughter, which made me very uncomfortable. I like my bad luck to be taken seriously.
Then he added, “So you, too, come from the sky! ______?” “My planet? Do you come from another planet?” I asked.
But he did not reply. He tossed (摇摆) his head gently, without taking his eyes from my plane.
“It is true that on that you can’t have come from very far away...” And he sank into a reverie (沉思), which lasted a long time. Then, taking the sheep I draw out of his pocket, be started thinking.
You can imagine how my curiosity was aroused (引起) by this half-confidence about the “other planets”. I made a great effort, therefore, to find out more on this subject.
“My little man, where do you come from? What is this ‘where I live,’ of which you speak? Where do you want to take your sheep?”
After a reflective silence he answered, “The thing that is so good about the box you have given me is that at night he can use it as his house.” “That is so,” I replied, “and if you are good I will draw a string (绳子) for you, too, so that you can tie the sheep during the day, and a post to tie him to.” But the little prince seemed shocked by this offer.

When Bassanio visited Shylock, he asked Shylock to lend him three thousand gold coins and said he would pay it back in three months. “How do I know you can pay it back?” asked Shylock. “My friend Antonio will help me. If I do not pay you in three months, he will do it for me,” Bassanio said. Shylock turned to smile. Perhaps this would be a chance.
So Shylock went to visit Antonio at once. When seeing him, Shylock couldn’t help thinking how much he hated him. However, he did not show his hatred. He tried to be friendly. “It’s three thousand gold coins for three months, isn’t it?” Antonio and Bassanio agreed. “What interest will you pay?” Shylock asked. Before long, Antonio and Shylock were arguing about interest. Antonio called Shylock some bad names. Bassanio was worried and stopped Antonio.
Antonio said sorry to Shylock. “If you lend us this money,” pleased Antonio, “I will not call you bad names.”
Shylock pretended to be surprised. “Come with me to the judge,” said Shylock, “so that he can write the contract. I will lend you the money for three months. You will pay no interest. Just for fun, however, let’s agree that if you do not pay me on time, you will give me one pound of your flesh from wherever I choose to take it!”
Antonio agreed. He was certain that he was able to pay back the money on time. “My ships come back a whole month before we have to pay the money.”

3.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

Saturday was the day of Becky’s picnic. Becky’s mother prepared the picnic food. No adults went with the children, just some young teachers. They all met at Judge Thatcher’s house and then they went on the ferry together.
They played games at the wooded place where the ferry stopped. Then there was the picnic meal, and finally a visit to some nearby caves. It was quite late when they started back towards the town.
Huck was already on duty watching the tavern. He heard the door closing softly. Two men walked past him, and one had something under his arm. It must be the box! It was too late to call Tom now, so Huck decided to follow them. They went up Cardiff Hill and down the other side into the dark trees. Then they stopped. Huck heard Indian Joe’s voice just in front of him.
‘Widow Douglas has got guests — there are lights on!’
‘Let’s go back,’ said the other man.
‘Go back? I’m going to leave this country forever and this is my last chance to get my revenge (报仇) on her. I’m not interested in her money — you can have it. But her husband jailed me many times for being homeless and whipped me in front of the whole town. He’s dead, but I’ll take revenge on her!’
‘Let’s start now!’
“No, we must wait until the guests have gone and the lights are out.”
Huck listened in horror. Then he walked backwards very carefully until he was a good distance from the two men. Then he ran down the hill until he reached the Welshman’s house. He banged (猛敲) on the door. The old man put his head out of the window.
“What’s all that noise? What do you want?”
‘Let me in — quickly! I’ll tell you everything!’ The door opened and Huck told his story. Three minutes later the old man and his sons were up the hill walking quietly. After a silence there was a sudden explosion of guns and a cry. Huck ran back down the hill as fast as he could.

China is quickly becoming the fashion capital. Thanks to social media and young customers, China is preferring to develop its own style, Chinese style. And there have been some achievements for the past few years. There is even a name for it: China-Chic.
Maybe you have heard of it by chance. China-Chic is the result of young people’s interests in Chinese culture and things. It’s reported that 68 percent of young Chinese, especially those between the ages of 20-25, say they prefer products made in China to those made abroad.
They are now prouder of “Chinese style”.
A 25-year-old vlogger (视频博主) named Cai Qian spent 15 days making a golden mask, which is really similar to the ancient mask found at Sanxingdui site in Sichuan. His video has drawn over 11 million viewers. And later, he recreated another thing from the same 3,000-year-old site. This made him get over 7 million viewers again.
One of the reasons why this is happening is the development of e-commerce (电子商务) and social media, which gives sellers a direct chance to communicate with their customers. Now people can learn about the Chinese styles and buy something which they are interested in easily.
So, what is China-Chic, really? Well, it’s bright and colorful. We will see more red and gold in China than in the fashion capitals of London, Paris and New York. And of course, there is the love of beauty which is deeply included in Chinese culture. I think China-Chic will become more and more popular around the world.

During the Jin Dynasty (265-420), there was a child named Che Yin. He was smart and loved to read. He grew up in a poor family and couldn’t afford lamp oil to study at night.
One night, he saw fireflies (萤火虫) outside his house and came up with an idea. He caught some fireflies in a cloth bag and hung the bag up as a lamp. It was said that he spent all of his summer nights reading like this.
Another child named Sun Kang who lived during the same period also loved reading. One night during winter, Sun used up all of his lamp oil and couldn’t study at night. When he suddenly woke up at midnight, he saw the snow reflecting the moonlight outside his house. His first thought was “Oh, I can use the reflected light to read!” He took out his books and read, even though he was freezing cold.
Both of these kids later became successful government officials. People were touched by their hardworking spirit and their stories inspired (启发) the Chinese idiom nangyingyingxue (囊萤映雪), or “to read by the light of bagged fireflies or the reflected light of show”.
In the past, people had a harder time studying than we do now. They had to copy books by hand because books were rare back then. For poor families, paper and writing brushes were too expensive to afford. Students even had to travel over mountains and rivers in order to find a good teacher. However, these conditions did not stop young minds from pursuing (追求) knowledge.

2.What did Sun Kang use to read outside?
3.Did Che Yin and Sun Kang achieve success when they grew up?

Hello, I’m David Smith. Now I’d like to share with you the story of how music has had a strong influence on my life.
Have you ever faced a time when things looked dark and you had no hope at all? Two years ago, I had a pain on my body all the time. So I went to the doctor. I was told I had a serious illness which was difficult to cure. And I thought I didn’t have much longer to live. I was very afraid and I felt so lonely and sad.

John A.Logan once said, “Music is the medicine of the mind.” And it’s true. Music helped me get well and come back to life.
Of course, I hope none of you have to experience the same kind of pain that I did. However, we all have some periods when we feel sad or lonely. During those times, music can help you in the same way that it helped me. I hope all of you will value music and make it a part of your life.

Chinese people like the red colour a lot. Even now, Chinese people like to call ourselves Chizi, meaning the red descendant (子孙).
Red represents the motherland and authority (权威). Official uniforms of the Tang Dynasty were red. In the Qing Dynasty, red was used on official caps to show different rankings (等级). As we know, the Five-starred Red Flag was first raised on October 1st. 1949. Even nowadays, headlines of official documents (文件) are painted in red. This is why they are called red-head documents.
For ordinary people, red stands for happiness. For example, the word “double happiness” used for weddings is red. The bride (新娘) wears red clothes which are different from the white gowns of the west. During the Chinese Spring Festival, people will give red packets to the children to express good wishes. Couplets (对联) hanging on both sides of the doors are written in red. The word red equals beauty. The expression “hongyan” meaning red colour is a synonym (代名词) of a beautiful girl. Red is also one of the most popular words used in the names of Chinese women. But in traffic lights red means stop driving. This is how the westerners like to use the red colour. It is because red is very bright, and is good for warning purposes. But it doesn’t really have any negative (负面的) meanings.

3.What are official documents called when the headlines are painted in red?

What’s the first thing that comes into your mind when you think of wheat straw (稻草)? Most people would probably see it as a pile of waste in a farmer’s field. However, Wu Cui, an intangible cultural inheritor (非遗传承人), can turn the straw into beautiful artworks.
The earliest straw-weaving (编织) works were found at Hemudu Cultural Ruins (遗迹), a Neolithic cultural site in Zhejiang Province. This discovery means a lot to Chinese traditional culture. The Book of Rites also records that there were already mats (垫子) made of grass and professional straw-weaving craftsmen (工匠) during the Zhou Dynasty.
Straw weaving is a method of making daily items or artworks. It was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2008.
Wu explains the process of straw weaving: choosing from materials is the first step of a process that may take several weeks, or even months to complete. You need to draw the piece on paper, which requires drawing skills. Next comes weaving, shaping and preserving of the work. Even by finishing that process, it does not mean that you will always create a good piece of work, and the hardest part is to make it lifelike.
In the past, straw items could be found almost in every family in the countryside, in the form of straw hats and straw shoes, because they were practical in everyday life. But with the development of industry, many of these products are made in factories. This makes people gain little money, and there are only about 100 people joining in the work across the country.
Wu says to a news reporter that more craftsmen should work together to make a difference to the spread of the traditional culture. Many hands make light work.
1.What may come into most people’s mind when thinking of wheat straw?
2.Where were the earliest straw-weaving works found?
3.How long may it take to choose from materials?
4.What is the hardest part of straw weaving?
5.What other advice would you give to craftsmen to spread the traditional culture?

“Have you heard of Flint?” Dr Livesey asked Squire Trelawney.
“Yes, I have!” the squire replied. “He was one of the most dangerous pirates that ever sailed the seas. He only cared about money and everyone was afraid of him. No one knows where he buried his treasure.”
“Maybe these papers give a clue,” said the doctor. And we opened the captain’s papers. Inside there was a detailed map. It showed an island, about nine miles long and five across. It had two good natural harbours and a hill in the centre, marked Spy-glass Hill. There were three crosses in red, two in the northern part and one in the south-west. Beside the last cross were the words: Most of treasure here.
On the back of the map was this information:
The treasure is by a tall tree. Spy-glass Hill is behind you to the north, Skeleton Island is below you to the south-east. The silver is in the north-east and the guns are in the north-west.
John Flint
Both the squire and Dr Livesey were very excited.
“Livesey,” said the squire, “we must stop work immediately. Tomorrow I’ll go to Bristol. In ten days we’ll have the best ship and crew in England. Hawkins will come as the cabin-boy. You will be the ship’s doctor. I can be the captain. We will have a good journey, and easily find the treasure. Then we’ll have enough money to live happily ever after.”
“Of course I’ll come with you,” said the doctor. “But we must be careful. The men who attacked the inn know about this map. They are dangerous and they also want the treasure. None of us must say a word to anyone about what we’ve found.”

Mark Twain once said everybody talks about the weather, but no one does anything about it. This was true in his day. But it may not be the case in today’s world. In fact, humans have found many different ways to control the weather.
Cloud seeding (云催化) is a kind of technology that can control rain. It is done by spreading chemicals, like dry ice or silver iodide (碘化银) inside of clouds, either by rocket or airline. This changes the amount of water inside the cloud, which helps to control the amount of rain, the time when it rains and even where it rains.
This technology has helped to solve droughts. It has also played a key role during important events. For example, China used cloud seeding in Beijing just before the 2018 Olympic Games in order to stop rain from falling during the event.
However, scientists are still debating how to use this technology. On one hand, it is believed that it might have side effects. For example, silver iodide may be bad for the environment. On the other hand, no two clouds are the same so every new experiment introduces new conditions.
In addition to controlling rain, scientists have also tried to find ways to weaken storms and hurricanes (飓风). Scientists at the US National Hurricane Centre Headquarters think it might be possible to control hurricanes by using lasers (激光). Others believe that burning petroleum (石油) in a hurricane’s path could slow the storms down.
1.Can people control the weather in some ways now?
2.What is cloud seeding?
3.How many aspects (方面) can the amount of water inside the cloud influence?
4.Why are scientists still debating how to use Cloud Seeding?
5.Do you think humans should control the weather? Why or why not?

In all this time we did not see the captain. We had been on the Nautilus for six months and traveled seventeen thousand leagues.

Life is full of surprises and you never know how things will turn out. Xie Yi, a 48-year-old Chinese chemist (化学家), knows this very well.
On March 18, Xie received the L’Oreal-UNESCO Women in Science Award for her achievements in chemistry (化学). It is generally known as the female (女性的) “Nobel Prize” in science.
Xie is a professor at the University of Science and Technology of China. She has discovered new nano materials (纳米材料) that can efficiently (有效地) turn heat (热能) into electricity (电流).
But unlike many other scientists, chemistry wasn’t one of Xie’s favorite subjects when she was young, Anhui Daily reported.
Born in Anhui province, Xie was crazy about physics in high school. She always moved to the front row in the classroom to get a better listen.

Then one day, I had to go through a two-hour medical treatment. The doctor wanted me to relax, so she played some music for me, and one of the songs was Happy, which has been my favorite song till now. This positive (积极的) and uplifting song gave me strength and helped me go through the darkness. From then on, I began to listen to music all the time.

【答案】1.Yes, they can. 2.It’s a kind of technology that can control rain. 3.3/Three. 4.Because it might have side effects./Every new experiment introduces new conditions. 5.Yes. Because humans can reduce natural disasters.

We were trapped (困住) in the ice. We worked hard. By the next morning, the hole was deeper but now the sides of the tunnel were narrowing. We worked harder. The hole grew deeper, but the air in the Nautilus was very bad. Then, the captain had a new idea. He heated water and pumped it into the hole. This stopped the sides from narrowing, and the men worked as quickly as they could to dig the hole deeper.
It was a terrible night. We had so little air that everybody had a headache. We could hardly breathe. Then, the captain drove the Nautilus into the hole. The ice was broken. Suddenly, the Nautilus was free. It sped quickly northwards still under the ice. We still had no air. My face was purple, and my lips were blue. I could not breathe. I could not see or hear. I was going to die! Ned and Conseil found some air in one of the diving tanks. They gave it to me. After the Nautilus broke the ice, air rushed into the submarine and we could breathe again. Ned, Conseil, and I rushed onto the deck. We breathed and breathed, and I thanked my friends for saving me with the air in the tanks.
The Nautilus continued sailing north for several days. We were heading back to the Atlantic. Ned was more determined (决心) than ever to run away, but we did not know our destination. The captain did not appear for many days. We saw Tierra del Fuego and the Falkland Islands. We sailed up the coast of South America, past the mouth of the Amazon, and across the equator. In all this time we did not see the captain. We had been on the Nautilus for six months and traveled seventeen thousand leagues.
