1. suppose v. 假设；认为

【教材原句】I suppose everyone has something they don’t like about themselves.

我们每个人都有不喜欢自己的地方。

【常见用法】

（1）suppose作动词，指根据已掌握的信息等进行推测。“suppose+that从句”表示“猜测……；认为……”，从句变否定句时通常否定前移。

I don’t suppose (that) he is right.

我认为他是不对的。

（2）Be supposed to 意为“应该”，后接动词原形，相当于should。

The students aren’t supposed to take the books out of the library.

学生们不应该把这些书拿出图书馆。

The train was supposed to arrive ten minutes ago.

那辆列车应该在10分钟之前到达。

 

2. cover v. 遮盖

【教材原句】Therefore I always kept my hair long to cover it until that day.

因此，我直到那天一直留着长发遮盖它（胎记）。

【经典搭配和例句】

(1)  Cover A with B 用B盖住A

She covered her face with her hands.

她双手掩面。

(2)  be covered by/with...被……覆盖

The ground is covered by/with thick fallen leaves.

地面被厚厚的落叶覆盖。

【联想拓展】

(1)  cover作动词时，还可以表示“包括；涉及；走完（一段路程）”。

This programme covers a lot of hot topics.

这个节目涉及很多热门话题。

We covered thirty miles yesterday.

昨天我们走了30英里（英里=1609米）。

(2)  cover 作名词时，可意为“封面”。

Don’t judge a book by its cover.

不要以貌取人。

 

3. instead adv. 代替……；而不是……

【教材原句】Instead of looking away, Maddie studied my face.

麦迪没有移开目光，而是端详着我的脸。

【常见用法】instead是副词，常用在句首或者句末。

(1)  I don’t like blue. Give me a red one instead.

我不喜欢蓝色。还是给我一个红的吧。

(2)  The TV programme is boring. Let’s play games instead.

这个电视节目很无聊。咱们还是打游戏吧。
