Part A

一、阅读理解

Sinbad was a merchant’s （商人）son.His father died  and he left his son all his money.Sinbad did not have to work so he spent his time playing games and talking with his friends.Soon most of the money was gone.

Sinbad thought,“I must earn more money.I will buy some goods and take them to another country.There I will sell them.”

Sinbad bought many things.He packed them carefully in boxes.Then he went to the harbor（海港）There were many ships in the harbor.Sinbad chose one that was going to many countries.

“I have goods to sell,”he told the captain of the ship.”I will pay you well to take me with you.”The captain agreed to take Sinbad,and the next day the ship sailed from the harbor.

The ship visited many countries.In each country Sinbad sold goods and bought more goods to sell.For many months he bought and sold goods and became rich.

Then the ship came to an island.It was a strange island.There were no trees or plant on it.Sinbad and some of the sailors went by small boat to the island.They walked about the island.

“This is very strange island,”Sinbad thought.

“Nothing grows on it.”Suddenly he heard a shout.He looked back at the ship.The captain was shouting and waving.“Come back!Come back!”he was shouting.“You are not on an island.You’re walking on the back of a giant fish.”

Sinbad and the other sailors ran to their small boat.But they were too late.The giant fish dived,and they were all thrown into the water.

Sinbad swam for many hours.“I cannot swim forever,”he thought.“Soon I shall drown”

Then a large piece of wood floated near him.It was a piece of the small boat.He took hold of the piece of wood.He held on to it and floated for many days.Then he came to an island.He walked out of the sea onto the beach.There were men with horses on the beach.

“Who are you?Where are you from?”one of the men asked him.

“My name is Sinbad,and I am a merchant,”he said.“I thought I was standing on an island,but it was a giant fish.It dived and threw me into the water.I survived by holding onto a piece of wood.””We will take you to our master,King Mihrjan.He will help you return to your own country.”

King Mihrjan was kind to Sinbad.He gave him food and clothes and a place to  1  .He gave him work.

The Story of the First Old Man and of the Hind（鹿）

I am now going to begin my story(said the old man),so please attend.

This hind that you see with me is my wife.We have no children of our own,therefore I adopeted（收养）the son of a favourite slave,and decided to make him my heir（继承人）.

My wife,however,took a great dislike to both mother and child,which she concealed（隐瞒） from me till too late.  1  .Before I went I entrusted to my wife’s keeping both the mother and child,and begged her to take care of them during my absence,which lasted a whole year.During this time she studied magic in order to carry out her wicked scheme.When she had learnt enough she took my son into a distant place and changed into a calf（小牛）.Then she gave him to my steward（管家），and told him to look after a calf she had bought.She also changed the slave into a cow,which she sent to my steward.

2  .“Your slave is dead,”she said,“and as for your son,I have not seen him for two months,and I do not know where he is.”

I was grieved to hear of my slave’s death,but as my son had only disappeared,I thought I should soon find him.Eight months,however,passed,and still no tidings（消息，音信） of him;then the feast of Bairam（拜兰节）came.

  3  .He did so.The cow that he brought was my unfortunate slave.I bound her,but just as I was about to kill her she began to low most piteously and I saw that her eyes were streaming with tears.It seemed to me most extraordinary,and feeling a movement of pity,I ordered the steward to lead her away and bring another.My wife,who was present,scoffed at（嘲笑，鄙视）my compassion,“What are you doing?”she cried.“Kill this cow.It is the best we have to sacrifice.”

“Take her away,”I said to the steward,“and kill her;I cannot.”

“Keep her for yourself,”I said to the steward,“and if you have a fat calf,bring that in her stead.”

  5  .It tried hard to break its cord and come to me.It threw itself at my feet,with its head on the ground,as if it wished to excite my pity,and to beg me not to take away its life.

I was even more surprised and touched at this action than I had been at the tears of the cow.
