Humans are getting away from the nature gradually because of the developing technology. But now Digital Technology is offering us an opportunity to listen to the sounds in the nature in powerful ways, making us get closer to the worlds of animals and plants.
All around the nature, there are sounds that we struggle to pick up and understand. Elephants, for example, communicate with each other using infrasound, a sound far below our human hearing range. Coral in the ocean also communicates with each other through sound waves, with one purpose of attracting baby coral to areas where it can successfully grow. This is a shocking fact as coral doesn’t have any ears!
To pick up sounds humans are normally unable to hear, scientists have placed listening devices in these environments. Researchers have attached (连接) tiny microphones to honeybees and turtles, and stuck listening posts that can receive different sound waves from coral reefs and trees. These devices are controlled by computers and networked with digital sensors and satellites. When interconnected, these digital devices work like a hearing aid: enabling humans to observe and record nature’s sounds beyond the limits of our own listening ability. After the sounds are recorded, AI is then able to determine their meanings.
With this technology, humans can not only understand the animals, but also communicate back to them. For example, a team of researchers in Germany decoded the honeybees’ behavior with AI. Then they taught tiny robots how to do the honeybee dance. Using these dancing machines, the scientists were able to order the honeybees to stop moving, and to communicate where to fly to collect a specific nectar. In addition to the possibility of speaking with animals, the research could also be used to create a form of healing for animals and plants. That’s to say, in the near future, scientists might be able to get coral to grow in certain areas by playing “healthy reef” sounds, which could help some of the damage we have caused to become healthy again.
Now, Digital Technology provides a new way for humans to listen to the lively sounds all around us. The dream of allowing humans to communicate with different animals and plants throughout the nature is being on its way.

Boxing is an exciting sport. How much do you know about it?
In boxing, two people wear gloves and try to hit each other in a ring. Boxers train hard to get fast and strong. In a boxing match, a boxer has to be ready to move at any time. They use their fists (拳头) to hit the head, body or arms of the other boxer.
One exciting part of boxing is the plan. A boxer has to think of when to hit, when to defend (防守) and how to outsmart the other boxer. That’s not easy.
There is a funny film called YOLO 《热辣滚烫》about boxing. It tells a story about a girl named Du Leying. She spends a lot of time staying at home. She plans to make a change and she meets a boxing coach. With the coach’s help, Du tries hard to become a boxer. She faces many challenges, but she never gives up. The film shows that if you keep working hard and never give up, your dreams can come true.

An environmental group in Colombia is leading a project to save wild areas in the San Lucas Mountains with the help of coffee growers.
Since 2016, San Lucas areas have been threatened (威胁) by mining and coca (古柯) planting. Gold miners and coca growers make more money than coffee farms. Now the group WebConserva helps link coffee farmers with coffee processors from around the country in order that they can earn more. At the same time coffee farms can serve as boarders around the forests to protect the biodiversity (生物多样性) within.
To date, the project includes 10 families who farm 400 hectares of coffee plants. WebConserva said it hopes, in time, 200 families will be included. At that level, 20,000 hectares of untouched forest could be protected. The families promise not to cut down trees to expand their crops or to hunt wild animals. In return, they receive $300 for 125 kilograms of coffee.
Arcadio Barajas is among those taking part. His coffee farm sets up a barrier between cattle farms and forests where wild animals live, thus reducing the possibility of conflict (纷争) between cattle farmers and wild animals. “Cutting down the forest to plant coca and killing wildlife were against my faith, and now I feel that growing coffee lets me be a good guard of the land,” he said.
Arnobis Romero is a former-coca grower and miner. “Many families depended on illegal activities to support their children years ago. Now, we feel it a duty to look after this biodiversity and leave it for future generations,” he said. Activists want San Lucas to be protected as a national park, but the process has been slow. Carlos Valderrama, director of WebConserva, hopes the project can build production system that will last far into the future. “It protects forests, biodiversity and ecosystems (生态系统) at the same time as improving coffee growers’ quality of life,” he said.
1.What does the underlined word “they” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Coffee farmers. B.WebConserva members.
C.Gold miners. D.Coca growers.
2.How does WebConserva members save wild areas in San Lucas?
A.By increasing cattle farms. B.By setting up a barrier.
C.By developing gold mining. D.By encouraging coffee farming.
3.What does the author want to show by mentioning Arcadio Barajas and Arnobis Romero?
A.Families have enough money for their children.
B.The project will attract more and more families.
C.Coffee farming changed the lives of the former coca growers.
D.Coffee planting will last for several generations.
4.What can be inferred from the text?
A.Families protecting wildlife will get very rich.
B.San Lucas will develop into a national park in the near future.
C.Gold mining and coca farming have been replaced rapidly.
D.WebConserva benefits ecosystems and local people’s life.

At M. E. School in Tucson, Arizona, raising fish at school was one small answer to a big problem: many people in the neighborhood didn’t have enough food. The students could eat breakfast and lunch at school, but their families didn’t always have enough money for dinner. Buying fresh foods, such as vegetables and meat, was difficult. The teachers had an idea: could the students raise food at school for the neighborhood?
It wouldn’t be easy. There isn’t enough water in Tucson because it is in a desert. Soil doesn’t always have the nutrients (营养) that plants need to grow, so the students would need natural helpers.
To solve the problem, the school set up a system in which fish poop makes plants grow better and the plants’ roots clean the water in the fish tank. Students do research on the fish. “I did a task in the project on how much tilapia eat.” says Emmanuel. “We wanted to see if they preferred to eat in warm or cold water. They liked warm water better.”
Fish aren’t the only animals that help students feed their neighbors. Chickens lay eggs. Bees also come to help turn flowers into vegetables.
When the students have raised enough food, it’s time for Market Day. Vegetables are given to people in the neighborhood for free. Students sell eggs and tilapia to raise money for seeds, fish food and chicken food.
“People don’t have a lot of money, so it’s a nice dream we have to give them food. It’s also a chance to be healthy and eat better.” says Emmanuel. “We can plant good food and have fun while we’re doing something important,” says Blanks. “I’m so happy to be at this school.”
1.Why did the teachers at M. E. School decide to raise food for the neighborhood?
① The families in the neighborhood were poor.
② People there wanted a market for fresh foods.
③ Students wanted to learn how to grow vegetables.
④ The natural condition isn’t proper for growing plants.
A.①③ B.②④ C.①④ D.②③
2.What can we know from the last two paragraphs?
A.The project has been widely spread. B.Eggs and tilapia are sold at a good price.
C.The project brings the students a feeling of pride. D.Students have raised enough money to buy vegetables.
3.What is the best title of the passage?
A.A Story of Helping the Poor B.An Experience in the Desert
C.A Project from Seeds to Sales D.A Dream of Giving Vegetables

If you’re missing an amazing party for your aunt’s birthday that you promised your mum you would attend, you’ll probably get “FOMO” —the fear of missing out.
It’s impossible to attend every social event in the calendar, but sometimes it really annoys you when you have prior (先前的) engagements (约定) and you know you’re missing out on something great.
But some people feel the opposite. Rather than feeling FOMO, they take joy in missing out. They don’t feel the need to attend everything, and instead find comfort in either sticking to their original plans or staying at home alone.
In a blog post, Kristen Fuller said “JOMO” is basically the “emotionally intelligent antidote to “FOMO” and it is “about being present and being satisfied with where you are in life.” Some people are born with it, others learn to accept it.
Here are the different ways JOMO can show itself:
1. Living in the moment
If you constantly worry about missing out on something, you cannot enjoy yourself wherever you are. This isn’t a healthy way to live your life, and Fuller wrote that you shouldn’t compare yourself to other people’s lives or experiences.
“JOMO allows us to be who we are in the present moment, which is the secret to finding happiness,” she said. “When you free up that competitive and anxious space in your brain, you have so much more time, energy and emotion to realize your true priorities (首要事情).”
2. Switching off
In an article, writer Justin Bariso discovered JOMO after he published his first book. He found it hard to switch off, worrying that his editor (编辑) would contact him for rewrites, or he would miss an important email. It wasn’t until he was abroad with his family and his daughter asked him to play that be thought: “What am I doing?”
“Did I really want to go to Starbucks to sit in front of my computer, responding to emails from people I barely know, when instead I could be spending time with my family on a beautiful beach?” he wrote.
3. Enjoying your own company
Some people are simply born with the ability to switch off, and not worry about what they could be missing out on. For them, being alone is important, and it doesn’t matter if they’re missing out on the party of the year.
Others don’t necessarily need the space on a biological level, but they don’t feel the need to compare their lives to others. These are the people who aren’t involved in social media, and find joy in what they have, rather than focusing on what they don’t.
1.Which of the following proves that you feel JOMO?
A.You spare a day for yourself every week to do some reading and writing.
B.You constantly check your emails to make sure you keep up with your work.
C.You cancel your original appointment and attend a party later.
D.You always work hard in order to create a better future for your family.
2.What does the underlined word “antidote” mean in the article?
A.A requirement to improve the situation.
B.A way to take away the bad effects of something.
C.An experiment to test the effect of something.
D.A method to keep a balance between two things.
3.What is the cause of FOMO?
A.Some people were born with big competitive space in their brains.
B.People are not able to switch off the electronic equipment they use.
C.People tend to focus on what others have instead of what they own.
D.Some people spend too much time making friends on social media.
4.Which of the following may the writer disagree with?
A.FOMO may cause health problems in one way or another.
B.The more activities we participate in, the less anxious we will be.
C.We can learn to get JOMO if we are not born with it.
D.We should cut down unnecessary socializing (社交) and live our own life.
5.Which is the proper title of this article?
A.Differences between FOMO and JOMO
B.Your Choice: FOMO or JOMO
C.JOMO: A Way to Deal with Fear
D.JOMO: Find Happiness in Not Being Involved

Getting hugged (拥抱) by someone you care about can be a wonderful experience. Research has shown that hugs can strengthen our social connections, improve our emotional (情感的) state and reduce feelings of loneliness. They can even help to lower stress levels and improve our health.
Unfortunately, not everyone has the chance to receive hugs when they need them. So, how can this problem be solved? One idea that scientists have suggested is to develop social robots that can hug people. They think these robots could probably provide lonely people with the benifits (好处) of getting hugged.
However, creating a hug robot that is well-accepted by people and reduce stress is no simple task. For example, if the design of the robot looks intimidating, people may feel uncomfortable about hugging it. Therefore, it is important for researchers to have further studies on the design which should include acceptance and comfort.
A recent study published in the International Journal of Social Robotics focused on the development of Moffully-Ⅱ, a newly developed hug robot. It looks like a large, human-shaped teddy bear and stands at two meters tall. During a hug, it is able to move its arms and make different gestures (手势). Copying the actions that humans usually do during hugs, such as tapping someone on the back, is necessary for making the hug feel real.
During the study, volunteers who received hugs from Moffully-Ⅱ showed more love for hugs with gestures than those without gestures. They sensed the robot as friendlier and safer when it made gestures, and they found the hugs were more enjoyable in general.
While some people may feel uncomfortable with the idea of hugging a robot instead of a human, hug robots offer those who are in need of hugs another way to meet their needs. This includes those in old people’s homes who hope for hugs, even if they are provided by a robot.

People know animals do have feelings, but they are not sure if these feelings are correctly understood. In recent years, scientists have done research about the feelings of cows, frogs and pandas. ▲ It says that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls.
The researchers put a bowl behind a door. Inside the bowl, sometimes, there was something chickens love to eat, such as rice or insects. Sometimes, there was nothing. When the chickens saw food behind. the door, they seemed happy and produced fast and loud sounds, known as food calls. When there wasn’t food, the chickens made low and long noises to express disappointment. The researchers recorded all these sounds and studied their waves.
Then the researchers chose 16 recordings of such chicken noises. Half were from the chickens seeing the food and half were from the chickens finding no food. The recordings were played to 194 volunteers. Sixty-nine percent of the volunteers correctly understood whether the chickens were feeling happy or not, and some of them even had no experience of taking care of chickens.
The result shows that humans have the natural ability to understand the feelings of chickens. Hopefully, this finding can bring about new technology to help with chicken-raising, a big industry in many countries. Some scientists are already working on a smart computer program that can identify chickens’ feelings. This is good news for farmers who want to make the birds happier and healthier.

Should Children Be Allowed to Get Bored?
Children need time to stand and stare (凝视) . They should be allowed to get bored so that they can develop their ability to be creative.
Children are expected by their parents to be reading a textbook all the time. However, research shows that it may hamper the development of their imagination, while boredom can give them opportunities (机会) to develop creativity.
Boredom is often linked (联系) with loneliness, but a writer named Meera Syal said boredom had helped her in developing her mind. She told researchers about her childhood. Having few things to do, Syal often talked with her neighbors. She also tried to do things like learning to bake cakes.
“But importantly, I thought and wrote a lot, because I was bored,” Syal said. She kept a diary, filling her time with short stories and poems she made up.
Grayson Perry, an artist, grew up in a family with little money. He enjoyed himself by making up stories, drawing pictures for his stories and reading many books in the library. Bored but free, he spent hours looking out of the window, watching the changing clouds and seasons. Perry filled up his free time with what he liked. He became creative, because he could think freely. Dr. Belton is an expert (专家) on the effects of emotions (情绪) on learning. “Boredom could be an uncomfortable feeling,” she said. “But some young people cannot deal with that boredom creatively. So sometimes they may break a classroom window, or drive a car out for a mad race.” Usually, when children have nothing to do, they would turn on the TV, the computer, or the phone. Their time on these things has increased (增加), yet they need to have time to think about their experiences through play or just watching the world around them.
It is this kind of thinking that can inspire (激发) the imagination. On the other hand, the TV or phone may cut short the thinking process (过程) . That can be harmful to the development of creativity. “For developing the ability to be creative,” Dr. Belton advised, “Perhaps we need to stand and stare, and stay off-line from time to time.”
1.What does the word “hamper” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

A.stress the great differences between them
B.introduce a popular writer and a famous artist
C.suggest good ways of going through boredom
D.show effects of boredom on developing creativity
3.The underlined phrase in the last paragraph “stay off-line” probably refers to ________ .
A.not wait in line B.not want to stand in line
C.think freely D.a kind of a transportation system
4.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Boredom provides children with space to think freely.
B.It’s much better for children to be busy than be bored.
C.Boredom helps children deal with difficulties properly.
D.It’s boring for children to think about their experiences.

The Chinese language differs from Western languages in that, instead of an alphabet (字母表), it uses characters (汉字) which stand for ideas, objects or deeds. Chinese words are formed by putting together different characters. In many cases, a single character can also make up a word. As one kind of the most ancient characters, Chinese characters have played an important part in the development of Chinese culture. At first, ancient Sumerian and ancient Egyptian symbols existed (存在), but only Chinese characters are still in use today. The history of the Chinese language can be examined by looking at how these characters developed.
Chinese writing began thousands of years ago. According to an ancient story, a man named Cang Jie invented Chinese writing. One winter day while he was hunting, he saw the footprints of animals in the snow and noticed that the appearance of each one was different. Then he had the idea that he could use different shapes to represent different objects. The first Chinese characters were drawings of physical objects. Some characters have been simplified (简化) and others have been made more difficult over time.
However, as a whole, the characters have developed from drawings into standard forms. The character for a mountain was at first three mountaintops together. This became one mountaintop and three lines, and over time turned into the character used nowadays.
Sometimes to express ideas, some characters were made by putting two or more characters together. For example, “rest” was made up of the characters for a man and a tree. The character “prisoner” was formed with a “man” inside a square. Other characters were developed for directions and numbers. It is easy to distinguish (区别) their meanings by looking at them, for example, the characters for “up” and “down”, which are opposites of each other.
Though these kinds of characters show meanings, one of their shortcomings is that they do not show how they should be pronounced. Therefore, a way was developed to have one part of a character represent the meaning and the other suggest the pronunciation. Many Chinese characters used today were made this way.
In the 1950s the Chinese government introduced simplified Chinese characters in the hope to make learning to read and write more understandable to a large number of people, which would increase literacy (读写能力) across the country. And now they have widespread use in China’s mainland.
1.How did the writer introduce the Chinese characters?
A.By giving examples. B.By providing causes.
C.By expressing opinions. D.By comparing (比较) facts.
2.The sentence “Not all characters were developed from drawings of objects.” would best be placed at the beginning of _________.
A.Paragraph 5 B.Paragraph 4 C.Paragraph 3 D.Paragraph 2
3.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Chinese characters have turned into standard forms, which are easier than before.
B.Chinese characters we use today have been accepted by large numbers of people.
C.Chinese words and English words are both formed by putting alphabets and characters together.
D.Chinese characters existed at the very beginning and are still in use today like other ancient symbols.
4.What might be the best title for the passage?
A.How to form Chinese characters.
B.The history of the Chinese language.
C.The development of Chinese characters.
D.The difference between Chinese and Western language.

You must have read or heard of the sad love story between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu. But can you imagine the two singing opera in English instead of speaking poetic Chinese?
Jia and Lin are two characters from the classic Chinese novel A Dream of Red Mansions (《红楼梦》), written by Cao Xueqin (1715—1763) in the Qing dynasty. Now the book has been made into an English-language opera. After being performed in San Francisco, US, the performance came to Beijing, Changsha and Wuhan.
Most opera’s creators have backgrounds in both Chinese and American cultures, including the director and playwrights. Their understanding of both cultures helped them change a Chinese class into a foreign-language opera.
The book, which covers the rise and fall of the Jia family, has 120 chapters and hundreds characters.
But the opera with David Henry Hwang cut down the number of characters to just seven. Hwang, a Chinese-American, focused on the love story between Jia and Lin and tried to write a heart broking tragedy (悲剧) that everyone would understand.
The art director Timmy Yip, from Hong Kong, tried to help foreign people understand the characters using costumes and stage settings (布景). He compared Lin to water and gave her a light green costume. When Lin showed up on stage, there was usually water around her on the stage.

At M.

1.What does the underlined word “intimidating” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Shy. B.Terrible. C.Calm. D.Energetic.
2.About hug robots, the writer probably supports that ________.
A.they can help to lower people’s stress level and improve health
B.they may help people but cannot replace humans
C.designers should first think about their gestures
D.they may benifit people who are short of hugs
3.What is the best title for the passage?

1.Which of the following can be put in “ ▲ ” in Paragraph 1?
A.A new study adds chickens to the list. B.Scientists know nothing about it.
C.Nobody knows why this happens. D.Humans may not like animals.
2.Which is most probably the sound wave of a happy call by a chicken?
A. B. C. D.
3.What does the underlined word “identify” mean in Paragraph 4?
A.Control. B.Hide. C.Know. D.Hurt.
4.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Chickens’ Food Calls B.Happy Chickens, Sad Chickens
C.Farmers’ Best Choice D.Smart Farmers, Healthy Farmers
【答案】1.A 2.D 3.C 4.B
【导语】本文讲述了科学家研究动物情感的实验,尤其是鸡的情感表达。
1.推理判断题。根据“It says that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls.”可说明研究包括了鸡,所以A选项适合在此处,故选A。
2.推理判断题。根据“When the chickens saw food behind. the door, they seemed happy and produced fast and loud sounds, known as food calls.”可知,当鸡看到食物时,它们会发出快速而响亮的声音,即食物叫声。选项D显示快速重复的波形,与此描述一致。故选D。
3.词义猜测题。根据“This is good news for farmers who want to make the birds happier and healthier.”和上文可知,研究人员希望识别鸡的情感,这样在养殖时,可以让鸟类更快乐、更健康,所以“identify”意为识别或知道,故选C。

A.slow down B.keep up with C.go beyond D.give rise to
2.The writer talks about Syal and Perry to ________ .

When Leon Martin asked for his parents’ advice on how to become a UX designer, they both went silent. “In fact, I had no idea what he was talking about.” said Anne, his mother.
Even when her 18-year-old son explained that it was something about “behind the scenes” online design, his mother was still a bit lost. “I felt like I had totally failed as a parent,” she said. “My job as a parent is to open doors so my children can achieve best of their ability, but how can I do that when I don’t even understand what their dreams are?”
________ Research has found that more than 2/3 of parents in England are now facing the problem that, when their children express interest in job choices, they may know nothing about them. Over 75% of parents feel it is impossible to offer their children good advice in such a fast-changing job market.
Michelle Rea did a survey of over 2,000 parents of secondary school students in England. She found that many parents were afraid their children would just stop talking about their career plans simply because their parents could hardly follow them. “We all know parents’ opinions and suggestions play an important role in shaping their children’s career dreams,” she said. “But we usually depend much on our own experiences. And things have changed so much since most of us were at school.”
Bryony Mathew, writer of the Awesome Career Books, said the world was changing so rapidly that parents should respect their children’s decisions.

A.To give the standard of failed parents.
B.To tell the importance of being a UX designer.
C.To show parents never understand their children.
D.To give an example of a common problem among parents.
2.What should a successful parent be able to do according to Anne?
A.Become a great UX designer. B.Do an excellent job online.
C.Improve their children’s ability. D.Realize their children’s dreams.
3.Which of the following is the best sentence to fill in the blank in Paragraph 3?
A.Anne is not alone. B.Anne has bad luck.
C.This is very strange. D.This is very interesting.
4.What did Michelle Rea’s survey mainly show?
A.Most of the parents in England were facing trouble in accepting new jobs.
B.Parents feared that their children would refuse to share their career dreams.
C.A lot of parents found it difficult to help their children with their education.
D.Children’s career future depended a lot on their parents’working experiences.

【答案】1.A 2.B 3.B 4.C
【导语】本文主要介绍了汉字的发展历史。
1.细节理解题。根据“For example, ‘rest’ was made up of the characters for a man and a tree. The character ‘prisoner’ was formed with a ‘man’ inside a square.”可知作者通过举例来介绍汉字。故选A。
2.推理判断题。根据第二、三段可知,第二段讲述了汉字是从物体的图画演变而来的,第三段介绍了汉字已经从图画发展到标准形式。所以“Not all characters were developed from drawings of objects.并不是所有的汉字都是从物体的图画演变而来的”适合放在第四段,承接第二、三段。故选B。
3.细节理解题。 根据“In the 1950s the Chinese government introduced simplified Chinese characters in the hope to make learning to read and write more understandable to a large number of people, which would increase literacy (读写能力) across the country. And now they have widespread use in China’s mainland.”可知,我们今天使用的汉字已经被很多人所接受。故选B。
4.标题归纳题。本文主要介绍了汉字的发展历史以及重要性,所以“汉字的发展”为标题最合适。故选C。

①Some people think creativity is making something completely new, so they do not think of themselves as creative ones. However, some other people think creativity can just be expressing themselves through everyday acts and they are born creative because it is not an all-or-nothing quality or skill.
②Whether or not we realize it, we all have the ability to express creativity. Sometimes the path to creative productivity is being willing to do something different.
③Are you someone who loves to read comics? Perhaps it is time you create one of your own. Don’t worry if you cannot draw very well or feel that you cannot write humorous reports for characters. Nobody says this is an exam! You only have to please yourself, to gain the satisfaction that you try something new, all on your own. If you feel easy, you can of course share it with our loved ones, or post it on social media.
④Are you someone who likes to express yourself in writing? Try writing a blog. This is like the new version of a diary. In your blog, you can write about your thoughts, opinions and experiences. You can also write stories or plays, if you feel up to it! The blog provides you with a platform to create something new every day, in written forms.
⑤Are you someone who likes to be alone? Now, think about the things that make you happy. Find a small place in your room, or any place in your home, where you can spend time with yourself. It can be a small corner next to your bed or a wall. It can be a poster of your favourite rock star or photos of your friends. You can also pick a guitar if you like to play instruments, or a few storybooks if you love reading. Some of you may like flowers, candles or pretty things. Decorate your area with your favourite things in any way you like. That is creativity! And if you do feel bored with this, you can change, add or remove something.

What’s your dream job? How much do you know about it? A group of students from Tianjin found a very common problem among young teenagers: Most of them have little idea about their career plans as there is too little help from school or family.
To offer teenagers helpful advice on career, the students from Tianjin TEDA NO.1 Middle School started a project called “Dian Zhi Cheng Shi (点职成诗)”. “Our survey shows that 72% of students want to know more about different jobs.
