Different countries celebrate the beginning of a new year in different ways, and at different times on the calendar.
In Western countries, people usually celebrate New Year’s Day at midnight on 31st December. People may go to parties and drink champagne (香槟酒) at midnight. During the first minute of the new year, people cheer and wish each other happiness for the next year. But some countries prefer to celebrate the new year by waking up early to watch the sunrise. They welcome the new year with the first light of the sunrise.
Many countries also do special things to get rid of (摆脱) bad luck at the beginning of the new year. For example, in Ecuador, families make big dolls from old clothes. At midnight, these dolls are burned to show the bad things from the past year are gone. Another common tradition to keep away from bad luck in the new year is throwing things into rivers or the sea.
Other New Year traditions are to bring good luck in the new year. One Spanish tradition for good luck is to eat grapes on New Year’s Day. The more grapes a person eats, the more good luck the person will have in the new year. In the United States, some people eat black-eyed peas for good luck—but to get good luck for a whole year, you have to eat 365 of them! While in France, people eat pancakes for good luck on New Year’s Day.

Dear Jim,
I am writing to tell you one of our traditional festivals. It’s the Mid-Autumn Festival. It’s one of the most important traditional festivals in China, celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month.
This year’s Mid-Autumn Festival was really special for me. First, my mom and I made mooncakes together in the afternoon. We tried making lotus seed paste mooncakes, and even though they weren’t perfectly shaped, they tasted great. Then, in the evening, my whole family sat in the yard, eating mooncakes and fresh fruits while admiring the bright, round moon.
I felt so happy that day. Everything was fun especially sharing laughter with my family under the moon. It made me realize how warm family time is, which is the best part of the festival.
I hope you can come here and experience this wonderful festival.
Yours,
Liu Wei
