①Everything is made of something. Nothing is made of nothing. Chemistry is about the smallest things that other bigger things are made of, and what happens when they change. The word “chemistry” comes from “chemical”. The words you are reading right now are made of ink (墨水), which is written on paper. And the paper is made from crushed wood. Both the ink and the paper are produced (制造) by different chemical changes. A chemical change is what happens when chemicals come together to make other chemicals, which means other things.
②Cooking makes chemical changes. Different ingredients (原料) are made of different chemicals, and when you put them together and cook them in a certain way, the chemicals change into new ones and the different ingredients make something new.
③You can taste the changes. That tomato sauce you’re making is made from tomatoes, onions, garlic, salt and pepper. Those ingredients each have their own chemicals and their own flavors (风味), but the sauce you’ve made is something different. It doesn’t taste like any of those ingredients, and it has its own special flavor. That is because when you mix all the ingredients together, you also mix all the chemicals together. After a chemical change, something new is produced.
④You can smell the changes, too, as they go up into your nose, especially when you forget about your sauce and it doesn’t just cook but burns and turns black. In the end, it has a really bad smell and also tastes terrible. You can’t make it better, either, because once chemicals change, they can’t be changed back again.

A. Chemical changes. B. Chemicals. C. Ingredients. D. Both B and C.

①The Nazca Lines (纳斯卡线条) are a famous group of huge ancient drawings in the desert in southern Peru (秘鲁). The Nazca people, who lived in the area over 2,000 years ago, made the drawings by removing the reddish (淡红的) top layer (层) of rocks in the desert.
②The drawings are also called “geoglyphs” (地画). The Nazca Lines include different kinds of geoglyphs. The largest geoglyph line is around 366 meters long.
③Recently, researchers have discovered over 300 new geoglyphs in the Nazca Desert. They used a special AI program to find possible geoglyphs. They spent over 2,600 hours doing research and took lots of pictures with drones (无人机).
④Most of the new geoglyphs are smaller than the ones already discovered, and are about 9 meters in length. Many of the new geoglyphs seem to show humans, as well as animals, including llamas (美洲驼) and fish. Some show unusual scenes, including a killer whale holding a knife.

These paths aren’t far from groups of the smaller geoglyphs. The researchers believe the paths were made by the Nazca people when they were walking through the desert, and the smaller geoglyphs were meant to be seen by these travelers.
⑦The scientists also think the way these smaller geoglyphs are grouped together may be the key to understanding them. And they believe the larger geoglyphs are different, and may have been used for ceremonies (仪式) or other special events.

Zhao Yafu is an old agricultural (农业的) researcher in Jiangsu Province. He spends most of the year working in the fields. He has worked hard in the countryside for more than fifty years, spread new agricultural techniques (技术), and led people there to make money and live a better life.
Born in 1941, Zhao’s childhood dream was to become a news reporter. When he was at college, Zhao saw how hard life was in the countryside, so he decided to do something to help. He began to teach agricultural science to the farmers in a primary school in the village. He always believed that they could make a great progress as long as they took it seriously. “The villagers needed someone to help them change their minds and learn new techniques,” Zhao said.
Zhao kept on encouraging the farmers to use the new techniques and to plant new kinds of rice, which helped them make a lot of money. Though working here for a long time was such a challenge, Zhao thought that nothing is more important than the farmers in the countryside. As time went by, villagers built more new houses and roads by themselves with the money. Finally, they came to understand that Zhao really wanted to help them.
Zhao and his team were also active in western China while they were working in Jiangsu. Since 2013, they have helped many farmers in western China become rich.

Hands and feet can easily get cold in winter. Gloves might be a good choice, yet sometimes wearing them is inconvenient. However, this was not a problem for ancient Chinese, who had a fine tool to keep their hands warm—hand warmers.
About the origin (起源), there are some tales about it. One is about Emperor Yang from the Sui Dynasty who visited Jiangsu in the winter. Because of the cold, craftsmen (工匠) were required to make a small warmer for the emperor to hold in hand. That was how the hand warmer was created. By the Song Dynasty, it was already popular among people. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it became much easier to make a hand warmer. So you can find many poems and books from this period recording people using hand warmers. The Dream of the Red Chamber by Cao Xueqin from the Qing Dynasty, described a servant sending a hand warmer to Lin Daiyu in one chapter.
The ancient hand warmers were in different shapes, such as pumpkins, flowers, turtle shells and so on. Inside a hand warmer, there were burning charcoal (木炭) or simple coals. Some spices (香料) were added into the coals, so there will be a pleasant smell when using the hand warmer

27. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Chemical changes. B. Chemicals. C. Ingredients. D. Both B and C.
28. According to the passage, which of the following involves a chemical change?
A. Use ink to write on the paper. B. Cut wood into pieces.
C. Cook delicious tomato sauce. D. Put different vegetables together.
29. How does the writer develop his idea in Paragraph 3?
A. By telling a story. B. By giving an example.
C. By comparing differences. D. By explaining the result.
30 What is this passage mainly about?
A. What everything is made of. B. What a chemical change is.
C. How cooking makes chemical changes. D. Why you can smell chemical changes.

Terrible weather events are harming the planet, and experts say there might be even greater danger to come. The sea ice loss and the Arctic ice melting caused by climate change have increased much in the last ten years. Because of that, the number of polar bears (北极熊) and seals (海豹) has dropped greatly while polar bears depend on sea ice for hunting seals.
According to the data from the WMO (世界气象组织), temperatures on the Antarctica (南极洲) just reach 18.3℃, which is higher than the record of 17.59℃ in March, 2015. Moreover, temperatures in this area have warmed about 3℃ over the last 50 years. Although such temperatures might be considered pleasant for a picnic, this is the Antarctica we are talking about. It is home to the most inhospitable environment on the planet because it is supposed to be an extremely cold place. In fact, the average (平均的) temperature of the continent’s central area is -57℃.
Besides, ▲ . Australia is undergoing its worst drought (干旱) since the 1930s, leaving wildfires burning so long and causing many deaths. Meanwhile in Europe, crops in the northwest are suffering the driest weather in the past 80 years.
⑤With these new geoglyphs, the researchers have made progress in finding out what they mean.
⑥Masato Sakai, who led the research, says the new discoveries are helping scientists learn more. They discovered some paths (道路) in the Nazca Desert.
⑧Named a World Heritage Site in 1994, the Nazca Lines are surely important and with new technology there will be more discoveries to come.

Zhao Yafu is an old agricultural (农业的) researcher in Jiangsu Province. He spends most of the year working in the fields. He has worked hard in the countryside for more than fifty years, spread new agricultural techniques (技术), and led people there to make money and live a better life.
Born in 1941 Zhao’s childhood dream was to become a news reporter.
“I saw how poor villagers used to be, and I also see how they have changed for the past few years. I will continue with my work if my health is not too bad,” said Zhao.
