You see people in movies celebrating a white Christmas in England or the United States But Christmas in Australia is different.
Australians celebrate the holiday on Dec. 25th. It is at the hottest time of the year in Australia. The temperature is usually about 30℃ in most cities and can even be over 40℃. There is certainly no white Christmas in Australia.
Because it is so hot, the tradition is to have a lunch outside and to swim in the pool or beach. Most people have a one-week holiday during this time, so they will travel to meet their family for Christmas lunch. Christmas lunch is usually a big meal of ham, turkey, salad and fresh seafood. Family members all cook something different and bring it to the big meal. I always enjoy Christmas lunch because there are lots of good cooks in my family. One year my aunt even made a delicious gingerbread house (姜饼屋) for us to eat as dessert.
Children get presents from Santa Claus and are always excited to play with them. It is a fun time to play or swim in the pool with the other members of your family.
The sport of cricket (板球) is very popular in Australia and another tradition is to play a game of cricket in your backyard. I always enjoyed playing with my uncle and cousins when I was growing up.
So Australia might not have a white Christmas. But it is still a very exciting and fun time of the year.

A. Australians often get together to play on Christmas.
B. Australians usually eat ham, turkey, salad and gingerbread house on Christmas.
C. Children are excited to see the Santa Claus have lunch with them.
D. Christmas in Australia isn’t the same as that in England or in the United States.
31. What does writer think of Christmas in Australia according to the passage?
A. Exciting. B. Boring. C. Interesting. D. Both A and C.

Foreigners like growing flowers in the garden and enjoy the nice smell in spring. However, Chinese people prefer growing vegetables and get a harvest in autumn. For Chinese, bottles, even plastic bags are perfect for growing vegetables.
It’s said that there is a “vegetable gene (基因)” in every Chinese person. After all, they have farmed for thousands of years and gained rich experience in growing vegetables. Because of this, they grow vegetables around the world, creating conditions for planting before there are any.
A group of parents of Chinese students once grew vegetables at Yale University in the USA. This area used to be covered with weeds (杂草). To help change the situation, these Chinese parents worked together and finally turned weeds into vegetables.
Africa is such a poor place. Many hard-working and kind-hearted Chinese workers went there to help. They helped build roads as well as taught Africans how to farm. All kinds of fruits and vegetables have been grown in Africa.
The soldiers (士兵) on the islands of the South China Sea also created a vegetable garden through their own efforts. It used to be difficult for the soldiers to eat fresh vegetables on the islands. But recently, they harvested 750kg of vegetables on sandy beaches. Everyone was excited.
With the development of science and technology in China, Chinese people have grown vegetables all over the world, from Europe to Africa, the days of planting potatoes on Mars (火星) will not be far away.

Crane
The crane is a legend (传说) in China for being the prince with feathers on earth. Next to (仅次于) the phoenix (凤凰), the crane is the Chinese favourite bird symbol. The crane is the ancient symbol for long life because it can live for a long time. In many legends, the spirits ride on cranes, which are also said to take the souls (灵魂) of the dead people to heaven.
Goldfish
This symbol means a lot of gold, making the goldfish a popular symbol in Chinese culture. One of the most popular New Year’s pictures is a child holding a large goldfish and a flower which brings both wealth and harmony. A goldfish embroidered (刺绣) on a bag or a shirt is a sure way to bring enough energy into your life.

What’s more, the magpie is a powerful symbol to attract the happiness with marriage and children.
Rooster
A picture of a rooster stands for a wish for advancement (晋升) because the rooster’s crest (冠) sounds similar to the word “官” in Chinese. More importantly, legend believes that the Heavenly Rooster of Dusu Mountain was crowing (啼叫) loudly and making all the roosters on earth crow along with it. This crowing would drive all evil spirits away.

Ⅵ.任务型阅读(65-67题,每小题2分,68题3分,共9分)
There is a class debate (辩论) about energy next Thursday. I will take part, but first I need to plan and study. We don’t know which side we will be on until the day before. This means we have to prepare to speak for both sides. First of all, I can make a list of energy sources (资源) with its advantages and disadvantages. So it’s time for me to collect information and data for the debate.
For example, we might have to talk about gasoline (汽油) as an energy source. If so, one group would use the information in a science book to say it is made from oil, a fossil fuel (化石燃料). Fossil fuels are made from the remains (遗骸) of ancient plants and animals. They formed millions of years ago. However, the other group can argue about a big problem with using fossil fuels—we are using them much faster than it takes for them to form. The argument may come from an interview of a group of scientists who predict that we will run out of fossil fuels in 50 years.
Another source we might need to debate about is wind energy. One group would say that it is a renewable energy source. This is because wind will never run out and it is free. We can interview some experts to get more helpful information. For example, some Chinese experts have said that a large wind turbine (风力涡轮) can make enough energy to power a city. Another benefit is that it does not harm the environment. But the group against using wind energy can use more scientific data on the Internet to argue that it is not as efficient (高效的) as other sources. A scientific website shows that less than half of the wind collected can be changed into electricity. Also, building wind turbines everywhere will cost 600 billion U.S. dollars, according to CCTV news.
We now use more energy than we did in the past. ________ The debate will be hard, but I know I will be ready, not only for the debate itself, but also for the future energy challenge!
45. Must the writer prepare to speak for both sides?

You see people in movies celebrating a white Christmas in England or the United States. But Christmas in Australia is different.

第Ⅱ卷(共55分)
_____________________________________________________________
46. What are fossil fuels made from?

47. According to the passage, how can the writer collect useful information and data for the debate?

【答案】例文
My Unforgettable Middle School Life
How time flies! My colourful middle school life is nearly ending. Here is what I think about myself.
In the past three years, I learned a lot of knowledge and made great progress in subjects like English. I was always grateful to my teachers for their patience. Also, I got along well with my classmates. However, I used to be late for school sometimes and spent too much time playing games. When facing difficulties, I often gave up easily.
Now I have changed a lot. I study harder and more carefully than before. After class I go over the lessons and finish my homework on time. I also try to solve problems by myself instead of giving up.
In the future, I will keep working hard to improve myself. I hope to enter a good high school and make new friends. I believe if I never lose hope, my dreams will come true one day.
