When Oxford University Press (出版社) chose “rizz” as its 2023 Word of the Year, many people asked, “Rizz? Is there such a word?” At the same time, many young English speakers laughed out loud “Jeepers, haven’t you ever heard of rizz?”
Rizz means the ability to attract a person. Are you good at making friends? Do your classmates often laugh loudly at your jokes? Then you probably have rizz. As in “to rizz up someone”, it means to attract someone. The word first appeared on social media as teen slang (俚语) and became popular after the Spider-Man actor Tom Holland said he had “no rizz.”
★ “Jeepers” is another. People use it to express shock. And the word “tea” is no longer just a “drink”. It also means “gossip (闲聊).” Similarly, here in China, words like “xianyanbao” have a new meaning. Teens are also saying “dazi” ( pal or friend ) and “qimengle” (What?).
These changes show that both English and Chinese are alive. A health language, researchers say, should always see new words being created, words being borrowed from other languages and old words taking on new meanings. The changes also show that young people have more influences on society.
When we look back on 2023, one thing stands out: artificial intelligence (AI).Computers have become cleverer than ever. Some AI systems (系统) have “rizzed up” many users with their ability to write long articles, create poems and draw pictures. But they can only use language. Can ChatGPT coin a slang word and make it popular? Can it give a word new meanings? Can it change how we humans speak and write?
You should be proud of your ability to play with words. But while you try to create another slang word, remember to be polite. Also, don’t use slang in your compositions—it won’t “rizz up” your teachers!
19. The young English speakers laughed out loud to express their ________.
A. embarrassment B. happiness C. surprise D. pride
20. Which of the following can be put in ★ ?
A. Have you ever heard of “jeepers”? B. Rizz is not the only hot slang word.
C. Teens like using slang a lot. D. Maybe you know how to use rizz.
21. What made languages alive according to the writer?
A. The change of society. B. The influence of researchers.
C. The development of AI. D. The creativity of young people.
22. What’s the writer’s attitude (态度) towards using slang?
A. He can’t stand it. B. In general, he supports it.
C. He’s against it. D. He doesn’t care about it.

Recently, many people think it’s risky to use credit (信用) card numbers online. However, from time to time, we all use passwords and ID numbers on the Internet. We think we are safe, but that may not be true! A new kind of attack (攻击) is being used by dishonest people to steal IDs and credit card numbers from web surfers. This new kind of attack is called “phishing”.
Phishing sounds the same as the word “fishing”, and it means that a thief is trying to trick people into giving away valuable information. Like real fishermen, phishers use bait (诱饵) in the form of great online deals or services. For example, phishers might use false emails and websites to trick people into revealing (透露) credit card numbers, account usernames, and passwords. They imitate (模仿) well-known banks, online sellers, and credit card companies. Successful phishers may make as many as 5% of the people believe and give away their personal information.
It’s really a big problem! Actually, tricking 5% of the online population is huge. Now more than 4.6 billion people have access (进入权) to the Internet, and 75% of those Internet users live in the wealthiest countries on Earth. It has been reported that phishers send more than 40 billion false messages each year. Even by tricking only 5% of the people, phishers can make a lot of money.
Amy, 18, from California, received an email. A man told Amy that she could get a million dollars in her account as a reward if she sent a thousand dollars to him. Amy did as the man said at once. The “thief” used Amy’s Social Security number to get credit cards in her name and transferred her money.
How can people avoid being cheated online? Above all, they have to learn to recognize the email that has been sent by a phisher. Always be careful with any email with urgent (紧急的) requests for personal information. Phishers typically write upsetting or exciting, but false, statements in their emails so that people will reply right away. Never give out personal information to phishers. And if an offer sounds too good to be true, it is.
23. Phishing is compared to ________ according to the passage.
A. making money B. playing games C. catching fish D. writing emails
24. Which writing skill is used in Para. 3?
A. Giving examples. B. Listing numbers. C. Raising questions. D. Using sayings.
25. Which of the following in the dictionary best explains the underlined word “transfer” in Para. 4?
transfer v. (transferred, transferring)
①to move from one place, school, job etc to another
②to connect the call of someone to someone else’s
③to move money from one account to another
④to change from one bus, plane etc to another
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④
26. Besides introducing what phishing is, the writer also tells us how to ________.
A. help to catch phishers B. reply to urgent emails
C pay by credit card D. protect ourselves online
(D)
①There is really no reason for my writing the life of Su Tungpo except that I want to do it. For years, the writing of his biography (传记) has been at the back of my mind, but the regret never quiets down. Now that I am able to apply myself to this task, I am happy, without any reason.
②A vivid personality isn’t that easy to be understood. One might say that Su Tungpo was an unchangeable optimist (乐观主义者), a friend of the people, a prose master, an original painter, a great calligrapher, an experimenter in wine making, an engineer, a secretary to the emperor, a dissenter in politics, and a poet. And yet that might miss the sum total of why people like Su Tungpo. Su Tungpo’s complex personality gives a reason. Always deeply stuck in politics, he was always greater than politics. Without tricks and without purpose, he went along singing, composing, and criticizing, to express something he felt in his heart, paying no attention to what might be the results of himself. He wrote just because he enjoyed writing, and today we enjoy his writing just because he wrote so beautifully, generously, and out of the clearness of his heart.
③As I try to find the reasons why, for a thousand years in China, each generation has a crowd of crazy admirers of this poet, I come to the second reason, which is the same as the first, stated in a different way. Su Tungpo had charm. The chief charm of Su Tungpo was a force of character (that could not be stopped by anyone), a force (that started at the moment of his birth, had to run its course until death closed his mouth and stopped his laughing chatter). He wielded his pen almost as if it were a toy. He could be curious, or humorous or serious, very serious, and from his pen we hear various human emotions of joy, happiness, worry and love.
④On the whole, we get the impression that he played and sang through life and enjoyed it greatly, and when sadness came and unluckiness fell, he accepted them with a smile. That is the kind of charm which I am trying to describe in my way and which has made him the favorite poet of so many Chinese experts.
27. What do the underlined words “this task” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. read the life of Su Tungpo B. read Su Tungpo’s poems
C. write the life of Su Tungpo D. write down Su Tungpo’s poems
28. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Su Tungpo’s works were all full of joy and love. B. Su Tungpo had a crowd of fans at home and abroad.
C. Su Tungpo was good at many things except making wine. D. Su Tungpo always expressed himself without caring about the results.
29. Which words can best describe Su Tungpo according to the passage?
A. Beautiful and clear. B. Sad and changeable. C. Serious and unlucky. D. Optimistic and charming.
30. What’s the structure of the passage? (P①=paragraph①)
A. B. C. D.

①to move from one place, school, job etc to another
②to connect the call of someone to someone else’s
③to move money from one account to another
④to change from one bus, plane etc to another
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④

A Beautiful and clear. B. Sad and changeable. C. Serious and unlucky. D. Optimistic and charming.
30. What’s the structure of the passage? (P①=paragraph①)
A. B. C. D.
