专题03 阅读理解 记叙文 主题01 人与社会——科普知识 Passage 1 (24-25九上·广西南宁第十四中学·期中) Some people smell their socks to see whether they might wear them another day. It might seem like a harmless habit. But what if a dangerous fungus (真菌) has developed in your socks? A man from Zhangzhou, Fujian Province, was sent to a local hospital. He had a pain in his chest and coughed a lot. An X-ray showed that he was suffering from a serious lung infection (肺部感染). Surprisingly, the following tests showed that the infection was caused by a fungus. The bacteria (细菌) is usually found in shoes or boots. In order to find out the truth, doctors had a long talk with the man. They finally found that he had been used to smelling his dirty socks when he got home from work every day. They believe when the man took a deep breath to smell his smelly socks, he breathed in the fungus as well. When the fungus entered his lungs, it caused an infection. Can people actually develop an infection from smelling their dirty socks? According to the doctors, this kind of infection does not happen very often. In this case, it might also have been linked to the man’s weak immune system (免疫系统). He had been under heavy stress (压力) for a long time. He went to work every day and had to wake up several times a night to take care of his baby. All of these things would do harm to his immune system. He handed the basket back to me and put his arm gently around my shoulders. “That squirrel worked very hard to collect his winter food,” he said. “Now that all of his pecans are gone, don’t you think that little squirrel will be very hungry when it gets cold?” “I didn’t think about that,” I said. “I know,” Grandpa said. “But a good man should never make use of someone else’s hard work, even the squirrel’s.” The image (形象) of that hungry squirrel wouldn’t leave my mind. One treatment, which is 1,600 years old, uses sweet wormwood. Tu found it useful and tried to extract (提取) the qinghaosu from it in order to make a medicine. Next, Tu and her team did lots of tests with qinghaosu in fighting against malaria. After her team showed that qinghaosu could treat malaria in mice and monkeys, Tu and two of her team members offered to test the medicine on themselves before testing on human patients. We had classes in the morning and the evenings were filled with fun activities. We did have a break in the afternoons, however. One afternoon,my friend Claude and I found an old basketball. We went to an outdoor basketball court for a game of one-on-one. At the time, Claude was taller than me. He was also better at basketball. I fell behind fast. I was determined, though, so I drove hard to the basket-and missed it. The ball bounced off the rim (从篮筐弹回) and I jumped up to catch it. Just as I was about to catch it, I saw an elbow (手肘) above my face. As Claude grabbed the ball, his elbow came down hard, right into my eyes. I saw stars everywhere. The pain was terrible. Claude kept saying “sorry”over and over. I laughed through the pain. I spent the next few days walking around with a black eye, but it was worth it. For years afterward, I got a laugh whenever I told the story and joked about Claude’s elbow of death. In this life, we all get an elbow to the eye sometimes. Our plans fail. Things work against us.
