第二节 (满分25分)
He quickly calmed down. He took a deep breath and decided to introduce the mooncakes. “Mooncakes are very important in Chinese culture,” he began, his voice steady. “They are round, symbolizing reunion. We eat them during the Mid-Autumn Festival to celebrate family togetherness. Each bite is full of sweet fillings, just like the warmth of a family gathering.” As he spoke, the room fell silent. People listened intently, their curiosity piqued. Some started to nod in understanding, and the awkward atmosphere gradually faded away. Emma took a small bite of the mooncake and her eyes widened in surprise. “It’s delicious!” she exclaimed. Others followed suit, and soon, the laughter turned into praises.
Three months later, Li Wei and his mooncakes appeared at school’s International Food Fair. His booth was decorated with red lanterns and Chinese knots. People queued up to taste his mooncakes. Li Wei introduced the mooncakes with confidence, sharing the cultural significance behind them. Many students and teachers were deeply attracted. They not only enjoyed the sweet taste of the mooncakes but also learned about Chinese traditions. His mooncakes became the star of the fair. Li Wei was overjoyed. He realized that cultural differences could be bridged through sharing and understanding, and his little mooncakes had become a wonderful bridge to connect different cultures.

The Language Exchange Programme allows students in pairs to communicate in two different languages they wish to share and learn each week. Students record short entries after each partner meeting noting the language skills practised and the topics discussed. Each pair of students meets three times throughout the term with a teacher who decides if the exchange is effective. Students who successfully complete the programme will receive one credit each.
Requirements for completion:
•One welcoming session on the second Friday of the term
•18 weekly one-hour pair meetings
•Weekly progress reports for all pair meetings
•At least three pair-teacher meetings
•One five-minute final video
Sign up!
The sign-up and registration process is as follows:
•Students sign up and indicate the languages they can share and languages they are interested in learning.
•Based on the information entered by each student, potential pairs are identified.
•Proficiency (熟练) levels are confirmed through coursework or placement tests.
•Once a pair has been determined to be suitable, the students will be contacted individually with a special permission number to register for the programme.
Reminders:
Signing up for the programme does not automatically mean that you will be able to register and participate. Pairs are matched by languages of interest and proficiency levels. The fashion industry is responsible for up to ten percent of the world’s carbon emissions (排放). But what if you could get clothes more sustainably and spend less money?
Enter rental fashion (服装租赁). Companies charge you a small part of the store price to borrow a piece of clothing. They’ll take care of the cleaning once you send it back. These companies advertise sustainability as one of the best reasons to rent: By sharing clothes among more people, they satisfy shoppers’ desire for new looks while avoiding the emissions that new clothes would produce.
The only thing is, of course, there are trade-offs. Shipping you those clothes creates carbon emissions, and so does washing them after you’re done with them.
Then how can you make sure that the environment gets the most benefit out of your money?
First of all, rent clothes you don’t wear frequently. Some companies rent out high-end clothes, while others offer more everyday options. The best clothes to rent are fancy clothes for special occasions. And higher-quality pieces are more likely to last through multiple (多次的) wears. If a rented piece of clothes gets worn more times than it would if one person owned it, that can definitely make a difference. Meanwhile, casual clothes such as jeans already get frequent wears and are better to own than rent.
You could also rent from a nearby location and pick up your clothes by yourself. If you were to use an environmentally friendly method, such as public transport or biking, that would even be better.
Of course, buying less can be one of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to live more sustainably. By buying fewer new clothes, you can help cut down the need for clothing production, which is responsible for most of emissions in the fashion industry.
24.According to the first two paragraphs, the rise of rental fashion is meant to ______ .
A.change shopping habits B.reduce environmental harm
C.cut clothing production D.follow fashion trends easily
25.Which can best explain the underlined “trade-offs”?
A.Options. B.Costs. C.Preferences. D.Differences.
26.Which would be the greenest clothing habit according to the text?
A.Renting expensive clothes.
B.Renting clothes delivered easily.
C.Renting frequently-worn clothes.
D.Renting clothes with self-pick-up nearby.
27.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To encourage buying less.
B.To introduce changes in fashion.
C.To explain rental fashion and give advice.
D.To warn of the damage done by fashion industry.
C
For Mexican poet Manuel Cuautle who was born in 1971, Chinese poetry possesses two qualities that make it stand out: naturalness and simplicity. From a very young age he has maintained a close relationship with Chinese literature. At first he was an eager reader and later Director of the Mexico City International Poetry Festival, which he has been organizing for a decade.
As part of this festival, Cuautle, author of nine collections of poems and the children’s book La Nariz de Manuel (Manuel’s Nose) , has invited two Chinese poets every year for nine years to present their works and give readings in front of a group of Mexicans. Among his favorites are Liu Chang, Yu Jian and Li Cheng'en.
The relationship grew even closer in 2013, when his collection of poems The Suicide of the Snail published in Argentina in 2005, was translated into Chinese by Zhang Jin, a teacher of classical Chinese literature. The book contains 18 poems. “I drew a parallel (平行线) between human life and the life of snails, because these animals also have the need to enjoy life. They’re here for a reason, and I turn that reason into poetry. I think my views relate closely to Eastern philosophy,” he explained about the poems.
Digging deeper into the topic of language, Cuautle believes that contemporary standard Chinese bears a strong phonetic (语音的) likeness to the language families found in Mesoamerica, a term that refers to a geographical and cultural area which extends from central Mexico down through Central America. Theirs is a kind of brotherhood based on musicality. “If you speak neither standard Chinese nor Purépecha, which is spoken by roughly 175, 000 people in the northwestern region of Michoacán, Mexico, you’ll likely think they’re the same. ” he said.
Cuautle went on to say, “If we compare ourselves with the Chinese, we realize there are many similarities. We can draw parallels between formalities, like a respect for your seniors, and even spot some gastronomic (烹任学的) similarities. All these features are attractive to both cultures. ”
28.What can we say about Cuautle?
A.He admires Chinese literature deeply. B.He fell in love with poems at a festival.
C.He shows little interest in children's literature. D.He finished Manuel’s Nose with two Chinese poets.
29.What do we know about The Suicide of the Snail?
A.It is a newly published poem series. B.It is actually against Eastern philosophy.
C.It explores human’s negative impact on snails. D.It is a reflection on snails, pleasure and life itself.
30.What does Cuautle think of Purépecha?
A.Its users are mostly well-educated. B.It sounds similar to standard Chinese.
C.It will soon be adopted in Michoacán. D.Its phonetic system is really confusing.
31.What does the author mainly talk about in the text?
A.The growing popularity of poetry around the world.
B.The similarities between Mexicans and the Chinese.
C.A poet at the Mexico City International Poetry Festival.
D.A Mexican wordsmith’s exploration of Chinese culture.
D
Language is so deeply embedded in almost every aspect of the way we interact with the world that it’s hard to imagine what it would be like not to have it. What would be the consequence if we didn’t have names for things or didn’t have experience talking about things that hadn’t actually happened? Would we be able to think? What would our thoughts be like?
The answer to the question of whether thought is possible without language depends on what you mean by “thought”. Can you experience impressions and feelings without language? Yes, and very few would argue otherwise. But there is a difference between being able to experience “pain” and possessing the concept “pain”. Most would say true thought involves having the concept.
Many artists and scientists, in describing their own inner processes while they work, say they do not use words to solve problems, but images. The autistic (患自闭症的) author Temple Grandin, in explaining how she thinks visually rather than linguistically, says that concepts for her are collections of images.
Of course, Grandin has language, and knows how to use it, so it is hard to say how much of her thinking has been influenced by it, but it’s not unimaginable — and probably likely — that there are people who are deficient in the ability to use language and think in the way she describes.
There is evidence that deaf people cut off from language possess the ability to think before being exposed to language. Also, the sign languages developed by deaf students without language models display the kind of thinking that goes far beyond mere sensory impression or practical problem solving.
However, while it appears that we can indeed think without language, there are certain kinds of thinking that are made possible by language. Language gives us symbols we can use to fix ideas, reflect on them, and hold them up for observation. It allows for a level of abstract reasoning we wouldn’t have otherwise. The philosopher Peter Carruthers has argued that there is a type of inner, explicitly linguistic thinking that allows us to bring our own thoughts into conscious awareness. We may be able to think without language, but language lets us know we are thinking.
32.What does the author intend to show with the experience of Temple Grandin?
A.People without language can’t think.
B.Language has no influence on thinking.
C.Some people may think in a non-linguistic way.
D.Autistic people have a special way of using language.
33.Which of the following best explains “deficient” underlined in paragraph 4?
A.Flexible. B.Lacking.
C.Confident. D.Experienced.
34.What could we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Language facilitates abstract reasoning.
B.Language is merely useful for reflection.
C.Language is a must for people to perceive the world.
D.Language restricts people’s ability to think visually.
35.What is the writing purpose of the text?
A.To stress the importance of language in daily life.
B.To advocate the thinking modes of scientists and artists.
C.To demonstrate the cognitive abilities of average individuals.
D.To show the relationship between thought and language.

When 16-year-old Li Wei received an invitation to his British classmate Emma’s birthday party, he was so excited that he almost jumped up. Having moved from Shanghai just three months ago, he felt the party was his first real chance to make friends. His mother had spent the entire morning in their tiny apartment kitchen carefully preparing a gift: homemade mooncakes wrapped in red paper decorated with dragon patterns. “In China, red brings good luck and the dragon represents strength,” she said proudly. “These mooncakes carry our family’s blessings.”
At the party, colorful balloons danced along the ceiling (天花板), and the living room was filled with the latest pop songs. Li Wei noticed everyone’s gifts piled (堆放) on a table, and he placed his gift on the top, whose traditional appearance stood out among the gifts. He looked around and found that most of the faces were unfamiliar. So he sat down and listened to the music, waiting excitedly for that big moment — opening the gifts. Soon it came. In the cheers of her friends, Emma walked over to the table. Her eyes were immediately drawn to Li Wei’s uniquely wrapped gift. However, when she opened it, silence fell as she stared at the unfamiliar pastries (糕点). “What…are these?” she asked hesitantly. A boy leaned over and laughed loudly, “Looks like play-dough (橡皮泥)!” Heat rushed to Li Wei’s face as he stammered (结结巴巴地说), “They’re traditional Chinese mooncakes ...” However, his voice was swallowed (淹没) by the laughter that followed.
Someone even whispered, “This might be leftovers from his home. He must think it’s a picnic outing.” Li Wei’s heart sank. He didn’t expect that his well-intended gift — a gesture of love, now turned into something strange and unwelcome in this foreign setting. The joyful atmosphere disappeared quickly, replaced by an uncomfortable silence as guests looked at the mooncakes as if they were strange objects from another world. Just as Li Wei wished he could disappear, he suddenly remembered what his mother had said with pride before he came here.

M: Absolutely, there’s one named “Pedro”. And I listen to local news sometimes, but nothing beats chatting with people at the local Spanish cafe.
W: And it is handy in Spain too, right?
M: Absolutely. By engaging myself in the culture, I’ll truly become a part of the local community. It’s important to have a genuine experience rather than just being a tourist.

M: You did make progress this time, especially in reading and writing parts.
W: But I’m still dissatisfied with my spoken English. It’s my biggest problem.
M: Cheer up, Tina. Let me help you find the right way to learn English when you’re studying a language. The key word is patience. It’s of the greatest importance, because nobody can master a language all at once.
W: Oh yeah, but what am I supposed to do, find some foreign friends or go abroad to learn it?
M: Not exactly. You can just make full use of every morning to practise English.
W: Should I get up earlier every day?
M: You don’t have to do so. Actually, there are indeed many chances in the morning that you can grasp to learn English. For example, you can listen to English news while you are dressing and washing. At the same time, you can imitate and speak English loudly. You need to take every opportunity to learn.
W: Practice makes perfect, right?
M: You said it.

W: Sounds hot. How did you get along without studying the local language?
M: Most people there speak English, but there were some remote places in the mountains where we had to learn a few words to communicate. Usually it was easy. One time though, it got a little awkward. I was asking a baker for some bread and I said I want money instead of I want bread. The words for money and bread were so similar that I got them mixed up.
W: How did the baker react?
M: He looked a little scared but my friend quickly cleared up the confusion. We ended up becoming friends with the guy and he introduced us to more young people. Whenever we told the story of our meeting, it would make everyone laugh.

W: As a learner of English as a foreign language, I’m going through a similar experience. I have difficulty with spelling, pronunciation and, believe it or not, with numbers and figures.
M: But you speak English so much better than I do Chinese. I wish I were able to talk to native speakers in Chinese the way you are talking to me.
W: You will. Only it takes time.

【答案】24.B 25.B 26.D 27.C
【导语】这是一篇说明文,文章介绍了服装租赁以及如何减少服装租赁对环境的影响。
24.推理判断题。根据第一段“The fashion industry is responsible for up to ten percent of the world’s carbon emissions (排放). But what if you could get clothes more sustainably and spend less money?(时尚产业的碳排放量占世界总排放量的10%。但是,如果你能更可持续地买到衣服,花更少的钱呢?)”和第二段中“These companies advertise sustainability as one of the best reasons to rent: By sharing clothes among more people, they satisfy shoppers’ desire for new looks while avoiding the emissions that new clothes would produce.(这些公司将可持续性宣传为租赁的最佳理由之一:通过与更多人共享衣服,它们满足了购物者对新造型的渴望,同时避免了新衣服产生的排放)”可知,租赁服饰的兴起是为了减少对环境的影响,故选B。
25.词句猜测题。根据划线词下文“Shipping you those clothes creates carbon emissions, and so does washing them after you’re done with them.(把这些衣服寄给你会产生碳排放,穿完后洗它们也会产生碳排放)”可知,邮寄衣服寄会产生碳排放,洗它们也会产生碳排放,这是关于租赁衣服的环境代价,trade-offs意为“成本,代价”,故选B。
26.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“You could also rent from a nearby location and pick up your clothes by yourself. If you were to use an environmentally friendly method, such as public transport or biking, that would even be better.(你也可以在附近租衣服,然后自己去取衣服。如果你使用一种环保的方式,比如公共交通或骑自行车,那就更好了)”可知,从附近租衣服且自己去取是最环保的方式,故选D。
27.推理判断题。根据全文内容,结合第二段中“Enter rental fashion (服装租赁). Companies charge you a small part of the store price to borrow a piece of clothing. They’ll take care of the cleaning once you send it back.(进入服装租赁。借一件衣服,公司会向你收取商店价格的一小部分。你送回去后,他们会负责清洁的)”和第四段“Then how can you make sure that the environment gets the most benefit out of your money?(那么你怎样才能确保环境从你的钱中得到最大的好处呢?)”可知,文章介绍了服装租赁以及如何减少服装租赁对环境的影响,故本文目的是解释租赁时尚并提出建议,故选C。

【答案】28.A 29.D 30.B 31.D
【导语】这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了墨西哥诗人库奥特勒热爱中国文学,其作品与中国文化相关,还探讨了汉语与墨西哥语言的相似性 。
28.推理判断题。根据第一段第二句“From a very young age he has maintained a close relationship with Chinese literature.(从很小的时候起,他就与中国文学保持着密切的关系)”以及第二段“As part of this festival, Cuautle, author of nine collections of poems and the children’s book La Nariz de Manuel (Manuel’s Nose) , has invited two Chinese poets every year for nine years to present their works and give readings in front of a group of Mexicans.(作为这个节日的一部分,拥有九部诗集和儿童读物《曼努埃尔的鼻子》的作者库奥特勒,九年来每年都邀请两位中国诗人展示他们的作品,并在一群墨西哥人面前朗诵)”可知,库奥特勒从小就与中国文学关系密切,还多次邀请中国诗人。由此推知,他深深钦佩中国文学。故选A项。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段第二句“I drew a parallel (平行线) between human life and the life of snails, because these animals also have the need to enjoy life. They’re here for a reason, and I turn that reason into poetry.(我在人类生活和蜗牛的生活之间画了一条平行线,因为这些动物也有享受生活的需要。它们存在是有原因的,我把这个原因写成了诗歌)”可知,《蜗牛的自杀》是对蜗牛的快乐以及生命本身的一种思考和反映。故选D项。
30.细节理解题。根据第四段第二句“Digging deeper into the topic of language, Cuautle believes that contemporary standard Chinese bears a strong phonetic (语音的) likeness to the language families found in Mesoamerica, a term that refers to a geographical and cultural area which extends from central Mexico down through Central America.(深入研究语言这个话题,库奥特勒认为,当代标准汉语与中美洲的语系在语音上有很强的相似性,中美洲是一个地理和文化区域,从墨西哥中部一直延伸到中美洲。)”以及第四段最后一句“If you speak neither standard Chinese nor Purépecha, which is spoken by roughly 175, 000 people in the northwestern region of Michoacán, Mexico, you'll likely think they’re the same.
【答案】32.C 33.B 34.A 35.D
【导语】本文是一篇议论文。本文探讨了语言和思维之间的关系,指出虽然语言不是思维的必要条件,但它极大地促进了抽象思维和自我意识的发展。
32.推理判断题。根据第三段“The autistic author Temple Grandin, in explaining how she thinks visually rather than linguistically, says that concepts for her are collections of images.(自闭症作家Temple Grandin在解释她如何以视觉而非语言的方式思考时,她说对她来说概念是图像的集合。)”可知,作者提到Temple Grandin是为了表明有些人可能以非语言的方式思考。故选C项。
33.词义猜测题。根据第四段“Of course, Grandin has language, and knows how to use it, so it is hard to say how much of her thinking has been influenced by it, but it’s not unimaginable (当然,格兰丁有语言,也知道如何使用语言,所以很难说她的思想有多少受到了语言的影响,但这并非不可想象)”以及“to use language and think in the way she describes (像她描述的那样使用语言和思考的能力。)”
根据最后一段“Language gives us symbols we can use to fix ideas, reflect on them, and hold them up for observation. It allows for a level of abstract reasoning we wouldn’t have otherwise. (语言给我们提供了符号,我们可以用它来固定思想,反思思想,并把它们举起来观察。它允许我们进行一定程度的抽象推理。)”可知,语言使得人们可以进行抽象推理。故选A。
35.主旨大意题。根据第一段“Language is so deeply embedded in almost every aspect of the way we interact with the world that it’s hard to imagine what it would be like not to have it. What would be the consequence if we didn’t have names for things or didn’t have experience talking about things that hadn’t actually happened? Would we be able to think? What would our thoughts be like? (语言是如此的深植于我们与世界互动的方方面面,以至于很难想象没有语言会是什么样子。如果我们没有事物的名称,或者没有谈论从未发生过的事情的经验,结果会是什么?我们能思考吗?我们的想法会是什么样子?)”可知,文章首段通过两个问题引出文章的主旨,即语言和思维的关系,假如没有语言,人们是否能够思考。故选D。

【范文】
