Plants are more than just pretty to look at. They give us food. Some plants even provide materials for medicine or building things. But do you know that plants can do something even more amazing? They can make our homes, schools and workplaces much healthier.
We spend a large part of our day indoors. Unluckily, the air inside buildings can often be full of chemicals (化学物质) from many things around us. This poor air quality (质量) can make us feel sick, causing sore eyes and throats, and even making it hard for us to breathe. When the air inside buildings gets really bad, people even call them “sick buildings”.
The good news is that plants are like nature’s little superheroes. They have a magic power fighting against bad air. Plants breathe in carbon dioxide (CO₂) and breathe out oxygen (O₂) which we humans need to live. They can also add moisture to the air if it’s too dry, making it more comfortable for us to breathe.
________ Scientists have discovered that plants have the ability to take in harmful chemicals, making the air around us safer to breathe. They set up a completely closed building called “bio-home” for experiments. Before they added plants, the air inside was full of chemicals and people found it hard to breathe. But after they added plants, the air got much cleaner and it became easier to breathe. To make the air inside even better, the scientists used different kinds of plants. After a while, the building wasn’t a “sick building” any more. People could go inside without feeling unwell.
So you see, plants are fantastic! They are not only beautiful to look at, but they also provide us with food, help create materials and play an important role in our health. They make our indoor environments cleaner and healthier, making us feel better. Next time you see a plant, remember all the amazing things it can do for us!

39. Which can be the best to fill in the blank in Paragraph 4?
A. But the most amazing thing plants can do is to clean the air.
B. But one interesting thing plants can do is to build things.
C. But plants can provide what humans need to eat.
D. But plants can be used to make medicine for humans.
40. How does the writer support his opinion about plants improving air quality?
A. By telling personal experiences. B. By providing numbers and forms.
C. By questioning famous scientists. D. By using scientific experiments.
41. What does the writer mainly want to tell us?

When I was a boy my family would sometimes get together at my great aunt’s tiny house over the summer. Relatives from all over the country would come to visit. The adults would get together in the living room, around the kitchen table and on the front porch (门廊) to talk and catch up on each other’s lives. All of the kids would be sent out in the front yard to play.
Those were the days before video games and smartphones appeared, so we often ended up playing a good old-fashioned game of tag (捉人游戏). I remember one of those times especially. I was the youngest and smallest of all the kids there, so I got caught first and couldn’t catch anyone else.
Although I tried my best to chase after my brothers and cousins, they were all too fast for me. I grew sadder and sadder. I finally lunged at (扑向) one of my brothers and fell my face first into the dirt. I got up with tears in my eyes.
Then I saw one of my cousins standing there. She started to run but was going much slower than before. I easily caught up with her. Then she turned to me, smiled and said, “I’m it! You’d better run!” I ran off laughing happily while she turned and started to chase one of my older brothers.
I see now how her act of kindness that day saved me from sadness and brought me joy. It didn’t matter that we hardly ever saw each other. We are family and she loves me. We are all one. We all belong to each other and we are one big, beautiful family.

“Do you know Macao was never my real name? I have been away from you for too long, Mother ...”
Song of the Seven Sons-Macao, written by Wen Yiduo in 1925, is still in the hearts of Macao’s teenagers today. The Basic Law of the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China (《中华人民共和国澳门特别行政区基本法》) came out in 1993 and started to work on Dec. 20, 1999, as Macao returned to China. From then on, it has become much easier for young people to build a closer relationship with their motherland.
Chan U, an 18-year-old, is studying at the University of Macao. She said, “Traveling to the Chinese mainland (大陆) has become easier. Visits to Zhuhai have become a part of the daily life of some people.” Kun Lot U, 25, studies at the South China University of Technology. She said, “Many local people go to Zhuhai to buy vegetables as they are fresher and cheaper than those in local markets. Young people often go to Zhuhai to play jubensha, a role-playing game.”
The number of trips out of Macao in January was 2.23 million, and most of them went to the Chinese mainland. Cities like Chongqing, Changsha and Hangzhou are popular places for young people, according to Chan. Guangdong is also a good choice since the language and food are similar.
“Young people in Macao care a lot about what’s happening on the mainland,” said Kun. Like the young people on the mainland, they also use apps from the mainland to know the hot issues (话题). They have learned many mainland Internet catchphrases (流行语), “I know about the most popular ones, such as ‘yyds’,” said Kun. “They make us understand more about people and life on the mainland.”
More than half of the people in Macao use online shopping apps from the mainland. Kun said that it’s because they can find almost everything they need at good prices on the apps. The products are first shipped to a collection station in Macao. It usually takes about three to seven days for local people to get the products. “The connection between Macao and the motherland is getting stronger and stronger,” said Chan.

Scientists have been studying body language for a long time. They say more than 70 percent of our messages are delivered (传递) through body language. Sometimes, body language is more accurate (精准的) than the words we use.
So it is very important for us to learn body language. ____57____ We will find it easier to get a job. We will also have lasting friendships.

38. Which of the following is one way for plants to improve the air inside buildings?
A. They breathe out carbon dioxide. B. They produce oxygen.
C. They give out harmful chemicals. D. They make the air dry.
A. Plants are important for providing food. B. Plants make people look much better.

When I was a boy, my family would sometimes get together at my great aunt’s tiny house over the summer.

Why Should We Learn Body Language?
In English classes, we spend a large amount of time studying grammar and learning new words. ____53____ Few of us, however, pay enough attention to body language. So body language is not important, is it?
The answer is,“Yes!” As the old saying goes, “Actions speak louder than words.” ____54____ For example, shrug (耸) our shoulders, and without a word, we’ve just said, “I don’t know.”
Body language can help us stress what we are saying. It can help us express our true and inner feelings. Moreover, body language can help us find out if someone is lying. Often, people who are lying do not make eye contact (接触). ____55____ Because they are uncomfortable with the conversation.
In job interviews, the interviewers can sometimes judge the interviewee before he or she speaks. ____56____ It can show if you really care about your friends. Leaning forward (身体前倾) into the conversation, for example, means you are interested in what is being said. Listening without making eye contact means you are not paying attention but are waiting for your turn to speak.
