It was Father’s Day. We were supposed to celebrate the day happily. However, I ruined (毁掉) it.
I stood there listening to my father shout at the top of his voice. The look on his face said that one of us had done something wrong.
“Which one of you did this?”
We all looked down at the step. There was a child’s handwriting in chalk (粉笔) there. I was very frightened. Would he guess it was me? I was so scared. When he asked me I lied, “Not me, Dad.” The others denied (否认) it as well. Of course, we all knew that one of us must have done it. But as the youngest and smallest of the three, I just couldn’t find the courage to tell the truth.
To find out who had written on the step, Dad gave us each a piece of paper and a pencil. “I want each of you to write exactly what you see on the step.” I tried my best to write the words differently. I didn’t want Dad to be able to tell it was me.
He looked at our pieces of paper. “Since none of you will say yes, then I will punish you all.” I stood there and said nothing. The last thing I wanted was for Dad to punish me! “I did it,” my sister walked forward and said she had done something she hadn’t. She was grounded (禁足) for a month.
We didn’t talk about that day for many years. Not until we were all older did I know it was safe to finally tell my dad it was really me. I always felt sorry because of it. That was the last time I let anyone else take the blame (责备) for me.

AI painter Midjourney created a picture of a Chinese girl reading a newspaper. Can you recognize AI-made pictures?
Mark Zuckerberg wears a pink coat and walks the runway (时装秀伸展台). Former US president Donald Trump falls over while getting arrested (逮捕). These pictures have recently gone popular online. They have one thing in common — they are fake, but look like they are real.
AI tools like Midjourney and DALL-E can create such pictures. Simply type in what you want and the picture comes out in minutes. People have never been more worried than today about the spread of fake news.
However, AI tools are not perfect. News media, including the Washington Post and the Paper gave some tips on telling fake pictures.
One way is to look at hands. AI often draws human hands incorrectly. Sometimes the number of fingers is wrong, and sometimes the shape looks strange. The photos AI uses to learn often show hands in different ways, so it isn’t sure what a “hand” really looks like.
We can also focus on the details. For example, people in an AI-made image may miss an earring or a part of their glasses. If there’s a text in an image, such as a poster, the text is usually unreadable.
AI is also terrible at dealing with the background. If there’s a crowd in the image, people’s faces in the corner are usually unclear or they don’t have a face at all!
According to Boom, a website that fights against misinformation, people should slow down on clicking their posting button: “Stop, find the source, find trusted reports, rather than let our first impressions lead us.”
8. We’ve learnt that the picture in Paragraph 1 was ________.
A. copied by a special tool B. designed by AI tools
C. becoming valuable D. drawn by someone online
9. We can tell if a picture is made by AI by ________.
a. looking at the people’s smile b. looking into details.
c. checking the background. d. looking at the main characters’ faces.
A. ab B. ac C. bc D. bd
10. According to Boom, people should ________.
A. think twice before spreading information B. trust their first impressions
C. fight against spreading information D. learn to read and click buttons
11. The best title of the passage might be________.
A. Looking through websites often B. Having the habit of drawing
C. Giving tips on enjoying pictures D. Finding AI’s mistakes
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. A 11. D

Many of us learn how to ride a bicycle at a young age. As we grow older, we may stop riding—most of us go to school by bus or by subway. But whenever we get on a bicycle, it’s like we’ve never stopped biking. This is strange. In many other cases, our memories let us down. We often find it hard to remember the name of a person or a place, don’t we? So why can we still ride a bicycle after we stopped riding a long time ago?
There are many types of memories. Memories of experiences (e.g., our first day at school) and of factual knowledge (e.g., the capital of France) are declarative memories. These memories can be communicated to others. Skills such as playing an instrument or riding a bike are procedural memories. These memories are responsible for our performance.
Scientists have done many experiments on different memory types. Perhaps the most famous of them was carried out on Henry Gustav Molaison, an epileptic (癫痫患者). In an operation in the 1950s, part of his brain was taken away. After that, the man suffered less from epilepsy. But there was a new problem! Molaison’s memory system went wrong. Through tests, scientists found he could learn new skills (slowly, though). However, he could never remember having been trained to learn a new skill. In other words, Molaison could develop new procedural, but not declarative, memories.
Scientists have concluded that even with serious brain injuries, procedural memories last much longer. However, they haven’t yet found out why. Some say procedural memories are more lasting because they are stored in the brain’s center.
Now, “It is just like riding a bicycle” has been used as an idiom (习语) in our daily life.
12. In the first paragraph, the writer leads into the topic by ________.
A. listing numbers B. giving examples
C. describing scenes D. explaining reasons
13. Which of the following is about a procedural memory?
A. The climate of Asia. B. A birthday party with friends.
C. A trip to the USA. D. Swimming.
14. What might be Henry Gustav Molaison’s new problem after the operation in the 1950s?
A. He couldn’t remember anything.
B. He couldn’t learn a new skill.
C. He couldn’t remember factual knowledge.
D. He suffered more from epilepsy.
15. The idiom “It is just like riding a bicycle” probably means “________.”
A. Once learned, it is never forgotten B. It’s never too late to learn
C. You should learn with all your heart D. People can learn from their mistakes
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. C 15. A

14题详解】
细节理解题。根据“Memories of experiences (e.g., our first day at school) and of factual knowledge (e.g., the capital of France) are declarative memories.”以及“However, he could never remember having been trained to learn a new skill. 【15题详解】
词句猜测题。根据“It is just like riding a bicycle”可知,这句话是与第一段的举例骑自行车的事实相呼应,在第一段中提到只要学会了自行车,哪怕是很久不骑,但每当骑上自行车,就好像从未停止过骑车,也就是说“一旦学会,就永远不会忘记”,故选A。

Dear Tom,
I’m glad to hear that you’re coming to China for a study vacation! I’d be happy to help you with your Chinese—we can practice together when you arrive.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of our most important traditional holidays. It falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. Families gather to admire the full moon, eat mooncakes, and share stories. The festival symbolizes reunion and gratitude, as the round moon represents family unity.
I usually celebrate it with my family by having a big dinner, lighting lanterns, and giving mooncakes to friends. It’s a special time to appreciate our loved ones.
Looking forward to your visit!
Yours,

It was Father’s Day. We were supposed to celebrate the day happily. However, I ruined (毁掉) it.
I stood there listening to my father shout at the top of his voice. The look on his face said that one of us had done something wrong.
“Which one of you did this?”
We all looked down at the step. There was a child’s handwriting in chalk (粉笔) there. I was very frightened. Would he guess it was me? I was so scared. When he asked me, I lied, “Not me, Dad.” The others denied (否认) it as well.

A copied by a special tool B. designed by AI tools
C. becoming valuable D. drawn by someone online
9. We can tell if a picture is made by AI by ________.
a. looking at the people’s smile b. looking into details.
c. checking the background. d. looking at the main characters’ faces.
A. ab B. ac C. bc D. bd
10. According to Boom, people should ________.
A. think twice before spreading information B. trust their first impressions
C. fight against spreading information D. learn to read and click buttons
11. The best title of the passage might be________.
A. Looking through websites often B. Having the habit of drawing
C. Giving tips on enjoying pictures D. Finding AI’s mistakes
12. In the first paragraph the writer leads into the topic by ________.
A. listing numbers B. giving examples
C. describing scenes D. explaining reasons
