Gestures are a special kind of language. But be careful! The same gesture can mean different things in different cultures.
We all know the “OK” gesture. But do you know the different meanings of it? In the UK, the US, and many other western countries, it means “everything is fine” or “yes.” People might use it to say they agree with something. However, in Brazil and Germany, this gesture is impolite.
When people cross their fingers, they usually hope for good luck. For example, if you have an exam, you can cross your fingers and wish for a good result. In the UK and the US, it’s a common way to show hope. But in some Asian countries, people may not understand this gesture at all.
Besides, making a “thumbs up” sign, with your thumb pointing upwards, shows that you like something in many western countries. It’s a way to say “good job” or “excellent.” However, in the Middle East and some West African countries, this gesture is very rude (粗鲁的), just like using bad words.
When you travel or meet people from other cultures, it is really important to learn about their gestures. This helps you talk with others better and avoid disagreement (避免分歧). Remember, a small gesture can tell a big story!
23. In the US, the “OK” gesture means _______.
A. You’re not good B. All is well C. It’s rude
24. What’s the structure of this passage?
A. B. C.
25. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. One is never too old to learn.
B. Do as the Romans do.
C. An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
26. What’s the main idea of this passage?
A. All kinds of gestures around the world.
B. The importance of having gestures.
C. The different meaning of gestures in different places.
C
Dirty water can be dangerous to drink and make people get ill. It is harmful to the environment (环境) and it may hurt the animals. Here are some reasons of dirty water.
Sewage also called waste water is a big part of dirty water. In many places, it goes straight into rivers, lakes or seas. Too much sewage will kill fish and other water lives. It makes the water unsafe for animals to drink, wash or swim. So we must let the sewage go into rivers in a right way.
Oil (油) is important, but it may be bad for the environment. If a truck or a ship leaks (泄漏) oil, plants and animals may die. For example, when the birds’ bodies are full of oil, they aren’t able to fly. Their feathers may no longer protect them from the cold weather.
Factories often pour waste water into rivers. This may do harm to plants, animals and humans. Some factories filter the waste water before it goes into rivers. In this way, the waste water won’t pollute (污染) the river and this helps to keep the environment clean.
Smoke and gases from factories and cars in the air may pollute the environment. When it rains, the chemicals in smoke and gases fall down together with the rain. This is called acid rain (酸雨) and it can kill plants and animals.
As we all know, water is an important part of human life. And the water resources (资源) are not enough on the earth. So we should try our best to save water and protect the valuable water resources in our daily lives. At the same time, we can also encourage more people to join us.
27. Why do we need to treat the sewage before it comes into the river?
A. The sewage will kill some animals.
B. The sewage will look dirty.
C. The sewage will make the drinking water taste bad.
28. What does the underlined word “filter” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Throw. B. Remove. C. Make.
29. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. When birds’ bodies are full of oil, they may not be able to keep warm in cold weather.
B. The waste water from factories won’t be harmful to plants, animals or humans.
C. The smoke and gases can kill plants and animals directly (直接地).
30. What is the purpose of the writer to write this passage?
A. To tell us sewage is a big problem.
B. To blame (谴责) some factories for pouring sewage.
C. To call on people to protect and save water.

Do you feel sleepy on rainy days? _____31_____ Many people feel the same way. But do you know why?
_____32_____ Our brain will have less serotonin (血清素) and more melatonin (褪黑素) if there isn’t enough sunlight. Serotonin helps us feel good, while melatonin makes us feel sleepy. As a result, we may want to go to sleep and even feel a little sad when it’s rainy.
The humidity (湿度) of a rainy day also plays a part. _____33_____ It’s more difficult for our sweat (汗水) to dry in weather like this, so our body has to work harder to stay cool. This can make us feel tired.
_____34_____ When raindrops fall, they make a soft and gentle sound called “pink noise”. This kind of sound can help people fall into a deeper and longer sleep.
Now you can understand why you’re sleepy on rainy days. Then what can you do if you don’t like that feeling? Well, you can get much natural light and keep yourself busy. _____35_____ In this way, you won’t feel sleepy any more.
A. Also, you can use a machine to make your room dry.

第三节 阅读下面的短文,回答问题。(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
Each day is different. Among them, I had a really unforgettable day before. It was 8:00 a.m. and the weather was sunny and warm. A group of students got out of my car to make a video in the park. My job, as a driver, was to stay nearby so that if they need something I could open the car.
I could have two or three hours’ free time, so I decided to go somewhere and do some reading. I found a beautiful park. There I noticed that a man was sitting on a bench (长椅), but there was plenty of room for more than two bodies. Walking over, I sat on the end seat to have a rest.
The man on the other end looked at me but didn’t move. I quickly found that he may spend the night on the bench. His clothes were dirty. His hair was untidy. And soon I caught a bad smell of body sweat (汗水). I looked at him and smiled, and he smiled back with a mouth of blacked-out teeth.
We both sat there for over an hour quietly. I was reading. He was watching the video. He then stood up, walked in front of me and bowed (鞠躬). In a little shaky but clear voice, he said, “Thank you.” I looked up at him.
“For what?” I asked in surprise.
He looked at the ground, “Usually people won’t even look at me, let alone (更不用说) sit by me. Thank you for treating me as a man.”
I really didn’t know what to say as he turned and walked quickly around the corner. I was surprised. I didn’t do anything special. I just shared a bench.
To me, he was just someone who wanted a place to rest. That’s exactly what I wanted. We were no different. I finally got to know that my actions truly meant something to this poor homeless man. So, treating others in an equal (平等的) way can also make a difference to the world.
56. How was the weather?
57. Where did the writer go to spend his free time?
58. Why did the writer think the man may spend the night on the bench?
59. Was the writer surprised at what the man said?
60. What do you think of the writer?
