High school, for most teenagers, is a space where new adventures and challenges begin. I clearly remember my first day of high school. As I entered the school gate, I was greeted by a crowd of students. The hallways were filled with talking and laughter. It was a lot to handle, and I felt like a tiny fish in a vast ocean. I held my schedule tightly, trying to find the right classroom. My heart raced as I was scared of getting lost.
My first class was English, and as I walked in, I spotted familiar faces from my previous school. I breathed a sigh of relief as I took my seat, surrounded by friendly smiles. My English teacher, Mrs Johnson, introduced herself and made everyone feel comfortable. She explained what we would be studying during the semester and encouraged us to share our thoughts and ideas. The next class was mathematics, which happened to be my weakest subject. I felt a tight feeling in my stomach as I entered the classroom, but my maths teacher, Mr Smith, turned out to be very patient. He promised us that we would learn and improve together. His words of support made me feel more relaxed, and I began to believe that I could overcome my maths struggles.
During lunchtime, I sat with a group of students who quickly became my friends. We shared stories, and talked about our expectations for high school. It was during this time that I realised that high school wasn’t just about academic subjects; it was also about building friendships and making lasting memories.
The rest of the day flew by with a variety of classes, faces, and experiences. My first day of high school was filled with moments of anxiety, joy, and the promise of new beginnings.

25.Which words can best describe the English teacher?

C.Inspiring and friendly. D.Outgoing and warm-hearted.
26.How did the author feel when entering the maths class?
A.Excited. B.Anxious. C.Relaxed. D.Confident.
27.What did the author realise during lunchtime?
A.High school only focused on studying. B.High school was an extremely challenging place.
C.High school was full of old friends and classmates. D.High school was also about wonderful social experiences.

The student arrived early, sat front and center, and stood out in my classroom in more ways than one. I’d say that he was about 40 years older than his classmates in my undergraduate communications class. He hungrily jumped into class discussions, with his humor and wisdom of experience. And he was always respectful of the other students’ perspectives, as if each of them were a teacher. Jerry Valencia walked in with a smile—and he left with one too.
“These students gave me the confidence that I didn’t need to feel bad about my age,” Valencia says.
One day I spotted Valencia on campus. He said he would have to stop taking classes that semester and reapply for next year. By then, he hoped to have earned enough money and have his student-loan papers in order. He asked seriously whether he could still sit in on my communications class.
Sure, I said. But he wouldn’t get any credit.
No problem, he said.
Soon there he was again, back at his old desk, jumping into our discussions on how to find and tell stories in Los Angeles—a 63-year-old man with as much energy and curiosity as any of the youngsters in class.
A lot of Valencia’s classmates apparently knew he couldn’t afford that semester’s tuition but was still doing the homework. “Here he is, willingly taking a class for the delight of it and benefit of learning,”says Jessica Espinosa, a 25-year-old junior. Afterward, I overheard Valencia wanted to stay in school until he earned a master’s degree, but it had taken him 12 years to finish community college, so he had a long way to go.
There is something splendidly unreasonable about Valencia’s determination to get a four-year degree and then a master’s. At his current pace, he’ll be 90 when he finally hangs all that paper on the wall. But that doesn’t seem especially relevant. He’s found all the youthful energy and academic opportunity stimulating (振奋人心的). Valencia’s grade in my class this semester will not show up on his transcripts (成绩单). But I’m giving him an A—and in the most important ways, it counts.
28.What made Valencia different from his classmates?
A.He was respectful to the teacher. B.He activated the class atmosphere.
C.He was anxious to learn despite his age. D.He often put forward different opinions.
29.According to the author, why did Valencia continue to attend classes?
A.He treasured the chance of learning. B.He wished to show his determination.
C.He needed the credits to further his study. D.He desired to have an A on his transcripts.
30.Which of the following best describes Valencia?
A.Powerful and independent. B.Energetic and generous.
C.Positive and determined. D.Considerate and knowledgeable.
31.What can we learn from the passage?
A.No pains, no gains. B.It is never too old to learn.
C.Strike the iron while it is hot. D.Where there is life, there is hope.

A campus in Ningbo invites students to free their minds
A teaching building with an indoor “forest”, a rooftop park offering views of the entire city, and pathways lined with facilities such as a gym, library, and auditorium (礼堂) ‑ these are features of Huizhen High School’s campus in Ningbo, Zhejiang.
Ma Di, an architect in his early 40s, is the designer of the campus. He said that he got the inspiration from his daughter who was happy to study at home during the pandemic. “The design of her school makes her feel depressed sometimes,” Ma said. “Traditional middle school campus design usually stresses efficiency and designers want to squeeze (塞入) as many teaching facilities as possible in a limited space.”
To him, however, allowing students to feel “purposeless” is as important as teaching them knowledge in the classroom. “In my design, there are no rules, no defined functions, no traditional concept of rooms and floors,” explained Ma.
For example, to allow students to embrace nature, Ma designed a teaching building that has a huge “forest in the air” embedded (嵌入) in the building, with plants protruding (伸出) from all directions. Atop the building is a rooftop park, with tall grass waving gently like falling snow. After dinner, students walk, daydream or watch the sky there. “It’s like the school vanishes (消失) from sight, freeing their imagination,” said Ma.
Besides his philosophy on educational building design, Ma also wants students to have fun in the teaching building and “feel like they can do whatever they want with the space”.
To achieve this, he eliminated traditional floor concepts in the “forest in the air”, with corridors weaving through treetops. This setup allows one to move up and down within the “forest”, with different paths intersecting (相交) unexpectedly, creating small adventures. Additionally, flexible room designs let students tailor (量身打造) spaces to their preferences, transforming some into mini aquariums (水族馆) and radio stations.
Thanks to his innovative approach to architecture, Ma’s design for Huizhen High School won the World Building of the Year 2023 award at the 2023 World Architecture Festival. “To me, the best architecture always invites the inhabitants (居住者) to keep on creating when using the space,” Ma said. “I’m so glad to see students enjoying and being creative here in this design.”
32.What inspired Ma Di’s design for Huizhen High School’s campus?
A.His daughter’s love of forests. B.His own experience as a student.
C.A visit to a traditional middle school. D.His daughter’s home study experience.
33.What is Ma Di’s design philosophy?
A.Prioritizing openness and freedom. B.Striving for architectural complexity.
C.Making the best use of teaching facilities. D.Combining efficiency with functionality.
34.What is the primary function of the rooftop park, according to Ma?
A.A reminder of the need for environmental protection. B.A space for leisure and relaxation.
C.An escape from academic pressures. D.A place for space observation.
35.Which of the following best describes the teaching building?
A.Practical and sustainable. B.Classic and entertaining.
C.Innovative and interactive. D.Multifunctional and spacious.

(第一段)
24.Why did the author feel like a tiny fish in a vast ocean at first?
A.Because of excitement and curiosity.
B.Because of the school’s welcoming atmosphere.
C.Because of fear of the unfamiliar environment.
D.Because of good preparations for the new school.
✓
My first class was English, and as I walked in, I spotted familiar faces from my previous school. I breathed a sigh of relief as I took my seat, surrounded by friendly smiles. My English teacher, Mrs Johnson, introduced herself and made everyone feel comfortable. She explained what we would be studying during the semester and encouraged us to share our thoughts and ideas. (第二段)
25.Which words can best describe the English teacher?
A.Generous and powerful. B.Responsible and patient.
C.Inspiring and friendly. D.Outgoing and warm-hearted.
✓
The next class was mathematics, which happened to be my weakest subject. I felt a tight feeling in my stomach as I entered the classroom, but my maths teacher, Mr Smith, turned out to be very patient. He promised us that we would learn and improve together. His words of support made me feel more relaxed, and I began to believe that I could overcome my maths struggles. (第二段)

A.Excited. B.Anxious. C.Relaxed. D.Confident.

(第一段)
“These students gave me the confidence that I didn’t need to feel bad about my age,” Valencia says.
28.What made Valencia different from his classmates?
A.He was respectful to the teacher.
B.He activated the class atmosphere.
C.He was anxious to learn despite his age.
D.He often put forward different opinions.
✓
One day I spotted Valencia on campus. He said he would have to stop taking classes that semester and reapply for next year. By then, he hoped to have earned enough money and have his student-loan papers in order. He asked seriously whether he could still sit in on my communications class.
Sure, I said. But he wouldn’t get any credit.
No problem, he said.
Soon there he was again, back at his old desk, jumping into our discussions on how to find and tell stories in Los Angeles—a 63-year-old man with as much energy and curiosity as any of the youngsters in class.
29.According to the author, why did Valencia continue to attend classes?
A.He treasured the chance of learning.
B.He wished to show his determination.
C.He needed the credits to further his study.
D.He desired to have an A on his transcripts.
✓
A lot of Valencia’s classmates apparently knew he couldn’t afford that semester’s tuition but was still doing the homework. “Here he is, willingly taking a class for the delight of it and benefit of learning,”says Jessica Espinosa, a 25-year-old junior. Afterward, I overheard Valencia wanted to stay in school until he earned a master’s degree, but it had taken him 12 years to finish community college, so he had a long way to go.
30.Which of the following best describes Valencia?
A.Powerful and independent. B.Energetic and generous.
C.Positive and determined. D.Considerate and knowledgeable.
✓
There is something splendidly unreasonable about Valencia’s determination to get a four-year degree and then a master’s. At his current pace, he’ll be 90 when he finally hangs all that paper on the wall. But that doesn’t seem especially relevant. He’s found all the youthful energy and academic opportunity stimulating(振奋人心的). Valencia’s grade in my class this semester will not show up on his transcripts(成绩单). But I’m giving him an A—and in the most important ways, it counts. (最后一段)
31.What can we learn from the passage?
A.No pains, no gains. B.It is never too old to learn.
C.Strike the iron while it is hot.
D.Where there is life, there is hope.

A teaching building with an indoor “forest”, a rooftop park offering views of the entire city, and pathways lined with facilities such as a gym, library, and auditorium(礼堂)‑these are features of Huizhen High School’s campus in Ningbo, Zhejiang.
Ma Di, an architect in his early 40s, is the designer of the campus. He said that he got the inspiration from his daughter who was happy to study at home during the pandemic. “The design of her school makes her feel depressed sometimes,” Ma said. “Traditional middle school campus design usually stresses efficiency and designers want to squeeze(塞入)as many teaching facilities as possible in a limited space.” (第二段)
32.What inspired Ma Di’s design for Huizhen High School’s campus?
A.His daughter’s love of forests.
B.His own experience as a student.
C.A visit to a traditional middle school.
D.His daughter’s home study experience.
✓
To him, however, allowing students to feel “purposeless” is as important as teaching them knowledge in the classroom. “In my design, there are no rules, no defined functions, no traditional concept of rooms and floors,” explained Ma.
For example, to allow students to embrace nature, Ma designed a teaching building that has a huge “forest in the air” embedded(嵌入)in the building, with plants protruding(伸出) from all directions. Atop the building is a rooftop park, with tall grass waving gently like falling snow. After dinner, students walk, daydream or watch the sky there. “It’s like the school vanishes (消失) from sight, freeing their imagination,” said Ma.(第四段)
33.What is Ma Di’s design philosophy?
A.Prioritizing openness and freedom.
B.Striving for architectural complexity.
C.Making the best use of teaching facilities.
D.Combining efficiency with functionality.
✓
Besides his philosophy on educational building design, Ma also wants students to have fun in the teaching building and “feel like they can do whatever they want with the space”.
To achieve this, he eliminated traditional floor concepts in the “forest in the air”, with corridors weaving through treetops. This setup allows one to move up and down within the “forest”, with different paths intersecting(相交)unexpectedly, creating small adventures. Additionally, flexible room designs let students tailor (量身打造)spaces to their preferences, transforming some into mini aquariums(水族馆)and radio stations.(第六段)
34.What is the primary function of the rooftop park, according to Ma?
A.A reminder of the need for environmental protection.
B.A space for leisure and relaxation.
C.An escape from academic pressures.
D.A place for space observation.
✓
Thanks to his innovative approach to architecture, Ma’s design for Huizhen High School won the World Building of the Year 2023 award at the 2023 World Architecture Festival. “To me, the best architecture always invites the inhabitants(居住者)to keep on creating when using the space,” Ma said. “I’m so glad to see students enjoying and being creative here in this design.”(最后一段)
35.Which of the following best describes the teaching building?
A.Practical and sustainable. B.Classic and entertaining.
C.Innovative and interactive. D.Multifunctional and spacious.

I am more than delighted to receive your letter of congratulations on my admission into high school. It is with the objective of sharing my first day of high school life with you that I’m writing to you.
To begin with, my new high school is so large and beautiful that I can’t express my excitement with words. What’s more, my classmates are outgoing and friendly, who I think are easy to get along and to make friends. They are also hard-working, stimulating me to study harder than before. Apart from what has been mentioned above, my teachers are all nice, especially my Chinese teacher, a handsome young man, who has a good sense of humor. He has made an excellent impression on me in the first class. In conclusion, I had a great day on my first school day.
Wish you have the same wonderful experience as well.
