Passage 1
(24-25学年高二上·福建厦门同安实验中学·期中)
On a sunny afternoon, my friend Ollie and I were enjoying skatcboarding at our local park. Our mood was light until Olle spotted a poster for the upcoming Harvest Fair. The idea of attending it was thrilling, but the ticket price of $50 quickly iced our enthusiasm.
While we were thinking over the cost, our attention was drawn to the list of attractions. Among the various activities, we noticed that our favorite band - Eagles was going to perform. We couldn’t help but break into singing our favorite song by them. What added to our excitement was the pie contest in the poster, a delightful reminder of our shared memory. It used to be the most popular event in our community. But thinking of the expensive tickets, which seemed to be a shadow over our excitement, we all sighed. Then I suggested going to my parents’ store to see if they could help.
Upon arriving, my dad told us he had some good news, showing some tickets to us. They were the very ones we had seen in the poster! My dad explained that his old partner had made a request to hang a poster here for the Harvest Fair, and in return, he offered us free passes. Much to my delight, there were six tickets for five people in our family and an extra one for my friend! The news was like a breath of fresh air, bringing unexpected joy into our day. We could all set out to experience the fair together, no one missing out.
Just then, Mrs. Smith, out awesome 80-year-old neighbor, walked unsteadily towards us.“I just saw the poster in your window. How I used to love going to fairs!” She paused, with her eyes dropping before she continued. “But it’s hard for me to get around now, and tickets cost so much these days...”注意:

【答案】Ollie approached me, seemingly to say something. As Mrs. Smith continued to gaze longingly at the poster, he whispered, “Why don’t we give her the extra ticket?” Touched by his thoughtfulness and generosity, I nodded. When we presented her with the ticket, she was overjoyed and lost for words. My dad winked at Ollie, silently expressing gratitude for his kindness. The fair was great, filled with laughter, music, and the freshly baked pies. But the very best part was seeing Mrs. Smith’s broad smile.
After the fair, I came up with a plan to make up for Ollie ‘s absence. My family decided to throw a surprise “Family Harvest Fair” in his honor. Besides party decoration, we prepared simple but fun games. We also invited neighbors around. Ollie’s face lit up with surprise and gratitude. During the fair, we baked an “award-winning”pie and gifted him with a classic album bearing Eagles’autographs. Even though it wasn’t quite the same as the real fair, the genuine laughter and happiness shared among us were equally fulfilling. It was Ollie’s act of kindness that sparked a ripple of lasting joy for us all.

Passage 2
(24-25学年高二上·福建泉州市安溪一中,养正中学,惠安一中,实验中学·期中)
Shoes are made for walking.
But Aamir, a homeless Indian boy, doubted it. Wandering the noisy railway platform, he found one of his flip-flops (人字拖鞋) broken again. He hurried to a corner, sat down and tried to fix it, his bare foot pressing awkwardly against the ground. However, it was beyond repair.
He gave up and looked around aimlessly, staring at people’s shoes. Suddenly, his eyes were drawn to two boyish legs wearing flawlessly white socks and equally perfect black leather shoes, which were glittering in the mid-day sun. It was a boy of his age. He couldn’t treasure his possession too much, obviously, because every ten seconds, he stopped, bent down and carefully wiped a dust or two from his shoes. His father was constantly glancing over and urging him, “Hurry up! The train is coming!”
Aamir’s eyes followed the father and son, but mostly the leather shoes, as if enchanted (被施魔法的). Imagining himself wearing them, the comfort from the good leather, jaw-dropping look on his friends’ faces, he couldn’t help cracking a big smile.
The bell of the train drew him back; the fancy-shoe boy and his father were about to get aboard. They tried to crowd into the doorway. However, the instant the boy entered the compartment (车厢), one of his shoes fell off and before he could pick it up, the train began to pull away.
The shoe was now lying alone on the platform. Aamir’s eyes lit up with excitement. Like an arrow, he shot for the shoe and then picked it up, holding it with both hands as if holding the Queen’s crown. After a few seconds of hesitating and looking from the shoe to the train and back, he began racing--with only one good shoe, his flip-flop.
He held the leather shoe up, trying to pass it to the boy through the window, who was desperately reaching out his hand as well. However, it was never close enough.
Para 1: That left Aamir no choice but to throw the shoe onto the train.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para 2: But when he raised his head, Aamir saw the other shoe thrown out of the window.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】That left Aamir no choice but to throw the shoe onto the train. With his eyes fixed on the window, Aamir put all his strength in his right hand and made a powerful throw. However, he abruptly fell off because of the broken flip-flop. Without a second thought, he tried again, the shoe just flew past the window frame and fell on the platform like a dead leaf. Seeing this, Aamir stamped his feet, wearing a frustrated look. “Are shoes really made for walking?”, Aamir thought with depression. He drooped his head, not knowing what to do next.
But when he raised his head, Aamir saw the other shoe thrown out of the window. Miraculously, it landed on the platform several steps away from him. Before he could look up again and seek out the fancy-shoe boy, the train sped on, vanishing in the distance. What remained in sight was the meandering rail track and the rolling mountains far away. Twenty years later, when he was launching his new footwear product at a press conference, wearing a pair of shining leather shoes, Aamir started his presentation with a simple sentence: “Shoes are made for walking.”

Passage 3
(24-25学年高二上·福建莆田市第十五中学·期中)
I often saw her on the streets during the evening, but she was always by herself. She appeared weak and I always wanted to help her, but after hearing what my neighbors had said about her, I wasn't sure whether I should.
One day, when I was on my way to the supermarket, our paths crossed. I was walking past her and overheard her singing a tune. It immediately drew my attention because my parents used to sing the same song with me. I began to sing along with her, and she smiled at me for the first time. But when I smiled back, she quickly hurried her pace and went home.
She seemed very different to me that day. I refused to trust my neighbors' claims that she had cut herself off from the rest of society because she was insane, so the next day, I knocked on her door. Mrs Davis was home, and instead of letting me in, she just looked at me silently through the window. I noticed her staring at me and was about to walk to the window when she quickly closed the curtains.
The next day, I revisited her house. “Hello, I brought you something,” I called out to her. “It's the record of the music you were singing yesterday.”

【答案】参考范文:
The door opened and Mrs Davis’ eyes widened in surprise at the sight of me standing there. I held out the record, “I thought you might enjoy this.” Mrs Davis slowly took it from my hands, staring at it. For a moment, she seemed lost in memories. “Thank you,” she whispered. Then I was invited into her house, feeling a sense of connection blossoming between us. “I used to listen to this song with my husband and daughter. It was their favorite,” she shared stories of her love for music, and the pain of her loss. When I left her house, I offered to hug her, and Mrs Davis’ eyes shone with newfound hope.
Several days later in the morning, the doorbell rang at my house. Surprising and delightful, it was Mrs Davis! She stood at our doorstep, holding a tray of freshly baked cookies, her eyes sparkling with warmth, “I wanted to thank you for bringing light to my life.” I replied excitedly, “I’m just more than glad to see you.” Gradually, Mrs Davis no longer cut herself from the world and she became a regular visitor to my house, also finding her way back to the community that cared for her. Sometimes, I realized that all it took was a small act of kindness to break down the barriers of loneliness.

Passage 1
(24-25学年高二上·福建厦门第一中学·期中)
She was the prettiest puppy we had ever seen, and the whole family immediately fell in love with her. We named her Onyx because of her black, shiny black coat. She spent her first vacation with us when she was only ten weeks old and had her first bath and swim in the St. Lawrence River. We had no clue that this amazing little ball of fur would end up being our hero.
As she grew older, Onyx became more and more involved in our family activities. On hot summer days, Onyx enjoyed floating on the river with us in her own rubber tube (橡皮圈). Amazingly standing on the top of the tube, she smiled while showing off her perfect balance. Resting her front legs and paws over the edge of the rubber tube, she kept her eyes shut as she floated until she’d had enough of the warm sun on her black coat.
One day, our eighteen-year-old daughter, Margie, announced she was going to swim across the bay. No one in the family was free to go swimming with her. The unwritten rules, regardless of swimming ability, was to have a companion in the water with you, especially when swimming the width of the bay. I was not a good swimmer, so I said to Margie, “Take Onyx with you.” Having heard her name, Onyx woke up from a nap and was ready for action. Margie signed the dog to follow her. Onyx ran to the water next to her. They entered the freezing river together and swam side by side across the bay.
I watched from the bank as they reached the sandbar (沙洲) on the far shore. They rested a few minutes before diving into the water for the return trip. I felt uneasy for some reason and continued to watch the pair swim side by side.
Suddenly I heard Margie calling out, “I have a cram (痉挛) in the leg! ”

Seeing the pair approaching the riverbank, I breathed a sigh of relief.

【答案】
Suddenly I heard Margie calling out, “I have a cram ( 痉李 ) in the leg! ” Seized with panic, Margie rubbed her leg hard to relax the muscle but in vain. Seeing her struggling in the water, Onyx immediately swam to the side of Margie and then put her head beneath the girl’s right arm. I yelled for help for fear that they might freeze in the chilly river. But much to my joy, with Margie tightly grabbing Onyx’s collar, our little furry friend began digging deep, slicing through the water with her paws and swimming fast towards the bank with every ounce of strength.
Seeing the pair approaching the riverbank, I breathed a sigh of relief. When they finally got to the shore, I reached out to help Margie, pulling her up onto the riverbank and wrapping her in a large towel. Exhausted but excited, Onyx eagerly ran to Margie and gently licked her face to make sure she was Okay, Everyone in the family was grateful for their safe return and Onyx was given an extra treat later in the afternoon for her quick and brave reaction. She became our hero that day and she never ceased to amaze us in the days that followed.

Passage 2
(24-25学年高二上·福建漳州市龙文第一中学·期中)
Mother and I spent mornings cleaning up the dirt that blew into our house.Mother said all the dust was due to the drought, not only here in our village but all over the Great Plains.
The dirt covered everything. When my sister, Amy, and I walked to school, we wore kerchiefs (方头巾) over our mouths so that we didn't breathe in the dirt. When the air quality was so bad that the school was closed, we stayed at home and helped Mother put wet sheets over the windows, but the dirt always found a way in.
Last Sunday, there was no dirt in the air, only bright sunshine and a clear blue sky. After breakfast, Father headed out to the farm to check on the cattle while Mother started doing some washing.Amy and I played in the yard.Surprisingly, the temperature suddenly dropped.
Then Mother shouted from the house, “Christine, you and Amy get inside, quick, now!”
I looked towards the west and saw a huge black cloud. All the birds flew away.“Amy, go with Mother!” I shouted,“I'll warn Father.”
Amy ran towards the house. The storm hit so fast, and I barely saw her climb the steps. In an instant the day turned into night.I stumbled (绊倒) over our bicycles left carelessly in the yard.I screamed, hoping my voice would lead Father back.
The dirt and sand stung (刺痛) my skin like a thousand bees.I needed to get to a shelter.Covering my face with one hand, I moved towards our car which was parked in the yard and opened the door.Dirt flew in with me as I closed the door.Father was still out there! I needed to help him find the car.
I searched the dashboard (仪表板) and found the switch for the front lights.Would Father see them in the darkness? Was he safe? I pushed the horn (喇叭) again and again, hoping Father would hear it.I pushed until I had no more strength in my arms.

Finally, the wind stopped and the dust began to settle. Dirt piled up against the car windows.Father kicked against the door, opening it to let us out.We reached the front door just as Mother and Amy came out of the house.“You and your father are safe!” Mother cried.“I'm safe thanks to Christine,” Father said.“I'm so proud of her.”Tears of joy rolled down my cheeks because our family had survived the horrible storm.

Passage 1
(24-25学年高二上·福建漳州市东山县·期中)
Three years ago, Mark moved out of his mother’s house after landing a well -paying job in another city. He thought living 1500 miles away from his elderly mother, Cassandra, would work out because he planned to visit her monthly.
Mark stuck to his visiting plan during the first year. However, with the amount of work increasing, he couldn’t find time to visit his mother monthly. He started to only speak to her on the phone, telling her about his life. Soon, Mark became busy and made a few phone calls to Cassandra. He didn’t even remember the last time they spoke on the phone.
One day, while working in his office, Mark heard his phone ring.
“Mom’s 70th birthday!” the reminder on his phone read.
“Oh, dear. How can I forget my mom’s birthday again?” Mark shook his head as he turned the reminder alarm off. “I can’t keep disappointing her like this. Let me see how fast I can get to her place.”
After checking his work schedule (日程计划), Mark realized that he could make it to his mother’s house by the evening if he left the office in an hour. He quickly finished the work and left the office without wasting another minute.
On his way, he stopped at a store and bought his mother’s favorite cake. He also bought her flowers and a few gifts. Although he wanted to call her, Mark thought it would be better to surprise her because he was sure that she wasn’t expecting him to visit her. After all, this was the first time that he had done something like this in a long time.
Mark finally arrived at the mother’s house. However, when he knocked at the door, no one answered. Puzzled, he opened the door with his key and entered. Nobody was there. He searched the house worriedly, only to find an envelope covered with dust on the table. Recognizing his mother’s handwriting (笔迹), Mark opened the envelope at once. It turned out that Cassandra had left her house and joined a local retirement community because she felt lonely.

Upon arrival, he got out of his car, holding the flowers in one hand and the birthday cake in the other.
After asking about his mother at the front desk, he was glad to know she was still there. Seeing his mother, Mark ran to hand her the flowers and hug her tightly, saying how regretful he was for not visiting her earlier. Cassandra was both surprised and happy to see her son suddenly. Passage 2
(24-25学年高二上·福建厦门市湖滨中学·期中)
As he lay awake that night, Tony could hear his parents discussing his sister Alice’s birthday. It was just two days away. Birthdays were always a lot of fun, even though there was no money for store-bought gifts. Nearly all of toys he and his sister had were homemade. There was nothing wrong with that, he knew. Like many families in this part, they were poor.
This birthday would be different, though. Alice was older now, and he’d seen how her eyes lit up when she saw the new doll at Honey House, a neighborhood store just down the road from their house.
How he longed for her to have it! An idea finally came to him just before he went to bed. After a quick breakfast the following morning, he tied a bag to the handlebars of his bike and headed toward a village hill.
After a long journey, he reached his destination, the mango forest. There were already two other boys there. Tony grabbed his bag and set to work immediately.
The sun was high overhead. The weather was hot and nearly all of the taller trees held ripe mangoes but they were well beyond reach. Tony struggled to climb the trees to pick mangoes, though he fell off many times.
His efforts were sometimes rewarded when a mango dropped into the bag. After a while his neck ached from looking upward, and his arms grew sore. He kept at it, though, and by late afternoon his bag was nearly full.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Tony rushed back to Honey House, out of breath, only to find the owner of the store was going to close the door. Seeing Tony, he told him to come the next day. But Tony didn’t give up and explained all to the owner. Hearing Tony’s explanation, the owner opened the bag to check the mangoes. To Tony’s disappointment, they were not enough to exchange a lovely doll. He was walking out with tears rolling down his face when the owner stopped him and finally agreed because of his love for his sister. After giving many thanks, Tony got his sister a dream present.
Paragraph 2:
The following morning, Alice walked into the kitchen and took a seat at the breakfast table. She noticed a beautiful box on the table. Curious, she opened the box carefully. Passage 3
(24-25学年高二上·福建宁德市福宁古五校教学联合体·期中)
There were two things that Jack decided he didn’t like on the first morning at his new school: Jessy and reading aloud for all to hear and judge. His initial plan was to act sick and stay at home, but his mom sent him to school. To make things worse, he had to sit next to Jessy.
During the reading time, Mrs. Thomas asked Jack to read. Reading aloud always made Jack nervous. As he picked up the book, his hands shook and the words blurred. “He can’t read, ” Jessy said. “I didn’t call on you, did I? ” asked Mrs. Thomas. “No, but I’ll read.” Jessy insisted. Jack made an annoyed face, and so it ended up with a stop. Jessy whispered to Jack, “When my mom brings my kittens (小猫) to school, don’t even think about touching them.”
The four kittens arrived in a box covered with a wooden board. Everyone except Jack held them. All this happened while Jack practiced spelling and didn’t seem to be interested in the kittens. When he sharpened his pencil, however, he looked into the tiny box secretly. “Don’t touch my kittens! ” Jessy commented. “Dumb kittens, ” Jack said.
After a while, the children took out their arithmetic books. Then Philip said, “Hey, where are the kittens? ” The box was empty. “Oh no! ” Jessy said. “Jack, did you take them? ” Jack shook his head, “They must have pushed up the lid. ” “He said they were dumb,” Jessy told Mrs. Thomas. “I didn’t mean it.” Jack’s face turned red. “Look at the radiator (暖气片) !” Philip said. Tiny gray paws pushed out from under the radiator cover. “Kitty, kitty,” Mrs. Thomas said. The paws disappeared. “If we ignore them, maybe they’ll come out. At least the heat isn’t on. ”
Soon, two paws and a tiny head appeared. Jessy yelled, “Kitten! ” The kitten moved back out of sight quickly. Jessy cried in disappointment. Feeling sorry for her, Jack handed her a tissue.
Then the bell rang, and the class lined up and ran out for break-time exercise (课间操) . When Jack passed the empty box, he saw kitten treats (零食) inside.

【答案】Jack got an idea and he went towards Mrs. Thomas. “Mrs. Thomas, can I stay in the classroom for break-time exercise? I can get the kittens out, ” he offered. Mrs. Thomas nodded. With the treats in his hand, Jack sneaked over to the radiator. He then sprinkled the treats beside him. One kitten cautiously came out. Jack patiently waited until it started eating. Another kitten appeared when it saw its sibling eating. Jack carefully took them in his hands and placed them into the box. He sprinkled more treats. Soon, four more tiny paws emerged. The other two kittens began eating too. Jack softly put the last two kittens in the box and placed a book on top of the board so the kittens couldn’t escape.
When the class returned, Jessy noticed the sound coming from the box. “Jack has prepared a surprise for you. ” Mrs. Thomas said with a smile. Seeing all the kittens in it, Jessy covered her mouth, her eyes wide open. Mrs. Thomas announced to the class, “Jack rescued the kittens. ” Everyone cheered. “Thank you, ” Jessy whispered to Jack. “You’re the best. ” Jack was so happy and proud of himself that he was no longer lacked self-confidence as he did before. When he read in the next class, his hands didn’t shake and the words didn’t blur. That day, he decided that the new school might not be so terrible after all.

Passage 4
(24-25学年高二上·福建龙岩市一级校联盟·期中)
It was on the warmth of a summer day. After finishing the spring semester at high school, my cousins and I had two months to rest and go somewhere. A beach trip in the summer was always a sparking idea for us who lived far away from the beach. Hence, my cousins and I made a plan to go to Fort Walton Beach in Florida because we heard Florida has the most amazing beaches. The trip was such an unforgettable vacation for me with mixed emotions. Sometimes, when I recall, everything seems to have just happened yesterday.
We were very excited about this trip because this was the first chance for us to go out of Texas. We prepared and packed up everything about three weeks before the day of departure. We drove straight to Florida and arrived at Walton Beach in the evening.
The instant we got out of the car, I went to check in two rooms. My cousins went straight to the beach to find a place to go fishing. I stayed behind and got my things settled in since I don’t like fishing. After unpacking, I called a taxi to take me to them. Night fell down completely by the time I got there. The cool wind covered my body when I walked on a bridge where my cousins were fishing. They didn’t notice me because they were so concentrated on fishing. I ended up leaving them behind because I started to get bored and went down to the beach. Suddenly, far from the beach, I heard someone yelling, “Help, help me!” I looked around shocked and tried to determine where the sound was coming from about a half mile away from me. I saw something rising out of the surface. It looked like a person and she was about to sink into the water, fighting to stay up.
For a second, I really did not know what I should do instead of just standing there with surprise. Thoughts inside my mind were going crazy because I wanted to save her, but my consciousness did not allow me to do that because I was not skilled at swimming.

【答案】However, only with seconds of hesitation, I looked around and saw a life jacket. I put on the life jacket and jumped into the water without delay. The sea was rough, and the waves kept crashing over me, making it hard to swim towards the girl. I could feel my strength draining away, but I pushed on, determined to save her. When I finally reached her, I grasped her hand firmly. It took all my effort to pull her up and keep her head above the water. I did all I could to bring her to the shore.
Exhausted, we laid our bodies on the sand. The girl looked at me with gratitude in her eyes and said, “Thank you so much for saving my life. I can’t imagine what I would have ended up without your help.” I smiled and replied, “It’s okay. I’m just glad I could help.” Then, I heard the sound of waves rushing to the shore and the water was running up on the sand, filling in the gaps of my toes. It was not until I experienced this event that I realized I should learn to swim well, not only to keep myself safe but also to help others. (183 words)

Passage 5
(24-25学年高二上·福建漳州市乙级校联盟·期中)
When I was in seventh grade, my parents paid a tutor(家庭教师) forty dollars a week for her coming to my house and helping me with math. It ended up raising my marks from fifty to fifty-five.
I had to admit it was mainly my fault. Maybe I should have concentrated my math from the beginning. But studying math was a tough thing. Sitting on a chair to work on confusing math problems for two hours was a slow and painful process. During the process, I would fidget(坐立不安) and have many trips to the refrigerator in an attempt to get off that chair for at least five minutes.
During math tests, my teachers would always stay by my desk. My teachers and friends would frequently ask the question after tests,” How’s your math this time?" So I became extremely afraid of math. While normal people of my age were scared of some insects and adventurous travels, I feared anything to do with numbers. The thought of a teacher picking on me in class made me feel scared. The red marks on the test paper were also terrifying.
My fear of math got worse in ninth grade. Every report card I received from my new math teacher Ms Robbins had the comment to encourage me, "I'm glad to do what I can to help you.” But I couldn't tell her the real reason why I didn't ask for help-I didn’t want to be considered stupid. Every question I had was, in my opinion at the time, something that the whole class had understood but I. So instead, I ended up not caring about anything related to math, without working hard on math at all. And I concluded everything would work out in the end
Eventually, my classmates and I took the final test that would lead to our graduation from middle school and stepping into high school. Days after the exam-- on a rainy summer morning, Ms. Robbins called me.
Paragraph 1:
With worry and uncertainty, I entered her office.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
After I took the courage to tell my parents the bad news, they were silent.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1
With worry and uncertainty, I entered her office. After asking me to sit down, she told me that I failed the math test. And she suggested that I should spend another year in middle school if I wanted to be admitted to a relatively good high school. I burst into tears when I heard the news. Seeing that, Ms. Robbins came to comfort and encourage me, and said she'd like to offer any help if necessary. After leaving her office, I was anxious, wondering how to tell the bad news to my parents
Paragraph 2
After I took the courage to tell my parents the bad news, they were silent. My body shook, waiting for their blame. However, they encouraged me to have another try in ninth grade. It was then that I determined to take math seriously. The following day, I turned to Ms Robbins for help and told her about my determination. Ms. Robbins was happy that I finally decided to work hard on math. Thanks to her patient guidance, I made great progress and was not afraid of math any more. Finally, I made my way to a good high school and a university. Now I’m a doctor and I' m proud of myself.

Passage 6
(24-25学年高二上·福建厦泉五校校联考·期中)
A few years ago, my wife Sue had some fairly serious health problems. She had suffered surgery after surgery and had also put on weight for several years. Diets had not helped her.
One day we sat down and drew up a “wish list” of the things we wanted most out of life. One of Sue’s items was to run in a marathon. Given her history and physical limitations, I thought her goal was completely unrealistic, but Sue became committed to it.
She began by running very slowly around. Every day she ran just a little farther than she had the day before just one driveway more. “When will I ever be able to run a mile?” Sue asked one day. Soon she was running three. Then five. “We can change ourselves for the better and cause ourselves to pursue our most precious desires with almost total success,” Sue said and registered to run in the St. George Marathon in southern Utah.
I drove the mountainous road from Cedar City to St. George. When the marathon began, I parked the car near the finish line and waited for Sue to come in. Five hours later, it was raining steadily and the wind was cold. Several cold and injured runners had been transported past me, and I began to panic. The image of Sue, alone and cold, off the road somewhere, made me sick with worry. The fast and strong competitors had finished long ago, and runners were becoming fewer and fewer. Now I could not see anyone in either direction.
Almost all of the cars along the marathon route had left, and some normal traffic was beginning. I was able to drive directly up the race route. There were still no runners in view after driving almost two miles. Then I went around a bend in the road and spotted two runners running up ahead.

【答案】作答示例
It was Sue in the company of a girl runner, struggling. As I approached them, I noticed the pair dragging their feet and running forward awkwardly with their shoes wet. I pulled off and called. “Are you okay?” “Oh, yes!” Sue said, almost out of breath. The girl also nodded and kept moving. I had wanted to offer them a ride in, but the resolve in their eyes made me swallow back the words. I turned around and followed. Inch by inch, they were getting closer to the finish line. Eventually, the real winners in my heart ran past the finish line.
At the finish line, the girl hugged Sue, “You made me believe we could do it.” She added, “Sue described so vividly how it would be to finish that I knew I could do it.” Sue smiled back. “I’ve been dreaming about this day for two years and I shall not be denied”. Greatly moved, the girl promised she would never quit anything easily without total success. At that moment, I looked at Sue and found she was carrying herself differently. It was not as if she had become someone new; it was more as if she had discovered a real self she had not known before. She truly liked her newly discovered self. So did I.

Passage 1
(24-25学年高二上·福建名校协作考试·期中)
My middle child, Jake, was smart and good-looking, but he always sees the cup of life as half empty. Every day when he came home from school, Jake would list everything bad that happened that day!
On his ninth birthday, we saved enough money to take the family to Disneyland for two days. His dad and I didn’t make much then, so it cost a considerable amount, but we felt Jake’s birthday was worth it. After doing Disneyland to death (玩够了), we returned to our hotel room, all exhausted. And I asked the birthday boy, “Did you have fun today, Jake?”
All my fault-finding son could say to me was “Pirates (海盗) of the Caribbean was closed!” “Jake Marshall,” I was clearly unable to contain my anger, “we stood in line for an hour and a half to see The Haunted Mansion. We rode Space Mountain three times. We spent two days playing in the park, and all you can say is, Pirates of the Caribbean was closed?” Clearly, something had to be done about his negative attitude and I was going to be the one to do it!
I was determined to help him. I read every article and bought every book. With the help of great resources, I found my son had the tendency to see the worst in every situation. My research told me that people with negativity have an emotional need for order and sensitivity. That meant I needed to listen to my son’s daily pessimistic reports. My usual reaction was to try to talk Jake out of his negativity, but that wouldn’t satisfy his need for sensitivity, so I had to let him finish his complaints and ask what good things happened. Then I needed to wait until he could tell me. This would help Jake realize that good things really were happening to him.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One day Jake came home from school and complained as usual. He listed the terrible things at school. I listened carefully, looking at him and nodding now and then. After his complaint, I asked what good things happened to him. “Nothing.” His response was what I could expect. “Something good must have happened. Think it over, my boy.” I encouraged with a gentle smile. After about fifteen minutes’ effort, he admitted being praised by his head teacher for helping cleaning the front desk. Through this practice, he realized something good really happened to him.
From then on, Jake came to understand the power of seeing good points. He would not just consider everything awful, but was willing to discover something awesome. And to my great joy, he kept patient and peaceful during his sharing. He even danced in excitement at wonderful things. I witnessed his attitude changing from negativity to positivity. The path to getting there seemed to be a struggle, but he was making headway. My hard work was paying off and I believed Jake would get used to seeing the cup of life as half full.

Passage 2
(24-25学年高二上·福建龙岩市非一级达标校·期中)
Sara, a kind-hearted woman, always taught her son, Tim, the importance of compassion (同情) and understanding. Tim, a curious and thoughtful teenager, was always eager to learn from his mother. One day, they walked into a cozy restaurant where they learned something important.
The restaurant was filled with the smell of delicious food and the soft chatter of other diners. Sara and Tim found a quiet corner table by the wall. They settled down, excitedly discussing that day’s events and looking forward to the meal they had ordered.
During their conversation, an elderly man, dressed in worn-out clothes, entered the restaurant. His hesitant steps and the way his eyes scanned the menu with a hint of longing caught Sara’s attention. He approached the counter and asked about the cheapest meal available softly. The waiter, with a polite smile, informed him of the prices, and the elderly man, with a sigh, decided to order just a bowl of rice.
The elderly man took a seat at the table next to Sara and Tim. His back slightly stooped (弓背), as if carrying the weight of his struggles. As waiting for the food, the elderly man received a phone call from his daughter. He was using one of those old people’s mobile phones which sent out so loud noise that everyone around him could hear the conversation. The daughter’s voice, filled with concern, echoed (回荡) through the phone, and the man’s face lit up with a father’s love. He reassured her that he was doing well. When asked about his meal, he told his daughter he was having beef. It was a lie that was meant to spare her from worrying.
Sara and Tim overheard the conversation. Tim, with his innocent curiosity, asked why the elderly man was telling the lie. Sara’s eyes welled up with tears, not of sadness, but of a deep understanding of the man’s difficult situation. She explained to Tim that sometimes, people tell kind-hearted lies to protect their loved ones from worry or sadness.

Sara explained to the waiter that she did that to preserve the old man’s dignity. The waiter agreed to help with a smile and appreciated Sara’s idea. Then the waiter went into the kitchen to tell the chef to cook a plate of beef.
When the beef arrived, the elderly man’s eyes widened in surprise. He looked around, trying to find the source of this unexpected kindness. Sara and Tim just smiled at him from their table, and their hearts were filled with the joy of giving. The old man asked the waiter what had happened. The waiter bent down and whispered to the old man, “You are the lucky winner of today’s promotion. You can enjoy the meal for free.” The old man was surprised and thanked the waiter. Passage 3
(24-25学年高二上·福建福州第二中学·期中)

Passage 4
(24-25学年高二上·福建泉州市泉州科技中学·期中)
I was the best speller in my third-grade class. Everyone knew it. I could spell lots of difficult words effortlessly. Perfect scores came to me after each weekly spelling test.
Our teacher Mrs. Brown’s rule for spelling tests was that if you didn’t get at least 60 percent correct, you had to copy each word for next week’s spelling test fifty times. Ryan, the kid who sat next to me, was not very clever. He did badly in every subject, including spelling.
One day when Mrs. Brown passed back our spelling test’s papers, I took a quick look at Ryan’s paper and saw his big red mark-56 percent. He quickly folded (折叠) the paper and pushed it into his desk. Before the next spelling test, I was so confident about my spelling abilities that I thought that I didn’t need to prepare for it.
The day finally came. As Mrs. Brown slowly mouthed each word and then repeated it, the silence was broken only by crazy pencil scratches (沙沙声). Then Mrs. Brown said, “Handkerchief.”
As I rapidly put pencil to paper, I stopped. My mind was racing as I wrote down h-a-n-d-k-e-r-c-h. What was the remaining part? Did the word end up with “i-e-f”, “e-i-f” or just “i-f”? My mind was blank. I wrote “e i-f” down, but I was wondering whether I should erase (擦除) them and change them to other letters. Then it hit me that Ryan knew how to spell it. He wrote the word fifty times-there was no way he would forget it.
Ryan had put his pencil down. It was a wide-open road between my eyes and the word that I knew he had correctly written on his paper. I was very nervous as Mrs. Brown was about to mouth the next word.

【答案】One possible version:
I turned my eyes to Ryan’s paper without anyone noticing me. There it was, spelled out in Ryan’s poor handwriting. My eyes went quickly back to my own paper, and I changed the letters “e-i-f to the letters “i-e-f”. I remained nervous as Mrs. Brown mouthed the last spelling words. My stomach was painful, and my mind was racing. I had just cheated for the first time in my life. Was this the way I kept my perfect record? By being a cheater?
Finally, I decided not to cheat. I picked up my eraser just as Mrs. Brown asked us to hand our papers to her. Quickly, I erased what I had written down earlier and changed it to what I knew was the wrong word. As my sweaty hand released my pencil, I breathed a sigh of relief. I held my head high as I handed my less-than-perfect paper to Mrs. Brown. What if my mark would be not as good as before? At least my honesty was.

Passage 5
(24-25学年高二上·福建南平市·期中)
Tess was eight years old when she heard her mother and father talking about her little brother, Andrew. All she knew was that he was very sick and they were completely out of money.
Only a very costly surgery could save him and it was looking like there was no one to loan them the money. She heard her father say to her tearful mother with whispered desperation, “Only a miracle(奇迹) can save him now.”
Tess went to her bedroom and pulled a glass jar from its hiding place. She poured all the change out on the floor and counted it carefully. Placing the coins back in the jar and twisting on the cap, she slipped out the back door and made her way to Rexall’s Drug Store.
She waited patiently for the pharmacist(药剂师) to give her some attention but he was too busy at that moment. Finally she took a quarter from her jar and banged it on the glass counter. It worked. “And what do you want?” the pharmacist said, “I’m talking to my brother from Chicago whom I haven’t seen in ages.” Tess replied, “My little brother, Andrew, has something bad growing inside his head and my father says only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost?” “We don’t sell miracles here, little girl. I’m sorry but I can’t help you,” the pharmacist said.
The pharmacist’s brother was a well-dressed man. He came up and asked her, “What kind of miracle does your brother need?” “I don’t know,” Tess replied with her eyes welling up. “I just know he is really sick and my mother says he needs an operation. But she can’t pay for it, so I want to use my money.” The man from Chicago asked, “How much do you have?” “One dollar and eleven cents,” Tess answered.

【答案】 The man touched Tess’s head and smiled. He told Tess that the money was the exact price of a miracle for her little brother. He took her money in one hand and he grasped her hand with the other hand. He asked her to take him to where she lived. He wanted to see her brother and meet her parents. He told Tess he had the kind of miracle she needed.
In fact, the man was a famous doctor. He promised to help the poor girl. The operation was completed without charge and it wasn’t long before Andrew went home again. Tess’s Mom and Dad were happily talking about the chain of events that had led them to this place. “That surgery was a real miracle. I wonder how much it would have cost,” her Mom whispered. Tess smiled and she knew exactly how much the miracle cost—one dolar and eleven cents plus the faith of a little child.

Passage 6
(24-25学年高二上·福建泉州市泉港区培文学校·期中)
Boys like to be considered to be brave, but what kind of things can be considered to be brave? It is not a question that can be answered by words, but by the actual deed. A boy with the name Henry gave us a good example. Ronny and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day as Ronny and Henry were going home after school, they saw some people fighting in the street corner. Ronny said excitedly, “Some people are fighting! Let’s go and have a look!” But Henry refused, “It’s none of our business. We’d better go home and don’t get close to them. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward, and afraid to go,” said Ronny, and off he ran to the spot with some other boys. Henry had to go home alone and didn't think about it anymore.
But Ronny thought Henry was a coward and told all the boys that. They laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him.
Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Ronny for his rude behavior, because he had learned that true courage was shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ laughter and continued to stick to his thought and go to school and study as well. However, Ronny didn’t invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had his new friends who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had lots of fun.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
At that moment, Henry happened to pass by.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Possible Version
A few days later, something terrible happened to Ronny. That afternoon after school, Ronny was bathing with some of his new friends in the river happily. Suddenly, he was stuck in the mud and couldn’t get out. He struggled hard but he was still trapped. He screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could. They were so scared and did not even try to help him.
At that moment, Henry happened to pass by. He heard the screams and ran to the river as soon as possible. Seeing Ronny was almost drowned, Henry took off his clothes immediately and jumped into the water without any hesitation. He reached Ronny just as he was sinking the last time. With great effort, and with much danger to himself, he brought Ronny to the shore in time. Henry was happy to help his friend, though he was extremely tired.

Passage 7
(24-25学年高二上·福建泉州市四校联考·期中)
One windy day in March, Kitty Miller was on her way to school when she glanced into a store window and saw a great pile of lovely red apples. “Oh,” She exclaimed (惊呼). “How lovely! If only Mamma could have one!” Immediately, the store owner recognized the familiar girl and asked her to pick one. Kitty just shook her head and ran away shyly.
Kitty’s mother was extremely poor. She had been a dressmaker ever since Kitty’s father died, and had to work hard to earn a living for herself and Kitty. Unfortunately, she had recently become very sick and had to lie in bed all day long. When Kitty was away at school, the house was incredibly cold and cheerless. She missed her little angel — that is what she called Kitty. Kitty took great care of her mother. She cooked her food, mostly soup. They could not afford fresh fruit. Kitty would even sing to her mother at night.
When Kitty reached the school that day, her thoughts were full of her sick mother and the lovely red apples. She was usually an excellent student, but that day she made so many mistakes that the teacher looked at her in surprise. The little girl could only sit at her desk, with her book before her, and dream of those red apples.
When school was dismissed, Kitty started slowly homeward. She had walked only a short distance when she saw a man in front of her drop his wallet. Running quickly forward, she picked it up. The wallet felt quite heavy in Kitty’s little hand.
“There must be a good deal of money in it,” thought Kitty. “How I wish I could keep it, so that I would then be able to purchase a red apple for Mamma, and so many other things she needs.”

【答案】 Kitty knew this would not be right, so she hurried after the man. Touching him on the arm, she said, “Please, Sir. You dropped your wallet.” “Thank you, dear,” said the gentleman, taking the wallet. Then, noticing how poorly dressed she was, he said, “Why didn’t you keep the wallet, my child?” “Because that would be stealing,” replied Kitty. “But,” she continued honestly, “before I thought I must give it back to you, I did wish I could keep it, for then I could buy Mamma a red apple.” Hearing this, the man handed her a dollar and said,” You are a good girl. Take the dollar so that you can buy your mother a red apple.” Then, the man said goodbye to Kitty and left. With the dollar, Kitty happily ran to the store.
The store owner saw the familiar girl rushing in, one dollar in hand. He quickly picked out the biggest, roundest, and reddest apple and gave it to Kitty. Taking the apple, kitty was very happy and handed the dollar to the owner. But the owner didn’t take it, saying, “You keep it and the apple is free.” Kitty was so pleased and thanked the kind store owner. Then, she went back home. Her mother was surprised to see the apple and the dollar. Kitty told her mother the whole story. Her mother kissed her and said, “You see, dear, it always pays to be honest and truthful.”

Passage 3
(24-25学年高二上·福建福州第二中学·期中)
