一、阅读理解
Many kids help their parents to do chores such as washing the dishes, cleaning the floors and taking out the rubbish in the house. And some kids get money or other rewards from their parents, such as playing computer games for 20 minutes.
But some people do not think that kids should get rewards for doing chores. One of them is Susie Walton, a parenting educator. She believes that if kids get rewards, they will think that work isn’t worth (值得) doing unless they can get something. For example, kids won’t sweep the floor if they see it is dirty. But they will clean the floor if their parents reward them for it. Susie said, “A home is a living place for everyone in the family. It’s important for kids to see that it’s all the family members’ job to keep their homes clean.”
Other people have different opinions (观点). They believe that money or other rewards can encourage (鼓励) kids to do more chores. It also teaches them a real world lesson that we need to work to make money. Now, there are also apps that encourage kids to do chores. The apps give kids points and gifts that can be used either online or in the real world. With the ChoreMonster app, kids get points after doing chores. Kids can exchange (交换) their points for real rewards, such as time to play video games or a trip to the mall.
What do you think? Should kids be rewarded for doing chores? Or should kids help out with their homes without getting anything?

If you are looking for good ways to learn English well, you will be disappointed because I don’t really think there are any.
Like a lot of Chinese students, I started learning English as soon as I entered middle school. I was interested in learning this foreign language because I was good at it and this made me feel very happy. However, my interest in English learning didn’t last long. Once I got into high school, English made me confused because I couldn’t stand the boring grammar points. Soon, I lost interest in English and my English became very poor.
But English music gave me the confidence to learn this second language. One day I bought an English magazine. There was a tape in it. It recorded several English songs and collected some fun articles (文章). The moment I listened to the songs recorded on the tape, I fell in love with English music. Also, I could read some interesting articles in the magazine to get to know the fantastic cultures of English-speaking countries.
Soon I decided to pick up my English. In order to learn it well, I did many grammar and reading exercises. At the same time I kept my habit of listening to English music and reading English magazines. My grades in English tests improved little by little.

“Please calm down and sit,” said Mr. Johnson. “I’m glad everyone’s here for the final reading test of the year.” When everyone cried, Mr. Johnson laughed, saying it was just a joke. Then he reminded us that we still had a job to do. “You need to clean out your desks and put all your things into your backpacks,” he added gently.
As we began our task, Mr. Johnson turned on the CD player. The lively music made the room feel like a party. Some of us started singing along with the music, others were dancing around their desks while they were cleaning them out. Even Mr. Johnson showed us a few dance steps, making everyone laugh heartily. After we finished cleaning, someone asked, “When is break time?” Mr. Johnson took out some balls and started playing with them. Suddenly, he let the balls drop and said, “Break time starts... now!”
Just as we were about to rush out, our headmaster, Mrs. Miller, appeared at the door. “Mr. Johnson!” she cried out. A moment of silence fell over the room as we thought, “Mr. Johnson might be in trouble.” However, to our surprise, Mrs. Miller couldn’t help but laugh at the sight and left us to enjoy our break.
During break time, Mr. Johnson surprised us with another treat. He went to the café and came back with ice creams for everyone. We all cheered for him!

Students often learn their lessons in class. They sit in the classroom listening to their teachers. This is a way of learning. Is this the only way for students to learn? Of course not. There is another way to learn. Students can teach themselves. For example, if you cannot remember anything when you are doing your homework, what will you do? You can read your book to find the answer.
How to teach yourself? The first thing is to read. Read something you are interested in. The second is that you must ask yourself questions. A clever student is usually good at asking questions. The third is to answer the questions yourself by working hard, by reading books, and sometimes by asking other people. These are the ways of teaching yourself. They are useful and helpful. If you have a pet, you know how much fun it can be: watching little fish swim in a tank, or seeing a dog catch a ball in its mouth. Kids who like outdoor activities can tell you how exciting it is to see their favorite birds. Animals can be of great fun, but it’s important to know how to avoid (避免) danger when you’re with them.
•In the countryside
The rule in the countryside is simple: don’t touch or go near an animal. Although some of these animals may look cool or even cute, leave them alone.
Don’t ever try to feed a wild animal. It’s OK to feed birds, but you shouldn’t feed other animals even if they look very hungry. When it comes to these animals, it’s better to check them out at the zoo, on the Internet, on TV nature shows, or in books.
•Playing safely with pets
Pets can’t tell you if they’re upset or scared, so they show you. They might do this by biting or scratching (抓). To avoid bites and scratches, you should do as follows:
Never touch a pet when it’s eating or sleeping.
Never try to get near a pet with its babies. Animal mothers are very protective and will bite to keep you away.
When pulling a lizard (蜥蜴) or a snake from the tank, do it slowly and carefully. Then wash your hands right away because such animals can carry bacteria (细菌) on their skin.

School Sports: More than Just Fun
Sports are a big part of school life. Most students have regular P.E. classes, and there are usually many after-school clubs to join. But why are sports so important? Well, not only do they keep you fit, they also have many other benefits.
First of all, sports help you build your character. When you play a team sport, for example, you learn how to work well with others. This skill is very important when you get a job later in life. You also learn how to deal with winning and losing. Losing a match can be really difficult, but it also teaches you important lessons. Sports also teach people to keep working hard, which helps them face other challenges in life. David Beckham once said, “Challenges will come, but facing them with hard work is key. I was told I was too small and weak, but I worked hard and played for England 115 times.”
Also, when you play sports, you can meet people and form new friendships. In team sports, you spend a lot of time together in groups. This helps you build strong relationships. You learn to trust each other so that your friendship often lasts after the game. Teammates often become friends for life.
Finally, school sports give you a chance to find your talent. You may also find out that you’re really good at something and you never knew about it. So you should try something new sometimes. Many famous sports stars’ careers started this way. For example, when the Jamaican runner Usain Bolt was young, he loved playing football. However, his PE teacher noticed his amazing speed and encouraged him to try running instead. The rest is history.
So, when you’re out playing sports, remember that you’re having experiences that can help you succeed in many parts of your life. And who knows? Maybe you’ll find a talent that can make you the next sporting superstar.

Part 1: Read and Explore
Reading and writing doesn’t come naturally to people. Although it takes some effort, eighty-six percent of the world’s population have learned how to read and write, and the number has been increasing for centuries. Literacy (读写能力) makes it possible for us to navigate the world filled with books, websites, text messages, road signs, and more. But the world of information is changing. Why send a long letter or text when you can share photos or videos instead? Why learn from a book when you can learn from a video? Why read magazines when you can listen to podcasts (播客)?
Could people join today’s world without the abilities of reading or writing? Technology makes it possible. Most of our devices (设备) now talk to us and take spoken orders. Smart cars ask for where you go and then give directions. Smart virtual assistants, like Siri, listen for requests to report the weather, play a song, set a timer and much more. Some apps can also read text aloud or turn speech into text. These devices aren’t perfect—the apps still make silly mistakes. But they’re getting better and better. So in the future, it’s possible that all of our communication with our devices and each other is spoken.
But reading and writing are powerful tools. For one, most people read faster than they speak. A podcaster speaks at around 150 to 160 words each minute, while a strong reader can look through a text at 300 to 400 words each minute. That’s twice as fast! Research has also found that when people read, they can remember more information and stay more interested than when they listen. Learning to read also creates new connections in the brain. With the invention of reading, our brain has been changed, which developed the ways we were able to think, which changed the intellectual evolution (智力进化) of humans. Would we really choose to give up that progress?
What do you think? Do you hope people keep on reading and writing, or will technology make literacy useless?Part 2: Skills Challenge
Task 1: Understand the Story (基础理解)
76.Why is literacy important according to the passage?
A.It helps people create more videos and podcasts.
B.It allows people to get around in a world full of written information.
C.It makes people better at using smart devices.
D.It is easier to learn than using technology.
77.What THREE things can technology do to help people without literacy?
a .
b .
c .
Task 2: Talk About Feelings (情感表达)
78.Complete the sentences with proper words:
The writer might feel about the possibility of giving up reading and writing. (worried/satisfied)
People may feel when using smart assistants to solve problems without reading. (convenient/confused)
Readers might feel when they remember more information from reading than listening. (proud/disappointed)
Task 3: Be a Problem Solver (问题解决)
79.Imagine your friend says, “Why learn to read and write? Technology can do it all.” How would you use the information from the story to persuade them to keep learning?
Use at least one point from the story (e.g., reading is faster than listening, reading helps remember more, reading changes the brain).
Task 4: Critical Thinking (批判性思维)
80.Do you think technology will make literacy useless in the future? Why or why not?
Support your answer with examples from the story.
【答案】76.B 77. Smart devices can talk to people and take spoken orders Smart cars can ask for destinations and give directions Some apps can read text aloud or turn speech into text 78. worried convenient proud 79.I would say: “Technology is helpful, but reading and writing are still important. For example, reading is much faster than listening—strong readers can go through 300-400 words per minute, while podcasts only have 150-160 words per minute. Reading also helps you remember more information than listening, and it even creates new connections in your brain to develop your thinking. These are things technology can’t replace, so we should keep learning to read and write.” 80.No, I don’t think technology will make literacy useless. First, reading is faster than listening—people can read 300-400 words per minute, which is twice as fast as listening to podcasts (150-160 words per minute). This efficiency helps people get information quickly in a world full of information. Second, research shows reading helps people remember more information and stay more interested than listening. Third, learning to read creates new connections in the brain, changing how humans think and promoting intellectual evolution. These unique benefits of literacy can’t be replaced by technology, so it will remain important.
【导语】本文是一篇议论文,主要探讨了在技术日益发展的背景下,读写能力是否仍然必要,以及科技是否可能取代传统的阅读和写作方式。
76.细节理解题。根据第一段中“Literacy (读写能力) makes it possible for us to navigate the world filled with books, websites, text messages, road signs, and more.”可知,读写能力让我们有可能在这个充斥着书籍、网站、短信、路标等等的世界里导航。故选B。
77.根据第二段中“Most of our devices (设备) now talk to us and take spoken orders. Smart cars ask for where you go and then give directions.…Some apps can also read text aloud or turn speech into text.”可知,智能设备可以与人交谈,并接受口头命令;智能汽车可以询问目的地并给出方向;一些应用程序可以大声朗读文本或将语音转换为文本。故填Smart devices can talk to people and take spoken orders;Smart cars can ask for destinations and give directions; Some apps can read text aloud or turn speech into text。
78.根据第三段内容,尤其最后一句“ Would we really choose to give up that progress?”
I would say: “Technology is helpful, but reading and writing are still important. For example, reading is much faster than listening—strong readers can go through 300-400 words per minute, while podcasts only have 150-160 words per minute. Reading also helps you remember more information than listening, and it even creates new connections in your brain to develop your thinking. These are things technology can’t replace, so we should keep learning to read and write.”
80.开放性试题,答案不唯一,言之有理即可。参考答案为No, I don’t think technology will make literacy useless. First, reading is faster than listening—people can read 300-400 words per minute, which is twice as fast as listening to podcasts (150-160 words per minute). This efficiency helps people get information quickly in a world full of information. Second, research shows reading helps people remember more information and stay more interested than listening.
1.How does the writer start the passage?
A.By giving some facts. B.By giving some opinions.
C.By using a teacher’s words. D.By showing his own experiences.

A.How to make money by doing chores.
B.The apps that encourage kids to do chores.
C.How to exchange the points for real rewards.
D.The good side of rewarding kids for doing chores.
3.What is the purpose (目的) of writing the text?
A.To call on readers to do more chores. B.To tell readers of two different opinions.
C.To invite readers to express their opinions. D.To show the writer’s views about doing chores.

It has hair on its body, but it doesn’t have any feathers like other birds. So it can’t fly. Don’t you think it’s very special?
A kiwi likes to have a lot of trees around it. It sleeps in the tree holes (树洞) all day because the sunlight is bad for its eyes. It always comes out for food at night. People may never see them again so they can’t kill kiwis any more. New Zealanders want their kiwis to live.
